Random Tuesday Night Thoughts
May 20, 2008 | 8:12PM | report this

Charles Barkley had to pay a $40,000 finance charge for his latest gambling debt??  And to think I complain about the $1.50 convenience fee when I use an ATM that’s not my own bank.

PJ Brown was a masterful pickup for Danny Ainge.

I’m not sure who the Bulls will pick at #1, but they can’t go wrong with either Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley.  I’m inclined to think they’ll go with the local boy, Rose.  With the emergence of Chris Paul and Deron Williams, teams will need a quality ball-handler to compete.  Kirk Hinrich has been a bust and would be much better suited as a backup.  Similarly, either draft pick will fit in nicely with the Heat at number two.

The Chicago Bulls head coaching position suddenly becomes a lot more coveted.  Do you think Mike D’Antoni’s thinking he jumped the gun by taking that Knicks job?

As if there were any doubt, Detroit and Boston are clearly the two best TEAMS in the Eastern Conference.

I had totally forgotten that Flip Saunders used to coach KG in Minnesota.  You’d think that would work at least somewhat in Detroit’s favor.  Yeah, right, like anyone has an answer for the Big Ticket.

One sportscaster tonight commended these Detroit Pistons for accomplishing so much with ‘no hall-of-famers.’  Hmmmm…. are you sure about that?  None of those guys in the Hall?  I think it’s a little too early to definitely say that.  Billups has a Finals MVP under his belt and ‘Sheed is one of the most versatile players the game has seen in recent years.  If they manage to win another title, I’d beg to differ with that statement.

Why is the Fleet Center hazier than any other arena?  Do they allow smoking in there like they did back in the day?   That’s why all those old black and white photographs turned out looking so cool.

Playing an intense Game 7 against Cleveland two days ago does not seem to have slowed the Celtics down one bit.

Jack and Coke is a truly, delectable beverage.

Rodney Stuckey is good.  Where did this kid come from?

Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breem were at Fenway for Jon Lester’s no-hitter last night.  How cool is that?

In the first half, Detroit’s taken significantly more free throws, yet the Celtics have more points in the paint.  Go figure.

Tayshaun Prince was an absolutely perfect fit for this Piston team.  Keep in mind Tubby Smith recruited both he and Rajon Rondo (that one’s for Bluegrass).

Fifteen people exchanging a Heineken makes me think of warm beer and backwash.  What exactly were they thinking with that commercial?

Matt Ryan’s rich.

In the first half, Boston shot 51% from the floor.  Detroit shot 39% and only trailed by a single point.  One need look no further than free throw shooting discrepancy (Detroit had 11 more points from the line).

Where are my Orlando Magic exit interview questions?  ‘Nique, get on the ball.

Did Jay Bilas say you can’t make a mistake with the number one pick??  Perhaps he’s never heard of Kwame Brown or Michael Olowokandi.

LeBron needs to add a post-up game to his repertoire.

This Hulk movie should be much better than the first.  No truth to the rumor that I turned down the role as body double due to other obligations.

It’s nice to see professional basketball players on both teams consistently knock down 17-footers.  Well, that is, everyone except Ray Allen.

Rip Hamilton can NOT guard Paul Pierce.

To celebrate my thousandth viewing of KG’s Gatorade commercial, I thought I’d share with you my favorite all-time KG commercial

With this game getting chippy in the fourth quarter, who do you think will be the first player ejected from a game in this series?

Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace have been among the top five power forwards in the league for the past decade.  I could watch these guys go at it for hours.

With six assists and five steals, Rajon Rondo is slowly starting to prove me wrong.  As is Doc Rivers ability to coach this team.

The Celts looked good tonight.  I’m not sure they can beat the Lakers, but they look pretty darn good.

I thought that $40K vig goes to the county/state or Rocko, who was paid a retainer to knock Barkley's out.

Tonight it looked like Detroit wasn't trying to win, but guarantee a seven game series. Ok by me.

Hulk2...skipping that CGI movie.

The haze in the Fleet. Remember the fog in the old Garden? Back in the 80s. They had the court over the hockey ice. The weather was unseasonably hot during the playoffs, and the Garden had fog over the court. Well it was either fog, or Red's cigar smoke.

Nicely done. RIP should have been ejected with that flagrant foul. I'm still steamed over that. Even I am sick of the "O Fortuna" themed Gatorade commercial, but dang if I don't have the song on my Ipod. I think it should be the Trojans' new fight song...it's very Roman-like, don't ya think?

And that was more a frustration foul on Rip's part. That's why they let it slide.

Ed,

Remember when the US Woman's Soccer team won the World Cup and Brandi Chastain scored that goal and ripped off her shirt?

Well, when she beats them in foosball, KG and his boys stand there and ask... "What's up with the shirt?"

Classic, man.

I think that Paxson and the Bulls can't go wrong with either pick. Beasley or Rose would be a great addition to the team. What they definitely need and of that I'm sure we can all agree on is a proven scorer. Other than Luol Deng there's not much offense on this Bulls' team. And that's most certainly what's needed if they're to contend in the East.

As to Gruden how do you feel that he'll deal with the Earnest Graham situation ? He's brought back Dunne. Whose stated that his return wasn't encumbent on him being a back running back. An then you've still got Gruden not wanting to relent on giving Graham an improved contract after the sterling work that he'd done for the team. Never mind the fact that you'v still got the broken down 'Cadillac' Williams still within the team's midst.

That's mos certainly why I find Gruden so infuriating along with his sidekick Bruce Allen. They'd rather do things on the cheap than pay for either class or quality. And they've still got to contend with Jeff Garcia also in terms of an improved contract.
Do stop me if you've heard all this cr*ap before ? It is becoming so repetitive isn' it ?

It goes without saying even though they've brought the Bucs a Superbowl and some modicum of success. It hasn't amounted to much beyond that now has it ?

I agree that Pax is in a win-win situation. I think he'll go with whoever wows them the most during the tryout period.

Regarding Graham, although he had a nice season, and is a Florida Gator, I still don't see him as a full time back in the NFL. Obviously neither does Gruden.

Talking heads like Bilas and Stephen A come a dime a dozen. And their alleged overall knowledge of the game can be best summed in saying that it could be written on the back of a first class stamp.

Gruden wouldn't know a good running back if it came up behind him and bit him in the #### !
He chose Williams over Ronnie Brown and had the chance to land Stephen Jackson as a draft pick and chose not to.
An now he thinks an aging Warrick Dunn will be the answer to the Bucs' prayers as far as the running and receving game is concerned ?
Are you kidding me ?

Actually, tophat, I don't mind Stephen A. although from what I've read on the blogosphere, I may be in the minority.

And it's almost safe to say both Auburn boys Williams AND Brown have been NFL busts. I don't either was the right pick. I agree with you, I'd love to see a quality back line up in the Tampa Bay backfield. I'm just not sure Graham's that guy.

Ouch, please don't tell me we could have drafted Stephen Jackson. You just ruined my day.

They may well call him 'Cadillac' but runs like a Yugo and catches the ball like an effeminate male.

Too many Bucs' though blinded by loyalty ought to have a dos of reality once in a while. Williams was never tht good and those first four games of his NFL career are an aberration that's so far back in one's rear view mirrors that it's now become a distant memory. He's done nothing since just like Michael Clayton !

You and I know that Stephen A just put its out there either to be whimsical or to incite a response. Rarely does he say anything of any real relevance socially or on sports as a whole.
And we're meant to take him either at his word or as a serious well thought out sport's journalist. Hell I'd rather rea a blog by Sad*aam Hus*sein than anything by Smith at this juncture. The man can be an absolute mo*ron as if his knowledge is all knowing.
Are he and Tom Cruise cut from the same cloth ?

Beckles and Diaz are the highlights of my mornings during the weekdays. As for Silio I can take him or leave him. He's so pious and clueless the majority of the time. More so as a Gator and Noles' hater .
And though his love the 'U' is ingrained even he is now beginning to see the light once and for all. They're never going to return to thos hallowed heights of yesteryear. They're just not that good anymore and the top talent that they use to get instate is now going elsewhere.

Mike & Mike can be hilarious but there are times when they just grate on my friggin' nerves.
In terms of real sport's radio entertainment within C Florida it has become really mundane and not worth the time of day.
Cowherd use to be fun to listen to but even he has become self engratiating.

The new Hulk will be better for no other reason than Ed Norton is playing the lead. That alone raises the bar.

P.J. was a masterful pickup for Ainge.

The next time Jay Bilas says something insightful, it will be the first time he does.

I'll take Chivas Regal on the rocks over Jack and Coke any day.

Somewhere, right now, D'Antoni is slamming his head inside of a locker.

Billups might make the HOF, Sheed might feel the wrath of sportwriters and never make it, although I'm not sure he'll have the numbers.

Entertaining read Rev.

The haze in Staples is purple...

I do admit, I love the music in the KG commercial,
but if it weren't for Tivo - I don't think I'd have any hair left, they show it so damn often.
(as a Lakers loyalist, it's hard to ####)
Buck Foston.

Heinekin is a tasty beverage, but that ad is lame.

Rodney Stuckey was projected to go to the Lakers in all the mock drafts...too bad he didn't.

As a native of L.A., it helps to have Paul Pierce and Tayshaun Prince (both from Los Angeles) to keep me interested in the goings on in the LEast.

If LeBron gets a post up game and learns to shoot,
it will be like when Happy Gilmore learned to putt...OVER.
...I think that croc that got Chubbs' hand in the movie may have gotten to Ray Allen's sac, he's M.I.A.

I think the final four are truly the best teams in the NBA.

My wife called Edward Norton a sellout for doing The Hulk, .....sheeeit, for the $20 mil, I'd remake The Crying Game.

I don't think ANYONE can guard PP at the moment.

"The Celts looked good tonight. I’m not sure they can beat the Lakers, but they look pretty darn good."...Sweet music to my soul.

I was pretty ripped about the poor coaching for the Cavs last weekend. You would think that having the ball with a time-out and down one point, you would make sure to drop the bucket and go ahead for the first time. It would boost your teams confidence and make a statement to Boston. But no, instead of driving it into the lane and drawing at least a foul, they danced around the outside where Boston was able to defend. That lost the game right there and I knew there was no way that Cleveland would come back. As much as I respect Boston, I would have liked to see James move to the finals again. If I owned the Cavs, I would have not only fired the coach, but I would have given him a serious ####-whoop'n. By the way.....what's up Rev?

I see you in the NASCAR section every so often, but you know I don't speak that language. I'll still stop by every so often to say hey.
