There are so many things to look forward to in Houston during the month of May.
There is the Smackoff, Cinco de Mayo, and of course my birthday. But the city of Houston has been sitting idly by for half a year waiting to see if the Astros would have another shot at re-signing one William Roger Clemens. Well Uncle Drayton and Timmy Pupu have come through in a big way. The current offer is rumored to be $18 million for one season. Roger will probably still get his own set of rules, but will he still get to take off until June? If he does, he may in fact have the sweetest deal in all of baseball. Pitch 2/3 the season and bring home a boat load of cash. The Astros have gone from first in their division to 3rd, in a week. They are missing more than stability in thei rbullpen, they are missing the leadership that Roger brings to the table. They are missing their former hard #### 1st baseman who would get in their faces, and shoulder the load of the blame for a loss. Biggio too may have lost his flair for controlling the clubhouse and the team. The Astros need Clemens way more than he will ever need him. The key is not to let him know it.
How to make him bite
Roger and his agents have been in this situation many times before, and this would be the third time that this arose with the Astros, but this time it's different. Roger wanted his mother to watch him become inducted into the Hall of Fame, but she passed away last season, and Roger even pitched a gem after she did. She was a true baseball fan, and she predicted the Astros would play the White Sox on her deathbed, but the good guys didn't win. Drayton opened the checkbook, it is up to Timmy Pupu to complete the sale. Timmy Pupu comes from a long line of Houston area General Managers with bad haircuts. He fits the mold of a Houston General Manager, and Houston GMs not named Casserly make the big acquisitions. Everyone remembers when Hunsicker donned his Trump like haircut, and brought it Randy Johnson and Carlos Beltran. We know how CD hid behind his silver locks and abnormally thick eyeglasses, and finally moved Steve, not to the 2, but to Orlando for T-Mac. Timmy Pupu has the power of the do. So Timmy Pupu don't be hasty in these negotiations, it won't be a quick sale. Don't walk away from the table, and don't get angry, this is your season, your legacy of being one of the elite GMs in Houston history is at stake. You don't start gripping until the last week of the month, then if he's still not signing, tell Uncle Drayton we need another million. He'll come, he was so close last season, albeit they got swept, but the furthest any Astros team has gone. Remember this Timmy Pupu, it is his game, but both of you have to win.
Guys get older and start getting injured easier. Last year Roger's back and hamstring were ailing him through the playoffs. I would want Roger to go to the Astros too, but I can't help but worry that they would put another 18 into a player that can't finish the season. It would be deja vu all over again.
