How the Broncos Will Make the Playoffs
Jul 19, 2006 | 1:31PM | report this

I recently read a post saying that the Broncos have no chance to make the playoffs because of their difficult schedule.  Well, I disagree, and here is their entire schedule and how I believe each game will shake out.  And yes, I am probably biased since I live here in Denver, but I feel I am being fairly impartial.

Week 1-@ Rams-????-Not sure about the rams team this year, on the road, could be a tough opener.  I would probably give the nod to Denver but not sure so will leave at the ???? status

Week2-home vs. Cheifs-Broncos Win-We typically beat KC at home, no reason to change that now.

Week 3- @ Patriots- ????-same reasoning as week 1, but I would probably give the nod to New England, unfortunately on this one.

Week 4-Home vs Ravens-Broncos Win-Broncos have traditionally faired well against the ravens, at home at least.  if this game were in Baltimore, it would be a "L" but since we are at home, we will wrap this one up.

Week 5-Home vs. Raiders-Broncos Win-Raiders are in a down year, as they were last year.  We win this one at home.

Week 6- @ Browns- Broncos Win-If we can't beat the Browns, then we have issues.

Week 7- Home vs. Colts-????-Colts are a strong team, but how will they be minus James?  Plus this is a home game, were it at the RCA dome, I would give the Colts the hands down victory, but in Denver, we will have to see.  Possibly some snow on the ground as well.

Week 8- @Steelers-Broncos Loss-Probably will drop this game, tough to beat the Super Bowl champ on the road.

Week 9- @ Raiders- Broncos Win, Raiders in down year, Aaron Brooks.

Week 10- home vs Chargers- Broncos Win- Chargers are going to be starting a new QB in Rivers, he won't come out on track.  Worst thing this franchise did was letting Brees go.

Week 11-@ Chiefs-Broncos Loss-Although it's not December, the broncos rarely win in KC.

Week 12-Home vs. Seahawks-????-this should be an interesting game. Not sure which way the coin will flip.

Week 13- @ Chargers-Broncos Win-See previous comments on Chargers

Week 14- @ Cardinals- Broncos Win- While it appears the cardinals are improving, they will not be hitting on all cylinders this season, maybe next year, but not this year.

Week 15- Home vs Bengals-????-not sure how this one will go.

Week 16- Home vs. 49er's-Broncos Win-Alex Smith, must I say more as to why the broncos will win this one?

So, I have 9 guaranteed victories, 5 ???? games, and 2 losses.  Therefore if the Broncos win 2 of the 5 ???? swing games, which is highly possible, then they make the playoffs with an 11-5 record.  See? Piece of Cake.

Disclaimer:  All predictions assume Jake Plummer doesn't thow any left handed passes.

KC will own both games! I hope and pray :). that is only if they play defense this year.

The Chefs have "improved" their defense every year supposedly, yet the continue to be the laughing stock of the league...Time will tell. Did I mention that I hate the Chefs? I mean Chiefs?

love your post. at worst I see them 8-8. I say they go 11-5. winning one of these tough games.
at pats, colts, at chiefs, seahawks, or bengals. I'd probably take the bengals.

Tough division, tough sched, but they are a pretty good team, and will probably earn a birth.

I smell a coach on the hotseat in Denver. I do hope the Broncos have a 10-plus win season, however.

Hot seat Dovine? Shanahan is about as safe as any coach can possibly be. The owner, the best in sports, pat Bowlen has absolute confidence in SHannny and he has a so called "contract for life". He's gotta be one of the longest tenured coaches in the game.

Ram, I remember his butt being on the hotseat in the past when everything appeared copasetic.

Shanahan always seems to tie his career to the performance or non-performance of a young quarterback.

FYI: There is no longer such a thing as coaching security in the NFL.

I do wish the Broncos well. I love there recent history of finding running backs.

I will bet you a nice cold beer (or soda if you're not a drinker) that Shanahan is never fired. He may resign because he gets tired of it here, but he will never be fired.

I'm thinking the Broncos will put together a fine season. This is of course before considering all injuries or other occurances that happen over the year. From the start of the season with everyone healthy I can see the Broncos putting together the 11-5 season you predicted. Good Post.

I spent all last season convincing doubters that Denver was a force in the AFC, starting in the exhibition season. By the time everyone saw the light they choked in the championship game.

This season I still favor them in the AFC West and it really isn't close. Oakland has to have everything go absolutely perfect just to get over 8-8. Kansas City will miss Saunders (OC) and even if LJ seemed to rule the world at the end of last year his O-line is fading. Plus, find a damn WR for God's sake. San Diego with Rivers? Uh, yeah. Growing pains will hurt them.

11 sounds good to me, I can agree with that.

Shanahan will never be fired? I want some of that bet. But as for this season, don't be surprised if the Broncs are in the Super Bowl . . .

Ram Pride, I've no doubt that The Broncos won't be good. Coming off last year there should be marked improvement. However one has to see whether or not Plummer will be his usual self or be more assured in the position at quarterback. He had the momentary lapses in concentration that cost the team dearly in the playoffs.
If he's not able to perform to a high level of consistency then expect Shanahan to introduce us to the Cutler era.

Ram- I know isn't it amazing how they say the Chiefs defense improves each year! Then to find out it was worse than the previous year!...lmao! How can you do that? I think it is the definition of insanity to be quite honest...lol.

I agree they will make the playoffs, because they are the best in their division, I feel like they have as many questions as the Stellers or any team.

ricko-no problem, you can be included in the bet. Mean dovine wanted Corona, what would you like? Should I win, which I will, I will take a Yingling from Philly. I live in Denver, and only get to drink this fine beer while out east.

Tdub, Norcal-Thanks for stopping by, your comments are appreciated. And Norcal, you are correct, they did choke in that afc championship game fairly badly.

Tophizzat-I would say they got a little better...a great defense, there 2nd cornerback, darrent williams was hurt the 2nd half of the season and he is back full force. Also, they acquired Javon Walker, who I predict will have a breakout year after all that went on last year.

LSU-Thanks for stopping by again...i enjoyed your interesting story on that ref yesterday.

DatStar-Thanks for stopping in...maybe if you are good, your wife will give you your football saturdays back.

RamPride-
Week 1- Denver
Week 2- I agree with you that Denver will win. We are pretty good about wining at home.
Week 3- Did you see what happened last season and how the Pats were put to shame. I give Denver this one hands down.
Week 4- I think the Ravens might take this one. I dont know why but I think Mike Anderson might do something big.
Week 5- Do the Broncos even have to show up for this game. I mean come on now. This game would be like Denver playing my sons little leauge football team. Of course when my son is old enough to start next year.
Week 6- This is a nother game that we can use as a bye week.
Week 7- Denver has this one. It happens this way. They come to Denver and we make them look silly, and when we go there they make us look silly.
Week 8- I hope that with the Bus gone and Ben trying to stay pretty that maybe we might have a chance in hell to win. Or we can maybe pay them back for how silly they made us look. So this is a toss up.
Week 9- Denver will win. I wish we played there first and then have them in Denver and hope that is snows to throw snowballs at them again.
Week 10- Denver may win this one. No Drew = No Win for the Chargers.
Week 11- Man going to play on the Chiefs home turf is like being sucked in to the Bramuda Triangle I dont think we will win this one.
Week 12- All I can say is win or lose this is going to be a good game.
Week 13- Denver has another win.
Week 14- I have this feeling that Jake is going to choke this one up.

Damn I got cut off. Any way.
Week 15- This will be a good one to see. Just for Denvers sake though I hope they win.
Week 16- I think Denver will win this one.

As for the bet. Mike isnt going anywhere. The only way he will leave is when he retires. Rumor has it every year that Mike is going to college football and he is still in Denver. So that right there should show you he isnt going anywhere. So I would like a nice cold Bud Light please. :0)

Ram, the only problem I have with our bet is "never" is an infinitely long time.

Accordingly, that means we may be 80 years old before we collect...

I think the difference maker for the Broncos this season will be Javon Walker. If he regains his pre-injury explosiveness and has a big year they will be headed for success. If he is re-injured or has a subpar year they will not improve on last season's results.

Say what you want about T.O. but I think if he would have been acquired he could have been the weapon that propelled them to the Super Bowl.

Sorry Ram, I know you probably hate T.O. as much as anybody but I think he will be a "model citizen" for Dallas and he would have excelled under Shannahan.

Budweiser, here. I would love to see Plummer win the big one. I had a front row seat (figuratively) to watch him at ASU. He was one of the best college quarterbacks I've ever seen. As for his time with the Cardinals, no QB has had much success here. Check these two out, for example-Chris Chandler was here. Buddy Ryan let him go and he soon thereafter takes Atl. to the Super Bowl. Steve Beuerlein was here-Ryan didn't like him either. He took the Panthers to the NFC title game a couple years later. I could go on, but you get the point. I always thought Plummer got a bad rap. He did, after all, lead the Cards to their ONE playoff appearance in the last bajillion years and beat the hated Cowboys in the playoff game. The Cards then lost several key players from that team and Jake had nothing to work with. I'd say this year might be his last chance, though.

Broncogirl-Thanks for the Backup on the Shanahan Bet.

Mean Dovine-Why don't we put a 10 year cap on the bet? You think Shanny will be around for another 10 years? (fired not resign)

Hoffman-i agree with your assessment on Walker. And yes, I hate TO witha passion because he represents everything that is wrong with sports, but would have been willing to overlook that to win another super bowl. And I think TO will be good in dallas this year also. next year though we will see.

Ricko-Your right in college and even in AZ in the pros, Plummer seemed to play like he was a kid in the playground. To me, it seems as though he has lost that "just go out there and have fun" gunslingin type of mentality...He needs to take more running opportunities like he used to.

I don't understand how the Broncos and Nuggets can commit millions of dollars to players who are coming off serious injuries (Nene and Jevon) and have yet to fully recover?

Must be this mile high altitude.

Ram Certainly with acquisition of Walker on the offensive side of the ball and the upgrade of the secondary, then everything should be well for the Broncos. Shanahan has instilled into the team a will to win. Whether or not thy follow through we'll just have to wait and see. I certainly like their chances though of making the playoffs.

i hope the best for the broncos i have been a long time fan for them...i just love the running game they have established for well over a decade now..but the thing that i like the most is that i have heard people saying that the running is guaranteed in denver, that isnt true; they just have really great huslters to get things going so its more of a downhill run...good post though...i think they could win 10 this upcoming year

thanks for the validation top hat. Hopefully Walker returns to form, if that happens, watch out! It will be great and then Lelie will have no leverage whatsoever.

thanks for stopping by Bully23, the runnning game is awesome here and the reason is because Shanny doesnt believe in the 350 lb o lineman, we have the lightest line in the game and they are agile and can block

I LOOK FOR THE bRONCOS TO BE A SOLID CONTENDER THIS SEASON, PROBABLY GOING AS FAR AS THE SECOND ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS BEFORE FALLING DUE TO THE PLAGUE OF A LEFT-HANDED PASS BY PLUMMER.

Of course the Broncos don't have a chance. The ESPN "experts" already made pre-pre season predictions for the Patriots and Panthers to be in the Super Bowl. So every other team might as well give up now.

The Broncos are an example of a well-rounded team, with a good foundation. I don't expect they will be a trendy pick by the experts, but they have a good chance to get back to the playoffs and make some noise. They will do what they have always done. Rely on their offensive line for a balanced attack, and continue to play solid defense.

Nice way to break down the season...

Shooter- THose experts are talking out of there butts again. Remember what happend last season and how they were all wrong and I was going to take over and start running the show and taking Suzy's job. I should become an expert. They dont know what they are talking about. The Pats in the Super Bowl. Thats funny. They barley made it to the playoffs only to be embarrassed by Denver.

If anyone is a debate for the playoffs that made it last year, it would be the Jacksonville Jagfrauds, not Denver. Sure they have a tough schedule, but it won't make a difference if they play the way they did last season. Only adjustment will be where they stand in the AFC standings. I doubt they will be 2nd. 3rd or 4th, but winning the division sounds more appropriate.
