The Bidding War For DeAngelo Hall
Feb 23, 2008 | 3:11PM | report this
The often controversial DeAngelo Hall woke up in his hotel room yesterday morning to find missed calls and text messages on his cell phone. The subject matter? A possible trade that would send him to the Giants.

Hall had well documented trouble getting along with Atlanta coach Bobby Petrino last year. Hall's feud with Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith, a former friend, exploded with three penalties on Carolina's game-winning drive, after which Hall got into a shouting match with Petrino on the sideline. It resulted in a fine, a benching for the first quarter of the following week's game and cemented Hall's reputation to many NFL fans and media as being a hothead.

... ... ... ...
... ... ... ... .. DeAngelo Hall delivers a controversial late hit on Kitna in November 2006

Hall had insisted that he wanted to stay in Atlanta, until his feelings were hurt when he found out from friends that his name was mentioned by the Falcons as being available for trade offers.

What a difference a day makes. Now he is throwing a major temper tantrum and demanding a trade.

... ... ... ..
... ... ... ... Fantasy: Hall claiming to "own" Ocho Cinco in a 2007 preseason game.
... ... ... ... Reality: Chad went for 83 yards on five catches and a touchdown. I can
... ... ... .. .only assume Hall immediately shaved his dome after the game.

"I wanted to stay," he said. "I don't want to stay now. It's a little bit of a betrayal. I feel like these guys kind of stabbed me in the back." ...You know what? I'll go anywhere, anywhere they want me," Hall said Friday. "And that's the thing. It's hard to play or be a part of an organization that doesn't want you, so I just want to go somewhere that wants me."

A real tear jerker huh? With remarks like that, you can pretty much assume that the 24 year old has punched his ticket out of Atlanta. Giants were reported to have offered a first round draft pick for the prima donna cornerback.

... ... ... ...
.. .. .. .. .. .. Hall being owned by T.O. in 2006. One of T.O.'s two touchdown catches
... ... ... ... ..
against DeAngelo in a 100+ yard receiving game by Terrell Owens.

We will probably hear where he lands as soon as Friday, when the new league year begins and trades are once again permitted to be made. The question is if he'll wind up with the Giants or one of several other teams who were quickly rumored to be interested in acquiring him. The Redskins, Buccaneers, Dolphins and Cowboys were mentioned by yesterday afternoon. Those teams' possible interest means the Giants might be forced to sweeten the trade offer. If so, they could be willing to part with another draft pick from the later rounds. Expect a bidding war to emerge as this story grows.

Isn't this one of those bidding wars that you'd love to be able to watch on Ebay!

Midnite,
I was just reading about this at another website. Here's what I think. The Saints who are looking to draft a CB with their first pick(10) should give some consideration to this. Although he (Hall) is a hothead it doesn't change the fact he is one of the top 5CB's in this league. If I were the Saints GM I would give Atlanta a first and another pick in a later round aquire Hall from them. He's still young with no significant injuries as of yet in his career. Atleast the Saints would know what caliber of a player they would be getting, instead of a draftee that may end up being a bust.

With Asante Samuel rumored to be seeking $10 million per year, trading for Hall becomes more realistic. Why wouldn't the Patriots - who own the 7th pick - step up and do the same? Pats could lose Samuel and get a shut-down corner at a cheaper price - those b*stards!

As you mention, whoever trades for him knows what caliber of a player they will be getting. No risk or development involved.

It's unsettling isn't it? Fact is, he's a necessary evil to many teams in a "win now" world. You aren't feeling sympathetic towards his bruised and fragile ego? Lol... Neither am I. And he's crying all the way to the bank.

Midnite,
That's true but here's the kicker. He has only 1 year left on his current contract and although he said that whatever team who makes a trade for him doesn't have to do anything about his contract this year one can only wonder what he'll be asking for next season. But like you said if you are a team that is in a win now situation it's a no brainer. Regardless of his crybaby antics the guy can play CB and does it pretty well.

Hey Midnite!

Think I'd hesitate picking up Hall. The cost might be more than monetary. He strikes me as a loose cannon... Think if I was New Orleans, Dallas, or whoever is in dire need of a CB I might look at the draft instead of a trade or the free agent market.

I know there are team owners out there that somehow find a way to continually throw money at these guys. In that vein, I see where Jerry Jones wants to re-write Tony Romo's deal now to buy himself more cap room. Maybe the Boys are positioning themselves for a run at Hall...

We'll see...

As a Falcons fan (yeah, sad, I know), I can't stand this street thug, and the sooner he's gone, the better. I don't care how good of a player he is, I'd rather root for guys that have a hint of character. Hall didn't even seem to have the slightest bit of remorse after his meltdown against Carolina (which pretty much cost the Falc's that game). His personal battle with Smith was far more important to him than the outcome of the game. And he was upset that he was being punished for his actions! Somebody, please take this guy (but not the Saints or anybody else in the NFC South for that matter!).

a2dsayer,
I love you Falcons fans. I love the rivalry between our two teams even more. Yes you guessed it I'm a Saints fan who would welcome Hall with open arms. With the way things have been going in Atlanta though it wouldn't matter as we'll be spanking that #### for a few more years to come.

You bring up a great point. There has to be a degree of scepticism over giving up a first round pick, and possibly more for a guy that in all likelihood will bolt and chase the almighty dollar next year.

Dwindy1...
Yes he's one of the latest characters to emerge in the "Look At Me" generation of NFL athletes. It's a bitter pill to #### in order to enhance your teams chances of getting to the big dance.

s2dsayer...
No one understands more than the Falcon fan how one player can hold a teams future hostage. I'm sure you'd love to see him gone, but for every fan like you there are 500 that would welcome him to town with a ticker-tape parade. Sad truth.

countryjag...
Welcome and thanks for the remark. I don't know about J'ville, but you can safely assume Hall won't be a Tuna helper.

I rest my case. One man's meal is another man's poison, one man's ceiling is another man's floor. It's a vicious cycle.

Thanks Midnite,
For bringing this guy to my attention.
He flew under my radar because I am a Colts/Dolphins fan and never played in any of the games I was watching....

After reading how TO and Ocho Cinco burnt his a@SS and telling the coach off, I dont want to see him anyway.

Atlanta, after all they been through, doesnt need this guys BS!

Just an idea, but the lions should trade Shawn Rogers to Atlanta for D. Hall. I think it would help both teams as Atl has a need ar DT, and Detroit obviously needs a corner

midnite,

i think you already know how i feel about Hall, but for the record.....

frankly, i dont care what kind of "reputation" this guy has. he is one of the best in the league, and hes young. he is well worth a 1st and 3rd (preferably 4th) round pick. you know what you are getting with hall, and you know hes going to be worth the little bit money he will get next year. and honestly... who doesnt get burned by T.O. and Chad J once in a while?!?!? i say if you have to give up 2 draft picks (especially if your the Giants... the 3rd youngest team in the league) then it’s a no brainier.

i think DJs problems is that hes on a losing team that has NO shot at winning thier division in 2-3 yrs. a lot of ppl said that plax was a hot head when he was traded to NY, but that never happened. i think if DJ gets on a winning team hes not going to act like a fool... and not only that, hes going to want to show everyone that he is the best, and try and get some more money when they make up the new contract.

i am hoping that Hall comes to NY, but wherever he goes, hes going to be good. and if i was on Bobby Petrinos team... i would probably cuss him out as well. i mean honestly... it not like hes a good coach.

and if you get DJ, and he does act like an ####, and your team does have to get rid of him..... what do u lose??? 1.65 mil... and a 2 draft picks. i know for a fact that NY has lost WAY more than that in the last few years in the draft looking for good players. and i think a lot of team can say the same.

people dont like players like Hall and shockey cuz they can

people dont like players like Hall and shockey cuz they cant keep their damn mouths shut... and at the same time, they hate Eli cuz hes too quiet and shows very little emotion... i mean WTF?? no one is going to be the best player, but i say if your good (and in Halls case... Young and good) then you deserve a shot.

Personally, i would be pissed if i played for ATL,
i dont think there is a worse team in the NFL right now. at least Miami has Tuna there to fix everything.

Hey cclark55...
It's always good to get your perspective and opinion. Hall has 2 years left on his contract, but you know he's going to pitch a fit real soon for the $10 million dollars a season mad money. Given the talent level of quarterbacks and receivers in the NFC East, he's probably worth the risk.

As gambitxxx (Saints fan) pointed out, many teams are drawing an interest. I'm sure Dallas and Philly, maybe even cash strapped Washington will give a lot of consideration to trading for him.

In his defense I'll admit that T.O.'s a year older and Hall has another year of experience since the last meeting. After the issue of whether or not T.O. spit in his face in that 2006 game, it has the makings for a marque match-up when they meet again. And for the record, I'd welcome him to Dallas also.

Re: DHall, I say to all GMs...Run Forrest!

This nutjob is too high risk.
His on the field temper can lose a game and that's unforgivable to us fans.
As a GM, do you want this fool talking smack about you to the media?

There is no disputing that the young DeAngelo is a talent... In spite of the highlight photos/stories of him getting burned. After all, the 'great' pro-bowl player Al Harris was eviscerated by Plaxico in the NFC Championship Game, as we all remember. Maybe DeAngelo would indeed fit into our Giants. I say that because our coach Tom Coughlin is a tough, strict disciplinarian with an SB ring to back up his edicts. He'll have Hall on a tight leash, and D co-ord Spagnuolo can appreciate the addition to bolster up our somewhat shaky DB corps. As cclark sez, we have the 3rd youngest team (maybe the youngest, save for 41-y.o. P Jeff Feagles and 37 y.o. Strahan) so it may be a good gamble to negotiate an early draft pick to sweeten the deal.

Yeah he's a bit of a loose cannon, but after the likes of Tiki, Strahan and Shockey, Coughlin is probably the most capable and tolerant coach available to him. He probably couldn't even get Coughlin to raise an eyebrow.

Winning often has a way of soothing the angry beast in prima donna players. Case in point: Look how T.O. and Moss are model citizens on their teams. With the All-Star cast of quarterbacks and receivers in the NFC East, these risks are very worthy of consideration.

Note that when Dallas stole Deion Sanders from the 49ers, it wasn't because Dallas needed him as much as Dallas couldn't let San Francisco re-sign him. When you are near the top of the Conference, every A-game player available warrants a very close look.

But you are right... he's a Very loose cannon. I like the image of "The Dude". Way cool...

Excellent comment and there isn't much more that I can add. Cowboys and Giants are 2 of the youngest teams in the NFC. This is FAR from over for either team. As cclark and gambitxxx noted, this would eliminate the chance of drafting a bust and eliminate the time needed to develop a player. He's a ready made ingredient. Just add football.

I hail from a large family where after school we went in 7 different directions, to either play or coach in every sport available. As a child I got in free to the Cowboy games at the Cotton Bowl as a tag-along to my Dad's credentials. It was the ultimate childhood dream scenario to play football there, under the lights with the kids of other players and personnel after the games. I have been a Cowboys fan since those days in the 60's and like Willie Nelson says "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys". I've witnessed a few Stars Stanley Cup games and I have been a Mavericks fan since day one. Hopefully, in the future, G.W. Bush will re-take control of the Texas Rangers and they will once again become competitive.
