You gotta be kidding me. It actually ends in a tie?? What kind of total and absolute socialist #### is that?? What a bunch of tee-ball bulls***. "Everybody wins, isn't that great!? I mean, nobody loses, so nobody has to be sad and get their feelings hurt. I love soccer, it's a nice game."
I realize it may be a some kind of total point system that determines the final tournament winner, but that doesn't make it any less of a wussy way to do it. That "total point system" is also one of the many reasons I could care less about NASCAR, too -- a guy who gets second place in every race can be the season winner? What a joke. But at least every race actually has a winner.
I can't believe that the world championship tournament, the biggest stage for the alleged greatest and inarguably most popular sport in the world -- actually lets its games end in ties. What a bunch of sister-kissin' nonsense.
I actually even tried to watch a bit of it! "Hey, cool, USA and Italy are tied, 1-1. The game's almost over, I want to see who wins..... What???? That's it?? They're just going to end it in a 1-1 tie??"
There is no winner, but there is a loser -- soccer.
The World Cup is a 'combination type tournament', the first 3 games are point based, 3 for a win and 1 for a draw. Best 2 teams from each group advance. After that its win or go home !
It prevents a truly great team from going home immediately on just one bad day.
Hey Roger, good blog and I agree with every point you made about soccer. I just want to tell you to be careful what you say about soccer. You may get alot of comments from unknown people telling you that you are stupid, arrogant and ignorant because you are American and you just don't understand a beautiful sport like soccer.
On another subject...I LOVE AUSTIN. What a great city. I have spent alot of time with DELL in Round Rock and get to Austin as often as possible for the music and nightlife.
Wow the excitment is the points my friend the points in the table. If you loose the other team gets the full three if you tie then you guys get a split. But considering that we only played with 9 players and the ref was being a little baby about every call, then that is some good soccer right there. And yea I can careless about nascar to.
WOW YOU MY FRIEND ARE AN ####. Did you watch any of that game? 3 ppl sent off! 2 americans for the most inexscuable calls! And as a matter of fact if usa wins against gahna and italy beats the czechs then they are in. Watch the game b4 u make any judgements! You my friend are an ####
I watched the game as well and I must say, the referee messed up a great game for the USA.
Yes, its a draw, but what a fight and I must say the USA played better and deserved the win today, if it wasnt for that damn south american referee, who was in 2002 suspended by fifa for making iregular calls.
The last game USA plays Ghana and USA has to win and hope for Italy to beat the Czechs, then the USA will advance in second place in their group.
Not sure why you "cant understand" a draw in group stages. Its darn simple, 3 games played top 2 teams in each group advance to knockout stage.
This world cup has been very exciting. Tons of drama, action, beautiful goals and great atmosphare.
This is the biggest sporting event in the world and if you like it or not soccer is already progressing in the USA.
It will continue to do better in America within the next few years. Yes its not like baseball, basketball or football, but I do believe that the biggest sport in the world will succeed here in the USA.
In my office in Chicago, almost everyone, soccer fan or not is excited about the world cup to a certain degree. That alone is a huge improvement in the interest of the american public in the world cup and especially about our team the USA to do well.
Flying Pig: Too late, it's already happened. I don't mind, it's fun to poke them with a stick. If I did mind, I wouldn't write stuff like this. You should check out my blog "Please Stop Trying to Make Me Like Soccer". Cool that you like Austin, too -- look me up the next time you're here! I'll probably be playing somewhere. You can find my gig schedule at www.rogerwallace.com. I know, shamless plug, but hey, it's my job... You should also check out a Round Rock Express game (at the Dell Diamond) if you're here in the summer. Clemens just pitched a rehab game for them, and the traffic in Round Rock was supposed to be insane. Thanks for the comments.
eclinch: I am an NFL fan, and I realize that REGULAR SEASON games are allowed to end in ties, if the score is still tied AFTER THE OVERTIME. And how often does that happen? Virtually never. Soccer games apparently end in ties all the time. And I still hate that NFL games are allowed to end in ties, I just think that's #### in any sport. Don't start with the name-calling until you've got an answer to your question next time.
ashland: After having to read your comment three times because you can't punctuate, I finally understood the gist. But if they just manned-up and played until you got a winner evey time, you wouldn't have to have some silly "points table".
justinmufc: You, my friend, are an illiterate knee-jerk reactionary. First: No, I didn't watch the whole game, because I'm not really interested in soccer. I watched the last minute or so, and planned to watch the overtime (or soccer-off or whatever), because the USA was in a tie game. I don't need to watch the whole game to know that ending in a tie is stupid and wussy, no matter what sport it is.
Second: There is no such word as "ppl" or "b4". It's "USA", "Gahna", "Italy", "Americans", and "Czechs". And I wouldn't care about your illiteracy if you weren't such a punk. What are you, 12? Have you ever written anything besides emails and blackberry IM's in your whole life? And by the way, I'm not your friend.

Great blog. It looks like soccer is one of the few sports in the world where the tie is allowed. It's sickening. Someone said that it's a "combination type tournament" and the first 3 games are point based. Then, also the basketball World Championship is a "combination type tournament" and the first games are point based. Despite this, if there is a tie, the game goes into overtime. So, why can't soccer do the same?
I can't help thinking that your a bit of a div how can a drawn game be wussy it adds to the drama of the whole thing points make a difference people can still go thru even the US can.. makes for tense exciting games.. and its stupid to compare Nascar to Football/soccer motor sport by nature is set up to have a winner.. football league you have set up win lose or draw goals for goals against it all help towards the end of the season for a final victor...
Another American complain is low scores well if American football only has big scorse because you have more than one point for scoring no achievement really and as its a spin off from English rugby it takes longer not as flowing and takes way longer than it should to complete a game and plus it has guys in padding now compare that to rugby thats wussy...
3pts for the victory in the regulation
0 pts for the loss in the regulation
2 pts for the victory on penalty kicks
1 point for the loss on penalty kicks
It would work IMO and this would make your little tournament called "World Cup" more appealing.
It is very clear that you do not have any undersding of the game of football (soccer). Big deal you tried to watch. This is a typical ignorant response from someone who does not want to admit that football is gaining popularity in the US. Why it is a true team sport, all ages and walks of life can play, it is the peoples sport. Sorry my freind it is you who is on the losing side for failing to embrace the beuatiful game, with or without the game grows..so stick to your not so wussy sport, like American football, oh isnt that an that imitation of rugby, and if they are so tough why ply with so much protection??
Give it up baby. America would be packing if it weren't for that questionable mistake on Italy's side. Enjoy your mediocre status while you have any of the large spotlight. Although they played a good game, they are still amatuers in a sport that has been played world wide for 75 years. world class teams take time to develop, and America will simply have to go through the growing pains of all the other countries that compete in this tournament have had to go through.
Well to be honest the little sport We call the World cup which is bigger than any of your mostly nicked idea sports.. The format for Football\soccer does'nt need to be change its been that way longer than you had sports in the US win\lose\draw format adds complications in totals over a season that can win or lose a championship all has to be consider.. football and rugby had to ben invented in the uk first before US Football could have come to been
I'm not so sure that the World Cup is bigger than basketball, football, baseball and hockey all together. Just think that basketball is the 2nd most popular sport in the world (it has 400 million of fans only in China), it's the 2nd sport in Europe (1st sport in some European countries), Africa, South America, and one of the most popular sport in the US. Add to this also hockey, football and baseball and then let's see who's more bigger. O yea, just so you know, the NBA Finals can be viewed in 210 countries and can reach 1.5 billion wievers. So, now let'see if soccer is bigger than those 4 sports.

First of all, get your facts correct before you decide to write the first stupid thought that runs through your head. If you had any clue about soccer, you would realize that the World Cup goes to a knockout round after the group stage. Also, if nobody loses, how does anyone ever win in soccer?
I suppose you prefer a more American “sport” such as baseball. At least it is comforting to know that after being bored out of your mind for about 3 hours, there is a winner in baseball.
Way to be ignorant, but I must agree with you on one thing. There is a loser – you.
Peace, soccer is not a popular sport here in the states or ever be. Soccer is generally played by suburbanite kids from about 6 to about 13 and thats about it. If soccer grew in popularity why is it that no one here watches MLS, I'll tell you why because soccer is boring.Another thing if it was growing why is NASCAR, MLB, NFL, and NBA the most popular sports in America. There really is no strategy other than hoping your teammate is near to pass to if not it goes the other way, and Americans don't like ties or low scoring games. At least the NHL made changes to bring in the fans what has soccer done nothing.
You need to learn more about the tournament before you spew out those dumb analysis. This is the first round where ties are allowed. After that, every game will have a winner. Just follow before you comment. Looks like you're a rookie at this.
Actually, ilovebasketball, basketball is not the 2nd most popular sport in the world. The two most popular sports in the world are football and the formula1 racing series. F1 is big in EVERY country (Canada included) except the US.
Also, I grew up in Europe and I just can't think of a European country where basketball is more popular than football. And keep in mind that although the NBA finals may reach 1.5 billion viewers, 1.5. billion viewers actually watched the openning game of the World Cup. I doubt that even a thenth of this number watched any of the NBA games.
Football is a beautifull, dynamic, and unpredictable game. The whole complexion of a match can change in ten seconds. And the low scores and draws are sort of the whole point--they build tension and make the satisfaction derived from a goal or a win even greater. It is not easy to score a goal, hence you go crazy when it happens. You can thus understand why many people find calling football boring, especially by those who invented baseball (yawn), quite insulting.
Fortunately many young people in the US seem to be quite interested in the game. I predict it will only grow in popularity in the future.
Fair rant. I have seen this sort of argument before. There was an 'international argument' that took place regarding the issue at a forum I frequent. It got pretty heated. The thread is now locked but is good for a read if you have time http://www.121s.com/viewtopic.php?t =8678 For what it's worth, I tend to agree with you - I'm probably a bit old school but every damn sport should have a winner and a loser!!
Those many young people who seem interested in soccer, trust me, will forget it once they will become "older". Also, basketball IS the 2nd most popular sport in the world. Check the statistics about the several sports. Basketball is the 2nd most important sport in many European countries, such as Italy, where some cities are even called "basketball city" (for instance: Bologna), Spain, Turkey and many others. Basketball is the #1 sport in Lithuania (where it's considered a religion), Greece, Serbia, Croatia and some other countries.
Please don't make me laugh saying that formula1 is the 2nd sport (sport??) in the world. Most of the countries couldn't care a less about formula1. Basketball is the 2nd most popular sport in Europe and in the world. Check it out and you will see it. And just so you know, the NBA Finals are one of the most important sporting events in the world. If you was a basketball fan, you would know this. I actually read a lot of basketball stuff and i think to know some things. If you don't follow the NBA, I'm fine, but it's the most important and famous sports league in the world, so think twice before coming out with another statement like that. You can't even imagine how many people follow the NBA and all the other U.S. sports leagues in Europe.
NotRated, try to go on Google and search which is the 2nd most popular sport in the world. Thess are just some quotes (it looks like there's not only soccer outside the US, uh?):
Basketball is the second most popular sport in the world - and it is the most popular sport among the 12-19-age category. ·
Basketball in Ireland is the second most popular sport in the 12-19 age category and the third most popular participation sport for all ages. ·
It is estimated that over 150,000 people participate in the sport in Ireland at some level. ·
Basketball is recognized as the fastest growing team sport in the world
^Enough said.

Ilovebasketball plz shut up! Saying that kids who grow up loving the sport and playing it wont "foret" about it. Gah how ignorant do you have to be. Basketball is not the 2nd most pop sport in ireland. Football/soccer, rugby hell even cricket is more pop theyre. It may be popular but the level of play is #### Football/soccer will be 10 times bigger than basketball american football will ever be. It will be 20 times bigger than baseball which has gone down the gutter. Watch the world cup at least once and stop hating and come up with a decent opinion. Also can we get rid of this WOLRD Champions of football world champions of basketball etc. Last time i checked nfl was played in 2 continents. N.america/ europe. thats not the world
To everybody who commented: Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you took the time. I do think that some of you misunderstood me, though. I don't hate soccer. I have nothing against soccer. I respect its players as athletes, and I respect it as the most popular (not basketball or Formula 1) sport in the world. If it's boring to Americans, it's because we don't love it, and we don't love it because it was never really played here before the 1970's, when we already had three major sports ingrained in our social conscience. There are PLENTY of games that are extremely boring if you don't love them, like baseball, NASCAR, golf, tennis, and boxing. But all those sports, including soccer, have intricacies in strategy and technique that most non-lovers won't understand. FIFA should never, EVER, change any of its basic rules or regulations (like the size of the field or anything else) just to "Americanize" the game. If Americans don't like the game the way it is, FIFA should say a big hearty "SCREW YOU" to us. It is what it is, and it's not the most popular game in the world for no reason. It doesn't need America, and America doesn't need it. It should be a friendly "agree to disagree" situation.
For the record, I never called soccer "wussy" -- I just think ending in a tie is wussy, in ANY sport. It robs the players and fans of what they came for, which is a competition with a decided winner. I adhere to the old adage, "If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, why do we keep score?"
ilovebasketball: Thanks for agreeing, but you gotta lay off the basketball love-fest. The NBA is becoming a farce of real basketball (except in the playoffs), which is why we lose in every international basketball competition. The NBA is made for individual stars, and the rest of the world plays as a team. That's why players like Peja Stojakovic and Tony Parker have rings, and A.I. doesn't. Also, basketball is not the definitive second most popular sport in the world; I think it's a tie with baseball. While Europe could mostly care less about it, baseball is even more popular in Latin America and Asia than it is in the U.S. With the population of those two areas of the world, it's a pretty close race between baseball and basketball for second biggest sport worldwide. Formula 1 is more popular worldwide than Americans think it is, but it's probably 3rd or 4th at best.
xrooster: Thanks for the stats. That's about what I thought they'd be.
Footiefan: How can having no winner or loser be MORE dramatic than deciding a winner and loser?? That makes no sense at all, even with the most basic logic. Everybody fighting their guts out for a 2 hours and then saying, "Ahh, never mind..." is most decidely NOT dramatic. By the way, what's a "div"? I dig Brit slang, it's pretty cool. Also, nobody wore pads or helmets for the first 100 years of American football. Actually, the first game of that type played in the U.S. at the Ivy League schools was an even rougher form of rugby, with less rules and more violence (people actually were getting killed). Then around the turn of the century Walter Camp invented a whole new set of rules, introducing the "line of scrimmage" and all new rules about forward progress and scoring. That was the real invention of American football, and that separated it totally from rugby or anything else. Oddly enough, it was James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, who introduced the use of helmets to the game of American football. All the pads only became necessary when the players became so huge, strong, and fast (guys that are 6'6", 250 lbs., and can run a 4.5 sec. 40m dash are commonplace now) that they would literally pulverize a human body that was hit with no pads on. Definitely not "wussy".
I'm not name calling. Sorry if you get that impression. I'm sure you are a great guy and we would enjoy talking, laughing--get along fine. I was saying your post is hypocritical and ignorant (not you as a person) if you don't see the corollary between the WC competition and the NFL.
The NFL allows ties and they do happen, yes, just as not as much as soccer. Now, in the round of 16, soccer does a shootout, kind of like college football tie breakers (another sport I love, did you see Arkansas and Ole Miss that one time? Man alive! I think it was them...My memory can be faulty)...
OKay, so you can concede that there are a few similarities as to rules and protocol of the two cool games, thus proving that you are not hypocritical (but maybe the original point came across that way) nor are you (ignorant, sorry if my original defense of this world sport was a little high handed and pjorative).
Again, no hard feelings and I apologize if you construed my post as name calling, that was not the intent.
I only wished to present my ideas as convincingly as possible...
And name calling, true, is not the way to do that.
Blog on, bro! Hey, I like the CFL! Feterik!

Oh, yeah: I am also relieved to see you here instead of Big--AL. I called him "vacuous", which you may interpret as name calling, but he happened to enjoy my constructive comment. In his case, he accepted one defintion of it as it applied to him, as I understood...
And I hope you can learn to enjoy soccer even though I have issues with it myself, not to come across as too hypocritical myself...
I hate the offsides rule, and I like baseball, football and basketball much more than soccer.
I also really get into the Olympics and world basketball championships, so this WC love is lie a carry over from those...Even curling is good when it is nation versus nation!
Thanks for the outlet, buddy bloginski..

ilovebasketball, basketball the #1 sport in Greece, Serbia, and Croatia, you are kidding me right? :) I was born in Bulgaria actually so I am quite familiar with all of these countries. And basketball more popular than F1 in Spain and Italy? Yeah, right. The problem with F1 is that you can't practice it, so it really is a spectator sport (and yes, it is a sport). But given that there is a race every two weeks for nine months every year, the amount of global viewership that they can sustain is impressive.
On the topic of baseball, I was under the impression that pretty much no one cares about baseball outside CONCACAF and Japan. If cricket is added though, then maybe the picture changes a bit.
I agree that football does not need the US. If some Americans don't want to be part of the world's biggest event, then it's their loss. I am happy that all games are live on TV (although I wish they had better commentators) plus, there are enough Europeans in the US with whom one can enjoy watching the beautiful game.
To those who say authors like this "don't understand soccer": what the Christ is there to understand? You run around kicking a ball on the off-chance you will actually manage to get one into a giant, oversized goal. There are only two positions in soccer, goalie and the guys who run around.
I think we all need to calm down a bit, while I understand this is a Fox site and overheated screaming wankers are the norm...maybe you guys should go and put some soothing music on, perhaps U2...As to sawker, if I've said it once I've said it a lot, WE (sawker supporters), do not and are not interested in having you "people" jump on the sawker bandwagon. You just don't get it and you never, ever will, (see last 500 blogs), lets keep it that way shall we..hmmm? Let's agree to disagree!! As to bandwagon jumping, I personally am back to supporting America after their HEROIC draw against Italy, I take back all my horrible slagging Team USA.
I told ya so Roger. You are not allowed to have an opinion on here without being pummled with ridiculous names calling and statistics. I had about 25 comments on all of my posts COMBINED. Until I posted "Why Soccer Sucks". That one blog entry has received about 125 comments so far. I've been called so many names and been attacked for being an ignorant american that all I can do is sit back and be thankful that I can voice my opinion freely without fear of having to live anywhere else but America.
My blog got so much attention that now I'm being discussed on other peoples blogs. It is so mind numbing. Wait until you see my next post. I wonder how much #### I'll get for that.
I checked out your website. I will deffinately look you up next time in Texas. I love good music and I love Austin.
blogclincherific---aren't the "mickey mouse hands" gloves enough to differentiate a goalie from a non goalie? well that and the fact that he stands in front of the goal for 90 minutes. i know nothing about soccer. but if i were to turn on a world cup match( i won't) i could probably pick out the goalie for each team if they were wearing the same jersey as the rest of the team.
NotRated: Do a search on google and then tell me if i am wrong. Basketball is the 2nd sport in Spain, Italy, Turkey etc.; the 1st in countries such as Serbia, Slovenia, Greece. Have you ever watched the basketball games that are played in those countries? I watch them. Thousand and thousand of people attend games. Last Summer Serbia hosted the European basketball championship and the arena was packed with about 20,000 fans, like you can see in an NBA game. Check out on Google and read what they say about basketball in these countries. Also, how do you think there are so many non-American players in the NBA? There must be a reason. That's because the popularity of basketball is becoming bigger and bigger every day and the level of play is improving a lot outside the U.S. and many more people are playing it. And it's only going to be bigger (basketball is the fastest growing team sport in the world). With all these international players, the interest for the NBA, who is VERY popular in Europe, is increasing even more. Right now Germans are going crazy not only for the World Cup, but also for the NBA Finals, since Dirk Nowitzky is a German and is the star of the Dallas Mavericks, who are playing the Heat in the Finals. Watch an Euroleague game and you will see how many fans attend european basketball games. You will be surprised.

Have you ever heard David Stern (he's the NBA Commissioner). He always says that soccer is the 1st sport in the world and basketball is 2nd. He's not an ####, but he's unanimously considered the best sports manager in the world, along with the (former) NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
I live in Italy and here basketball is very popular. Yes, there are some cities called "basketball city", because basketball is more popular than soccer in these cities. I even live close to one of them, the city of Bologna. This city has 2 big basketball teams and when they play each other, the city goes nut. Everyone stops to watch the game. It's something very similar to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry. I experienced it in first person.
Germany/Costa Rica was watched by 1.5 billion of people? Yea sure. Please. It was surely watched by millions of people, especially in Germany and in Costa Rica (that is a SMALL country btw.!) I doubt that all the world was interested in this game, was interested in watching the German team "destroying" their opponents. I give you an example. In Italy they are broadcasting only the games of the Italian team on public TV. If you want to watch the other games of the World Cup, you have to pay (pay per view). And the ratings of this game were very low. The NBA Finals are getting way better ratings than the World Cup here in Italy (with the exception of the games in which the Italian team is involved, obviously). And Italy is maybe the country (along with Brazil) in which soccer is more popular than any other countries.
Look, this discussion is becoming pointless. I think the best test for the popularity of a sport is, given the opportunity, what would most people choose to be. If they can choose, I am pretty sure 99.99% of Europeans (or people all over the world outside the US for that matter) will choose 1. Top football player > F1 Pilot >> top basketball player or 2. F1 pilot > top football player >> top basketbal player.
FlyingPig, ONCE AGAIN, I direct you to my comments on your "Soccer Sucks" "blog"--and here you are moaning and whining again, after you pissed on a sport that is having its premiere event, you get called out for being an ingrate, and now you're the victim? Really, just shut up. You think you're getting jeered because you're an American voicing his opinion? You're getting jeered because you're an American acting like a jerk. Big difference. Word of advice here, my fellow countryman: you have the right to be an American, you have the right to be a jerk, but you don't have the right to be shielded from criticism for acting like a jerk. Grow up--the world is not designed to allow you to do anything you want and get away with it without comment.
Go back to your NASCAR viewing. You're embarrassing my country with your thoughts on soccer, so just shut up.
Footbal (the one you play wit your feet) is themost popular sport in the world. Basketball may be popular in the Balkan countries but not as popular as football. The rules need not be simplified or changed for Americans, we are smart enough to understand it, though not all of us.The only difference is that there are commercial interests ( NFL & MLB to name but 2)that do not want soccer to succeed in America and give up their powerful position to another entity. FIFA wants to control the world! That is why they make sure there will always be a USA team and and an Asian team in the finals. They do not want to give up on those markets. Most of Real Madrid and Manchester United shirt sales are from Asia and the US. That is a lot of money for a David Beckham shirt!
No matter what some Americans say or cry about, Football is the Greatest sport on Earth, Period!
You're just plain stupid expecting not to hear bad things from Football lovers when you told them Football ####. Look at "ilove basketball". See how he reacted when someone told him that basketball is not the 2nd most popular sport in the world.
Did you guys know that the U.S. actually proposed to FIFA playing games in 4 periods before the WorldCup in the U.S.? Something like 15~20 minutes in each period in order to play more commercials. What a joke! If they tried to insist on that idea, FIFA probably took away the WorldCup from the U.S..
BBall is the 2nd most popular sport in the world. Like I said, check it out on Google and then let's see if it's not the 2nd sport in the world. I KNOW that soccer is the most popular sport, but bball is clearly the 2nd. Now I tell you also this: the 3rd most popular sport is volleyball (and i am saying this despite the fact that i can't stand it). Read some things, read whatever you want, and you will see that i'm right.
I have to admit it. It would be a great thing to do 4 quarters during a soccer game. This would make soccer more appealing to my eyes. It would be more similar to basketball or American football.
Last edited by ilovebasketball on June 18th at 3:25 PM.
Well, loooking on the bright side guys, at least we have agreed that football is the most popular sport in the world. That is progress!
Do you think it's really true that the US federation thought there is a non-zero chance to adopt 15-20 minute quarters? :)) I mean, I really love the USA and its people but, frankly, on some issues Americans can be quite naive.
The most important and popular sport in the world. In Europe and Latin America is the number one sport in all countries, in Africa is almost the most important sport as well its becoming a mayor popular sport in China, Korea, Japan and the Middle East.
Weakness: Its no so popular in India, USA and Canada. Women Football is not as popular as men.
2) Basketball
The second most popular sport in the World. Its one of the most popular sports in USA, Canada, the second in importance in Europe, Brasil, Argentina and China. nº1 sport in Lithuania.
Weakness: It’s a sport for tall people, not so popular in Africa, the middle east, India, and East Asia.
