On a day when Ohio State was leading its home opener 13-0 early and LSU led last year’s giant-killer Appalachian St by 31 points at halftime, it appeared at least early on that Hawaii would give the Florida Gators a fight. Florida won the coin toss and deferred to give Hawaii the football to start the game. The Rainbow Warriors then proceeded to drive down the field and take what seemed like a lot longer than three minutes off the clock before having to punt. The Gators were unable to score on their first possession.
Florida's first quarter woes continued as they were once again unable to stop the Rainbow Warriors on their next possession. That was until Ahmad Black ended a promising Hawaii drive with an interception in the end zone. Twelve minutes into their season, the Gators had already committed five penalties and looked like they had plenty of kinks to work out on both sides of the ball. Hawaii had controlled the ball for 8:46 of the first quarter, running 17 plays.
A thirty-four yard Tate Casey reception later and the Gators finally looked like the offense of yesteryear. Gator fans then got their first look at track star Jeffrey Demps, who scrambled for a ten yard reception. Shortly thereafter, Tim Tebow reminded the 88,000+ eager fans in the Swamp why he’s last year’s Heisman winner. From the nine yard line, Tebow scrambled right, then left, on a busted option play to score what appeared to be a touchdown. Instant replay revealed he had stepped out-of-bounds on the one yard line. One play later and eighteen minutes into their season, Tebow handed off to Brandon James who scored the first of assuredly many Gator touchdowns this season.
Less than one minute later, Florida delivered a Major Wright cross to Hawaii’s hopes as he stepped in front of Greg Alexander pass and ran it back for pay dirt for a 14-0 lead.
A flustered Hawaii soon seemed incapable of moving the football as the new-and-improved Gator defense settled in comfortably, forcing another punt. With five minutes left in the half, Brandon James reminded fans why he is one of the nation’s most exciting special teams players by returning a Hawaii punt 74 yards for a touchdown. In the very first half of their season, Florida had already scored one offensive, one defensive and one special teams touchdown.
The wheels continued to come off for Hawaii as another turnover, resulting from a play which new head coach Greg McMackin chose not to review, resulted in a touchdown from one of what promises to be Florida’s most exciting playmakers on the very next possession. A thirty-three yard touchdown run from Chris Rainey, with some outstanding blocking by Riley Cooper, allowed him to waltz into then end zone untouched. Hawaii could not get into the locker room quickly enough to grab the concessionary, white towel.
At halftime, the Gators led 28-0 with Heisman hopeful Tim Tebow accounting for none of the Gator scores.
Coming out of the locker room, the Gator offense once again stalled, as they were forced to punt on fourth and fifteen from their own 25. That was until Coach Meyer called Chas Henry’s number for a fake punt, who ran seventeen yards for the first down to keep the floodgates lodged wide open. On the very next play from scrimmage, Jeff Demps ran between the tackles, sixty-two yards to the amazement of even his coaches. And just as fans were starting to complain about Tebow’s lack of numbers, on the ensuing Gator possession, he hit Louis Murphy for a 48 yard touchdown pass for his first of the season. 42-0 Florida.
In mop-up duty, big Cam Newton added another rushing touchdown to increase the Gator lead to forty-nine. A late 80-yard interception, again by Ahman Black, gave the Gators an even 28 points in the second quarter and 28 points in the third. Even Hurricane Fay didn’t bring this much rain in North Florida. The Gators ended up victorious by the final score of 56-10.
After a rusty first quarter, the Florida Gators finally showed they dressed to impress. Even the stoic Urban Meyer was seen smiling in post-game interviews. Florida came out with something to prove and showed they’re deep at every position. The backfield, whether running the option or between the tackles, boasts a variety of superstars that could start for any other program in the nation. Four different Gators scored on the ground and none of them were named Tim Tebow. While the receiving corps remains a question mark, the backfield is talented enough to keep opposing secondaries honest. And Tebow is still the toughest quarterback in the nation to bring down. Although he only finished the game 9-for-14 for 137 yards passing and 9 carries for 37 yards, one got the impression he’s only getting his feet wet. This Florida team won’t need him like they did last season. Special teams also played well and Brandon James proved he’s a constant threat. The Gator defense, a question mark all of last season, forced six turnovers and led many to believe Charlie Strong has turned things around. Hawaii led in time of possession, only because the Gator offense continue to score at a rapid-fire face. Including interception and punt returns, the Gators had five scoring possessions under :38 seconds.
The Gators face University of Miami Hurricanes next weekend in Gainesville at 8 pm in front of what could be a record crowd. The Gators have not beaten their in-state rivals in nearly thirty years.
Rev.,
Real good post buddy! Though the team started out sloppy they picked it up and did what an SEC team is supposed to do in an out of conference game and that's smash the opposition!
My Tigers looked great also and I can't wait to get into the conference games. That's when it get's real and exciting.
I'll be leaving here at about 3 a.m. so I'll be in touch and let you know what's up.
Dude- the Gators have 'Backs!!! Lot's of em'... And they are good. In the first game of the season, Tebow didn't have to break out the cape. Add the Harvin option and good grief- that offense looks stout. I'm not quite sold on the Defense yet with Hawaii's lack of June Jones. All that said- let's hope that the Gators play a PAC Team in the National Championship. Oh yeah- I'm heartbroken over my Beaver loss (that's Oregon State). Good luck Rev.
Thanks, Or. I tried to keep an objective eye when breaking down the game. But they're good. They're very good. And the backfield is not like anything I've seen before.
Reverend Rhythm If anything we've seen how good the Gators'll be and their running attack was exmplorary as too was the defense. But in saying that the usual stalwarts have shown their mettle.

It's always a pleasure to read your blogs. I live in Honolulu, but spent several months in Gainesville when my wife and I tried to make a go of it on the mainland. I spent many a night a D-Flys eating sushi and appreciating the many fine UF co-eds, on the sly of course. I am an alumni of both Georgia and Hawaii. Anyway, Florida looked great, but I don't think the UH gtame is the measuring stick you need for assesing your defense or your running game. UH's offense was miserable, the defense tried to keep them in the game. But, hey, this UH team is a far cry from last years team. Brennan would have put up some points on your boys, no question. We lost all our receivers and obviously haven't figured out the QB situation, although I think local boy Inoke Funake proved to be their best option. I'm not trying to take anything away from the UF Defense, or your RB's, after all, the score was 56-10. I just think you need a better opponent to truly gague things. Anyway, I look forward to November 1. It should be a game for the ages...we may have lost big, but I surfed and BBQ'd today and am enjoying a margarita and a tropical sunset as we speak...Aloha braddah, and here's to the start of another college football season

Glad to see I have another regular. That Georgia-Hawaii game in January must have been a bear for you to watch.
While I understand your team lost a lot of talent, never mind their head coach, I do take comfort in the fact that we have a number of offensive threats in our backfield, which we haven't had in years past.
It's nice to see Meyer's recruiting class finally show that he can motivate kids into coming to a program that's among the best in the country.
Personally, as a Gator who has NEVER seen us beat Miami.... I'm looking forward to next Saturday. And beyond.
UGA vs. HI was a miserable game. I wanted the Dawgs to win, but also wanted Brennon to have a good game. C'est la Vis. He's made a good Redskin thus far.
If you ever find yourself in the Aloha state we'll show ya a good time. Sun, surf, and all the beautiful ladies you could dream of.
Good luck against the Canes. I have no love for them. Win all your games, except for your date with destiny on November 1, 2008.

What's impressive about the Gators and Meyer in particular was that in seeing the deficiencies there on the team he made the necessary adjustments . That's the trait of a great coach and a team. And it's my belief that they'll acquit themselves well this upcoming season.
And as you'd expect there's that feelgood story that comes on Opening Day.
Navy's win over Towson and Shun White's play makes him seem like the second coming of Tony Dorsett.
I will say this. NOBODY expected Meyer to go for a fake punt on 4th and 15 from his own 25.
I like where his head's at. He knows he has the talent for something special this year. These are finally all his players. Let's see if he can do this.
Rev, good game by the gators! But, like I am telling SC fans, both teams wins were against inferior teams, so lets not get to excited just yet. Still, they looked pretty good. Lsu looked good against app. state too, but, they were supposed to look good. Good post as well!
Reverend Rhythm
I think that Meyer and Carroll are two of the most innovative coaches in all of college football. And that in ofitself is a bold acclamation to my mind. They think outside the box when it matters.
And here's English pootie tang to wet your appetite. English rose by any other name is known as Kate Moss.
I'll be returning stateside on the 8th September.
Yesterday I attended an Ishin-Ryu martial arts expose' and at the same time met up with a couple of guys that I'd trained and alongside with in the British military. It was fun to be there and it most of all impressed my nephew. He somewhat thinks of me as being some ol' f*art whose time has come and gone but when I challenged him to take me on in whatever discipline he chose he soon backed off.
He knew that he didn't have what it'd take.
Here I am at 48 years of age and I think that a this time of my life I believe that I've still got something to offer.
Still though, it's about execution. I've seen Florida come out in openers and look sluggish.
I will say USC impressed me. Before yesterday, I honestly thought Ohio State would take you guys. After watching you yesterday, I'm not so sure, particularly with a Beanie that's not 100%.
Reverend Rhythm
I'm in London at present visiting family , friends and some of my former army ( British Royal Marines)buddies. We're trying to get something together whereby vets stateside and vets from here who've served in Iraq can get together. Be it via e-mails or via some other means.
As for Dundee as a whole the town is on the downside at present having to cut jobs and the revenues that they'd hoped for is no longer there 'cause of the housing slump. So much of what they'd hoped to gain was primarily from the impact fees from new housing. But with the economic climate so bad and the developers slowdown. It has hit the town really hard. I can't say that I didn't expect it. If that'sthe only thing that the economy is predicated on then that's what tends to happen.
Once I return I've got an interview with a large financial investment house who's looking for a research analyst/economist to work in their Mergers & Acquisitions Dept.
I'm hoping that things'll work out on that front. But if not it's no big thing as they're the ones who approached me to see if I was interested.

Man, you guys are getting hawaii and Miami on down turns....though Hawaii is usually one giant down turn. Well you got some tuffies against Georgia and LSU, but if they were you guys would have a really tough sked.
You were winning by 5 touchdown and you were complaining cuz your QB didnt have stats...Sure you werent playing an EA sports football game and not watching one??
Sheesh, I dont think I will be able to afford that this year(complaining while winning) as Michigan rebuilds...the UofM's offense is absolutely woeful!

What's the league suppose to do when they talk to these kids ? But they're too dumb to heed the constructive advice they're being given. I can have any sympathy for them whatsoever. Let's say that either one of 'em had got behind the wheel of a vehicle and injured someone ? Would we still be opining the topic ?
Reverend Rhythm
Which of 'em have a degree ? From what I understand neither Chalmers or his associate had a degree. And even with one it doesn't make 'em any brighter. It's about accountability and taking responsibility for one's own actions.
And at the same time what are the NBA and in particular Stern prepared to do ? They'll more likely than not just brush it off as an isolated incident. When in reality we know that the practice is still widespread within the game. I don't even believe that they test for it in the NBA.
But as I'd alluded to before what'd we be saying had Chalmers injured someone in a vehicular accident ?
Reverend Rhythm
The problem is that so much store is placed in these kids with regard to an athletic scholarship. But if they choose to pi#s it all away then the concern ought to be about who they'll make trample over on the way to the top.
If Chalmers had gone out after his weed festivities and injured someone by driving then what would we be discussing instead. It's all about accountability. And when it comes to athletes they're all a bunch of prissy primadonnas. They'll have their publicists show 'em in a good light after their malfeasance. But if they'd actually stop to think then it wouldn't be so bad.
My word for as#holes like Chalmers and his associate ........ don't let the door hit you in the a#s on the way out.
Guys like that need to learn some discipline before they harm someone else other than themselves.
You may not share some of those ideals but I think it sends a bad message to the kids out there that look up to these athletes.
Take it while you can. The Canes are in rebuilding mode right now and as history will prevail, the Canes will be back. Maybe not next year or the year after, but soon. Then they will reclaim the throne as THE U in Florida. All sports programs whether in college or the pros go through cycles, but the cream always rises to the top. My problem with the Gator football program is that they didn't man up when they dumped Miami from their schedule all those years ago because they didn't want to have that one loss every season. If the Canes did the same thing, the cry would go out that Miami was too chicken to play the Gators. Don't hold your breath about catching Miami in championships. 5 is a long way to go for any school to pass.
Miami won't be on Florida's regular schedule any time soon. I think the next time they play them is 2013. With their already difficult conference schedule, and Florida State on the slate regularly, the program understandably doesn't want to shoot themselves in the foot. I mean the objective is to win a national title, right? Most big schools won't schedule two huge in-state, high profile, non-conference games. That just ain't how it's done, baby.
