We, the organization of the Oakland Raiders, wish to secede from the NFL and go out on our own. We no longer to wish to participate in your so-called league. You have taken all the fun out of playing the game, and made this once proud organization the laughingstock of organized sport.
Our reasons are varied, and listed below.
1- We used to be the bad guys of the NFL. Heck, our entire AFC West division used to have the motto, "where real men play." Now it's just a Sunday play date for other teams to beat us up. We used to hock loogies on players, throw dirt in their faces, and get into fights. We made cheap shots on the quarterback, and it was all fair play. Now, if we don't say "excuse me" after we sneeze, it's a yellow flag and a fifteen-yard penalty. Everything has become politically correct.
What happened to the mean game of twenty years ago? What happened to ripped jerseys? Your league made them tear-away so we couldn't throw running backs to the ground. What happened to psychological warfare tactics? Smack is no longer tolerated. What happened to stick-um up to our elbows? Enter corporate logo'd golf gloves. What happened to decking the quarterback if he had the ball in the pocket? Your league made us count the steps we are allowed to take before he releases the ball or we get the yellow hankie. We have news for you, Roger. We don't like counting anything but broken bones after we hit the field.
2- You have made the game a show, instead of a competition. Except for Joe Willy, none of us players ever cared about how we looked on the field. Now we see diamond studs the size of walnuts on players' ears, and our wives are complaining about their rocks not being big enough. We see players changing their last names to Spanish numbers to get more attention. We see players wearing sequined HOF jackets after only being in the league a few years. We see players hiding Sharpies in their socks and cell phones behind the goal posts. We see players with diamond-encrusted teeth who get tackled, and the tackler ends up helping that player look for his teeth on the field after the play. WTF???If a player ever danced on our mid-field logo, that was grounds for a fight, and the crowd loved it. Now we stand there pointing to refs to call a flag, like that's going to make us feel more manly. It's no longer about being a team. It's about individual showmanship. You have wimp-sized us to the point that even soccer players are now viewed as tougher than us.
3- Our fans are officially more feared than us. Been to Philly lately? The Black Hole? There's a reason why our fans are getting rougher, Roger. It's because we have gotten wimpier due to your leadership. Someone has to pick up the slack. If a team doesn't fear us, maybe our fans will get under their skin.
4- The game used to be a place where we could act out on our testosterone. We vomited before games because we were so nervous. We bit other players in the pile, spit on them unmercifully, taunted them at the line, stepped on them on purpose and hit receivers well after the overthrown ball landed behind them because we weren't watching to see if the ball was in their hands, we were taking advantage of decking the receivers. But since we can't do any of that anymore, many players have taken their hormones out into society. We used to be able to hit on the cheerleaders, and now even that's verboten. Think we're ticked?
You think those misfits would be getting into fights, doing drugs and breaking the law if they had an outlet to vent their hormonal rages? Football used to be that outlet. But now, we have to be polite on the field. It was coming Roger, you just didn't see it. What once was a place to flex our muscles is now just a social gathering. The Boy Scouts have more intense outings than we do.
No one cares about the game anymore. They care about endorsements. They care about what kind of car they drive, They care about not getting hurt. We used to play with broken bones every Sunday. Now, if a player gets a hangnail, he's on the stationery bike to work out the pain. They care about their hairstyle and wardrobe. We used to show up for camp with a "I can't wait to start playing" attitude. Now, players don't show up if their agent feels they are underpaid by a few mil. You have wimped us out and now we are taking our anger to the streets. It used to be if we acted up, we had to sit-out a game, the ultimate torture for a real player. Now, we give more and more chances for the Players' Union to actually earn some of their salaries by defending us when we act up. And give us more chances to act up. Our third-grade teachers showed more discipline than your so-called Personal Conduct Policy.
5- The league used to be a place where the entire reason why you played was for the love of the game. Now it's just a cash-cow for thugs. The whole point of the game was to be the last man standing. Now it's about selling the most jerseys, and being the lucky team who gets chosen to play for wimpy English fans who don't appreciate the game of football, all for the globalization of the NFL. It's all about money now. Why did you have to pick a tea and crumpets country that is renown for politeness? Why couldn't you have picked a place like Iraq? Our servicemen would have loved the opportunity to see us play in a hostile environment. If they can handle it, why can't we?
6- Our management sucks. We have an owner who goes after sexy players instead of rough and tumble players. He wears white leisure suits and diamond-encrusted rose-#### glasses. Our CEO is a woman! More political-correctness. Our fans can't buy single-season tickets to the Chargers games in San Diego because the Chargers want to minimize the danger-factor. Meanwhile, Pac-Man Jones has made a deal with the devil and gets to play again. Our once-proud image of bad boys is now better represented by Johnny Depp's character in Pirates of the Caribbean. The Silver and Black Attack is now gray. "Just win, baby" is no longer meaningful in the NFL, and has been replaced by "Show me the money."
In short, we can't do this anymore. We refuse to be a part of this league. When was the last time one of our players was arrested? It's downright embarrassing. The Bengals have beaten everyone to the punch, and have become the new misfits of the NFL. It used to be us, now it's them. We can't compete with them. While they are wimps on the field, they are monsters on the street. We are monsters on the field, but wimps in society. And who gets more press? They do.
One player abuses dogs and is sent to prison. Another is involved in a shooting that paralyzes someone and he gets to play. A baseball team is caught with blow-up dolls in their clubhouse, and everyone is shocked. It's their clubhouse. Boys will be boys. Quit emasculating them. A team gets caught videotaping play signals and everyone is in an uproar. Yeah, like nobody else steals signals? Think there is a reason why coaches hold laminated play sheets over their mouths when calling in plays? Why two bench-warmers surround the play-caller when he calls in the plays? We cheat. It's part of the game, and now there's a big stinking Federal case over it. Why can't you just let the teams settle their problems on the field. Where it used to belong?
The rules have changed, and we no longer wish to be part of this fiasco. We would rather play a real game in a local Oakland park, without pads. The point of the game has escaped you Roger. But not us. We've still got some fight left in us, despite your attempts to quell it.
It's time to leave a sinking ship when players are known more for their off-the-field antics than on-the-field feats.
Truer words were never spoken...except when Noll stated something about the "crimnal element" in the NFL with Oakland in mind. It was always a hard fought game...with Jack "Vampire" Lambert and the rest up against like members of the Raiders.....ah well...progress, no more cavemen except at GEICO.
Rev....the Raiders have some Super Bowl championships too. A lot more than the Bucs. (3-1 baby) And you had to steal our coach in order to win one against us. Another reason why we want to secede. You took advantage of our senile owner. UGH. :P
Money...I love my Raiders. I'm not happy with Al. He's losing' it. He should have drafted a DE first. Oh well. I'm sure Fargas is real happy with D-Mac getting drafted...not. I used to chat with Justin's mom...a sweet woman. He got so dinged up, but still kept up the intensity....now he's a Raider. Huggy Bear is da bomb.
ramp...sorry to delete you but you blew my blog up with the Travolta pic. :(
Yeah Rev. Without Gruden, the Bucs wouldn't have won. Heck I pretty sure you know that Gruden before the Super Bowl was imitating Rich Gannon showing how he would play since he taught him to play the way he did. The players admitted to that saying that what the coach did was exactly what Gannon did. That's why the Bucs had five INTs.
They do.
I agree that we have been homogenized as Raiders.... I will tell you what though, I forsee a whole different Raider team coming this season.... new attitudes, a young and dynamic coaching staff (except ryan who you know i dont like), and a team of people out to be the best they can be instead of just a check grabber.(see justin fargas)...
Oh and i forgot... i was like you, a bit upset at the signing of mcfadden....vs a DE... well i have been convinced that putting up points and putting the other team behind, will cause them to pass more,,, and you know how good our passing d will be.. also our d line will be healthy and will perform very well.... also if the new MLB is healthy and plays like he is capable (ray lewis like) then our d will be very very good...
also mcfadden can play wideout... alll of his talents are similar to reggie bush in college at usc and you know how well kiffin did with leinhart (an average qb) and bush... you will see some dynamic play calling with our young (russell, bush, mcfadden, and miller) backfield and of course the effort and "raider" running of fargas.... going to be special lisa, mark my words...
kid...we need to get our swagger back. But beating the Chargers would be a nice start!
deh...there are rumors that Gruden knew all the plays the Raiders would call. Everybody cheats...the only diff between the Pats and everyone else is that the Pats immortalized it on celluoid. D'oh!
It all depends on the war in the trenches, though. You can have deer in the backfield, but if there is still a forest of trees blocking their way, they won't see any open field to frolic on.
My beef is this. The Raiders used to stand for tough, physical football. The NFL has wimped them out by making all of these lame rules.
So now we have the players taking it to the streets. The Raiders have been good about their off-the-field antics...they do charity fundraisers for kids, etc...but now they look like wimps because of the idiots in Cincy, for example.
My team has been emasculated and I'm ticked about it.
Dear Raiders,
Don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.
Please take Detroit and Cincy with you.
Bwooo-Haaaa-Haaaaa! Sorry about that.
You're making this too easy for me to sell L.A. a franchise at a discount.
By the way, did you enjoy your $1 in damages from a couple decades back. Has that balooned into a retirement fund yet?
You're so right Lisa...one of the biggest reasons the Raiders were good was because they were "feared". they had an image that somehow got lost. I'm sure deep down Howie Long is upset that his son wasn't chosen by the Raiders. I believe he would've brought some of that bad boy toughness back. Sapp tried to hold that tradition but no one else followed suit...
i just thought of something lisa??? is it the LA raiders???? or oakland raiders??? or did al completely lose his mind and move to oregon????????? oooooogodddddddddddddddd!!!!
Hey Lisa I'm not surprised because of that. Let me explain. Remember Gruden just got fired the previous year by the Raiders. So not much changes in one season of players habits. He had made Gannon to who he was so of course he would know how Gannon would act. Also the stealing signals part is true but depends. I remember Sports Illustrated during the Spygate Saga (I use this as a way to say overblown) having an article of what multiple coaches did to get an advantage over an opponent. Gruden will solve plays during the preseason against the teams he played against so he could use them in the regular season. To counteract, the teams would run fake plays to throw him off guard.
The good old days of the NFL are long gone. Even as a Jet fan who could forget and not cheer for Ben Davidson smashing through the Jet OLine, grabbing Joe Willie and slamming Joe Willie's head into his own chest before tossing him aside like a rag doll. Great moment.
From the right coast " HELL YEAH" tell em like it is. I used luv the Raiders but I can't until they redeem themselves. I hope in their new league they'll be like the Raiders of old that we used to love to hate.
The DET Lions should also seceed from the NFL as well. In this case for competion purposes They want to join the college ranks. This is the only way the will ever be over .500 (thanks Jon Kitna)Your heart is huge and you take a lickin' and keep on tickin'- but 10 wins- not as funny this time. GET REAL_FIRE MILLEN_and wins wil slowly follow, but not until the worst pres. in all of sports is fired.
yes--the afc west was much more fun when the raiders put a better team on the field. unfortunately--that may not happen again until the old man gives up control. he's taken the wind out of "just win baby" and made the raiders the most indecisive, boring, and unable to compete any longer--not this commish or the one before him. al davis has taken away our reason to "hate" the raiders and the joy out of games within the afc west.
anthony (my misguided charger friend) and george (my long lost raider friend) and i were recently disussing the need in not only the west, but in the league--for the raiders to return to some sort of excellence. without them playing well--we have no villains. we have t.o., we have ocho-stinko, but we have no team that everyone can universally love or hate. it's hard to get george (raider fan) to show-up and watch games anymore--he chooses instead to watch them alone. that seems what al davis has done to that team and fans. he's put you all in the closet. hopefully--when he's "caught" and you all are released there will be someone out there with the "ballz" to create some havoc in and out of that organization.
draft picks like d-mac are not the direction that franchise needs to be going in......looking forward to monday "opening" night--hopefully both teams can play with some of that "old" emotion--hate for each other and love of the game--and give the nfl a peek at what used to be.....
Good article...I just don't see how it's completely Goodell's fault? He's only been commissioner for 1 full season? I would say that Tags is the reason for all of the stuff you talk about. Other than that...good read.
the raiders haven't been monsters on the field in quite a while. the way I see it is they are wimps on and off the field. quit complaining and adapt. hey we suck to!! but we will get over it.
My mistake Aero. He didn't get fired. But my main point was that Gruden just left the Raiders so one season even with a different scheme cannot change QB habits.
Lisa you are right on with this as far as the League getting wimpy, but the Raiders are not doing anything to bring back their swagger. I attend 1 Raider game a season, I live in Oregon, and consistently see a team that is in dire need of the old school mentality. Too bad they are over paying for mediocre talent and have 4 or less defensive players that would qualify as bench warmers on the 70's and 80's Raider squads. In short, the Raiders have disqualified themselves from the league as much as the league has gone to tea and crumpets.
Not a Raider fan, actually a Browns fan, but some of your points are relevent for football as a whole. I definitely long for the good ole days where football was the sport for real men. Where football players had a grill more reminiscent of Dracula than a jewelry store. Where it was not uncommon for a player to play with broken bones because they feared losing their jobs to the young back up. Where the league understood that a touchdown was a major accomplishment and didn't penalize somebody for spiking the ball too hard. I long for the days back when you got physically blasted by a member of the opposing team after you did a grandstand on their logo and the official just walked by and said "you know you deserved that". Where linebackers could strike fear into the receivers going over the middle because they knew they would get drilled regardless of whether they caught the pass or not. It feels good to see somebody else misses the old (real) NFL. Thank you. I don't feel so alone now.
Between Pacman and Tank (wonder why those two don't use their real names...) we have more weaponry than the national armies of most third world countries.
If only Jerry would let Chris Henry join, we'll have somebody that will regularly be drunk enough to use those weapons on the field!
Really, I do miss the days when the uniform wasn't a dress that players would cry about if it got dirty.

Used to when we went to Cleveland there were dawg fights in the stands. Now you send people to prison for fighting dawgs.
Great Rant.
LOL!!! Sorry, I had to reply to this. I can tell your trips were before the old Browns moved to Baltimore. As soon as we got our team again they did everything they could to make sure that there would not be a recreation of the old Dawg Pound. That is what everybody was waiting for. All these Browns fans up here were looking for that weekend release of uncivilized cheering now handcuffed. It was amazing to feel the energy in the stands back then. Since the new stadium hit I remember sitting in the stands and hearing somebody's ring drop and the whole section created a search party to find it. That is a nice gesture, but it certainly wouldn't of happened in the old Stadium.
as a die hard raider fan, i agree with this 100% its a shame the way they have taken the "fun" out of football. and i miss the "if they aren't bleeding you didn't hit them hard enough" raiders
I agree completely dehbashi, the Raiders had a good team back then, they just had some bad breaks. They got robbed in the snow against the Patrots, then had to face their old coach when they did make it to the big game.
glad to see my fellow fans, for the most part, feel the same way....where's Howard Cosell and Dandy Don?....I want the real talk and not this PC stuff going on...even if I was too young to even really experience those two, I studied them in broadcasting, and they were a riot.
To be able to have the mean / bad guy image again they have to be a good team again first. If you do all that stuff while you stink you just end up looking like a sore loser. When they did it when they were good it was intimidating to their opponents. Al has to go away for them to have a decent chance at becoming a great team again.
Lets get back to real football. Let the boys play. want to see some ral football being played. let the boys be boys i say you are right cannot touch a quaterback because he cries foul thats the name of the game let them play real ball again
man you raider fans sure do like to live in the past i mean it is important to a teams history but you have to look ahead to a bright future (except of course for the raiders) and how can you blame the game for how it has changed back years ago some of the NFLs greatest players never fully got to finish their careers becasue of the way the game WAS played and how can you blame Goodell he hasnt been commisioner for that long and what has he done wrong told players with bad rap sheets to go and not to come back and encouraged good behavior and dont blame goodell because OAKLAND BITES you know if you guys won sometimes your fans would get scarier. the game of football has changed but change is not always a bad thing
Never has an English NFL follower been so insulted! We appreciate the sport so much we could have filled Wembley Stadium 11 times over! And that was with British interest alone! Some of us follow it as passionatly as you guys! Im a Patriots fan and i tell you.. there were plenty of Patriots jerseys at the game. Yet i saw not one Raiders jersey. And i think its down to their bad image from the past. Ive seen the Raiders of old.. and they are thugs! And 'tea and crumpets'???? Jesus H Chirst! Where the hell did you get that one?!?! Thats the image of elitists.. not us everyday working folk!
boo hoo!!!who stole your coach??hewas fired and it came back 2 haunt them,it didnt matter, dungy still would have won that game if gruden was theraiders coach, they were just great!!!
its very funny 2 me the raider players didnt make any excusses!!in theyre post game interviews, they knew they were beaten physically, mentally ,emotionally, made no excuses!! it was the fans that did the crying, even rioting 80 arrests were made,i guess they really showed the bucs a lesson!! lets destroy our own city!!! really smart
i do beleve the raiders r building a good team now,i actually going to the oak/panthers game 2 cheer on the raiders!! sorry panthers, your div. rivals 2 the bucs got 2 have them win,go raiders!!
