At Tuesday morning’s AFC coaches’ breakfast at the lush Arizona Biltmore, it was standing room only around 31-year-old Lane Kiffin’s table. The Raiders’ fifth different head coach since 2001 handled the nationwide reporters pretty well. He never got flustered, and even admitted that he snuck into the Raiders’ Alameda facility for his final interview with owner Al Davis “through a back door, so no one would see me. Kind of like the CIA.”
Kiffin said some interesting things. He believes that disgruntled Randy Moss will be a Raider this season and that he is building a good relationship with Jerry Porter, who spent last season in Art Shell’s doghouse. Kiffin said he was even coaching Porter on the practice field last week.
On Moss, Kiffin said that after watching film of how Moss played, or lack of it, last season, he saw “a very talented player who was not playing at the standard I would expect of a player of that stature. He looked to me like he was just a very frustrated player,” Kiffin said.
Sometimes, the youngest NFL head coach said, those are symptoms of a player who is simply highly competitive and totally frustrated by having two passes thrown his way in the course o####ame. Moss was frustrated because he knew he couldn’t help the Raiders win under those circumstances.
It was impossible to get an accurate read on whether Kiffin prefers LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell over Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson in the upcoming draft. He compared Russell to a quarterback in a video game. “He can make every throw, just like in the game,” Kiffin said. “But some of those throws, the ones 70 yards across the field, you may make two of them in the course of a season.”
Kiffin admitted that Russell is a quiet leader, very similar to Titans quarterback Vince Young. You can tell, he said, that Russell’s teammates simply gravitate to him and want to be around him. “I saw the same things prior to when we played Texas in the Rose Bowl,” said Kiffin, who used to be USC’s offensive coordinator. “You could sense how much the Texas players wanted to perform and play for Young.”
The intriguing aspect to Oakland owning the first choice in April’s college draft is that Johnson may be the best player in the draft.
“He seems perfect for the most part,” Kiffin said. “When a player is considered for the top spot in the draft, you want to find negatives about the guy. You know all the scouts like him and are saying great things about him. But with Johnson, you can’t find a bad thing about him. His character, his make-up, his commitment to working out, all his off-season work, and well, there are no holes in his game.”
Kiffin compared Johnson a little to former Heisman winner Reggie Bush. They are the kind of players, that if a teammate runs a better 40-yard time, they are ready to race that guy, challenge him.
Who knows if Kiffin can win in Oakland? Nobody has since Bill Callahan took the Raiders to the Super Bowl, where they were torched by former Raiders coach Jon Gruden and Tampa Bay in the big game. He said his father, veteran Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, told him what guarantees to seek from Davis, and that he was satisfied. He also admitted that some coaches advised him against taking the Raiders’ job.
“But my process happened so quickly, there wasn’t much time to really talk to a lot of people about what they thought I should do,” he said.
Who’s No. 1?
Kiffin said it was too early in the draft process to be saying who should be the first pick, but many league observers believe it will hard for Al Davis to pass on Calvin Johnson. “He’s the kind of can’t-miss player that Al has always coveted,” said a rival club president who knows Davis and also is drafting in the top five. “It’s going to be difficult for Al to take a quarterback when there are no flaws in Johnson. At 6-foot-5, Johnson is not only going to be bigger than all the cornerbacks he goes against, but faster than almost every one of them. He could be impossible to cover.”
“His vertical jump was 43 inches,” said Kiffin, who knows that Johnson will attack the football and use his 235 pounds to muscle the ball away from defenders.
Green and Miami
It may take some time, but the Chiefs believe that Miami will eventually make a trade to acquire veteran Kansas City quarterback Trent Green. Granted, Green may have only a year or two left on his body, but he’s a quarterback who knows Cam Cameron’s offensive inside out and the word out of Florida is that the new head coach doesn’t believe Daunte Culpepper will ever be of any use to the Dolphins.
“We keep hearing that Cam doesn’t like Culpepper,” said a rival GM. “You have to think that Cam will make a move because he has a solid defense and he has a chance to win now with Green.”
Such a trade could put Culpepper on the street. You can bet that the Raiders would have an interest in Culpepper. Oakland definitely has an interest in former Houston quarterback David Carr. “I think he can still play,” Kiffin said. “I was at Fresno State when (Carr) put me into early retirement as a quarterback there. I can remember Coach Tedford telling me I should start thinking about becoming an assistant coach.”
Drew goes on the offense
Drew Rosenhaus took a beating on his handling of Terrell Owens in Philadelphia. We all remember the press conference outside of T.O.’s house. “Next question” was the common reply from Rosenhaus that day.
Well, Rosenhaus was back in bravado action Monday at the NFL League Meeting, ushering Bears linebacker Lance Briggs among the media and the coaches and GMs in the hotel hallways here. He and Briggs are doing their best to free themselves from Chicago and are being very aggressive about it. You can surmise that Rosenhaus caught the Bears’ front office off-guard with a potential trade to the Washington Redskins for the sixth overall draft choice for his client.
Earlier in the day, Bears GM Jerry Angelo was prepared to offer Briggs a guarantee that the club wouldn’t place the franchise tag on him next year if he would simply agree to play for $7.2 million this season, the franchise number, and start attending the off-season workouts and mini-camps. But Rosenhaus didn’t want anything to do with such an offer.
In the past, teams like Seattle placed the franchise tag on offensive tackler Walter Jones for three straight years before working out a long-term contract. Last season, Buffalo guaranteed cornerback Nate Clements that they wouldn’t place the franchise tag on him this year and he received $20 million in guaranteed money earlier this month from the San Francisco 49ers.
The Redskins are obviously gearing up to win this season. The trade would be a good one for Chicago, considering Briggs was a third-round pick and he definitely doesn’t sound a bit interested in sticking around. The only downside to grabbing the sixth overall choice in the draft is that Chicago doesn’t like being that high in the round because they would have to pay out a $10 million signing bonus to a rookie. If the Bears do make the trade with Washington, they most likely would trade down from the sixth spot.
Monte Kiffin is the new coach of the Raiders!
This is great news.
Defense will matter and players will be held accountable off the field.
What? It's Lane Kiffin! Who da heck is he?
David Carr or Daunte Culpepper should come to the Raiders. Then we can have Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, and Jerry Porter and Ronald Curry. Forget JaMarcus Russell. I dont want some guy who throws one completion a game thats 70 yard downfield. 20 completions each going for 10 yards would be much better. If the Raiders have a HORRIBLE season again, Al Davis should retire.
dan, you said a lot in a short spill. I've always had my opinions on "Big Al". Personally, I've been saying that the Raiders won't win the SB until Al dies. I never thought of retire and I bet he hasn't either. Here's the thing, me and Al are similar in many ways. I'm a 'nobody' and I would be a great candidate for the coaching job except I don't have experience in leading people. The Kiffster guy sounds like he has a handle on things. I would take any second round pick for Moss (deal him). I was amazed at Porter last year but I think he knew more than everyone else. Carr? I don't know. The Culpeppster? Not sure? CJ21? Yes!
No team will be willing to give up anything higher than a 4th round and a conditional in next year's draft for Moss. He now has the reputation of not playing hard unless he feels like it. I've been a member of the Raider Nation for years and I'm stumped. I'm not sure the team will turn around anytime soon. But I can always hope. As long as the Whiners and the Broncos have a bad year, I'll be happy.
Dan!!!!!!!!!!! have u completely lost ur mind???..JR dont just throw 70 yd passes..See thats the problem..Yall must not have seem him play..He is THE BEST prospect in the Draft now...and i really dont think he would fit in with Oakland all because they dont have a recieving corp...and i truly believe that if LSU played Oakland..LSU would kill them...thats how sad Oakland football is...
Let me guess Louisiana, you must be a Dodge person huh? That alone tells me that you are dillusional regarding things that you like. The Raiders have the best receiving corps outside of the Colts and Bengals. If they had Manning or Palmer, there wouldn't even be a conversation! Moss, Porter, Curry, and a running back who is a year removed from having a great receiving season. No question, there good. Just need a quarterback to keep them happy. BTW anyone who says a college team would even compete with a pro team just let me know where his intelligence level is, in the basement.
Guys...Should'nt we be thinking about someone who can play at this level??? It's not all about "what have you done for me lately" ie: LSU beating Notre Dame. It should be about "what can you do for me now". Most people have forgotten what a player Quinn is. Everyone has a hard-on for Russell but the truth is Quinn is a better player. Russell as a Raider equals huge target on his back...and with our O-line every D-lineman and linebacker will have somthing to prove by gunning after him. I think it's a waste to pick him 1st overall...he'll be out before you know it and then what??? Booty???
Guys, If I know AL Davis he will trade this pick to the Browns and get a 2nd round pick along the 3rd pick in the Draft and select Johnson with the 3rd overall pick in the Draft!!! Then trade 2, Second round picks and get BRADY QUINN! I know it's not going to happen but after all the losing us Raider Fans can DREAM!!!
Hey Headbatch! I drive a Dodge and the raiders still suck! other than the my Lions!!! nobody has ever been worse than the Raiders have been the last few seasons. at least they have won in your lifetime and I am damn near fifty.
Ah, what a difference a year makes. Well, that has been the recent NFL trend atleast. If history is any indicator look for the bottom dwellers to do much better and the Super Bowl hopefuls to slide to the near bottom. So, with that said, "Just Win Baby" should do better. But how could they not? They either need the QB from the draft or through free agency. Dante who? The Raiders haven't done well with cast-aways as of late so I say start fresh and get the next Stabler from the draft. Trade Randy for some defense or a 1st day pick.
lol....nahh...I Drive a Chevy...Not no sorry #### ford or Dodge....and why all the negativity about JR??....i gaurantee if he starts...he will have great performances...he knows when to throw and when to run..for a big guy..hes pretty quick....Now diss JR all u want..It doesnt Matter
Louisiana, the one problem I have with taking Russell is that he has had one great season. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe at the start of spring ball last year LSU had a QB controversy. Some at LSU wasn't sold on Russell. Nowhere in this thread have I seen anything about the QB the Raiders will get. Josh McGown (sp.)out of Detroit. Then will make CJ21 the 1st pick.

I'm wasn't dissing JR, but I've been a Raiders fan for a long, long time. Al Davis still knows great players. He does have a problem - Russell with an Elway-like arm, or the gifted Johnson. It may come down to agents. Just like last year, an agent can make or break where an athlete winds up. Al does not like rookies holding out. If he doesn't trade the pick, he may go with the one who will sign early, aka mario Williams over Bush.
I think that the raiders need to pick-up that quarterback Russell jus for the fact there is no one that has the potential to get the ball to his receiver. The west is has some of the toughest Defences in the league. All I have to say is GO RAIDERS!!!!!!

well for anyone who says the raiders will suck this year is crazy..as long as they get a good QB and bulk up that line. they will win there devision..mark my words write it down take a picture..if anybody knew anything about the raiders season they would know that they never had all of there stars on the field offensive wise for more then one game of the season.. now with the pick up rhodes and griffith along with jordan and even fargas. our receiving corps and running game will be tuff as long as we get the line squared away.We don't need johnson. if we pick up a veteran qb or russell..we can get a good wr with the 32nd pick..I mean we have the 1st pick of the 2nd round..not that many teams need wr's this year with there 1st pick.I don't know about that booty pick this week!!!!. with carr, green and even bledsoe still on the market he better pan out if they ever need him. If anyone paid attention they would realize the raiders had like 4 gms they gave up in the 4th alone with that sorry #### line. emagine where they will be when they square that away and get two good qb's. we got the defense to win a championship we just need a starting and second string qb along with a line to block for them and we will beat anyone in the NFL.
Lane Kiffin... Not Monte. Monte is Lane's dad. The first guy who posted here is apparantely void of reading capability. Either way; Kiffin, Spiffin, or Riffin... This is going to be a rebuilding year for the Raiders at best. They have a lot of talent at skill positions. However, they look like the Lions plus one. The challenge is obviously one of creating a winning attitude and delivering a winning team in one of the toughest divisions in the league. Developing winners is no easy task. Getting players to buy in to work and hardship when they feel like they are owed greatness is also no easy task. Best of luck to Kiffin and his staff!
Why not go after Carr in free agency and also draft Russel? You have a guy who could start instantly and another who could learn the system and the way the NFL works. If Carr plays well this year, you then have trade bait for next year, if he doesn't play well then you can put Russel in 1/2 way thru the year and have Carr backing him up. I don't think we need to draft another receiver. Work on building the offensive & defensive lines with the rest of the draft and then next year look for a big tight end in free agency and trade Moss after he has a good year. You could trade one of the backup QB's that we have now during this years draft and try to move up a few spots in the 3rd or 4th round. I think the new coach has a good plan getting the receivers attitudes better, but building a team means building good offensive & defensive lines. Take a look at how the Eagles build their team (from their lines) and they have been getting to the NFC Championship almost every year for the last 5 years. No great WR's on that team and they still win with a solid QB and a good line.
Hey Matt, it would be just like a Lions fan to drive a dodge. You guys are a little "off" in the head. Everyone wants to dog Al Davis and the silver and black but answer me this. How many teams have been to the Superbowl since the Raiders were in it? Not too many. Hell some teams have never been there! So, for the haters to run mouth about the Raiders and have never seen there team in the big dance need to shut up about it. Al is a genius and the NFL wouldn't be where it is without him. Afl commissioner, leading the way to the merger, aand having the best record overall than ANY team since the 60's to today. He knows his football thats for sure. Four years ago he had the oldest team in football and lost to the eventual champion three years in a row. You gotta rebuild sometime...You can't fault Al.
Well for all of Al Davis' genius talk there are some kinks in the the armor. He did go after Kerry Collins and hasn't had a real good 1st round pick since like Woodson. Who would have ever hired Art Shell again? Well, Al Davis. Art Shell great player perhaps the worst coach ever, statistically or otherwise.
I think that they do have the QB of the future already in the ranks. His name is Andrew Walter. He is a big strong armed QB that throws a beautiful ball with lots of zip. He is no track star, which is why they need to beef up the O-line and get their previous high picks to play up to their potential, CAN YOU HEAR ME ROBERT GALLERY??!! Take CJ, trade Moss, get some experience on the line like they have already done with Newberry, and last but not least start Walter and give him a chance to stand confidently in the pocket. Show me a QB with great completion percentage numbers from his back. All of you who are calling for Al's head don't understand that he is what makes the Raiders, for better or worse, give the man his due and let the man continue his reign as he sees fit. He knows more about football than the collective of this blog. And finally in closing **ck all Raider Haters.
Its easy to use hind sight and say that he screwed up when he went after Collins but truth be told, that same guy was a Superbowl quarterback that threw for over 4,000 yards for the giants with a very mediocre receiving staff. Who could have foreseen that he wouldn't do well with the guys he was goin to be throwing to in Oakland? Art Shell had a very respectable record with Oakland btw his first time around and lead them to the championship game as well. He lost control of his team when he hired Tom Walsh as the O.C is all. They shoulda went after Martz.
Very good point Tim. I mean how big is big enough? Walters 6'5 235 maybe? He has as big of an arm as any of those three qb's that came out last year that every one was in love with. He would have broken the record for sacks taken had he played every game. Nobody is going to thrive in that environment no matter how big and strong he is. Gallery needs to get off his #### as well. Lazy hippie bum needs to cut his greasy hair until he's a pro bowler.
That's why i said this: building a team means building good offensive & defensive lines. Take a look at how the Eagles build their team (from their lines) and they have been getting to the NFC Championship almost every year for the last 5 years. No great WR's on that team and they still win with a solid QB and a good line. Rounds 2 thru 7 in this years draft should be committed to the lines! Having the #1 pick means you should draft the best player in the draft or trade down to fill a need.
Attention all Raider fans. Al Davis should trade the pick to pick up more picks and sign David Carr. With the Raiders offensive line, wide recievers, and backs that would be a major improvement.Carr was a hero in California at the college level or have you all forgotten. He is much better than his stint in Houston shows.Be smart Al Davis trade the 1st pick.Pick some additional picks ,fill some defensive needs and sign David Carr.David you never stood a chance in Houston. GOD has a better plan for you.You will be missed in Houston. And not just for football. The community will miss all you have done here as well. You are good man of GOD.I will pray for you and your family.Keep the faith my Brother. Good luck where ever you end up playing

James- Sorry to tell you, the 49ers and Broncos will both make the playoffs this year. The Raiders will probably be, at best, in third place in their division.
Headbiatch- Sorry to tell you, but the way the Raiders have played the last four years (15-49) many college teams would beat them soundly. When Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart were still at USC, USC would have ripped them apart.
Now, on to draft speculation. Pick whatever quarterback or receiver you want, JR, Quinn, or Calvin Johnson, doesn't matter without a line to protect that QB. The Raiders could have Peyton Manning, Tom Brady or Carson Palmer, they would all suck on the Raiders because the Raiders have a line that might as well not be there because they let everybody through anyway. If we fans were to play defensive line against the Raiders, we could sack the QB, that's how bad the line is. And let's not compare receiving corps to the Colts, Bengals or anybody else. Moss is selfish, Porter is good but frustrated, Curry is good but would be no better than third on most other teams. Those who think Moss should stay are foolish. If the Raiders can't get anything for Moss, they should just cut him. He is worse locker-room poison than T.O. At least T.O. still puts up numbers. He lead all receivers in TDs last year with 13. Even with all those drops. And T.O. doesn't get on the radio every other week saying that he really doesn't want to be there anymore, they should trade me, blah, blah, blah.

T.O. talks a lot but he at least backs it up on the field. Moss talks a lot but then doesn't do anything to back it up... unless he feels like it, which is what, 2 or 3 times a season?
Bottom line, it doesn't matter if the Raiders take JR, Brady Quinn or Calvin Johnson. The QBs won't help add any wins without a line to protect them because they will be on their back 2 out of every 3 downs. And great WRs like Johnson don't help either when the quarterback is laying on his backside before the receiver has enough time to run his route. So the real focus should be on the line, not the QB or WR position. But Al Davis will not focus on the line with such a high pick, not after the walking disaster with a huge cap number that is Robert Gallery. Gallery was a terrible choice with the 2nd overall pick. But of course, passing up Matt Leinart for Michael Huff was dumb too. Leinart has more than enough arm to play for any team in the league. Cannon arms are great, but I prefer accuracy and talent anyday. How often do QBs chuck it 60 yards downfield these days? 4-5 times a season maybe? Huff is a great player... but Leinart will win a SuperBowl or two before he is done.
Oh yeah and in case anybody was wondering, I am a Raiders fan. I'm just realistic. Al Davis may have been a football genius in his prime. Now he is just an old man who foolishly clings to glory days long past. You can't just get super fast deep threats and throw bombs all day. It doesn't work anymore. He should step off and let the coaches and personnel staff do their jobs. And he should finally accept that in today's NFL, you have to rebuild. ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. You cannot just grab a few talented free agent vets at positions of need and win consistently. You might have a good season or two like that, but you won't be winning a playoff spot consistently for 5-6 years like you would if you rebuilt the team.
DEON, I've been a Raider fan for 30-plus years. You're dillusional if you think our Raqiders are going to win the division. What's the infatuation with Carr. He's average at best and is not a leader. Great players lift teams, Carr is not an answer. He's another Collins, at best. RakJeep - Shell the worst coach ever? You've got to be kinding or very, very young. White and Bugel left a lot to be desired. Shell did get Raiders to playoffs.
Headbiatch, Martz is a control freak who wants total control. Something no head coach should allow and something al Davis would never allow. He's a jerk and needs to stay in Detroit. johnny hogg - Carr may be a hero in Cali, but the rest of the country is not impressed. If houston hadn't picked him first, he would have slid down faster than Leinhart did. jedirayden, usc beat the Raiders? perhaps, but they must have been looking ahead to that game when Texas cleaned their clock. Besides, they pay their players nearly what the Raiders pay theirs. Huff was a great pick. The defense is young and strong. he plays an important role. I'll take a bet about Leinart winning one to two Super Bowls before he's done. Arizona may have one or two good seasons, but with Bidwell as the owner, the good players will leave for more money.

Moraiders- Just checking what Texas vs. USC game you watched. If you're talking about the National Championship game, it came down to what the last minute, two minutes tops? That's not cleaning anybodies clock. Cleaning somebody's clock is what USC did the year before to the Sooners. 52-10 or some such? And Huff is a great pick. But IF, and this is a big if, the Raiders had a solid O-line, Leinart is better than JR or Quinn any day. Leinart ran a pro-offense, not a pro-style offense (Quinn) and we know he doesn't throw the ball through the uprights from the 50 on his knees like JR can, but he is a better, more cerebral player than either of the top 2 guys in this draft. And maybe had Moss gotten a chance to play with someone good last year instead of Aaron Brooks, or Walter, he wouldn't want to go.
