The 2007 Daytona 500
Feb 18, 2007 | 1:54AM | report this

Daytona 500

Finally! We are here. 5 suspended Crew Chiefs, 175 total points reduced, and a winning duel car starting from the back. The 2007 Nextel Cup Season is already in top RPM's, and the green flag is going to drop.

I can't remember another Daytona 500 that had this many story lines going into it. When it comes to qualifying for the 500; rules will be bent, strategy will be played, and the Big One is always going to happen. We set the stage, then we drive over it.

Put all that into your rearview mirror. When the Daytona 500 goes green, none fo that matters anymore. It's all about staying in one piece, who you can make friends with in the draft, bump drafting, and avoiding that wreck. And for the Daytona 500 of the 2007 Nextel Cup Season, it's all about #20 Tony Stewart.

The prize purse is 18 million, with last place paying $226,000. Gentleman, Start Your Engines!

No wonder your TV ratings are slipping. Between all the yakking and commercials, FOX has only shown 1/2 the laps live. Commercialism is ruining NASCAR. I am sick of watching beer and car ads. Let me see some laps, please. The longest stretch of uninterrupted live laps is SIX. Pathetic.

I think that Mark Martin got ripped off. Nascar should have called a caution when they all started wrecking. I think he should have won. He won it in the hearts of alot of people though.

Nascar rips victory from Mark Martin by not posting
the yellow. Rules are to applied the same for everyone. Harvick slides in as other cars slow for whaat should have been a caution.

BECAUSE NASCAR IS A JOKE  I would certainly like to know why nascar didnt throw the yellow, Mark Martin would have won that race .  And what happened to not racing back to the line if the caution flag flew Now dont get me wrong racing back to the flag was cool in the day but i understand safty.BUT NO EXCEPTIONS SHOULD BE MADE............................. I FIND Nascar to be turning into a kids game everyone here remebers when somebody didnt like the someone was winning they would change the rules my point...........................nas

car is like a F$%King kids game now (rule changes every week AND NOW THE NASCAR CAR OF TOMMOROW ) They need to go back to the boxes with engines and make it fun again.

The was ridiculous!!!! Mark Martin is the winner of the Daytona 500. It is soooo amazing how nascar decides when to change the rules...and if they wanted the ability to race back the line, then they should never had made the rule in the first place. They chose to do it for safety so stick to it. Stop changing the rules to alter the outcome of the race.

Funny how every other yellow flag is called as soon as the first car recks...not to mention how they talked it up before the last 3 laps that if a reck occurs the yellow flag will wave and the race is over...

HA...how they changed that to their liking. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

I would like to know what was up with the race coverage? I wasn't sure if I was watching a race or watching commercials with some racing in between! Can someone please tell me how Hamlin went from 3rd to 32nd during the commercials? I know Fox surely didn't bother to explain. Nascar needs to step up and limit the commercials shown during the race. At the very least, don't show any during the last quarter of the race. Maybe the race should just be broadcasted on the radio.

Can't wait to get your take on the outcome Sidd. Quite an exciting race. I have to admit I was hoping for a Martin victory. Looking forward to your analysis.

NASCAR was WRONG not to throw the caution flag for several reasons 1)it was their rule 2)there is no option as to when you can throw a caution-the moment there is an accident caution goes out for the ENTIRE track not just the back of the pack 3)EVERY driver was endangered by NASCAR's irresponsibility 4)it may have made for exciting racing but it once again proved that NASCAR hierarchy are totalitarian Boss Hogg's and NASCAR is simply a #### road rally. The good ol' boys who are the heart and soul of NASCAR fans will of course forgive NASCAR for not adhering (once again) to their own rules, hell, they always do.Who doesn't like seeing a car come across the finish line upside down and on fire, I know I do.But when we start waiting to throw caution flags until it is convenient we are setting a dangerous precedant and I don't believe guys going 180 mph will think its "just racin' ". Nobody died this time NASCAR but next time maybe they will.

Wasn't totally impressed by what I saw overall. Other than thee final few laps of the race. There wasn't much excitement to it all ! Perhaps the only thing that got the fans going was the possibility of seeing Mark Martin win the race for the very first time. But alas it wasn't to be as Harvick prevailed and won NASCAR's most prestigeous race albeit by the smallest of margins.

So many comments. I thank you all for taking the time. I have been so busy with the Daytona 500. It is always such a giant event. I have had no time, so pardon the random reply.

I don't really understand all the stuff about the pregame show. I can't remember anything less then 2 hours. Almost every race comes with that price tag, and a little one like the Daytona 500 comes with some big bills.

I thought that it was a great race. Very Exciting! You can't write a better battle at Daytona.

The story line of Mark Martin winning the 500 would have brought the best in NASCAR fans out into the headlines. By the way it looks already, he didn't need to win. He has already won so much from everyone of us.

You have all done a great job with the NASCAR posts! It makes it hard to write when everyone covers it so well. Keep up the good work!

Yes as usual NASCAR changes the rules as they see fit. What happened to yellow as soon as an accident happens? No, it didn't endanger Martin or Harvick, but what about the other drivers in the race? Do they keep running foot to the floor because NASCAR decides all of a suddden to not follow their own rules? Wreckless endangerment, all of those drivers should be thoroughly discusted with how they were put at risk by NASCAR.

Hopefully the next race won't be filled with so much controversy and we can just get down to racing and nothing else. NASCAR certainly doesn't need ant bad publicity at this moment in time. It's had enough over the past couple of days to make it feel like the unwanted step child.
If anything now it should be dealing with how best to inform its drivers, crew chiefs and team owner. What it deems as being acceptable in terms of what's allowable with regard to the technology that's ultimaltely allowable. Rather than making up the rules as it goes along !

Teboski - I hear what your saying. NASCAR should have thrown the caution, but it had nothing to do with wanting Martin to win. NASCAR will always try to end a race under green. I agree though, it was dangerous.

Justanotherfan - I am not sure if NASCAR would agree that bad publicity, and controversy should come to an end. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, I think all the suspensions and fines they handed out before the race was a bit calculated. What better way to grab attention for NASCAR's biggest event.

The ratings prove it. They didn't get the best ratings, but by far it was not a disappointment. The highest for FOX. If they would have gotten more cautions earlier they would have had more chance for some advertising bucks.

It's an interesting take, at least.

Siddhartha .... At the end of the day that's not what drives the fans.
As it's the excitement more than anything else. The sport itself can't afford anymore missteps as it's already beginning to drive away even some more of its most ardent of fans. The ever increasing ticket prices, concession and souvenir prices is now making it extremely difficult to take a family to such an event. It may well be great watching live on tv but if you're there at the venue then there's nothing like it all to beat !

I had fully intended to make a bet with you on this race, of course...I would have taken the odds on Harvick. Even though we skipped the minor detail of actually making the bet, would it be rude of me to ask for the money anyway?

On second thought, that is rude. You just pay me the $3000 when you can. No rush.

Who said gambling was risky?

How's it going, Sid? Are you happy about the start of the new season?

Justanotherfan - I hear what your saying with the high prices and such. I just don't think that NASCAR is going to shy away from controversy. It makes headlines, it draws attention, and it sells advertising. It's what makes the cars go round.

Ticket prices are a whole different subject.

ShooterB - Damn funny! I have to admit I am a bit shy on that payment at the moment. Let's go double or nothing in California. I will take #31 Jeff Burton, you pick a driver. Winner take all.

I am loving how the season started. I have been wanting to blog about it, but the NASCAR section is just flying right now.

I'm hoping to get a chance to draw something out this weekend. I hope you give it a read!

Stay Fast, Guy!

Well Siddhartha as if the weeks leading up to the Daytona 500 wasn't controversial enough, the 500 ends in a controversy: Did Harvick win or Did Martin win? I feel that Martin was robbed of this win, but NASCAR allowed the two to race back to the start/finish line.

It was truly exciting for the fans, but it went against one of NASCAR's own rules: Not racing back to the caution flag. Granted NASCAR never threw the caution flag, until after Harvick crossed the finish line, which was wrong.

NASCAR since putting into place this rule has thrown the caution flag on minor wrecks than this one. But this was the 500 and they wanted an exciting finish. So NASCAR stole Martin's 500 win. But I am happy for Harvick that he won.

Because if Smoke can't win I will pull for Harvick to win.

Tsfanpc - Wow, what a 500! I thought it was one of the best I have seen. A ton of action.

Your a Harvick fan? It's tough not to give him props for his mad skills. He has that edge to him that makes him tough to beat.

I am not sure about the call. It just makes you wonder. Ratings gives market value. And NASCAR has that angle down. I don't think NASCAR could have made as many headlines alone. They needed all of these issues. I think they are the only ones not complaining. HA!

Glad to see ya. You know Smoke will probably take Cali this weekend, just out of spite.
