While reading the the current state of affairs at Camp Cowboy, aka
Jerry World, It becomes quite puzzling to sort out the hidden messages.
Is Wade Phillips good-as-gone? Jason Garrett - a lock to become an NFL
head coach in the not too distant future - was instrumental in placing
some of the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff in place before the arrival
of head coach Wade Phillips.
The
now Defensive Coordinator Brian Stewart was one of only a few
assistants brought on board the Cowboys ship by Wade Phillips. He's
Wade's guy. Now I'm reading that multiple sources say the Cowboys Have offered Dom Capers a job as the defensive coordinator or a defensive consultant.
Capers is a respected defensive coach who has been a head coach for
Houston and Carolina. But he's had more success as a coordinator.
Capers,
who gave Stewart his first NFL job with the Houston Texans in 2002,
asked the Cowboys' coordinator Brian Stewart if Capers' presence on the
staff would bother him.
A day later, sources said, Stewart told Capers that indeed he would be
uncomfortable if the veteran coach joined the organization. Capers,
according to sources, told Stewart he would pass on the opportunity to
join the team.
When Capers informed the Cowboys of his decision, the club talked him into coming to Valley Ranch on Tuesday for an interview.
If he accepts a position, sources said, Capers is leaning toward the
consultant role. Now what makes this story most interesting was Jason
Garrett's head coaching offers a few weeks ago. Jerry Jones offered
Garret approximately $3 million dollars a year - roughly the same
salary as Wade Phillips - to remain in Dallas. Is Wade good-as-gone?
Capers was Jason Garrett's choice to be his defensive coordinator if
Garrett became the head coach in Baltimore or Atlanta.
Bob Seger's lyrics keep playing in my mind. I picture Wade Phillips talking to Jones:
Tell me quick said old mcfee (Phillips) Whats this all have to do with me? Ive spent all my time at sea a loner.
Is there something else I should know? Something hidden down below the level of your conversation? Well he turned away before the answer Though I yelled aloud he refused to hear It became to clear So it went as we put out I was left in constant doubt Everything I asked about seemed private
Are Wade Phillips' days as Head Coach of the Cowboys numbered? Is he as good as gone in Dallas?
Like Al Davis, Jones wants to play with his toys, not just pay for them. But after seeing what the Raiders have gone through, it would be hard to fire Phillips. Plus putting Garrett in now would place too much pressure to repeat a 13-3 season. If he went 10-6 or worse missed the playoffs, where would Garrett stand? Let him play the role of a number one draft pick QB one more year, hold a clip board and he can step in if Phillips fails to win another playoff game.
Yeah it seems Jones is back to his pre-Parcells era meddling ways. He's also brought in Hudson Houck and Chan Gailey, two assistants who were spectacular in the 90's glory years.

Were I in Wade's position I'd clearly be looking over my shoulders as to Jerry's machinations. He's liable to get that knife out and part his shoulder blades.
But that's just Jerry as that's the way he likes to conduct business.
I think this was JJ's plan all along. He needed to see Garrett as an OC for one year, then he could bring in the back-end support to ease Wade out after 2008. When Dave Campo starts getting re-hired, you know something is up.
Hey tophatal - Always good to get your opinion. Machinations might be a bit harsh. While it's certainly scheming and crafty on Jones part, I think he's rather overt in his direction. Which leads to...
moseby - I'm right there with you. I believe Phillips knows he was hired as a lame duck coach. When Garrett was back-up quarterback to Aikman, Jones wanted to hire him as Offensive Coordinator. Jason chose to move on and play a few more years first. I believe Jones sees the development of Garrett as part of his own legacy.

I think that you'll like my two latest pieces within this forum. As both deal with Texas teams. The Baylor University basketball program and offcourse the Cowboys. Check 'em both out and let me know what you think as to their merits ?
They're titled I See Your First Round Draft Pick And Raise You Two First Rounders And A Free Agent ! Then there's If It Feels Good Then It's Got To Be Good !
I'll look forward to reading your comments.
The answer is.... if he does not win a Super bowl next year, then he is gone. That is harsh but Jones missed out on Sean Payton and basically will not let that happen again. I always find it hilarious how you people alwayays accuse Jerry and Al Davis of meddling when they are the GMs of their respective teams. Problem is no one can fire them because they own the teams as well. Phillips knows that this team is on the verge of greatness, if he can replace Terry Glenn's production, utilize Owens' twilight years, and Romo's prime years. There are few better jobs (Packers and Patriots excluded) than this Cowboys job and Phillips knew it and will use that to motivate him instead of worrying about Garrett.
Wade's Head Coaching career is the equivalent of his getting food from the drive thru, and what did Joe Pesci in Lethal Weapon 46 say about getting food from the drive thru?
You always get f%ck!d when you get food from the drive thru...
It's his whole head coaching career he replaces guys , does OK but still gets canned by the crazy owner or GM for some other guy a year or two later...
He's a rebound coach...

Garrett has already been deemed the 'heir apparent' for the job. And is now being groomed for it. Why else would he have turned the offers from Baltimore and Atlanta respectively ? That $3m per year is now burning a hole in Garrett's back pocket. Jones in all certainty told him that the job is as good as his should Phillips screw things up.
And we all know how Jerry likes to treat his coaches when they're not successful don't we ?
Wade Phillips has one more year. He will NOT be fired this off season. However, anything short of a Super Bowl victory and Wade Phillips is gone. The only reason he was hired instead of Garrett simply becoming the Head Coach is because no veteran coordinators were available.
Phillips knew this was the situation going in; he knows it now. He wanted to give Stewart an opportunity but I wouldn't say Stewart's defense was exactly stellar. I hope they do hire Capers and keep Phillips and Stewart afraid. Then maybe they'll have intensity because they'll know their jobs are on the line.

Garrett is the heir apparent in waiting for the job just in case things go south with Phillips.
See my post titled I See Your First Round Draft Pick And Raise You Two First Rounders And A Free Agent !
Let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ?
DatSTAR... Haven't seen of you in months! Welcome back! I'm right there with you on the bitter truth of it. Jones believes in Garrett. Handing over the reins of a championship caliber team to a man with only a season or two of quarterback coaching on his resumme is a huge leap. The handoff is inevitable, maybe a year away.
Midnite'
It may well be a year away or not. As who knows what runs through the mind of Jones ? He's a man who it can be said doesn't suffer fools gladly. And if Phillips isn't getting the job done he'll dump him unceremoniously . And I think we both know that no matter what Phillips' pedigree is.
edhardiman.. Ha ha... I haven't heard it put that way, but yeah Wade is just a rebound affair to Jerry Jones, and we all know rebound affairs are just a temporary feel good.
rusirious13... Good to hear from you again. I think you summed it up pretty good. Stewart and Phillips looked over matched this year. The Dallas Defense played under its talent value. If not for Jason Garrett's Offense outscoring many of the teams this year, the Dallas Cowboys could have easily been 10-6, maybe 9-7. When we stopped scoring we stopped winning. Wheres the "D"! Mr. Fix it was a Joke!
After a 21 play 90 or so yard drive by the Dallas Cowboys offense, the Dallas Cowboys defense with 30 seconds left in the first half and an 80 million dollar defense allowed the giants to drive 70 or so yards to score 7 points to end their season 21 - 17.
I haven't heard the final word on Capers, but I hope he jumps on board. Brian Stewart and Wade Phillips non aggressive defense underachieved when it was all on the line, But then we all saw the dropped coulda-been TDs. And Garrett had a brain #### going with MB3's running only 5 times in the 2nd half against the Giants when he had over 100 yards in the 1st half. This machine could use a little tweaking.
With 2 former head coaches under him, Stewart will be forced to produce results, or else.
I hail from a large family where after school we went in 7 different directions, to either play or coach in every sport available. As a child I got in free to the Cowboy games at the Cotton Bowl as a tag-along to my Dad's credentials. It was the ultimate childhood dream scenario to play football there, under the lights with the kids of other players and personnel after the games. I have been a Cowboys fan since those days in the 60's and like Willie Nelson says "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys". I've witnessed a few Stars Stanley Cup games and I have been a Mavericks fan since day one. Hopefully, in the future, G.W. Bush will re-take control of the Texas Rangers and they will once again become competitive.
