The New Kings ....... there is only one King
May 15, 2008 | 5:38PM | report this

Of course youth springs eternal untill you hit the wall real hard. When that happens to a driver he loses a tenth on the track.

This has not happened to Kyle Bush yet and god forbid. These guys make so much bank that with any success after 5 or 10 years they do not have to do it. This is not Old School, it is Money School, I dont blame them.

Recently FOX Sports put the "New Kings" article on their site as well they should because it is all about youth but to be sure there is only one King and we know who he is.

These new guys have it pretty good with Lear Jets and Turbo Props with fully complimented motor homes waiting for them at the track. The boys are good and show it every week.

Richard Petty's wife, Linda used to make lunch from the back of a station wagon years ago, bet those sandwiches were pretty good.

It is a good gig if you can get it. It is more than driving a race car and will always be about people. The great ones do not come along very often, that is why they are great. It is about the person and who they really are.

Jeff Gordon came on the scene and the feeding frenzy started. Now Gordon is the elder statemen rightfully so as he will be the next addition of the Great Ones.

This is a tall mountain to climb and when somone get's to the top Richard Petty will be waiting. The best drivers are quite and say little,  being humble with victory and gracious in defeat.

These young men know and learn from experience as we see them mature as people. The great ones also know something that we strive for in our lives.

Richard Petty is the King of Nascar and always will be. After years of eating dirt and ashpalt he still gave himself to us.

In 1975 I was able to get close to Richard at Beltsville Speedway in Maryland. He was there for a promotional event with a grueling 500 mile event coming up at Dover Downs. I pulled on his shirt sleve wanting an autograph, Richard tugged on my shirt with a smile and signed. Do not have that autograh now but the memory and his smile is pricless.

The new boys and the old belong to us as we are blessed to have them. When they fire em up it is beyond description as we look foward to the ultimate match.

and there is only one King

there was only Babe Ruth. And always will be. Still, there was Roger Maris and then Hank Aaron. Records are made to be broken.

Long live the King.

As a teenager I was privileged to get the real
king's autogragh in Canada where he was appearing
in a pre ASA road race with Bobby Allison, it was
an honor then in the early 70s and is still so
today as a 50 something fan

RL, another good read. Thanks! I remember meeting him also. He has always seemed to have a love for, respect for, and time for his fans and fans of other drivers.
