Who's next in line for Packers' power position?
Jun 05, 2007 | 1:22PM | report this

The beauty of the Green Bay Packers is that the franchise has survived with community ownership and that those in the football operations can concentrate on building a solid product without a lot of top-heaving interference.

Bob Harlan, the Packers’ chairman, was going to retire and turn over his position to John Jones, but that isn’t going to happen now and Jones has been placed on paid leave.

Now, Harlan’s job may not be as powerful as say Ted Phillips’ position with the Chicago Bears or John Shaw’s with the St. Louis Rams, but he does have tremendous influence over the hiring of Green Bay’s general manager and head coach. The best thing Harlan ever did was hire Ron Wolf as general manager, who then hired Mike Holmgren. The Packers have been living off that legacy for years now, primarily because Brett Favre hasn’t retired.

Yes, part of Harlan’s job is ceremonial and public-relations conscious. But that doesn’t have to be true of his successor. The executive board would be wise to give Harlan’s replacement a bit more power and influence. If the league opts out of the collective bargaining agreement in 2008, a franchise like Green Bay could suffer competitively against the big-city markets. That’s why Harlan’s renovation of Lambeau Field was so financially critical to the franchise.

Everyone is talking about Tennessee GM Mike Reinfeldt returning to Green Bay, but that is highly unlikely. Vice President Andrew Brandt is probably the best in-house choice. But you can bet that Harlan would have pushed Brandt by now if that was a real possibility.

Harlan and the Packers should consider these experienced club executives: Bryan Wiedmeier, president of the Miami Dolphins; Rob Brzezinski, vice president of football operations for the Minnesota Vikings; and Jay Zygmunt, president of football operations for  the Rams. This would be a great job for former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi if he wanted to come out of retirement.

Some believe this position is one of the best in the NFL. But the downside is that you have to live and work in Green Bay.

Restoring some sanity

The long-term result of Commissioner Roger Goodell’s strong stance against the NFL’s most embarrassing players (Chicago’s Tank Johnson received an eight-game suspension on Monday, following the punishment of Chris Henry and Pacman Jones, et al) will be the opportunity to restore some sanity to the locker room while making other league employees realize that Goodell means business and that even lesser violations might warrant a one- or two-game suspension.

There is nothing wrong with putting a little fear into every player. Hopefully, it will make them all think twice before doing something stupid. There is too much at stake to simply toss away a million dollar career and the overall good name of the league.

There is no question that the majority of players support Goodell’s no-nonsense stance because the rap sheet element on teams erodes the good name of the vast majority of players and club employees.

Meanwhile, the league waits to see whether Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is charged in a dog fighting scandal in Virginia. Those close to Vick believe he has nothing to worry about and that any potential courtroom drama will be postponed until 2008.

The Falcons have shown no interest in signing another veteran quarterback (they have Joey Harrington as a backup), believing Vick will be their starter this season. For example, when Trent Green was available the Falcons decided against bidding with the Chiefs for his services.

Carr fitting in

There is no question that Jake Delhomme is Carolina’s starting quarterback, but David Carr, the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, has looked good in workouts for the Panthers. Carr chose the Panthers over Seattle. The Raiders kept calling, too, but they couldn’t promise Carr that they wouldn’t select a quarterback (JaMarcus Russell) with the first overall pick.

“Everybody likes their team in June,” Carolina GM Marty Hurney said. “Carr has looked good. But let’s wait until we’re into training camp for a couple of weeks before we say how good we can be.”

Remember, the Panthers had one of the NFL’s best drafts in April, plus there’s the positive news of linebacker Dan Morgan’s return. Morgan (concussions) is one of the league’s very best when healthy.

When you think about Carr, you have to wonder why Miami didn’t make a run at him, considering his arm strength. The Dolphins have finally acquired Trent Green, but there are many in Kansas City who believe Green’s career is at the end of the line.

Just read your blog concerning the current situation going on in Green Bay and I'd have to say that there is much more downside to wasting my time reading it then the supposed "downside" living and working in Green Bay.

Greenbay is actually an awesome city! It's clean, people are friendly, and they always support their team. And this is coming from a Vikings fan

Take it from a Packer fan that has lived in Dallas, TX for 30 years, there is NO downside to living in Green Bay. Green Bay has down to earth people who don't place all of their value and self worth in material things (unlike Dallas), four beautiful seasons that offer something for everyone (unlike Dallas where it's 90-100 degrees 7 months out of the year), a community that speaks English (unlike Dallas which is an extension of Mexico), low crime rates, (unlike Dallas which has had the highest crime rate in the U.S. for 3 consecutive years), and best of all, you have THE GREEN BAY PACKERS!!! (unlike Dallas that has the Dallas Convicts and Jerry Jones). I would choose to live in Green Bay over Dallas any day of the week! Sure wish I could have raised my kids there instead of in this pathetic city. The reason it's so hot in Texas is because it's so much closer to HELL.

How Dare You! Green Bay is a wonderful place to live. Have you ever even been here outside of staying at a hotel near Lambeau Field? What don't you like exactly? Is it our great schools, low cost of living, or maybe the extremely low crime rate? This is horribly offensive. I demand someone print a retraction on the Foxsports NFL home page. I will be contacting my local Fox affiliate.

Pack woman, I have to agree with you that Dallas may not be one of the best places to live in the U.S., but your comments sound a bit racist to me. Maybe you should move to Green Bay and be Happy!!! But really, I think there may be spanish speaking people there too, you ought to try England or something. So tell me, why are you still married to Dallas if you're so miserable?

Yes, I am a Cowboys fan, but if I had to choose another team to root for it would definitely be Green Bay. Brett Favre will go down as one of the top three best quartebacks ever in my mind, behind Elway and Montana!!

Bear Down buddy....obviously you have never been to green bay...obviously you have never been to a green bay packers game. the energy that you can feel when you sit in lambeau field is unimaginable. the commitment that these fans have to this team is also unimaginable. green bay is the smallest city with a professional football team and theyre still able to pull out a record over .500 on a consistent basis. the team is built on the team chemistry and the reinforcement of the fans. do me a favor and visit green bay and id like to here what is exactly wrong with green bay.

Most who live and work in Green Bay wouldn't want to be anywhere else. This includes transplants from cities like NY, LA and, like myself, Chicago.

isrami77, I certainly didn't mean to sound "racist" and I'm sorry it came across that way. I'm sure there are many spanish speaking people in Green Bay, but they probably speak English too. I am not racist and I'm not opposed to legal immigration. In Texas the schools have ESL (English as a second language) classes that cater to spanish speaking kids. Teachers who speak spanish earn more than English speaking teachers. How is that fair? I don't blame the immigrants, I blame our society and government for allowing it. And by the way, I am actively looking for work in Wisconsin so my family can leave Texas.

So much for intelligent journalism. It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth (or to get out your pen) and remove all doubt. Czar, you just removed all doubt.

It is freezing in Green Bay. To damn hot in Dallas. Both your teams are weak. You should all move to San Diego and get ready to cheer for the next big power in football. Ps. And we have lots of Mexicans including me.

The next big Power in Football?? When do you stop becoming the next and actually be the now? LT smashes single season TD rushing record, one of the best defenses in the leauge, Solid QB Outstanding offense! Merriman and Barry Bonds have the same trainer!! ( I couldnt help myself) and yet you let a disconnected New England team come in and Put the "lights out" and Im supposed to sit back and watch that?? Remember that every team competes for the Lombardi Trophy every year

I live in Indiana-80 miles south of Chicago. Each year I and 7 friends got to Green Bay for the Bears-Packers game. The Bear fans in our group never want to attend a Packers-Bears game in Chicago.Sometimes we have to sit in the parking lot at Lambeau Field and watch the game on TV. GO PACK!!!

I live in San Diego now. I lived in Green Bay for 25 years. Green Bay has an excellent night life and all kinds of outdoor sporting opportunities. The food is great and the beer always flows in generosity. I'm dating a lovely mexican woman and she is great, but she doesn't know much about football. If I were to move again though it would have to be London. Where I would get a satellite dish and watch every Packer game. The weather there is cold but not nearly as cold as the slam by John Czarnecki on my hometown.

Its a good thing you are a writer and not a TV personality Czar. You'd make one stupid comment like you did above and never be able to take your foot out of your mouth. I think your point has been proved wrong by all of the people from out of the state of Wisconsin that have praised the Wisconsin lifestyle. Thanks to all have noticed this and said so. Especially to Scott (even a Vikings fan notices the hospitality of Wisconsin). I'm just hoping the Packer fans don't have to watch Adrian Peterson run all over us for many years to come. That not the Randy Moss trade was the worst thing for the Pack this offseason. Not trading up to get Peterson.

I've been to GreenBay, and its the worst BLEEP hole connected to the NFL! The NFL should be embarrassed to even have a team in that city STILL! The fans are complete A-HOLES! I saw so so many fans of the opposing team get thrown out of that BLEEP stadium, just because they weren't Packers fans and Pack fans started fights with'em! I was there with a friend simply to watch a game in the Famous Lambeau Field, THE FROZEN TUNDRA! I was embarrassed to even be a football fan the way things went on there! Hey L.A. you're city deserves a third team before Green BLEEP deserves to continue to have one! And for those BLEEP fans who wanna talk smack about the last game of the season, who owns the division now!? I'm pretty sure that was a meaningless game to the BEARS and they shut the Pack out in the first game. When you actually make it to the playoffs again then start talkin!!! GO BEARS!!!!

Whats a bears fan doing in Green Bay anyway? Watch the game on TV you BLEEP! Craphole please that doesnt offend anyone in Green bay beacuase they know its not true, who cares about your made up story of fans ejected from the stadium, the division is down and out and yes the last 2 years the pack has stunk it up but dont talk about playoffs because we been going consistently since the 90's! The BLEEP BLEEP Bears lets face it that was the first year you punks were even effective since the superbowl shuffle! Your a loser! Were you even alive when the Bears won that superbowl? Just remember that the trophy your punk BLEEP bears got smashed for is the Lombardi trophy! We have the best win percentage all time in football and more rings and playoff appearances then you BLEEP, but dont worry ya'll got us beat in ex convicts and disgruntled players Hope Devin Hester doesnt hurt a knee or something i would hate to see Chicago with the first overall pick in 08! later loser GO PACK

Anyone notice how its rowdy, crazy Bears fans who are the ones talking all the trash? I think they may be a little disgruntled that Green Bay has owned them minus the last couple years. Get over it darkknight. The only reason the Bears made it to the Super Bowl last year is the NFC is very weak right now. And yes that includes Green Bay. The AFC championship was in all actuallity the Super Bowl. Too bad the Bears aren't anything in the playoffs when it matters. Oh yeah and darkknight LA will never get Green Bay's team. Why? Because the city owns the team. Not some rich BLEEP who'll move their team as soons as stupid fans like yourself turn on the team and jump on the next bandwagon. Packers 4 life.

I was going to defend Green Bay and the whole state of Wisconsin but several beat me to it so I won't. However, the comment of placing #4 behind Elway and Marino. Now that WAS STUPID! Can you say 3 time REPEAT MVP and when he retires he will be the holder of EVERY QB record that has stats?

David Carr + offensive line help will equal SOLID but not spectacular results. Good character guy ..could have thrown lame offensive coordinators, defensive minded head coaches and less than all star linemen UNDER THE BUS... but he didn't. You heard it here folks
