What do the Red Wings have against Manny Legacy?
Jul 07, 2006 | 6:39PM | report this
Recently I have been reading a lot about former Detroit starter Manny Legace and how he can’t seem to find a new home. Some writers such as James Mirtle have suggested that he probably will end up in Florida or St.louis. My question here is why would Ken Holland sign a aging goalie in Belfour, whom I might add is obviously on his last leg, over a much younger Legace. This makes no sense to me other than a PR move to lay the blame on someone for a playoff gone wrong last spring. Don’t get me wrong here, I think that Ed Belfour is one of the all-time great goalies in the game but at 41 he is simply getting to old for the kind of rigors a full NHL season has. He has been in up and down mode for the last four to six years losing his job in Dallas to Marty Turco and then having the same thing happen in Toronto a couple of years later. Manny Legace may not be a spectacular goaltender but he is nothing if not extremely consistent yet he continues to get passed over by teams without the foresight to give this guy a real chance. Manny may not have been great in the playoffs last year but the Detroit Red Wings have to look at the team as a whole and not blame one guy. I’m not seeing pavel Datsyuk being raked over the coals for having a poor showing.

I’m telling you now that Kenny Holland is making a huge mistake by signing Ed Belfour over Legace. Did Holland forget that Manny set an NHL record for wins in a month last season or that he had more than thirty wins and less than ten losses. Only time will tell what the better move here was as Eddy might show me up and have a spectacular and injury free season, but I doubt it.

Thanks for listening to this rant as I had to get this out.

i couldn't agree more, this makes absolutely no sense. they are completely pulling the rug out from under him, much like they left him out to dry during the first round. a team averaging almost four goals per game can't point at the goalie when they don't put up numbers in the playoffs. manny did his part, and yet is catching all the fallout. he's earned better, and deserves better.

Well thank God the Belfore deal fell through. Great goalie in his time Belfore, but he is well at the end of his career I think. As far as Manny, what the heck are the wings doing??? Yeah ok, he stunk in the playoffs, but so did the WHOLE team with the exception of a few. How can you throw away those regular season stats? He has always been exceptional as far as I am concerned. As for the rest of the leauge not signing him? I think there is somthing else going on here. Consperacy thery??? MAYBE. Did he say somthing that pissed off his teammates?? I dunno but with his record he should have been gobbled up as soon as the wings threw him away. I don't know maybe someone else has some ideas??

Yeah, the Wings have a history of throwing goalies under the bus. I'm still sad that Cujo never got the chance here he deserved, being discarded for a goalie who in the year he was rehired clearly wanted to design and sell clothes rather than win another championship.

Yeah we all know that Ken Holland has made some BONEHEAD moves, and this seems to be just another one on those choices that makes no sense at all. His track record leaves much to be desired when it comes to goalies. Legacy has been a Loyal, Hard working member of the Red Wings and deserves better treatment from the whole organization than what he has gotten his record speaks for itself. Whatever the issue Holland has with Legacy is, it should be able to be worked out, i believe there is more here than meets the eye. I'm quite sure we will never know the whole story, tho I wish they would reconsider their choice in this matter. At any rate whatever team signs Manny will have a Great Team Player and an Excellent Goalie. ALL I can say is hmmmm maybe its time for a NEW GM !!!

Well Today Clinched it for me Ken Holland has lost his mind completely resigning Hasek ??? the guy has no loyalty and only cares about the money, he has made that obvious when he even refused to dress for a game to support his team after being asked to do so by the coach and gm of ottawa this past season. and what about the CRONIC Groin injury? think this is all fixed? well to let Legacy go and resign hasek after all the past issues there were with him is completely the worst possible decision Holland could have made. and i HOPE that Mr. Illich will take note of this when Hasek is sitting out for his (recouring) injuries
and puts the blame where it belongs for a change.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm also a little baffled by the hasek signing. Either this is going to work out well or its going to be a disaster. I feel like i repeat this every year when hasek signs with a team and it always turns into that disaster. The wings should be a bit of a soap opera next season.

Hey all,
Now don't get me wrong, I liked Hasek when he was in his prime. He did a good job for us. But after the way he left here and thr #### with Cujo, I really never expected him to be back.Hopefuly he can put all that #### behind him and stay healthy. Also I have been seeing on a lot of other discussion boards slamming Legacy, screw that, you guys are right, how can you blame him alone when they averaged 4 goals a game during the reg season and struggled to score 1 or 2 in the playoffs??? He admitted he struggled, and to me that wan very professional of him. What he DIDN'T do is blame his team mates, who equally sucked. The whole team is to blame for that early departure, not just Manny. I liked him and will continue to like him. Anyways just my 2 cents. Have a great day. Whos gonna wear the C this year?? Lidstrom??
