Sunday Shots - Cause for Concern in Philly, Chicago
Sep 30, 2007 | 10:52PM | report this

Post-game reaction from two head coaches who are now under fire:

Philadelphia Eagles 3, New York Giants 16

Notable game stats for Philly:  15 penalties, 12 sacks allowed, 3 measly friggin’ points, 1 ugly loss

Here’s what Andy Reid had to say about his team’s performance:

“Well, we went in at halftime to analyze what was working for us…which took less than a minute.  The other 14 minutes we spent talking about those ugly throwback uniforms we had to wear last week, while several players helped Donovan clean the chunks of grass out of his facemask.”

After the game, Reid gave the prestigious game ball to tackle Winston Justice…who allowed more than just a few sacks on McNabb.

“Winston did everything we asked him to.  Unfortunately, the coaching staff forgot to ask him to do anything at all.  We’re thinking of possibly giving him a different assignment for the next game.”

Coach Reid also didn’t seem very concerned about the plethora of penalties his team committed.

“We ended up with 190 total yards of offense, and only 132 penalty yards.  I’m no Alfred Einstein, but I believe that still leaves us with positive yardage.  Sure, 15 penalties sounds like a lot, but…hey, are there any of those Krispy Kremes left in the media lounge?”

So where do they go from here?  That’s anyone’s guess, but a determined coach already had his sights set on next week’s opponent – the juggernaut that is BYE WEEK.

“I feel strongly that we can improve for a win next week against BYE.  They haven’t beaten us since I’ve been coaching, and I think that historic advantage should give us the edge again this year.”

Chicago Bears 27, Detroit Lions 37

Notable Chicago game stats:  14 penalties, 3 interceptions, a multitude of pissed-off fans

Head Coach Lovie Smith took all the blame for yet another dismal performance from his beloved Bears.

“Rex Gross…I mean Kyle Or…no, I mean Brian Griese is our quarterback.  I really mean that.  Before the game, there was just a slight miscommunication on my part.  I told Brian to go in there and just do what Rex does.  Unfortunately, he misunderstood and threw 3 interceptions.”

Coach Smith was annoyed about the implications of a lingering quarterback controversy.

“Like I said before, I think…Brian Griese is our quarterback.  By the way, does anyone know Kordell Stewart’s phone number?”

One ugly week

** Disclaimer:  I think the above statements were purely fictional, but hell...after watching these two humorous games, I'm not even sure anymore.  However, if you did take them seriously...send me an email, and I'll have someone come to your house and drop an anvil on your cranium to put you out of your misery.

I admit I was quite surprised at the Eagles/Giants game. My girlfriend is a huge Giants fan, and I thought they were in for a tough week. And last week, I benched McNabb in the fantasy league that steelerfan has going. It's my initial foray into this fantasy thing. Well, regarding football, that is. But I listened to the "experts" who supposedly knew their fantasies. Come to find out my knowledge of football exceeded theirs, fantasy or no. Luckily I had Matt Hasselback instead last week, and he played all right, too. I was going to switch back to McNabb this week, but luckily I never got around to it. And I must say, I think I may have been wrong about Eli. I felt he was a bust for sure, but he's looking pretty good this year. Westbrook being out certainly hurt the Eagles, but I don't know how much difference he would have made today.

The Bears are in a bad situation. They haven't addressed their QB position in a few years now, and I think we all saw that perhaps they stuck with Grossman for as long as they did because they may not have a better option. And they miss Thomas Jones big time.

I told smoke, or whatever he goes by now, that the Raiders would trade them Andrew Walter. No response.

Leave it to the Bears to pull the Silver & Black from the record books. Three times a team had scored 31 in the 4th quarter, two were by Oakland. Wipe it off - 34 for Detroit.

So does anyone in Philadelphia realize the Eagles lost? I thought they were all drunk in delirium over the Phils?

How 'bout them first place Raiders anyway?

Hey C'mon Shooter...Philly is averaging almost 30 points in the last two weeks. Whadayawant?

At least Philly and Chicago have their baseball teams to cheer about!!!

Ricko, I also thought the Eagles would be tough on the Giants. In the words of the legendary Dennis Green - "WE LET 'EM OFF THE HOOK!"

Westbrook would not have made the difference last night. With all their key injuries, the biggest was the loss of William Thomas on the O-line. I've never seen McNabb pressured like that. Never ever.

Eli is very hard to get a read on. Every once in a while, he'll look a Pro Bowler. But other times, he looks very mediocre. A lot of that may have to do with the team around him, too. His numbers weren't very good last night, but they did pick up the win...and he did just enough.

Norcal, I didn't realize the Bears helped out the Raiders in the Hall of Shame record books. I suppose it's fitting considering how ugly that Chicago game was.

Easy does it on those first place Raiders. I'll give them credit for battling. Culpepper looked healthy, but his highlight reel overshadowed an otherwise average performance. Guess he got the job done when he needed to though. And the running game was insanely effective.

FP, I wish they hadn't wasted all those points against Detroit. They would have been useful yesterday.

Detroit is 3-1, and the Eagles are 1-3. It's a world gone mad...

Boy did the wheels ever come off Philly's and Chicago's trains.

I hate to say it but I saw both of these derailments coming.

And what in hell did McNab do to tick off his O-Line. Talk about being left out to dry ...

Hey, MeanD. I saw the same for Chicago, but didn't expect it to be this bad. They downgraded their running game, and failed to upgrade their passing game. Fatal mistakes for a team that already relied too much on defense and special teams.

As for Philly, I expected them to struggle early...but much like the Bears, I didn't expect it to be this bad. I expected a 2-2 record heading into the bye week, worst case scenario.

I've seen teams apply a pass rush like that for a quarter or two, but I've never seen it be consistently effective over the course of an entire game. The O-line was inexcusably awful, but so was the coaching staff's failure to make adjustments. It reminded me of the scene in The Longest Yard when Sandler's O-line refuses to block in order to prove a point. I don't know, maybe D-Mac got busted knockin' boots with the players' wives.

Watching that Eagles' loss was akin to seein a beauty pageant contestant fumble her line when being asked what ambitions she's got. They could do nothing right and their offensive line was about as effective as a condom with a hole in it. I wonder what Donovan will be complaining about after this horrendous loss ? Two new posts up if you're interested in reading them ? Entitled What Happened In Little Rock Reverberrated Around The World ....Fifty Years On ! And then there's Paper Tigers, Champions Or Simply Not Just Good Enough ?
Let me know what you think as to the merits of both pieces ? I'll look forward to reading your comments.

You put it far better than I ever could have, my brother. Perhaps McNabb needs to take a page out of Walter Payton's book by buying his O-line Rolex's ... something ... anything.

12 sacks?!!!

That's the kind of stat one would expect from the 1st string beating up on the practice squad.

This is the NFL?

12 Sacks?!

Jesus, I never thought that was possible except on Madden (where my buddy and I destroyed Aaron Brooks and subsequently ended his career with 18).

Sucks to Be An Eagles Fan.

As for the Bears, do you think that the Fans will start calling for Kyle Orton? Or will they try to bring back Chris Leak? Hey, he's got big game experience.

Or perhaps he could buy them Isotoner gloves, like Dan Marino used to do with his O-line. I like the Rolex idea better.

"This is the NFL?"

That's the second loss for Philly that resulted in such a question. Last night, I think John Madden said something like "you don't even see this kind of football in high school".

The first time was against Green Bay, when the inexperienced punt returners abandoned the most basic of fundamentals to place the game on a silver platter for the Packers. Perhaps this coaching staff isn't taking care of business the way they should be.

Morisato, 12 sacks would even be a good game for Bobby Boucher. I've never seen anything like that.

I'm sure the Kyle Orton chants can't be too far behind. Or maybe a plea to bring back Jim McMahon.

*SIGH*...

Good freakin' lord.

How come I remember that our current left guard used to be the backup left tackle (and actually played pretty well when called upon to do so, as a matter of fact), but apparently the head coach can't? Can somebody PLEASE explain this to me? At some point, don't you have to get the kid the hell out of there before he gets the QB killed?

Oh well. At least we'll get some guys healthy next weekend while BYE beats us by 10.

Don't make no nevermind to me anyway, Shoots - cuz I got that Phillies fever - and no amount of cowbell is gonna cure it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Eagles' O Line may well be porous but they aren't meant to soak up as much as beating like that and still not being able to protect McNabb. A used tampon would've served McNabb better than those O linemen on the Eagles' offensive side of the ball.

Rational Fan...I was a bit shocked to see that no adjustment had been made at halftime. I think it was MORE than clear that Justice wasn't capable of blocking Osi. I heard Reid in the conference defending Justice, saying that he only accounted for 4 of the 12. Are you kidding me? Forget the sacks, how many times did ole' Winston actually block someone well?

I think that's the reason I've never seen such a thing for an entire game. Most coaches would at least try to make a change at some point.

So yes...HEAVY SIGH.

Whaddya say we offer to take over the franchise? I'm a little short on cash right now though, perhaps someone could loan us a few hundred million.

Tophat...I think that's an accurate description. I've seen better protection from a glow-in-the-dark condom out of a truck stop bathroom vending machine.

ShooterB - would that glow in the dark condom out of a truck stop vending maching be safe enough to use with Paris...or...Lindsay? Just curious.

And the Eagles or Bears could have it worse. Brad Childress could be their coach. You know, the coach who sits his most explosive offense weapon (Adrian Peterson) on the last drives of games because...instead of thinking about getting him the ball...he is concerned about his blocking technique or understanding his assignment. On one play yesterday three Packers blasted by that All-Pro offensive line the Vikings have and Peterson just grazed one of them (which was more resistance than the O-line gave them) which had the commentator telling us that is what Childress means about Peterson's blocking deficiencies. Talk about messed up!!!

ShooterB

Gcoach, not even if you were double-bagging.

That does have to be a frustrating loss for Minnesota fans, I'll give you that. I still think all the tools are there to win, but they aren't being managed very well. Peterson is their best weapon to win now, and in the future. Sitting him in the 2nd half was inexcusable.

But if you want to talk about blocking deficiencies...let's get back to Philly.

Is it possible for a QB to pass out of a pocket the size of a test tube?

McNabb was put on his back 12 times in about 3 hours. You know it's bad when Paris Hilton gives you a standing ovation and says, "not even I can take that kind of pounding".

Justice couldn't handle Osi's speed, and couldn't handle his power on the bull-rush either. He was knocked straight back to the ground on more than one occasion. I can't recall the last time I've seen a tackle over-powered like that.

I checked the Giants/Philly stats this morning. Apparently Ricko had two sacks! Everybody jumped on McNabb. It was like date night in cell block C, er, so I hear.

Detroit is 3-1? Isn't that supposed to be 3-13?
The Bear's injuries caught up and passed the offense. Poor dudes are snake bit this year. There's no covering up for the weak offense now.

Shooter, I forgot to say earlier that I noticed Donovan didn't exactly hustle to recover one of his fumbles. Could this be the beginning of the end for him, and do you suppose his respect level in the locker room is suffering?

It's scary watching the Eagles deteriorate as a team. I can't understand what it is the coaching and management is doing with regard to the team. What have they been recruiting ?
For the life of me I can't see how they're meant to improve as a team if they're not playing with resourcefulness.

Who'dve thought that these three particular teams would show up playing some really bad football. It's as they say the true measure of consistency is to win often and regularly without showing compassion to your opponent.
Something that we're not seeing from these teams in particular.

Shooter,

I hear you on the bad weekend in sports.

On Saturday, Oregon loses a heartbreaker to Cal when one of their guys fumbles at the 1 and the ball goes through the end zone. Touchback. Game over.

On Sunday, the SF Giants finish one of their ugliest seasons in years, and the Chargers implode at home to the underwhelming Chiefs.

Things have got to get better, right?

There's a tendency as they say that things have got to get a whole lot worse before they get better. Hopefully that won't be the case for these teams in particular.

Hey, I am going to cut and paste the following that makes me feel good:

I JUST FOUND OUT that my fellow student, Austin Smith, is still playing for the Boise State Broncos. Broncos, right? Anyway, I taught him in 2000-2001 at San Beranrdino Pacific. He was one of my best Spanish students and a nice guy.

I saw him help beat Oklahoma last year, and I thought maybe he already graduated.

But he is still there making me (and countless others, I'm sure) proud and gratified.

I no longer teach public school, but I would like to think that I made a small difference, even significant to him and his classmates.

Kind of like blogging! Blog on!

Shootah, Wow, the Aggie wen kick A onna Lobos eh braddah! I think we may be seeing a changing of the guard in the WAC this year. I sure hope so, given what a sleazebag Fox is. The Lobos completely dominated UH (which is probably worse than any time in the last 25 years). They really messed Nash up by not giving him the keys when Riley's retirement was announced two years ago. The search for the new coach was a complete fiasco..."Gee maybe if we offer that nice Mr. Alford $400,000 he'll come and coach our team..." "Why are you laughing Mr. Alford?" Hey I enjoyed your Pirate piece. I think that the 49ers in their glory years were the model for success in smaller markets. Get an owner with a ton of money and a bigger ego. Pay market value or above, and spend like crazy on travel, facilities, parties, escort services, pharmaceuticals, etc. etc. Eddie DeBartolo was Mr. Bontempsroullez, John York is Mr. Piker. The Pirate ownership seems to be content to make a hundred thousand each year and mail it in. You need to make good players want to come to your club. At any rate best of luck on a promising basketball season.

Pre-game Mike HartCentral Florida has the NCAA's rushing leader, Kevin Smith. Smith has rushed for 2,448 yards this season, and he needs 181 yards to be officially recognized as the NCAA's single season record holder. Barry Sanders currently owns the record, with 2,628 yards in 1988 when he was at Oklahoma State. That was back when the NCAA did not count bowl games as part of the total stats for a season. So Sanders accumulated that yardage in just 11 games. If you added Sanders' yardage from the Holiday Bowl that year (222), he would have 2,850 yards in 12 games. Would it be right to call Smith the record-holder since he will have played in 14 games? I don't think so.
