It's just really funny to me that since the retirement of Sid Lukman, the most popular Bears quarterback is always the guy holding the clipboard. I mean, really. Stop it people. Seriously. If you guys really want to chalk the 2008 season as a loss and start the rebuilding process, AND waste the potentially great defense they have, then by all means, start Caleb Hanie. I want you guys to look Tommie Harris, Brian Urlacher, Mike Brown, and Lance Briggs in the eyes and tell them they won't be competing for a Super Bowl this year because you think Caleb Hanie is the next Tony Romo.
The numbers don't lie, people. No rookie starting quarterback has EVER reached the Super Bowl. EVER. Since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970, only two rookie starting quarterbacks in NFL history have even won a single playoff game (Shaun King in 1999 & Ben Roethlisberger in 2004). Do you really want to waste one more year of our dominant defense grooming a quarterback? I think not.
Kyle Orton went 11-5 as a rookie starter in 2005 and people couldn't wait to pull the plug on him as soon as Grossman was healthy. How many rookies win 11 games? Not too many.
Rex Grossman is 19-11 as a starter and led the Bears to the Super Bowl in HIS FIRST FULL SEASON AS A STARTER. Not too many people do that either. Contrary to popular belief (haters are everywhere), the Bears' quarterback situation is not as bad as the "experts" say it is.
The Bears have two WINNERS on their roster, and last year's horrible season is more a product of injuries on defense that it was anything else. I mean they basically signed Toeina and Jimmy Kennedy off the street to play for them last season because of injuries. I'm not sure of the exact number, but I believe the Bears defense lost about 60 starts due to injuries. They went from a top 5 defense in 2006 to the 28th ranked defense in 2007. That has nothing to do with "Good Rex, Bad Rex" or "Checkdown Charlie" (Orton).
I guess the Redskins should start Colt Brennan over Jason Campbell based on one preseason game too, huh? Ridiculous!
People need to stop drinking the "Caleb Hanie is the next Tony Romo" Kool-Aid, because the last time I checked, Dallas has a very good defense, and they still haven't won a playoff game since 1995, and that is including the two years Romo has started.
I'd rather my quarterback throw a pick in the Super Bowl than botch a snap and not get there at all. Rex will win the qb battle and the Bears defense will dominate and give them a chance to go far in the playoffs.
Enough with the Caleb Hanie for President campaign, already!!
Sorry, there still isn't a quarterback in Chicago. Grossman fumbles, Orton throws picks, neither one has the weapons they need to be successful. I call both good backups in this league, but neither is a great starter, shich the bears need if they are gonna go deep in the palyoffs. My best friend is a bears fan, and his opinion is of the same mind, NONE of the bears uarterbacks in the last 10 years are the answer to their problems. Starting a rookie will just ruin one more quarterback in that system. you should have ppicked up Dante Culpepper or Byron Leftwich.
netsteeler, you respond by making the statement, "but neither is a great starter, shich the bears need if they are gonna go deep in the palyoffs". when rex has already gone as deep as you go in the playoffs, truth is Rex has started one season, one in which is equal to his rookie season being injuried on his rookie campaign. Your friend is a bears fan so that makes you to experts.....No, just a couple guys that don't know there football. we don't need a great qb only a healthy defense, number 1 specail teams in all football, and a decent QB. I tired of sheep being instilled with wisedom from the media, think for yourself!
wow! why the hate? you have to expect opinions you do not like if you are gonna post your thread, otherwise keep your own UNINFORMED OPINIONS to yourself!
OH BTW, rex gross man did NOT get as far as BIG BEN did! ben actually got to HOLD teh Lombardi Trophy!
its all good, you will see, mediocre play cant hide behind a great defense forever!
I rather have people give a new Qb a CHANCE instead of being a delusional #### and thinking we are going to the superbowl with crappy Rex and Orton. I'd say put Hanie in. We have already see what Rex and Orton can do. They have proven themselves already. Sure no QB has ever made it to the Superbowl, but whos to say he won't be good. You can't say he isnt the next Tony Romo when Hanie has hardly played at all.
@chitown
No we DO need a good QB. Our defense can't do everything. In fact you know why the Bears lost the Superbowl? Because of the QB. There was a sports editor that said it best before that game started, " Rex needs to have a good game". "He cant afford to make his typical rex mistakes(you know the fundamental mistakes he always does)."
Hate to break it to ya, but a baaad QB can really destroy everything your defense has done. Until Chicago hires a COMPETENT QB, we will never win the Superbowl.

Netsteeler,
you sound like a record going around repeating the same shiet you hear from the media, now as far as ininformed opinions go, your suppling the mother load, further more Ben did touch his superbowl trophy (congrats) but not his first season playing as a starter, he made a playof appearence, while Rex went to the superbowl his first full season, and if you want to throw stats, take a look at Favre's and compare those to rex favres 1st yr starting 19 tds 24 ints, you need to develop a QB.
Did you just make a comparison on fact 3 with out taking factors in to account, you are a ####.....
the panthers did not have steve smith as there #1 wr while moose was playing there, with the emergence of berrian and the type of TE oriented play chicago runs, no moose wasn't going to get an oppurtunity to catch as many, which is why he was crying, that and the simple fact he got cut by the bears.
blkmagick9
what to even say to you your a bandwagon groupie, who has about as much football knowledge as t.u.r.d
And you sir sound as ignorant as your post! first of all, i do not read the sports page, as they write almost as bad as you, second i do not watch sports stations as they are all self inportant snobs, not unlike yourself. if I sound as if I am repeating others, then you must be the miority, as we were smart enought to inform our own opinion from teh facts. NOT make lame axcuses for poor play like a blind fool, anyone you know come to mind?
You need to stop posting your opinion if you can not be eloquent in your response. (that means act like an adult you child mided loof!)
AND if the CHEATRIOTS hadn't been inside the Steelers playbook in the championship game, BEN WOULD have won a superbowl in his first year! as it was, he took them to the AFC championship. THAT is an acomplishment that gives all rookie QB's something to shoot for. but since the bears are yesterdays news, the subject is moot iddnit? (btw moot means shut up and move on)
blkmagick9, you obviously weren't watching the same Super Bowl than I was if you want to put the entire blame for the Bears losing it on Rex Grossman. Manning went 25/38 with 1 TD and 1 INT. Grossman went 20/28 with 1 TD and 2 INTS. That's 65% and 71% respectively. Rex threw one more interception than Manning, and Manning won the MVP of that game. You can't blame Grossman for losing the game on ONE bad play.
I know Chicago Bears fans love to put the defense on a pedestal and make excuses for them because in most fans' eyes, they can do no wrong, but if you look at that Super Bowl, the defense let the team down and that is why they lost that game, not Grossman.
The Colts ran the ball down the Bears' throats for an impressive 191 yards. The Bears couldn't stop the Colts' running game and they also couldn't stop Peyton Manning and the passing game. They kept getting in position and were able to kick three field goals in addition to their touchdowns. In a season where the Bears' defense was as dominant as they've ever been, it was in the one game that mattered most that they didn't get the job done. Sounds kinda like the Patriots of last year. NO ONE expected the Bears to win the Super Bowl based on their offense, but most people expected the Bears D to dominate, and they didn't.
The Bears' defense was as soft as a 10 year old's #### in the Super Bowl, and if you want to join the bandwagon of blaming the Bears' qb for everything that goes wrong, then go ahead, but know that you have no basis for a logical argument and admit you are just being a sheep.
The two quarterbacks on the Bears roster have a combined record of 31-17, which is 64%, which would correlate to an average of 10 wins, which will always get you into the playoffs and sometimes win the division. The fact is that the Bears quarterbacks have a better win percentage than most of the quarterbacks in the league. The only quartebacks with a better percentage than Bears qbs (min. 10 starts) are: Brady, Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Romo, Mcnabb, and Favre. That's it. At least four of those guys are guaranteed Hall of Famers, so let Grossman or Orton get at least a second full season to start and see what they can do.
Alex Smith, Jason Campbell, Matt Leinart, & Jay Cutler get the benefit of the doubt on their teams, and all of them have lost more games than they've won, and none of them have even won a playoff game. There are many worse QBs in the NFL than Grossman and Orton, it's just the fashionable and sexy thing to bash them right now. You people are sheep! Baaaaaaaaaa!
I do agree with all your points about Super bowl 41 except that last interception DID break the backs of the offense. the defense had their backs broke in the first quarter.
the reason all the teams are still behind their young Qb's re:Alex Smith, Jason Campbell, Matt Leinart, & Jay Cutler , is that they are 2 or three years into their careers. rex and kyle are 5 arent they? you will see the same bashing of leinart this year if he doesnt perform. he has WAY morer weapons that the bears have, and the bears seem do do more with les, while the cardinals do less with more! how can they have the best reciever combo and NOT make the playoffs.
Alos, green bay will not be as tought as last year, minnasota sukks, so its between the bears and detroit this year. I thought detroit might surprise this year, someone will.
netsteeler, this will be my last post with you in the cross-hairs.
I talk about football, you talk about what-ifs and avoid the topic, while reverting to name calling and bickering. Are your panties to tight, or maybe you got some sand in your ####...I don't know/care. As far as making my point I do so with authority, knowledge, and the ability to think for myself (another trait that is missing from your gene pool, a shallow pool I'd imagine).
Furthermore you want to talk to me of eloquence ha, I laugh at your ineloquent responses and miss spelled words, along with your fragmented thoughts you my misinformed wanna be are a joke. Stick to topics you can relate to like playing in the sandbox and getting your lunch money taken, ####.
chitownbeatdown : you mean "last post with me in your butthairs"
Who the #### put the sand in YOUR ####? I may not have the knowlege you THINK you have, BUT AT LEAST THEY AR MY OWN THOUGHTS!
I might as well not even reply to lame posts as this, as namecalling is what YOU GIRLYMRN started, I just got sucked into it,
hey losers, want my address? I DO NOT HIDE BEHIND A KEYBOOARD!
so unless you want to apologize first, I will follow suite

Last time I checked, I stated that BOTH Grossman AND Orton were capable quarterbacks, and I just stated MY preference. Now that Orton is the Bears' starter, I'm 100% behind him, and after the way he played last night, it isn't to hard to do that. As of right now, Grossman is one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league. Who is the Steeler's backup? That's what I thought.
God obliq, do you even READ what you post? the Steelers have dixon, who was #1 in heisman voting until his injury, Batch was the backup until the collarbone, and now its leftbich, who is 5 times what rex and kyle are TOGETHER! but wait about, oh, TWO games, and rex will be the loser, er starter again, then kyle, then rex.
