Jeff Gordon will be 37 years old in early August and he is the top dog with 81 victories and 4 Championships.
Will Jeff hang on doing this to the age of 50 ? Probably not, doesnt have to. Surely he will pass Darrell Waltrip, Cale Yarbrough and Bobby Aliison in all time wins, getting past David Pearsons mark of 105 will not will not be easy.
Of course Pearson, Petty and those guys drove in an era with seasons having 40, 50 plus races in a season to pad their totals.
Gordon has finished over 40 percent of his races in the top 5 and 2/3rds in the top ten which is comparable to Richard Petty, actually nearly 50 percent of Petty's starts resulted in top 5 finishes.
Jeff took the mantle from Dale Earnhardt and brought in the current era which we see now. This ultra comptetitive series is living up to it's name averaging 10 or more different winners for many years. Other racing sanctions envy the this kind of competition with so many different winners in a year.
Gordon's first race was Richard Petty's last at Atlanta in November of 1992. Four different drivers had a shot at the title that day with Alan Kulwicki taking the crown in a thrilling event to end the season.
Tragically in 1993 Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison were lost, we will never know what these two would have done.
Now it was Jeff's time to make his mark and few have been where he has in winning 4 titles, the first Brickyard race, Daytona and many other special moments.
Jeff Gordon has always been a gentleman and rarely loses his cool on the track or in front of the camera's. He represents Nascar racing at the highest level in a very classy way. Jeff knows where he came from and we know that he is on top of the mountain deservedly so.
If Alan and Davey were still here they would have picked Jeff's pockets just a little bit.
RL...Pearson didn't need 40, 50 plus races a season to pad his stats. He's only started 54 more races than Gordon, winning 24 more than Gordon. Gordon finishes in the top 5 over 40%. Pearson was top 5 over 52%. Pearson's winning percentage is over 18%. Gordon, 15.5%. If you want to compare Gordon's stats to the best, compare him to David Pearson.
With the competition becoming better and better each year, Gordon's chances of reaching Pearson's 105 wins appears unlikely. He'll still be very competitive for another 5-6 years. He would have to average 5 wins a year for the next 5 years to pass Pearson's mark. He may still end up with triple digit wins before his career is over.
I see Gordon racing for another 5-6 years, or until his daughter starts school. Once she starts school, I imagine he'd want to be there for her first day rather than some test session out west. And I think once he retires, he's DONE. I don't see him racing part-time, but I could be wrong.
Whoever succeeds Gordon in the #24 car will have some HUGE shoes to fill. (Landon Cassill, perhaps?)
The Underbird driving Alan from wisconsin was a man of men. He was the last owner driver to win the cup. He did what couldn't be done. The sept race in Atlanta was the greatest ever. It is sad today to see the famous #28 sponsor less. That car has great history. Davey and Bobby at Taladega 1-2 father son...
And Yes Jeff is great. My fav. From the time I met him in 88 at a sprintcar race in indiana...
Thanks for the memory.
I'll say Jeff gets 10 more wins in the next 3+ years and retires, Too many good drivers in good equipment now. He is not able to drive loose race cars like he used to. Struggles in traffic.
RL.....Any time I see a favorable blog on Jeff, I am always pleased. Those who have chosen to down play his importance in Nascar, are so blinded by their own bias to ever admit he was a shot in the arm to the sport. He brought with him a "NEW" fan base, and incredible talent. His ability to speak clearly and not end a sentence in a preposition was an annoyance to the then mainly southern crowd.
The excessive abuse, and the erroneous taunts of his sexuality have only been met with him not needing the cheers from the populace to win races.
