I consider myself one of the purest fight fans left on the planet. I sometimes find myself surfing the cable channels looking for any matchup, on any given day of the week. When I first heard about the Roy Jones Jr. v. Bernard Hopkins fight, I asked myself the same question millions of Americans asked: WHY??? And then I heard that it was going to be a Pay-Per-View event, and I fell out in the floor laughing! Who in their right mind would pay $55 to see this? O.J. Simpson won't even be tuning into this one, since he has been found guilty of stealing cable (The cable plug fit, so they couldn't acquit). I have since removed the illegal cable box from my home, so I won' t be tempted to tune in to this fight in March. To fulfill my temptation to view this fight, I decided set up this match on the playstation. Because my wife no longer allows my friends to visit the house (something to do with her finding that video tape of my bachelor party), I convinced her to participate in this boxing exhibition. Because I wanted to see Roy Jones get "knocked the #### out", I convinced her to fight as Roy and I was B-Hop. Because she has only played the game twice (under duress), I figured that Bernard would make easy work of Roy in the first round..."Lets get ready to ruuummmble!" In the first round, I immediately went in for the kill. However, it seemed that I could not land a solid shot. Although I took the first round on points, I was upset that B-Hop couldn't take care of business. My wife, apparently sensing my frustration, decided to make Roy Jones come out in the second round with the same aggression that I had tried in the 1st round. Surprisingly, she was able to utilize Roy Jones' "playstation" speed to it's fullest, and actually caused noticeable damage to B-Hop's face.
She actually took round 2. At this point, I was p!ssed. She began to talk smack, telling me that she was going to hurry up and knock me out in this round, so she could go and watch America's Top Model. This was an insult to my manhood. So I had to figure out a way to come back, just to save face. So as the 3rd round began, I had B-Hop work the body for the first half of the round. At the one minute mark of the 3rd round, I had started to see some progress, so I went in for the knockout. B-Hop had Roy on the ropes and it looked like I might be able to pull off a K.O. in the last seconds of the round. Then the most incredible, unimaginable playstation fluke occurred. Roy Jones slipped one of my uppercuts and caught B-Hop with an overhand left.
"Down goes Hopkins, down goes Hopkins." 1, 2, 3, 4...get up B-Hop...5, 6, 7....get your #### up Hopkins...8. Hopkins finally makes it to his feet. The referee asks if he is alright. Hopkins still has a dazed look on his face. The ref puts up his arm and stops the fight! NOOOOOOOO!!!! How did this happen?!! My wife scores a knockout with Roy Jones Jr. in the 3rd round!!! She is jumping up and down screaming in sheer delight. You can't imagine the humilty of losing to a woman in a sporting event.
To make a long story short, I have since sold that defective playstation on ebay. Now that's what's up!
Nice piece stylz - I too am a fight fan. I once was a huge fan, as were many others, of Roy Jones, but I too wonder why? These guys have both proven that they are waaaayyyy past their prime. Are they still a draw?
Why do you suppose it is, or seems, that boxing is the hardest sport for an athlete to walk away from?
NorthSide, they might have been a draw three years ago, but definitely not now. I don't think it's just boxers that find it hard to walk away from the game. Look at Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan and Palmiero.

I agree with that sentiment, but it seems like boxers - no matter how many times they lose - want to come back. Other athletes, in different sports seem to know when they are done. Jordan did, Rice did. They just didn't feel it anymore... This was after they gave it the old junior college try of course.
Evander still fights or wants to... Gatti - who I am a big fan of, is a great show, but gets pummeled almost every time out now.
Yes, boxers definitely seem to have it (Can't go home syndrome)worse than other athletes. It seems to touch all of them (from the greats to the lesser knowns) in the same way.
That was hilarious Rob. As for the upcoming fight, it also has me confused. But being the boxing lover that I am, I will have to tune in. Two of the greatest boxers of the last 15 years are set to destroy each other. How could you ask for a better ending? They both realize they don't stand a chance against the tough young talents that hold the belts, so why not see who the best oldy is.
It's either going to be a great fight to the end or a dancing contest. I don't really think either one has knock out power anymore.
As everyone can see, I saved the best for last. Most likely another case of "too little too late" in the eyes of the judges. Too bad I didn't find out about the contest before just last week(12/22). Otherwise, I could have done some serious damage!

Love boxing and that play station game too. Roy got no business fighting anyone anymore. I sure won't pay for it, but I will watch it later. I'm drawn to boxing. I like to watch people beat each other up I guess. Nothing but knockouts on tv is great too. My friends and I always say--Great fighters don't always make great fights, great matchups do. Although a great matchup with great fighters is a thing to behold. Castillo-Corrales 1 was Da Bomb.
Thaks Rob. I would love to make it to the sweet 16, but this competition is so loosely defined, it is hard to tell who will make it.
As to Roy Jones, I lived in Pensacola years ago when he was the champion. He bought his motorcycles from my in-laws dealership. He was one tough SOB, but as most fighters, they do not have guaranteed contracts like a NBA player that lasts for say 10 years. THey fight as long as they can get a payday. Money talks, and if someone would pay George FOreman, he would enter the ring again.
Very funny post, but always bet on the woman, ask JBOLD.

This fight may be a few years late, but tell me what potential fight out there will bring in more PPV dollars than Hopkins-Jones? I can't think of one...
Nappy, this fight has no meaning. Neither fighter has a belt. Both fighters have lost their last 2 fights (Roy was knocked out in two out of his last 3 fights). Who cares at this point? You must be a salesman for the promoter. If you are, you can bet that you won't make your commission on this one! Because this fight won't even sell out the arena.
Laker fan, I am not surprised that you would be gulible enough to watch this one. Heck, look at your name. You probably think the Lakers are very entertaining too. And these are words from an EX Laker fan that recognizes that the Laker's current management looks like the old Clipper's bungling management. Remember the glory days, because the Laker's are now the Clipper's "JV team".
you R an #### Roy Jones beat Bernard Hopkins for the IBF middle weight championship with one good hand. He had broken his right hand before the fight and still fought and still beat Bernard Hopkins. So unless he brakes both hands he would dominate Hopkins. Second Roy Jones is the best fighter ever. Anyone that thinks tarver has any talent is an #### first fight Roy lost was the luckiest knock out punch ever, because Roy was dominating the whole fight up tell this and Tarver through a desperation punch which he was looking at the ground when he through he couldve hit the ref. but got lucky and hit Roy just over his gaurd.( O Roy Saw it and had his hand up but it was the luckiest punch that went Right over by a miracle. Second fight Roy had to come back down to lightheavyweight and had to lose like 30 pounds to get there. So I dont even know how he got through that 30 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats how could anyone fight like that when it was not fat but muscle and water he could only lose
Parker, I think your "run-on sentence" tirade proves who the real #### is. I bet you would argue for a James Toney vs. Rahman rematch also. Get a life and quit responding to blogs that are over three months old. I refuse to debate with a "pot shot imbecile" that has not even contributed a blog of their own. Go waste someone else's time LOSER. And I only refer to you as a loser because it seems that is your preference with your worship of a loser like Roy Jones!
Like every red-blooded American male, I am the ultimate sports fan... blah, blah, blah. I am sure that all the bloggers might say something along these lines. Let me get straight to the point... I believe opinions are like A-holes...eve rybody has one! And while my opinion does not always get the popular vote, I am not at all afraid to throw someone under the bus, if they deserve it. I hope this does not result in any hard feelings, but if it does, "man up" and deal with it. Now that's what's up!
You can find some of my best work in the trash bin at the back parking lot of FOX Sports studios (and the Best Damn Sports Show producers still refuse to take any of my phone calls).
