A Phillies fan's rant
Oct 12, 2008 | 11:02PM | report this
Wow!  The Phillies lost Game 3 to the Dodgers.  Big surprise.  Jamie Moyer for the second straight playoff start had a bad outing.  So what?  All of a sudden all the Phillies haters came out in force.  Major League Baseball wants a Dodgers-Red Sox World Series.  No one can deny that.  Anyone trying to obviously hasn't watched any of the 2008 Postseason.  But there are a few things I think I need to get off my chest:

1.  Maybe Brett Myers tried to hit Manny.  Maybe he didn't.  We'll never really know for sure.  But Manny the Great called out his teammates saying they need to stick up for him and what happens?  Hiroki Kuroda throws at Shane Victorino's head.  Retaliation?  Fine!  But not the head.  Shane even said you wanna hit me aim for my back or my ribs.  But then the national broadcasters pointed out anytime a pitch got inside by a Phillies pitcher implying that the Phillies were a team of beanball throwing thugs.  The Phillies hit 57 batters this season.  The Dodgers hit 48.  Brett Myers didn't even hit Manny and Russell Martin took one off the leg in Game 3 prompting Kuroda's attempt to take off Shane's head.  Is it so hard for Joe Buck to stay impartial?

2.  Please, when talking about Brett Myers, stop using the domestic violence reference.  It happened and it was terrible that he did it, but cut the guy some slack.  How would you like someone to bring up the worst thing you ever did everytime they talk about you.

3.  Unrelated to the Phillies... Stop bringing up the "Philly fans booed Santa" incident.  Yes it helped give Philly fans our reputation, but again that happened in 1968.  Let it go.  Other fans are just mad they don't have something that they did that will be remembered forever.

4.  Mitch Williams is one of the BEST baseball analysts in the game today.  He doesn't care about players feelings and openly criticizes them when they screw up.

Sorry if anything typed offends or angers anyone but I needed to say it.  Phillies in 6!  Good Luck beating Cole in Game5!

Wanted...
Mar 12, 2008 | 12:33PM | report this

Wanted - Full Time Heimlich Maneuver Specialist that likes hockey.

This is the want ad the Flyers need to place after their most recent choke job in Toronto on Tuesday night.  The Flyers were up 3-0  shortly after the start of the 3rd period.  They then managed to allow the Leafs to tie up the game with 3:41 remaining in the game.  Then came the icing on the cake so to speak.  The Flyers, with 56 seconds remaining before they could attempt to win via shootout (haha, anyone who has seen the Flyers in a shootout this year knows why that's funny) allowed Pavel Kubina to score the game winner.

With the Flyers currently in 8th place for the playoffs, every point matters.  The Flyers, by choking, allowed losses by the Devils and Bruins to go relatively unpunished.  Yes the Flyers still get a point, but a win would have tied them for 7th place with the Bruins and brought them within 6 points of New Jersey.

The Flyers, who had so much promise at the beginning of the year, are once again looking like a team ending with a first round exit from the playoffs.  Yes they have been hit with the injury bug (Mike Richards, Joffrey Lupul and Simon Gagne) but that isn't the only reason for this late season slide.

So please, Flyers management, get the word out.  I'm sure there are plenty of people who know how to stop the choking.  The question is, can you find one in time?

My Top 5 Phillies moments that I was alive for...
Mar 11, 2008 | 10:57AM | report this

Hey everyone, I was just sitting around thinking about how I can't wait for Opening Day and I was thinking about my top 5 favorite Phillies moments.  Note: These are MY personal favorite moments, if you want to share yours go right ahead, they don't even have to be about the Phillies just your favorite team (no Red Sox stuff though...J/K).

I'll start from #5.

5.  Phillies - Pirates June 8th, 1989 -  The Pirates put up 10 runs in the 1st inning, prompting Pirates broadcaster Jim Rooker to say "If the Pirates lose this game, I'm walking back to Pittsburgh.  The Phillies rallied to win the game 15-11 with the help of 2 Von Hayes home runs and 2 Steve Jeltz home runs.  Rooker walked from Philly to Pittsburgh after the season to raise money for charity.

4.  Ryan Howard hits a home run into the 3rd deck at Citizens Bank Park - June 20th, 2006, Ryan Howard crush a Mike Mussina Pitch into the 3rd deck just above the Auto-Trader sign in right field.  Ryan would go on to add another homer and a triple in a 7 RBI effort in which the Phillies lost to the Yankees.  It was Yankees 9 - Ryan Howard 7.

3.  Mike Schmidt's 500th Home Run - I was 5 sitting in my aunt's living room after Sunday dinner watching the Phillies-Pirates game.  Mike Schmidt came up in the top of the 9th with the Phils trailing by 1.  Schmidt connected for his 500th home run and Harry Kalas called it beautifuly.  To see the joy on Schmidt's face after he hit it and did his little celebration up the line is something I will never forget.

2.  Phillies clinch the NL East in 2007 - I was at the game on Sept 30th.  Along with a sellout crowd cheering on the Phillies as well as the Florida Marlins on the out of town scoreboard.  The towels were waiving, the people were screaming.  It was amazing.  Greatest game I've ever seen live.

1.  Phillies win the NLCS in 1993 - I was 11 at the time and this was the greatest thing to happen in sports to me at that time.  My favorite team in my favorite sport made it to the championship game.  I was driving home from my sister's softball game listening to the radio broadcast when they won.  It couldn't have been any better unless they had won, but then there was that whole Joe Carter thing.

Ok Philly, let's not get ahead of ourselves!
Mar 09, 2008 | 10:38AM | report this

As a Philly sports fan for most of my life (ok there were a few years when I was a confused teenager and didn't know any better) I have always come to one realization, Philly will not win a championship in the near future.  Yes, they've had their close calls, but they always seem to come up short.

So, in light of recent events, the Eagles will not win the Super Bowl this year.  Asante Samuel will be good, but he cannot win it on his own.  Without a top wideout they Eagles have no chance, and even with one I just don't see it.

Next, the Phillies will not win the World Series.  As baseball is my favorite sport and the Phillies are the team I've loved all of my life, there is no way they will win with the current roster/rotation they are going to trot out there everyday.  (Side note, J-Roll, SHUT UP!  You got lucky last year that the Mets choked.)

Flyers fans...no.  That's all I have to say.

Ok, I'm prepared.  Blast me for not being a true Philly fan.  I love Philly sports!  I have all my life.  But I'm also realistic.

ABOUT ME

Pyro412
I am a pretty open minded sports fan. I do have my dislikes, but mostly I try to see everything for what it is. I love baseball (Phillies - J-Roll, Shut you darn mouth already) and hockey (Go Flyers). I like football but for the wrong reasons (Fantasy) and I tolerate the NBA (Just doesn't interest me), Nascar is cool (Go Tony), I even like MLS (Go DC United). I am currently on my quest to see all 30 MLB teams. Just 1 to go (Kansas City). Then I can start my quest to see all the teams in their home stadiums. I'm currently at 8, I know I have a lot of work to do, but I'm only 26.
