This is an interesting story that I had to get out. Perhaps the story
of Rochelle High School, a one school k-12 building with 176 students,
competing on a state level is an accomplishment. But to win the event
is newsworthy. To win it with ONE single athlete is remarkable.
The school doesn't even have a real track. The closest track is about 10 miles away and the team trains there.
Bonnie Richardson was the only member of the team to qualify for State
competition. University Interscholastic League rules limited her to
compete in only 5 events. Only? What an accomplishment in itself! So
she ran. She threw. She jumped.
In the two day state track and field event, Richardson's title march began Friday when she won
the gold medal in the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), silver medal in the long jump (18-7)
and was bronze in the discus (121-0).
On Saturday, she won the gold in the 200 meters in 25.03 seconds and nearly
pulled off a huge upset in the 100 before finishing second (12.19) to
defending state champion Kendra Coleman of Santa Anna.
When it was all over - Miss Bonnie Richardson scored 42 team points to
win the Texas 1A TEAM track title, edging out team runner-up Chilton
High School(36 points).
So congratulations Bonnie, who won it in the state of Texas.
Not a small state or jurisdiction. This is an amazing accomplishment.
By the way, she also plays tennis and led her basketball team to the
state semifinals last season.
"I'd play football if my parents would let me," she said. "Not quarterback. Defense."
volfan69 - Glad you like it. She won a single gold medal in state competition last year (as a sophomore) and was the toast of the school and the town. I can only imagine how proud they all are now! Gotta Love them positive stories.
wow i thought i was the only one, talking about track!!!! as ive said i live in eugene, oregon .. the track capitol of the world... or as they say????? not alot of days left until the olympic trials here in eugene at hayward field!!!!
Hey guys I just got in from the Stars game. GREAT WIN! Beats the hell out of elimination!...
husker - I can see some Jenner, but I immediately thought a young Canseco when I saw her. She'll be immortalized in her tiny town. Like Al Bundy's 4 TDs in one game.
kellyscott - I can love me some track. I ran track in H.S. till I got caught smoking cigarettes. I made a vow to myself back then that one of these days I'll quit smoking. And I mean it too!
I hail from a large family where after school we went in 7 different directions, to either play or coach in every sport available. As a child I got in free to the Cowboy games at the Cotton Bowl as a tag-along to my Dad's credentials. It was the ultimate childhood dream scenario to play football there, under the lights with the kids of other players and personnel after the games. I have been a Cowboys fan since those days in the 60's and like Willie Nelson says "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys". I've witnessed a few Stars Stanley Cup games and I have been a Mavericks fan since day one. Hopefully, in the future, G.W. Bush will re-take control of the Texas Rangers and they will once again become competitive.
