The False Perception Of The Dallas Cowboys
Jul 16, 2008 | 3:16PM | report this
Mention the Dallas Cowboys in any circle, and the conversation is sure to get heated. The Cowboys (and perhaps the Patriots) are the most loved and most hated team in the NFL. While Dallas has taken great strides in cleaning up the "character issues" of the '90's, there is still a false perception of thuggery and criminal behavior, where once again, as in the '90's, the inmates are running the asylum. The truth is, this misconception couldn't be farther from the truth.

Foundation Of The Modern Misconception

During the 1990's the Dallas Cowboys rivaled the soap opera show Dallas for most intense drama. The most flamboyant Cowboy of all - Michael Irvin - made J.R. Ewing look comparatively tame and innocent. There were story lines of sex, drugs, attempted murder and murder for hire allegations that made it quite embarrassing to be a Cowboy fan.

Fans saw Irvin, the Cowboys' All-Pro receiver and a married man, charged with felony drug possession. They saw a man purported to be Irvin on secretly recorded videotape, talking about buying and using drugs. They read about an extortionist who, alleging that Irvin owed him money for drugs, threatened to blow up the offices of Irvin's attorney.

And then, in the story's darkest twist, fans learned that a Dallas police officer was accused of soliciting Irvin's murder after the football star reportedly threatened the officer's girlfriend (a stripper), a potential witness against him.

There was "The White House," code among the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990's for a house nearby their practice facility where some partook in illegal activities. "We got a little place over here where we're running some #### in and out, trying to be responsible," as Nate Newton said, "and we're criticized for that, too."

Remember this all came on the coat tails of Jerry Jones firing Tom Landry, one of the most revered members of the Cowboys franchise. As the story goes, Mr. Landry was playing golf in Austin when he received the news via telephone from a friend who had heard on the radio that Landry was fired and that he was replaced by University Of Miami coach Jimmy Johnson.

Personally, I struggled with the questions like "What does a city gain if it wins a Super Bowl but loses its soul? Do we forgive Irvin and forget because he catches passes and wins games?

A Change In Course

In May of 1997 Former Dallas Cowboys star Calvin Hill and his wife Janet were hired by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as consultants for the team, which was in dire need of image reshaping. This came on the heels of when, from October 1995 to November 1996, five Cowboys players were suspended by the NFL for a total of seven times for alcohol or substance abuse.

The Hills, parents of NBA model citizen and superstar Grant Hill, agreed to be consultants after a nationwide search by Jones. Mrs. Hill was vice president of the corporate consulting firm Alexander & Associates in Washington, D.C., which she founded.

Mr. Hill, formerly a vice president for the Baltimore Orioles, was an independent consultant. Mr Hill was also a consultant to the Cleveland Browns. As a consultant with the Cleveland, he helped form a group of Cleveland Browns' players to control and eliminate drug and alcohol related problems. Mr. Hill has written several articles on sports and academia for national publications, makes appearances at university campuses and business firms, throughout the United States. He addresses several topics including the problem of drugs and alcohol and the work needed in this area, and the important relationship of sports and academia.

As consultants they devised a wide-range plan that called for hiring of additional managers and staff. It was the Hills' job to create a support system that would try to teach players how to keep their personal lives safer and saner. They created a number of programs including family assistance, drug and alcohol abuse treatment, and career counseling. Calvin was enthusiastic about the Cowboys' future a year later, when he spoke to The Hartford Courant: "When I went to Dallas, I was expecting a team full of characters....what I found was a team of character. People tend to let a couple of incidents color the perception....Fame is a microscope, and with the Cowboys, it's an electron microscope."

The Cowboys clearly needed to assist players who were dealing poorly with fame and fortune. The Hills' work with the team is part of a larger trend towards support programs in college and professional sports. "I wish I could tell each guy here to put all the money away for a couple of years until they figure out what to do with it," he said in the Hartford Courant; "The problem is, these young men are socialized a certain way ... and then they are given more money than they ever could have envisioned. They get all that money and fame too quickly, before they know how to handle it," he continued. The personal problems professional athletes face are well known to the Hills, not only because of Calvin's experiences in the NFL, but because of their son Grant's career in the NBA. Speaking of Grant's entry into professional basketball in the Dallas Morning News, Calvin remembered, "We were scared to death ... because we know what's out there."

A New Direction

The Cowboys organization, unlike every other NFL team, has the infrastructure in place to handle NFL malcontents. Calvin Hill serves in that capacity, and given Dallas' success rate with not only keeping these guys out of trouble but getting them to be productive on the field, I'd say he's doing a pretty good job. No player on the Dallas Cowboys roster has been in legal trouble, as a Dallas Cowboy. NO other team in the NFL can say that.

The image and success Calvin Hill has brought to Dallas has been tested repeatedly by Jerry Jones. Before the Hills ever came to Dallas, Jones had a penchant for taking on basket cases, beginning with the remolding of Charles Haley. After having a falling out with the 49ers head coach George Seifert and a physical confrontation with then 49ers QB Steve Young, Haley was traded to Dallas - the only team willing to take on Haley and his violent temper - in the 1992 off-season. With the Cowboys he became a model citizen and team leader while winning three more Super Bowl rings over the next four seasons in 1992, 1993, and 1995.

Calvin Hill's work had an impact on the Cowboys draft choices also. Randy Moss grew up a Cowboys fan and wanted to play for the Cowboys. The Cowboys wanted Moss, but due to many off-field incidents of their own, Jerry Jones did not feel they could draft Moss. Michael Irvin even called to apologize to Moss, because Irvin's own off-field problems were a main reason Moss was not drafted by Dallas.

Since that draft, Moss has made a history out of beating up on the Cowboys. Before he was drafted, Randy Moss had stood outside the D/FW Marriott following his pre-draft visit to the Cowboys and vowed to make every team that passed on him pay. Perhaps Jerry Jones should have listened. Jones and the Cowboys chose not to take a chance on Moss, given their success with avoiding character issue baggage. Perhaps the greatest thrill in Moss' career come from torching Dallas at every opportunity. He seems to have his best games living up to that pre-draft vow.

In 2003 the Cowboys went 10-6 with Quincy Carter as the starting quarterback and got back in the playoffs in Bill Parcells’ first year in Dallas. Carter passed for 3,305 yards with 17 touchdowns as the Cowboys advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 1999. Carter, a 2nd round draft pick in 2001, was released by Coach Bill Parcells - for what is believed to be a failed in house drug test - under Dallas' strict code of conduct policy.
Carter could not be trusted with the leadership of the team. Strike one, you're out.

If you'll notice, there is ONE Team missing. One team which failed to gain the notoriety brought on by a shameful arrest or conviction. Who could that be?? Well I'll be damned, if it aint those wily, slick and crafty Dallas Cowboys. Who would have guessed it??

Last Chance Stop

Is it really any wonder that players on their last straw are eager to go to Dallas and save their career? The success stories are many, and the failure rate is almost non existent. Demetrius Underwood is the only failure, if you can call it that. To this day he still has a severe mental disorder, and played his short career while being diagnosed with a Bipolar disorder.

The finest example of success is Deion Sanders.
Sanders voted the 1994 NFL Defensive Player Of The Year and recorded an interception in the 49ers 49-26 win over the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. After the season, Jerry Rice and Sanders publicly feuded — Rice fumed at the idea that the media felt Sanders was the missing link to the 49ers Super Bowl run and that it was not giving credit to the other 52 men in the locker room. This ultimately resulted in Sanders feeling unappreciated by the 49ers organization and he opted to leave the team.

After his public dispute with Jerry Rice, and the 49ers, and not feeling valued by the franchise, Cowboys' owner Jones brought Sanders' "Prime Time" show to Dallas.

During his time in Dallas, Sanders not only found happiness, but found himself as well as finding God.

As I stated above,
the Cowboys, unlike every other NFL team, has the infrastructure in place to handle NFL malcontents. Can any other team in the league say that?

JOKERSWILD - I just updated the blog post to include the link at the bottom. That's an ungodly long list huh? And yet no Cowboy is worthy of making the list. People in glass houses need to exercise caution while throwing rocks.

Thanks for stopping by!

Midnite Cowboy; = Dallas Cowboy, never put that together, i guess i could have read your bio?

It took me about 10 minutes to read this, which is about 8 minutes more than my attn span will usualy allow. But since you have probably been waiting all your life, for the window of opportunity to open, so you could write it, i figured, the least i could do is read it all.....

I'm a Steeler fan to the bone, and i still have issues dating back to Cliff Harris and Hollywood Henderson, and on up to the boat load of money that Neil O'Donnel recieved from a mysterious fan from the Dallas Fort Worth area so please forgive me...

Excellent read, MC.

That said, I have never liked the Cowboys. Funny, though, I do not think of thuggery when I think of the boys, that would be the Raiders.

My dislike of the boys stems from the "America's Team" #### and from Jerry Jones (Steinbrenner of the NFL).

I guess the surest way to get me to dislike something is to tell me that I'm SUPPOSED to like it. LOL.

b@0 - It is rather long so thanks for sticking with it. The longest part is the rap sheet. As for the Steelers, they seem to have issues respecting women. Other than that, I've nothing against them. We get to see a Cowboys/Steelers game this season, which doesn't happen often enough!

GoSeaHox... Maybe thuggery was a wrong choice of words. Perhaps it should be "criminals". Most people aren't aware, but the America's Team label was not self-imposed.

Bob Ryan, the Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys in 1979. After preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film he had to come up with a title for the film. As a life long fan, Bob decided the title would be a great fit. He was quoted as saying:

"I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television."

Thanks for reading and, uhm, remember, you're SUPPOSED to hate the Cowboys!

Great stuff.
As a 16 year DFW resident, I waited till a couple years back, before I'd let myself like the current crop of clean players.

Irvin was total scum and I still have no respect for his current act.

slshusker - Hey I hope you're doing good! I need to get out more. I've been neglecting the blog site here but I'm gearing up for the new NFL season.

Believe me I totally understand the animosity. Those bad-ole-days were a nightmare. I do commend the staff at Valley Ranch for having perhaps the cleanest organization in the league. Calvin Hill must be putting in a lot of overtime!

This guy Calvin Hill has my respect for what he's accomplished over there in Dallas. So do the players as well because without their willingness to be better people then nothing Mr. hill said or did would matter.

I'm not a Cowboy hater really I just hate arrogant fans of any team. I mean it's fine to talk smack and all that as long as it's done in good taste. I'm glad your not in that group of annoying group midnite.

Goodluck to your 'boys this season.

Good blog with impressive research. A little misleading in that several players listed are now Cowboys, such as DT Tank, and CB Pacman Jones. Also some players such as the Seahawks mentioned were listed 2 or 3 times for the same offense. Once for their arrest, once for their plea, and once for their judgement. Also listed 3 times was a former Seahawk Warren Moon. He is not now a player or a part of the team he is simply a radio announcer. Other than that it does show Dallas is making a turn around. Good for them Boys!

Excellent post with very extensive research and information.

But, to echo Hox, I never considered the 'Boys to be thugs or even criminally inclined - the Oakland Raiders always got my ire for such things, most likely because they used to be a Seahawks division rival in the old AFC West.

That being said, I don't like the Cowboys at all. It's not that I dislike them, it's just that I have no interest in them. Also, much like Notre Dame, USC, Atlanta, the New York Yankees, et al... even when they were terrible, they were on national television all the time, and undeservedly so - the best belong on TV, not the most popular or most notorious.

Notorious. That might be a better word to describe the old Irvin-era Cowboys.

As a kid I was a big fan of Calvin Hill the player and he's still a winner. Is it true that backin the bad old days that Coach Barry Switzer was sighted on a gun charge. If true I can't say as I blame him, I would be packing heat myself if I had to hang out with that bunch.

gambitxxx - The job Mr. & Mrs Hill have done in Dallas is amazing. It really is scary for a 22 year old to be thrust into stardom as an instant millionaire. It's all about choices, and choosing NOT to allow yourself to be in a potentially bad situation. Cowboys preach that from day one with all signees.

I'm with you on the arrogant fans. I can and will be non-partisan and objective in blog forums. But come game day at home - it's a different story!

I see good things for your Saints this season also. A revamped defense there should create turnovers and 3-and-out situations, giving the offense more opportunities to put points on the board. Thanx for stopping by.

Hawkwiz - There aren't "several" players that are list who are now Cowboys. And it is not "such as Tank and Packman", it is ONLY Tank and Packman.

Still don't miss the point. The purpose of the blog was to shed light on WHY players on their last possible chance want to come to Dallas.

All too often I read opinions that Dallas is loading the bus with criminal castaways and gangsters with no regard for ethics. I just wanted to explain that Dallas has had great success in turning around players' lives, something that tends to be omitted from the punch line.

I'm with you on the incidents noted above. If you read profootballtalk.com they explain their process. I just used their existing list as a reference. Thanks for sharing your opinion!

rmac1973 - I still needed to get this out, if only for personal satisfaction. I forget who wrote it, but a couple of weeks back a FOX reporter did an article on the "circus" act in Dallas and there was a poll question. NONE of the answer options depicted the situation could have a positive ending.

It's like asking a man in public "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" and only allowing him to publicly respond with a yes or no answer.

Thanks for sharing your opinions!

You might have a point about Switzer! Still... It cost him his job. Like Quincy Carter, it was "strike one, you're out"!

There've been stark changes within the Cowboys' organization over the years. And in some cases it has been for the better and in others it's been for the worst.

However at this juncture they seem to be back on an even keel. But that's liable to implode at any moment merely because of the ego's present on this team. As such who is there to provide leadership on this team ? Is it TO ? Is it Romo or any of the other elder statesmen on this team ?
'cause it sure as hell won't be coming from Wade Phillips or Jason Garrett with regard to this team.

The players only pay lip service to the coaches when things are good. But when they're bad they just tend to whine and act like spoilt kids.

That being said the Cowboys aren't the only team within the league that has this problem. When compared to the Bengals, the Cowboys come off as acolytes.

the cowpokes could be the cleanest team in the n f l and i still would not like the franchise.thats the way it is and thats the way it will stay.crime and drugs are a way of life in this country.rich or poor it does not matter and as a skins fan they have had their problems as well but they just seem to i mean the media seems to put this franchise above the rest.no it is not jealousy by no means it just don't seem right.like e s p n,they have done nothing but talk about the pokes this off season on n f l live.i can't stand to watch.hail to the redskins.anybody but dallas.oh yea i hate the pats to,but i got to say they put a woppin on my team last season.hats off or were they spying.lol.

redskinforlife... Skins/Boys rivalry is the best in the NFL. I clearly agree that Dallas is over-hyped by the media. Look at today's FOX NFL home page - "T.O. says Jessica is welcome at stadium" - and tell me how that headline is pertinent to the actual goings on in the league. Also - I have an utter disdain for the Redskins, and that's the way it should be. That said, I've met some wonderful people here at FOX that are Skins, Eagles and Giants fans. Thanks for stopping by.

Tell me what team that you don't know that doesn't have that sort of situation one way or another ? It comes with the territory. Some teams prefer to keep it behind close door and others let it fly.

It doesn't matter if it happens at the pro level or college. It happens nevertheless.

See my most recent post and let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ? I'll look forward to reading your comments. I've provided a direct link to the piece in question. Just click on the link (site) to view in its entirety.

Great Post Midnite well wrtten and well researched. As a SKINS fan of course we dont care for each others team all that much. To tell you the truth I wouldn't pee on a Dallas fan if he or she was on fire, but at least you are honest enough to admit that the cowboys had and deserved one of the worst reputations in pro football during the 90's. That being sd every team has had or have a player (s) on the wrong side of the law...right or wrong the perception is that the cowboys are the farm team for the federal prison system. The reality is that they continue to bring problem children onto the team.. T.O was a major success story and Tank and Pac Man are still question marks. Mr.Hill can only do so much.

Peace.

DGREEN - I make no attempts to hide the fact that the Cowboys were an embarrassment to Dallas in the '90's. As I stated above: What does a city gain if it wins a Super Bowl but loses its soul?

I am now very proud that the organization is a trend setter in keeping players trouble-free in this modern era. T.O. is only the latest on a long list of troubled careers that have been turned around and salvaged in Dallas.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

You hear about most of these arrests daily and you lose track how many there actually are. Pretty insane someone that is constantly going to be in the news as an athlete or celebrity would allow themselves to be caught in these situations. Just got one thing to point out though- a number of the players on this list are players that are being drafted or switching teams with arrests prior to arriving at their new team. How is this any different then the Cowboys adding Tank Johnson (gun charges) and Adam Jones (is it 11 arrests?) in the past year?? I think this is why they are still percieved they way they are. They don't steer clear of these players that seem to get into trouble. I'm not saying it is bad that they don't, because if they are able to turn the lives of Johnson and Jones around, then they are doing their job.

the only false perception about the cowboys is that they're good... because they suck ... tony romo is a slightly more succesful, way more hyped version of rex grossman and it show this year when the cowboys dont win the division and lose their first playoff game again giving them a solid 13 years without a playoff win...

CBarrett - Most likely Jerry Jones isn't trying to win any humanitarian award. If the Cowboys weren't poised for a Super Bowl run, I'm not so sure he'd be taking these risks. Then again Alonzo Spellman had issues before and after playing with the Cowboys, but was issue free during his tenure in Dallas, when Dallas was actually a bad team.

What does allow the Cowboys to take a chance on someone like Adam Jones is their success rate at turning around careers.

I hail from a large family where after school we went in 7 different directions, to either play or coach in every sport available. As a child I got in free to the Cowboy games at the Cotton Bowl as a tag-along to my Dad's credentials. It was the ultimate childhood dream scenario to play football there, under the lights with the kids of other players and personnel after the games. I have been a Cowboys fan since those days in the 60's and like Willie Nelson says "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys". I've witnessed a few Stars Stanley Cup games and I have been a Mavericks fan since day one. Hopefully, in the future, G.W. Bush will re-take control of the Texas Rangers and they will once again become competitive.
