After another disappointing first round post-season exit if I were New York Yankees Owner George M. Steinbrenner III, I would make some serious changes to this ballclub. In fact I would make a lot of changes to this roster and get back to square one. Though it seems odd a 94 win playoff team with a payroll in excess of around $200 million would need a drastic overhaul, but alas here we are and here are the changes that must be made:
(Moves to be made by The Boss)
First the General Manager Brian Cashman. While I continue to applaud Cashman's willingness and philosophy to develop young talent in the farm system and holding onto prized prospects instead of dumping them for the Eric Gagne's of the world, I wouldn't bring him back. Whether since 2001 you want to blame him or the Tampa contingent for moves like Jason Giambi, Kevin Brown, Steve Karsay, letting Andy Pettitte go etc. is your call. However since supposedly took back the reigns in 2005, he's responsible for Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, Kei Igawa, Tony Womack, Kyle Farnsworth, re-signing Mike Mussina and letting Bernie Williams go.
(OUT)
My new General Manager(s): Gene "Stick" Michael and Buck Showalter. These guys layed down the foundation for the turnaround of the Yankees and this most recent dynasty in changing the culture of the way things are done in the Bronx. Both are excellent talent evaluators, know how to run an organization, how to bring in quality people and hard nosed ballplayers and especially how to cultivate, scout and develop a farm system.
(IN)
What to do about the manager Joe Torre? There's two ways to look at this. 1.) Torre always wins and gets the Yankees to the playoffs, despite starting the year with two-fifths of the starting rotation comprised of Carl Pavano and Kei Igawa and followed by the many rookies that would come. Not to mention in the post-season they essentially had about two automatic reliable relievers in Mariano Rivera and Joba Chamberlain. In addition to having 45 year old Roger Clemens not able to pitch more than two innings and Mike Mussina pitching so poorly down the stretch he has to be relegated to long-man status, while Chien-Ming Wang had to get run out there on three days rest. That and Jason Giambi was a total $20 million waste just sitting there on the bench because he's all roided out. 2.) The Yankees have a lot of All-Stars, Hall of Fame guys and have spent hundreds upon millions of dollars to at least do something more than get bumped in the first round for the 3rd straight year.
(OUT)
My new Manager: Joe Girardi. Girardi is just a flat out winner everywhere he goes. As a player Girardi made the playoffs as a catcher with the Cubs, Rockies and Yankees. As a manager Girardi won with the Florida Marlins, with a payroll of $15 millon and a bunch of Double and Triple-A players not named Dontrelle Willis or Miguel Cabrera. Some have compared Girardi's managerial style and makeup to former Yankees skipper Buck Showalter. Girardi knows talent and how to motivate and get the best out of youner players and is a no nonsense type of guy. Which is a positive because he won't be attached to this roster, will be given a clean slate and there are a lot more youngsters on the way. Girardi also knows how to succeed in New York which is very imporant, he learned strategy from Don Zimmer and how to handle a clubhouse from Joe Torre and there are enough of his old teammates still around to back him up and support him, namely Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte. Girardi would be the logical fit to replace Torre, much in the way Ralph Houk replaced Casey Stengel.

The Thirdbaseman: Did A-Rod light it up in the playoffs this year? No. Was A-Rod the absolute reason the Yankees lost in the playoffs this year? Hell no! Honestly here's my take, if A-Rod wants to stay and sign an extension and end his career with the Yankees then bring him back. However if A-Rod wants to opt-out, get paid $40 million a year and ultimately take up one-third of the payroll they might just want to spend and use their resources elsewhere. A-Rod is very marketable for YES, the new Stadium, the All-Time HR chase and on and on. He's a good guy who seems more relaxed and more comfortable with the city embracing him and he seems to have taken on more of a leadership role in the clubhouse. Either way I don't think the Yankees can lose. If A-Rod is back, they have one of the All-Time greats in the lineup. If he's not, they probably have a solid guy like Mike Lowell holding down the hot corner, who has a great glove, came up with the Yankees, is mostly a doubles hitter and can hit for average and power and the Yankees have won with players like him at 3rd before, like the guy who stood in his way back in 1998, Scott Brosius. That and the Yankees can allocate more money towards pitching and or outfield help.
Speaking of the outfield, nobody is safe. It will be quite interesting to see if the Yankees try to perhaps package Melky Cabrera in a deal for Johan Santana. Or whether they keep Melky in center or move him to one of the corner spots given his arm and bring in a Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand who are excellent defensively and provide much more pop at the plate. Will Bobby Abreu's 2nd half resurgence and steady post-season be enough to retain his services or will the Yankees do a Gary Sheffield, pick up his option and trade him for some pitching help? Hideki Matsui rebounded well this season, but has been injury plagued the last couple of seasons. Though Matsui has been pretty solid as a Yankee and the organization likes the whole Japan marketing thing, the next GM or skipper might want to consider a different path and deal him for some pitching help before he potentially breaks down. Lastly Johnny Damon may have saved himself with his October heroics, that or he possibly showcased himself for another team should the Yankees look to deal him for some pitching. I say the Yankees have to at least bend off one of those guys for some pitching help and need some serious pop either for the outfield or DH spot.
Catcher: Obviously bringing back Jorge Posada is a no-brainer and retaining Jose Molina would be a wise decision as well.
1st base: Working out something between a platoon of Doug Mientkiewicz, Andy Phillips, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit should be just fine at the moment for the Yankees.
Up the middle the Yankees are more than set with Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano.
Finally the most important, the starting rotation. Assuming everyone comes back and they don't pull off a blockbuster for a Johan Santana type, here's what my starting rotation would be in no particular order. Andy Pettitte, Chien Ming Wang, Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy. That's right, no more Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Kei Igawa or Carl Pavano. Go with youth here and you heard me right, Joba starts!
In the bullpen Mariano Rivera must be brought back, even at his age, when it counts he's still better at 80% than most closers in this league at 100%. Plus who else are you going to sign Eric Gagne? Please. Kyle Farnsworth must be shown the door. They have to make some deals as I mentioned earlier to bring in some workhorses. They should probably bring back Luis Vizciano. And there should be a healthy competition between more young guys (if they're not traded) like Ross Ohlendorf, Humberto Sanchez, T.J. Beam, Darrell Rasner, Jose Veras and Chase Wright. Perhaps Mussina is retained as a long-man or a spot starter in the pen or if Girardi is hired as manager they bring in Jon Lieber for help as an innings eater. Another option might be to try and swing a deal for Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan.
Finally the deadweight must be cut. Some how some way the Yankees have to shed the bad karma and equally bad contracts of Carl Pavano, Kei Igawa, Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina and Kyle Farnsworth. A big reason the Yankees can't afford to give A-Rod the moon if he opts out is that these guys are taking up a huge chunk of the payroll without actually living up to those salaries or in some cases not contributing at all.
In summary the Yankees have an array of directions they can go. Continue to get younger and more fiscally responsible. Trade some of that youth or those big contracts for some "sure things," i.e. Johan Santana or Joe Nathan. Spread out their resources to create more depth on the roster. Or they could just go all out and spend $300 million.
I'm not expecting them nor do I want them to revert back to the 1980's style of doing things or even what happened after the 2001 season. With potentially more payroll flexibility and more leverage for the owner, this will be the biggest turnover since 1995 and 1997, both year's the Yankees made the playoffs as a Wild Card and got bumped in the ALDS. Oddly enough it may all turn out to be very cyclical for Joe Torre, who like Buck Showalter before him was a successful well like skipper by the fans who brought the team back from extinction to the playoffs only to lose and be let go. Hopefully these changes like those made in '95 and '97 bring about a new dynasty for these Yankees and hopefully they'll remember what those changes made at that time that were, when they're thinking about making them this time around.
As a long time Yankess fan i want to say that George Steinbrenner needs to go, not Joe Torre, Brian Cashman, the management staff or the players. When "The Boss" kept his nose out of the game the Yankees won three consecutive WS Titles with some mediocre players. When "The Boss" sticks his nose into everything the players don't respond. I think it's pretty clear where the problem lies. It's time for you Mr. Stienbrenner to depart and let this team achieve all that you have taken away. LEAVE GEORGE, WE THE FANS WON'T MISS YOU!!!!!!!
GS is the majority owner... Like Vince McMahon of the WWE he knows controversy sells tickets... If the yankees were truely committed to winning they would hire real coaches instead of the army of ex-managers...they would also scout proven, inexpensive talent and ditch the tired horses...Beltran, Delgado and B. Williams each wanted to be Yankees and were denied access.... instead players that are injury prone get multi-million dollar deals...I personally think the whole collapse every year since 2000 is not a fluke...baseball needs new champions to keep up the ratings...GS will make his money regardless... another theory is GS wants to force the minority sharerholders to sell... a 200 mil. payroll filled with pork?...there has to be an alternative reason to this drama since they are currently the only team in professional sports with this issue...
I agree with Mike that Joe G is the guy to manage a modern baseball team like the Yankees. He knows his stuff, no unecessary kindness, knows the right moment to get into the pitching's way, (guidry will be highly motivated), most of all... he's got a broad analytical mind ( see how he makes comments, but that's a waste of talent for him). He's a true field General and a true blue blooded Yankee too. So make the first necessary step Mr. G.S.
I don't understand why the Yankees are always so astonished that someone else other than themselves goes on to win the World Series every year. The look of disbelief from the dugout on that last game every year is priceless. Steinbrenner should know that just because you bring everyone over to the dark side...Luke, that you won't always rule the Galaxy. This is a fine example of speculation based on talent that goes awry, it has nothing to do with Torre and everything to do with the delusional Steinbrenner. The deserving team of elitists has been served. How's it feel, Moose?
This is the best analysis I have read about the yanks on this site. A job well done and I agree. Know if you can just come up with the 1.3 billion it will take to buy the team and make the changes.
I agree with everything you mentioned except for Buck. I think he was absolutely the reason the Yanks lost to Mariners by pitching mcdowell in game three against the big unit, he should have thrown the bum Kaminecki/? spelling, and kept the pitching advantage with Mcdowell in game four!!! so I never want to see him back in pin stripes. The rest of your plan sounds absolutely perfesct to me.
The plan sounds great,Tht Stick and Buck are Pros at finding talent and building great teams,as they both did in 94 and 95,Torre inherited this great team and drained the juice dry,He must go to his great big house in Hawai, and stay there with all the bucks George has given him,George You desreve a ws ring every year,You have given me the greatest years as a long tme Yankee fan,50 years and the best were with George, the biggest Yankee fan alive.and the best Boss ever,Go Yankees Forever.
first thing is donnie should get his chance to managed this team.second arod should not be blame for this loss ,if he was not a yankee team would have finish last or 3rd no doubt about it..players to stay.arod--jeter-cano-posada-melky- duncan-molina-abreau-what the yankees need is speed atop of lineup young players who want it more..pitching wang-joba-kennedy-petite-hughes-mo- viscaino-bruney
I'm a Red Sox fan so I'm glad to see the f'ing Yankees out of the playoffs. Joe Torre is a stand up guy and there's not a team that won't benefit from him. The only time that the F'ing Yankees did anything smart was when Lonesome George was suspended from Baseball.
JUST GET RID OF CASHMAN..THATS ALL,AND PICK-UP 1 BIG NAME PITCER,AND KEEP ANDY..THAT WITH THOSE YOUNG GREAT ARMS,YANKEES ARE ALL SET FOR NEXT YEAR..STOP BLAMING JOE...
If Steinbrenner had anything to say he should have kept his mouth shut until all was done. Cashman is the one who should go, he is the one who spent tons of money on worthless pitchers. Clemens, come on, he was a waste. From Torre to all the players, they did their best and it would have been nice if they could have had a decent pitching staff and focused on the games instead of Steinbrenner's stupid threats that won't solve anything. Joe Torre has been great for this Team and if he is still there next year, he will do it again.
Yankees fans consider any other MLB team besides the Yankees winning a World Series to be a gigantic, gigantic problem. Fact is the Yankees success is a major reason MLB is considered so boring by 90% of the American population. If the Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl ten years in a row, everybody would get incredibly bored and stop watching football.
wayyyy to HIGH expectations all year!!! YES the NY yankees are an instution with baseball!!! but george better quit trying to buy a world series!!!!!! it dosnt work!!! ask the LA lakers!!!! and you can fire all the managers in the world and have a revolving door of managers again... and why not george give it up have some else own the team??? why not your little scheme didnt work BIG MOUTH!!! trying get the team winning by your tantrum... yea i thought cleveland would jump all over that saying if they dont win joe is gone!!! back fired on ya!!!
in closing aint (baseball lingo) it funny how when a team is winning?? all hail the manager!!!! but if he is losing (middle finger extended) if i recall when the yankees won the last WS wow JT was honored like a GOD!!!! now get his #### out of town!!!!!!! hey if i saw didnt the yankees get to the playoffs???? what about the other teams... didnt go!!! but oops sorry you have to win it all or your #### is fryed!!!
I'm by no means a big Yankee fan, and I'm very impressed when a much smaller-salary, {more talented} team destroys their WS-chase, but there are some huge changes needed in NY. Joe Torre may be a classy guy, but class doesn't win championships. A-Rod may be setting the world on-fire with his bat {when having a hot-streak, he gets pretty damn cold for long periods also), but he's no champion, either. Steinbrenner should free up alot of cash, and get actual ball-players (not superstars) who are hungry for both wins and respect. These young guys will be more than ready to earn their pay in NY with solid hitting and defense. Joe Girardi is definitely the players' manager, and he could do wonders with a good squad of younger, talented kids. Give hime the shot! Someone escort Clemens to the Retirement Home and introduce Giambi to Marion Jones' attorneys.

There are some good ideas here. What is most apparent is the need to re-load with youth.
The mid-season surge that the Yankees enjoyed was a result of the young players like Joba, Ian, Shelley and others. I think the Yanks simply ran out of gas at the end of their amazing comeback from 14-1/2 games out. George Steinbrenner (or rather, the Yankee front office braintrust) should be looking at this comeback and realizing that Joe Torre is probably the only manager who could patiently deal with the situation he was handed and then, get the team back to the playoffs. The Yankees need to unload age (with the exception of a few of their key players who should be kept around as the core) and then they need to focus on the younger and hungrier attitude.
Our guys simply "hit the wall" in the first round these past 3 years. It's not Joe's fault, its the age of the team. Keep Andy, Hideki, Melky, Jorge, Mariano, Robbie, Derek as your core. Let go of Roger (retire already!), Johnny, Bobby, Giambi, Alex (he may be a 150+ RBI guy but he is also a jinx on this team). The youngsters will define this team in the future. Bring Girardi back as a coach (somewhere) and definitely keep Guidry. Dump Long as hitting coach.
I think that the rumor about LaRussa coming to manage is garbage. Same about Bobby Valentine. Steinbrenner is not all there these days. His sons need the advice and patient, steady hand of good baseball minds like Torre in the dugout. LaRussa is not a New York guy and would likely shake too much up in the organization. We don't need that damage ... there needs to be an
If I were Steinbrenner (or at least the owner of the New York Skankees), I would disband the team and chop Skankee Stadium up with an axe and sell the pieces for kindling.

Joe has burned out all the pitchers we had, remember the first series this year against Boston,he left a kid in just to have 5 homers in a row hit off him, this kid is gone today, out of baseball, and there were more,He likes all the brown noses, thats who he plays ,maybe we all should just wai't another year with this same MGR,and team and just pay all this money out and watch all the great Leftys we have bail out on anything out side,Yah Matusi, thjis guy stinks and he is so scared of the ball, that his right foot is in the dugout even before the pitch gets to him,and Jeter, whats his problem,Doesn't selabrate when the won the wild card?Everytime the kids in the dugout get happy and excited,he just stairs at them,But when A Rod or Posada do something then its ok,Hay,lets get on with this team,we need some help, any suggestions?Go Yankees.
YANKEE FANS start the new seson today, what do you do front runner, who are you rooting for today,Get a job,and maybe you can see the world better,TAKE 20 MINUTES AND TELL US WHO IS YOUR BACK UP CATCHER.You don't even have a team
So if you were George, you would do exactly what George always does??? Spend billions on big name free agents and more billions on keeping your aging super stars? Really original.
You don't have to look further than Olympic basketball to see what ails the yankees. Buying the most "talented" players does not mean you have the best team but the boss is stuck in his ways. And when you consider how actually buying and paying these player huge salaries disrupts the economics of baseball and fairness of mlb it really is time for changes in New York. Oh yeah....GO TRIBE!!!
It's really a good thing you aren't the owner (or maybe I should say you should be, since I hate the Yankees) because you're "suggestions" are terrible.
First off, blaming Cashman for "letting go of Bernie Williams." Are you serious? He's 40 YEARS OLD. THAT'S A 4 AND A 0. Not only that, he's not good anymore.
Second, "resigning Mussina?" Again, do you even pay attention? He had one of his best years last year at 15-8 with a 3.51 ERA, why wouldn't you.
Finally, I like how you think the Twins are just going to roll over and give the Yankees the best starting pitcher in baseball, and one of the best relievers for MELKY CABRERA - a light hitting utility outfielder. Are you retarded? Why would they trade Santana for Cabrera when Santana gives them so much more of a chance to win next year than MELKY CABRERA. I don't care if Santana's contract is expiring, the Twins are still trying to win next year and won't move him.
HEY PETER ANGELOS HERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFTIME. SHUT UP PULL OUT CHECK BOOK GET ON KNEES AND GET TORRE TO COME TO BALTIMORE. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES
IL SAY IT AGAIN A-ROD IS A-BUST!!!! HE SHOULD BE GIVING THE YANKEES A REBATE! NO WHERE ELSE DO YOU HAVE A CONCEIDED #### LIKE THIS! THAT CAN SKIN A BASEBALL (WHEN THERE IS NO PRESSURE ON HIM!) AND CRAWL UP IN THE FETAL POSITION, WHEN IT COMES TO EARNING YOUR PAY CHECK IN THE PLAY OFFS! ITS THE SAME OLD A-BUST SINCE 2003! THIS COWARDLY LION NEEDS TO GET SOME COURAGE? BETTER YET A SET OF ####.!!! IM TIRED OF EVERY OPPOSING PITCHER. USING THE JEDI MIND TRICK. TO MAKE A-BUST LOOK LIKE A DEAR CAUGHT IN THE HEAD LIGHTS! EVERY TIME A GAME IS ON THE LINE? LAST NIGHT HE CONTINUED HIS MISERABLE PERFORMANCE! ACCEPT FOR ANOTHER VINTAGE MEANINGLESS SOLO SHOT! IT WAS THE SAME THING THE WHOLE SERIES? HE LEFT 9 MEN ON BASE? WHERE WAS THE HOMER THEN??? GOD I CANT TAKE HIS ARROGANT A.S.S ANYMORE! AND HES GOT THE NERVE TO BE SALTY WITH JETER? NOW HE WANTS 40 MILLION A YEAR? AND THERES SECRET TALKS WITH THE CUBS? LISTEN UP? HES A SELFISH GUY! AND A UNDER ACHEIVER WHEN IT COUNTS! HEY A-BUST DELTA IS READY WHEN YOU ARE!!! TAKE A GREY HOUND UP THE ROAD TO BOSTON! YOUVE SOPPED UP ALL THE ELECTRICITY FROM THIS TEAM!! LETS GET RID OF THIS MONEY SEWER! HES 35% OF THE PAYROLL! MONEY COULD BE SPENT BETTER ELSE WHERE! 5 YEARS OF PLAY OFF TORMENT! GOOD BYE!! A-LOZER!(shopsavannahcatholic.com)
Here's a crazy thought but what about trading Jeter with Wang to Minnesota for Santana. He hasn't been "Mr. Clutch" for a while. How many rallies did he kill single handidly this series? A-Rod goes back to short and get Lowell to hold down the hot corner. Oh, Torre stays, Cashman goes and get Giambi to carry his bags.
This is pretty much the encapsulation of all the stupidest thought that surrounds the Yankees. I'll list the reasons
1. Buck Showalter did not have a hand in creating the old dynasty. Unless you don't remember, the Tampa office of the Yankees was dominant in all this time until Cashman tried to halt it. They ran Gene Michael out of town, who is a great talent evaluator and built the core of the team. I think some of the current youth surge may have been drafted/signed during the Michael/Watson era.
Go back to reading about Showalter during his reign in NY and ARI, he was universally disliked, and ended up losing his players (in ARI). His managerial talent was questioned in both places. He is not some genius.
2. Cashman did not sign Sheffield, Giambi, etc. George Steinbrenner's ego did. Remember the HBO interview where Sheffield mentioned that Torre and Cashman wanted Guerrero? At least unlike Sheff and the Giambino, as far as I know there is steroid claim against Vlad. George wants to bully the AL and wants to hoard all of the talent for himself. That makes him overpay for people who have been superstars for a while and have nowhere to go but down. (exception being a-rod who will continue to produce at his level for a few more years). Even genius GMs make mistakes and their teams fail to produce. Didn't Epstein sign Gagne? How did the "Money-Ball Genius" Billy Beane's A's do this year? Remember when Steinbrenner was in full control, the Yankees did not win for nearly 20 years. He has a big checkbook, but not baseball talent evaluation skills.
3. I love players like ####
Torre has to go. He has charmed the media so they protect him, but he is a terrible in game manager. When Zimmer left, the emperor had no clothes.
Fix the chemistry on the team. Yes, they all get along but I'm not talking about that kind of chemistry. Not everyone is driven to win. Maybe we need Paul O'Neil to teach them how to break a few water coolers.
I hate the Red Sox but I give them credit. Theo has done a masterful job. The Red Sox and Yankees both went after the two big Arizona pitchers. Who won? They, along with Toronto, went after the three big Florida pitchers. Who won? They each went after the big Japanese pitchers, Who won? Are you detecting a pattern here. Theo is running circles around Brian - that's just a fact.
Until George pulls a Ted Turner and hires someone to run the team, it will not matter who is the manager. I hope George never does that though. Go Red Sox
excellent piece ... maybe you should be present at the winter meetings? It's tough to cultivate a "family" atmosphere when george is demanding the team to WIN WIN!! The teams winning the world series of late are mostly young, hungry ,no-name groups that love to go out and play ball. Get rid of the !@#$%$ soap-opera BS surrounding the team and play ball. Have someone remind these multi-millionares where they came from .... the love of baseball propelled them to the big leagues, don't forget that passion and play ball.
You Yankee fans kill me. You kill A-Rod and give Jeter a pass. You would not have been in the post season if not for A-Rod. And what was Captain Jeter doing.....grounding into inning ending double play after double play. Did you see him stick up for A-Rod last year when he was in trouble or Torre in the last couple of days when Steingrabber made his comments. NO because he afraid of making a statement that might put him and his reputation in a bad light. Have some balls you are the Captain,
Now if I were Steinknobber I would drink the Grape KoolAid and rid everyone of his dicktastership. That would be the ideal scenario...
A-ROD is a bust... Simply put, Yankee fans are as ignorant as the reputation of the people in NYC. Why not praise and thank him for even giving you guys a shot to BE in the playoffs...
And in the famous words of Kurt Angle- It's True, It's True!!!
As a devoted Red Sox fan for over 50 years, all I can say is I empathize with Yankees fans but have no sympathy what so ever. "Superpower" has categorized the situation extremely well. The Yanks, the Dark Side, are not ordained to rule the baseball galaxy forever. MLB has more parity than anytime in it's history. Dynasties and domination belong to teams like the Patriots now, and the Yankees of old, when there were far fewer teams in competition. GS can throw all the dough he wants into his payroll, but the past few years have showed that to be fiscally irresponsible and wasteful. The Sox have always nurtured their farm clubs for talent...inexpensive talent! How about the play of Pedroia, Okajima, Ellsbury and Papelbon? The Sox are paying them next to nothing while they have helped keep the Red Sox on top all year. The Yanks want instant gratification yearly. Trying to buy World Series titles has never been a forward thinking exercise. Though I have to say I enjoyed their most recent collapse, I have to give the old guys credit for getting as far as they did.
Joe Torre is a great manager and human being. GS's threats are embarrassing, mean and infantile. If I were Joe I would hang it up, walk out of Yankee Stadium and never look back. Believe it or not, Red Sox fans have a great deal of respect for Joe Torre.
In April/May if you said the Yankees would make the playoffs you'd take it in a second. I'm a disappointed Yankees fan today. But my reason for disappointment is not that they didn't win a WS title, but the fact that they did not play up to their abilities. The simple fact is that Cleveland played BETTER than the Yankees. It wasn't bugs, it wasn't bad calls. It was the fact that the Cleveland players EXECUTED and the Yanks players didn't. 2 outs and RISP Cleveland went 12 for 25. Yanks were 1 for 8? It's the little things that win championships: situational hitting, base running, solid pitching from innings 1 through 9. I personally would love to see the Sox win another title just to #### off George.
I felt that Mr. Steinbrenner should have called in Mr. Torre privately before the playoffs and issued the ultimatum without going public with it after game two. Unless he wanted Mr. Torre out and this was his way of suggesting to the NYY fan base that an impending change was necessary, since the likelihood of a comeback at that time would have been remote. And if the Yankees did come back and win, guess who would take credit?
In as much as I believe Mr. LaRussa should be pursued as manager if Mr. Torre's contract is not renewed (based on his extensive resume), a strong second choice would be Mr. Girardi, since the Yankee organization historically hires former pinstripers -- and he would likely be a fan favorite.
Why are we talking about the Yankees. We should concentrate on the four teams still playing baseball. You closed mind people need to realize there is more to baseball than the bleeping Yanks.
As a lifelong fan of the Red Sox, I can honestly say that I have alot of respect for Joe and the Yanks (although I enjoy it everytime the Sox whip 'em!)
Georgie boy seems to forget that money will never win a ring...the heart of the players and the talents will. Proof - 2004 ALC series. Why did the Sox win? Because they had the most desire and heart. They played, in my mind, beyond their talents and abilities.
I could not believe that George would have the balls to say DURING the playoffs that if the Yanks didn't win Torre would be history. What a great way to bring a team together! George is the biggest #### in baseball (which is why he was great to make fun on Seinfeld.)
No matter how much money you spend, you can't win a ring every year. That is just the simple fact of life. I feel for the Yanks and their fans but hey we had to endure the stupid phrase "Curse of the Bambino" for how many years?
My name is Mike Gwizdala and I live in Albany, N.Y. The Capitol of the Empire State. I'm probably the biggest most knowledgeable , opinionated sports fan I know. First and foremost I'm an avid, die-hard New York Yankees fan. For those of you who don't know Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte amongst others all played their Double-A ball in Albany.
