Straight Talk From the Left Coast

Sports' most obnoxious/annoying fans
Apr 05, 2008 | 11:24AM | report this
You know what I am talking about. You go to a game and as a fan of the visiting team, you are subjected to some really unruly or obnoxious fans, rally cries or noisemakers that rattle your nerves. Some of the rally gear items are somewhat trivial, others are downright annoying. Sometimes, they are just lame. But all of these stomach-turning, gut-wrenching, ear-rattling rally-inspiring items or cheers are held dear to the heart of the obnoxious fan. He lives everywhere in the United States.

The list:

The Terrible Towel

It's a dish rag, it scares no one, and it blocks the view of the game. Moreover, isn't waving a towel the universal sign for "surrender"?

Give the inventor props for marketing a dishtowel and making a mint off of Steelers' fans. Suckers.

The Sacramento Kings' cowbells

Are you kidding me? I would rather drink two bottles of Cold Duck and deal with the hangover in the morning than to hear those tinny bells rattling in my ears for 2 hours. If you want to change your "Farmer John" image, what's with having 5,000 cowbells rattle in Arco Arena? MOOOOOO.

The Angels' Thundersticks

Someone 'splain to me why inflatable bats made in R.O.C. clapped together every ten minutes is a good idea? I pity the fans who miss every good play because they can't see the field due to plastic bats blocking their view of play. Get a bunch of PGA fans clapping softly and it's the same effect. It's the politically correct way of being loud.

Arkansas Razorbacks fans' "First Down" Signal (sorry, couldn't find a photo of a fan signaling first down for the Hogs)

Good to know ya'll know when it's a first down. It's pretty telling if you make a big deal out of a first down, but even more importantly, thank goodness you don't get a ton of these to make it totally unbearable for a visiting team's fans.

The USC Conquest song/"V" fingers sign.

Dum-de-dee-dum-dee-dee-dum-deeee- dum, de dum. OKAY....must you beat those drums for the entire duration of the game? The first beat has every Trojan fan automatically raising their hand with the 'V" sign, and frankly, it's borderline psychotic brainwashing.

(I love it!)

That dancing Leprechaun of Notre Dame.

Next time I visit South Bend, I'm taking out that red-bearded freak with a high-powered whiffle gun; is this what snipe hunting is? Why is he dancing a #### when his team got creamed most of the year? Because of him, I've sworn off Lucky Charms cereal.

The "D" "Fence" sign

It's getting old, isn't it? And as cliche as it is, why do cameramen always put them on TV?

Props to the guy who invented the light switch "Off" and "Fence" sign, where the "off" light switch turns on and off.

The Texas Longhorns' "Hook 'em Horns"

When you have a bunch of inebriated fans making that Horn sign, somehow, that middle finger seems to pop up too often. Then again, if all your fans looked like Matthew MacConaughey, who cares?

Philadelphia Eagles fans

Yeah, it's pretty bad when you have your own jail and court built into Veterans Stadium, isn't it? When you boo Santa Claus, its really hard to defend fans like the one pictured to the left. Not pretty, not pretty at all.

The Nittany Lions' "Zombie Nation"

Watching 90,000 fans jump and down mumbling "oh oh oh ####-oho-oh ####...." at Happy Vanilla Valley makes us wonder who spiked their brats with crystal meth. Maybe they are trying to wake up from the dull play on the field?

The UCLA 8-clap/fight song

"1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, U-C-L-A, UCLA, fight fight fight".....and what freaking high school cheer inspired that yell? Isn't it bad enough that you stole your fight song (in the 60's) from the California Bears' song "Big C, Sons of California"? And you mention another school in your own fight song? EMBARRASSING:

“Sons of Westwood”

We are Sons of Westwood,
And we hail the Blue and Gold;
True to thee our hearts will be,
Our love will not grow old.

Bruins roam the hills of Westwood,
By the blue Pacific shore;
And when they chance to see a man from USC,
Ev’ry Bruin starts to roar.

U! (3 claps)
C! (3 claps)
L! (3 claps)
A! (3 claps)

U-C-L-A! Fight! Fight! Fight

The Lakers theme song, "We Love LA"

Randy Newman was kewl in the 80's.....but for a city that's considered a trend-setter leader, how embarrassing is it to hear that song? Where are my leg warmers and ripped sweatshirt tops?

The dude with the rainbow wig holding the "John 3:16" sign in the end zone
.

Just who is this guy (Rollen Stewart), who does he work for (nobody, he is serving a life sentence for kidnapping), and just what is his track record converting football fans to Jesus (zip, nada, zilch)? And what's with the clown wig?

(special thanks to blogger BillyHoyle for informing about the identification of this "fan.")

Florida State Seminoles' Warpath chant

Ok, I'm still trying to figure out why your mascot is politically correct, but the Chippewas' mascot is not. The war chant sounded cool when your program was winning, IN THE 80's, but now it's a lame effort that sounds more like a Buddhist chant, than a warpath cry.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox fans

They are loud, obnoxious, and cheer on individual players making more than an entire Major League baseball team.
The Yankees thumbed their noses at the luxury tax with a payroll close to 200 mil, and yet, still lost to the Red Sox.

Ha ha.

and this lil dilly......

The Oakland Raiders get-ups

They sit in the Black Hole, throw beers down opponents' fans and teams' backs, and give headaches for security teams. And there is this: Robert Charles Comer, 50, was executed for the murder of a man and when asked if he had any last words, he said, "Yes. Go Raiders."

Auburn/LSU/Clemson fans

There's a huge argument over who called their stadium Death Valley first- LSU or Clemson. Clemson fans claim they did because they are next to a cemetery and that LSU's stadium area was called Deaf Valley; over the years, it morphed into Death Valley from mispronounciation and it stuck. Which team was first doesn't matter. All of them chanting, "Tiger Bait" and throwing beers at the other team's fans is pretty obnoxious behavior. The funny part is that the Tigers of LSU are named after an a Civil War regiment that had "tiger" rifles. When and why the LSU animal mascot came in remains perfect fodder for brawls amongst the fans.

Anaheim Ducks' duck call whistles and fight song

Sigh...ok, you are Ducks. But having 14,000 fans put their Duck bills on their faces and blow through some quacky noisemakers for "duck calls" is almost annoying as their fans singing, "We will, we will, quack you" to the tune of Queen's "We will rock you." Can you say overkill? Quack.

Per Dave_in_Indy, the following soccer fans have been added:

Soccer fans from any country that ends in "a" or any English team

When tear gas cannisters shooting at the fans are a normal event, you really have to wander when passion leaves the game and criminal negligence kicks in. 39 people died in one English soccer match in Brussels. It's a good thing soccer isn't big here in the states, I guess.

Duke basketball fans

OMG...is there any group of fans that has more sense of entitlement? Or smugger attitudes? Or more annoying antics than jumping up and down for for forty minutes and and doing that hand vibe thing? Admit it, you love the fact that they have exited the March Madness rounds early.

It's OK, you're not alone.

PS. Go Bruins, beat Memphis!

this is an absolutly incredible blog. these obnoxious fans make me wanna puke.

you should google rollen stewart. he wasn't limited to just football, interesting guy, interesting story. don't you live in LA? you musta missed this one.

Stewart was arrested in 1992 after a standoff in a California hotel during which he entered a vacant room with two men he was attempting to kidnap and surprised a chambermaid who then locked herself in the bathroom. Reportedly, Stewart believed that the Rapture was due to arrive in six days.[1] During the standoff, he threatened to shoot at airplanes taking off from nearby Los Angeles International Airport, and covered the hotel room windows with "John 3:16" placards.[3]

billy...is Stewart the same guy as the one in my blog? Wow..he is a nutcase. He was always at the USC games, and I think I saw him on TV at Raiders and Rams' games. He must have had a great job to afford all of those tickets. (I live halfway between LA and San Diego)

PS...don't take this blog too seriously...not all of the stuff is that bad....there was some humor in this. But some of them are pretty bad.

Nicely done Lisa. I know you know the history of the "Terrible Towel" Most don't know how it got its name tho. Years ago many steelers worked out in the baement of a local eatery. Towel that was used to wipe sweat stayed there, guys would say "give me that "terrible towel", just continued-Cope caught the name and........ Towel is now in possession of someone related to the restaurant or whatever. Weird, we all believe it does help.

Lisa,

GREAT topic.

Kings cowbells are just the worst, I went to a Laker game there once right behind the bench and had to pack my ears with tissue.

Actual health hazard wrt hearing loss!

Really HATE the FSU THING too, I have to cut the sound to watch any of their games.

Going international ...

Liverpool - England's worst - and that's saying something; that's saying a month's worth of somethings;

Any Central American soccer team - poultry or goat sacrifices outside the stadia anyone? referee sacrifices inside? Maybe the old-school Raider nation would survive a venture into a U.S. v. any central american nation's team match - but only if they're well armed (they usually are though, yes?); and,

Lazio (one of Romes two Serie A teams) - one end of the stadium is filled with swastika tattooed, chanting, flare throwing, black-shirted, flag waving self-proclaimed FASCISTS!

The terrible towel waving Pittsburgians pale in comparison.

dave in indy...nice to see you! Goat sacrifices? OK...that totally goes to the top of the list, and I gave you credit for that suggestion. Actually, I don't watch a lot of futbol, but do watch the WC and love Olympic soccer games; I can understand the "passion" from the Latin countries. It boggles the mind. Should we just put all of South America futbol fans under one giant header?

nba...the Kings fans are awful. I am sure they like it a lot, but I'm waiting for some Laker fan to sell a bunch of cowbells outside of Staples and start rattling those suckers behind the Kings bench and see how they like it.

ed...your schools are not annoying at all...they have good fans. Except for the Bruins 8 clap, of course.

Lisa,

You must hate LA...

Lakers, Angels, USC AND UCLA?

Why not crack on the organ player at Dodger Stadium, and the tribal drum beaters at the Kings hockey games? (which I attended today, lost to another So-Cal team, the Ducks) Hey..add the duck call to your list.
The "I LOVE L.A." song is classic. There are PLENTY of other songs that mention LA and surrounding areas, but those three words sum it all up quite nicely, thank you.
Why not mention the "Beat L.A." chants that happen EVERYWHERE? People hate LA because of jealosy. It has the best climate in the world, Playboy Bunnies everywhere, beaches, mountains, world class dining and entertainment, Vegas is a short jaunt away, the scenery is beautiful. It has it's problems with gangs and such, but it is also the most culturally diverse city in the world (maybe NY). No offense, but you hit home for me by having so many Southern California representitives.
Your blog says left coast..which city do you operate from? Because you sound like an east coast pundit to me.

I LOVE LA. (big nasty redhead at my side!)
The City of Angels.

Come now...you have to admit it.

Lisa...Your blogs are well written and although I am not a fan of most of the sports you write about,I do read them from time to time and gather from the comments of the majority of your readers, that they consider your points to be fair ones.

At the risk of being told to mind my own business,I'd like to suggest that you do a bit more research when including soccer in your blogs.

For every hooligan at a soccer match, there are 500 real fans who are only interested in enjoying the game and supporting their team.
The 39 deaths in Brussels which you referred to is known as the Heysel Stadium Disaster and it occurred 23 years ago.
There are very few incidents at English stadiums anymore and although there are a lot of problems in South America and Italy, they aren't quite as bad as Dave in Indy makes them out to be.I find it interesting that Lazio, the team and fans he seems to condemn as the worst, just happen to be traditionally the biggest rivals of AS Roma, the team Dave just happens to support.

Our sport does have a lot of problems and no real fan of football(soccer)would try to deny it.
The problem of hooliganism is being worked on and improvements are being made.

It does not help when persons who are unfamiliar with both the sport and its problems are given inaccurate information..IMHO

Lisa, get a clue. Violence in English football is almost extinct. That was over 20 years ago. They have made security improvements and went to all-seater stadiums in the early 1990's.

I figured you would be sympathetic to violence being from LA and everything. Rodney King. That was more recent than the English football violence, right?

Lisa H

Bridge...while I am NOT a fan of soccer, I do respect the game. However, and this is a big however, I have seen way too many riots at soccer games to think that the fans don't belong on this list. To put it into perspective...the Raiders are considered complete thugs, and they have had one notable incident of a death attributed to their fans...a Steeler fan. One death.

Soccer cannot claim that same statistic. Are ALL soccer fans hooligans? Of course not, just like all Raiders fans aren't bad, but their reputation precedes them, and there is that stigma.

Manu..I did not put that up just because DaveInIndy said what he said. I was thinking of putting it up, but I could not come up with just one team to put up. So he said English teams, and I said teams with an "a". Like I told Bridge, I am sure you are a civil fan, but there are many soccer fans who are not, and many deaths have resulted from that mentality.

This section about soccer, is a very sad indictment of what Americans think they know about something.
It would be as ignorant of me walking into a nuclear physics convention and saying ' well I know the bomb makes a big noise when it goes off '

Hooliganism is not something that plagues football stadiums around the world, 39 people dies in belgium for all the wrong reasons. That was an awful long tme ago.
To use that as an example of English football is really misguided.
Why dont we use the racist hring principles of the NFL from the waybackwhen machine and use it to identify NFL today.

Does not work like this.

King Ade

What youthink you have seen Lisa, is far too many reruns of far too mnay old scenes rehashed to hit the non fan over the head.
I could put together a 20 minute video of all the violence of any sport and make it seem that a sport is particularly bad.
What you see reshashed is not indivitive of football.
Hooligan behaviour is virtually non existant in Englsih football.
Thuggish behaviour is not tolerated and the sentence is often draconian.
Breach of the peace in the US is often a fine, in England it can 60 days in jail, and a ban from the sport nationwide forever.

You really have the wrong end of the stick.

BridgeWarriors

I could not have said it better myself ADE, what Americans think of punishment for obnoxious behaviour in sports is often not tolerated in the grouds around the world these days. particularly not England as they try to appeal to a wider audience.
The police measures are draconian compared to the USA, I am glad you mentioned that Ade.

It is a shame that Americans will take 10 second sound bites or video clips pieced together and watch a few flares going off and say ' wow look at that violence.'

Misguided.

Scottstradamus/King/Bridge...copy and pasted for your reading pleasure:

At Euro 2000, the England team was threatened with expulsion from the tournament, due to the poor behaviour of the fans. Despite hooliganism declining domestically, death threats by English hooligans have become more common in the 2000s. Rio Ferdinand was the target of death threats from Leeds United fans, as was Peter Ridsdale. Swedish referee Anders Frisk quit his position after receiving death threats from Chelsea F.C. fans. Reading players Ibrahima Sonko and Stephen Hunt also received death threats from Chelsea fans in 2006. A steward died after serious clashes between firms from Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers after a Carling Cup game in September 2004

The stuff that you just copied and pasted in utter nonsense. It is all taken out of context and so easy to understand why the non football fan actually get sconfused.

The England team were not threatened with being expelled from Euro 2000. thats just nonsense. That was a a lot of common boloney that came from our own Sports minister as a warning that bad behaviour would not be tolerated.
It was not a result of any particular incident that happened. This is European Governments such as in England and Holland having a fear that certain elements of society namely the neo fascists decide to use Football as an excuse to cause trouble.
Anders frisk had an anonomous letter, like happens to every coach, every sports fan in the world. Ask how many death threats the NFL players and refs get ! NFL death threats are huge in number they are so common, we dont talk about them.

Considering Football real football swamps all American sports in size and popularity and popyulation densities across the world are far higher than in the USA, you are citing only incidents that would be on a per population matching basis.

One of the biggest problems is simply this, Football in the World is controlled by the same media compnay's that have a resultant effect if ratings are bad.
They are the ones who report the nonsense to pressure the Governments to crack down.
So Football is safe.
Just look at the media hype for manchester fans last CL, against Roman where italian riot police beat up innocent fans as a method of crowd control.

Lisa...I don't know of any death threats that resulted in even an attempt, but as I said in my earlier post,no one is denying that there are problems but they are blown out of proportion by the media.

One or two idiots send death threats and the media makes it sound as if a mob was howling for blood.
Yes there are occasional riots and even deaths. No true soccer fan is proud of those facts but for every one incident, the media (and the uninformed who know soccer mainly through the media)tend to give the impression that riots and deaths at soccer matches are a regular occurrence.

For every NFL game played in America, there are probably 500 professional soccer matches being played world wide on a daily basis.
How many soccer riots or soccer deaths do you hear about on a daily basis.

Lisa H

Bridge...why do you think I am a soccer hater?...I am not. I appreciate the simplicity of the sport (two nets and a field) and the passion the fans have for the game. HOWEVER, EVERY YEAR THERE ARE GAMES THAT GET OUT OF CONTROL. You cannot deny that.

Please cite me for me a death threat that one NFL player has received from another? That action would dictate complete dismissal from a team, and possible civil litigation. Are you actually serious with that statement?
