As you may or not know, Mr. Met is one of this year's candidates for the "Mascot Hall of Fame." Only one of the six candidates will get in. As of today Mr. Met trails his longtime nemesis, the San Antonio Spurs "Coyote," by roughly 6,000 votes.
Note to self...chewing gum while doing an interview is extremely unprofessional.
Having spent some time working with current Hall of Fame mascot, the San Diego Chicken (See Week 14 Blog below), I can tell you that Mr. Met is the epitomy of a Hall of Fame Mascot...A sure fire first ballotter.
Voting ends September 6th. Let's put Mr. Met where he belongs.
Brooklyn Dodgers...
Whenever the Dodgers come to Shea you can always find a bunch of frustrated Brooklyn Dodger fans at the park...this time is no different as Brooklyn native Larry King and I share some memories about "Dem Bums"
Giving Back...
Sammy Sosa said it best..."Baseball has been very very good to me." Today I give back. After his interview I teach Dodgers' pitcher (and Saturday's starter) Eric Stults my circle change. It's lineage goes from Bob Gibson to Tim McCarver to me to Eric Stults.
It's all in the follow through.
The New Logo...
Oh Mama Mia (of Corona)...
This week's gourmet delight is from "Mama's Of Corona." Tucked away in the loge level this little gem served up a delishish turkey and mozzerala sandwich. What set this sandwich apart was the mushrooms and peppers.
How that mushroom got on my face I will never know.
Fiesta Latina...
Friday night at Shea was "Fiesta Latina" - The Mets celebrated with a postgame salsa concert...Below beauty pageant winners watched B.P.
And Of Course...
Ken Rosenthal...
This week I sat down with Ken Rosenthal for an emotional interview about his childhood days as a vendor for Jets games at Shea...The interview will appear in a later blog.
Don't forget to watch Kenny's interview with Dodgers All-Star catcher Russell Martin
And The Winner Is...
Ron Schmidt is the winner of this week's (and innagural) "Hat For A Stat" Contest. Ron took the prize with a "This Date in Baseball History":
On Aug. 25, 1985, Dwight Gooden (20 years, 9 monhts, 9 days) became the youngest 20-game winner in MLB history, clipping Bob Feller's record.
Congratulations Ron! Red or black hat? Mr. Met likes the Red...althought I think he was a little upset we didn't have his size.
It's never too early to start thinking about your stat for next week's Mets at Braves game.
I'd like to give special thanks to a guy/gril named Toliletfarm who was the first entrant. I'd also like to take special exception to Raliegh St. Claire who tried to dismiss the hats as "Rupert Murdoch's little trinkets."
Watch The Game...
Make sure you check out the Dodgers-Mets game today to see a special video clip of Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon (Turtle and Johnny Drama from Entourage)...you won't want to miss it.
Gratuitus Promo...
Check back in during the week for more useless information, pictures and video.
College and high school mascots are okay, but major league teams (MLB,NFL,NHL,NBA) shouldn't have them. They look ridiculous. If I were a Met fan, I'd want to get rid of Mr. Met. It's too 'bush-league'. C'mon, New York is too sophisticated for a mascot.
