Vick and Second Chances
Aug 22, 2007 | 7:21AM | report this

Everyone is talking about how America is the Land of Second Chances, and Vick deserves to be given another opportunity in the NFL. This all sounds good, but we really have to re-examine this math.

Let's examine this: Vick has been engaging in criminal activity for at least seven years (God knows what else he's been doing, that family is capable of anything), and he's been put in jail once. This adds up to ONE blown chance? This is the same as some NBA player who gets caught with marijuana and is given another chance?

We know that Vick has engaged in criminal activity on dozens (perhaps hundreds) of occasions. So what we're doing is forgiving most of those infractions simply because the authorities didn't notice most of them.

Worse is that everyone is talking about how Vick has 'seen the light' and 'he's gotten a wake-up call'. Funny how that happened only after getting caught, after the 134th time that he did something illegal. Shouldn't he be punished for not seeing the light after the 9th time? Or the 38th time? It's okay to us that his conscience only exists when he's wearing hand-cuffs and being told that he's about to lose $100,000,000?

I'm not saying that he should be banned forever, I'm simply telling you not to have faith in Vick emerging from jail a changed man, and not to criticize the NFL or the Falcons for whatever punitive action they take. The way I see it, he's had plenty of chances to get his life back on track, this is the just the first blown chance that we're aware of.

ABOUT ME

Regicide
... For a short while, I am going to forget that there are local sports in the Seattle area. I really don't have much choice in the matter. The only decent team I have is the Huskies basketball team ... and they're currently handing their future to a 5'8" ballhog ... my hatred of these players has been well-chronicl
ed. I hate Isaiah Thomas and I don't want to root for a team with him on it.
