WHERE IT ALL BEGAN (Part IV)..JULES RIMET THIRD FIFA PRESIDENT
Dec 30, 2006 | 8:10PM | report this

JulJules Rimetes Rimet was president of the French Football Federation from 1919 to 1945 and third FIFA head from 1921 to 1954. He was born at Theuley-les Lavoncourt, France. He presided over two successful Olympic competitions despite the absence of England and Scotland, but the success of the competitions, combined with the rising profile of the game, allowed FIFA to seriously consider, for the first time, staging its own regular World Championship.

Talks on the matter began in 1928, and the first World Cup took place in Uruguay in 1930 and was won by the home nation. I will write a piece exclusively on the 1930 FIFA WORLD CUP SOCCER. Stay put!!Despite the reluctance of participation of European nations due to the travel time required and the ongoing economic depression, the tournament was considered a SUCCESS and plans were laid for the next World Cup in 1934 in ITALY. Excluding a break for World War II, the World Cup has been held every four years.

The current World Cup Champion is Italy, who won the most recent edition ( the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany) defeating France in a penalty shootout. Soccer fans will never forget the head-chest butt  scene of Zidane (the French midfielder) vs. Materazzi (the Italy National team defender and current Inter of Milan defender). The next FIFA World Cup is slated to be played in South Africa four years from now (2010).

FIFA World Cup trof?Under Monsieur Rimet's tenure, two major achievements 1) the first Football World Cup in 1930 (above) and 2) the Jules Rimet Trophy that was named in his honor( on the right side).FIFA World Cup trof? For some reasons, it was reported that Jules Rimet has a fondness for kippers. He died at Suresness in France. He was 83 years old. He was succeeded by RODOLPHE SEELDRAYERS, the fourth FIFA President which will be my next post.

There you have it..Enjoy!!

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN (Part III)...DANIEL BURLEY WOOLFALL SECOND FIFA PRESIDENT
Dec 29, 2006 | 10:49AM | report this

Pursuing the WHERE IT ALL BEGAN serie about the Beautiful game founding fathers, I think it is time to give interested readers a glimpse of how the second FIFA president tenure looks like. His name is Daniel Burley Wollfall, born June 15, 1852 in England Blackburn, president of FIFA from 1906 to 1918..the year.. he died on October 24, 1918 at the age of 66.. to be precise..

Woolfall was the pupil at Blackburn Grammar school and later joined the Income Tax office, situated in Richmond Terrace. By 1881 he was living with his mother ELIZA, was assistant clerk of the Commissioner of Taxes. His town was well known for the football team Blackburn Rovers on which I will write a piece on their early years.

Daniel Burley WoolfallAfter replacing Robert Guerin as the second FIFA president, Mr Woolfall has staged the football competition for the 1908 Olympics in London despite the presence of professional footballers contrary to the founding FIFA principles. Remember Olympic competitions were and still reserved for the most part, to amateur athletes.

1908 OlympicsEdwards II opens the 1908 London Olympic games.

Under his leadership membership of FIFA has expanded beyond Europe with the application of South Africa in 1999, Argentina and Chile in 1912 and the United States in 1913.

FIFA floundered, however, during World War I with many players sent off to war and the possibility of travel for international fixtures severely limited. POst-war, following the death of Woolfall, the organization fell into the hands of Dutchman Carl Hirschmann.

It was saved from extinction, but at the cost of the withdrawal of the Home Nations, who cited an unwillingness to participate in international competitions with their recent World War I enemies.

That was Woolfall's legacy on the beautiful game story.

Daniel Burley Woolfall

Again, thanks for your sustained attention,

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN (PART II)...ROBERT GUERIN FIRST FIFA PRESIDENT
Dec 29, 2006 | 9:36AM | report this

Robert Guerin was born June 28, 1876 in France, was the President of FIFA ( International Federation of Association Football) from 1904-1906. He was the first president of FIFA, and died in 1952.

He worked as a journalist at LE MATIN newspaper and was secretary of the USFSA's football committee. He was also manager of the French National Football Team between 1904 and 1906.

Under what circumstances Mr Guerin became FIFA President?? The need for a single body to oversee the worldwide game became apparent at the beginning of the 20th century with the increasing popularity of international fixtures. The Football Association had chaired many discussions on setting up an international body, but was perceived as making NO PROGRESS.

It fell to seven other European countries to band together to form this association. FIFA was founded in PARIS on May 21, 1904-----the French name and acronym persist to this day, even outside French-speaking countries. Robert Guerin was its first president under whom FIFA presided over its first international competition in 1906, but this met with little approval or success. This, in combination with economic factors, led to the swift replacement of GUERIN with Daniel Burley Woolfall from England, the second FIFA President that will be the topic of my next post.

This was how the trophy looked like during Guerin's tenure.

Thank you for your undivided attention,

Papipoul
