I've been to my fair share of sporting events from Blackhawks games to DePaul games to the NCAA tournament, but nothing compares to a baseball game at Wrigley, especially Opening Day.
I was lucky enough to get a ticket from a good friend for Opening Day and it wasn't even a question about missing school--my parents didn't get why I even asked for permission. When I woke up that day and saw it was cloudy and windy and barely 40 degrees, I wasn't phased--maybe you didn't read, this was Opening Day at Wrigley. So I obviously have to take the L to the game and the excitment is building. Outside Wrigley is covered with Cub fans and those selling anti-Cardinal and anti-White Sox shirts. But the best part was walking up the steps to my seats. After 5 months of no baseball, to get to walk up those steps and see the ivy and the scoreboard and the hundreds of already-drunk Cub fans, it felt like it was 70 degrees and sunny--that's how happy I was.
So luckily for me it was a splendid opening day for the Cubs, they seemed like a new team, and played eerily similar to the way the White Sox played last year...if only the starters stay healthy.
if you're a sports fan, you need to see a Cub game at Wrigley. I once went to a game on Rosh Hashanah. I happened to be the bat boy that day and it happened to be their doubleheader sweep of the Pirates that led to their Diviision championship. It was one of the greatest days of my life and people asked my parents why they let me go on a JEwish holiday, but being at Wrigley that day, I think that was religion enough for me.
Wrigley is ugly. I haven't been there, but I've been to some of the other supposedly beautiful ballparks like Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, and the only thing going for them is the history; they're both ugly ballparks otherwise.
I think it's time to close down the deteriorating Wrigley Field and catch up with the times.
Of course... I loved Veterans Stadium... because I live in Philly. =/
UltraMega- You are like the Grinch who stole Christmas. I thought I was the most cynical #### in the world until I read some of the things you've said in the past and in your comments.
This is a high school kid writing about what a wonderful time he had at Wrigley. Maybe your just jealous that Chicago has a stadium that people actually want to come to and where a sitting judge isn't there to help prosecute a certain team's fans. Catch up with the times? Excuse me. A lot of stadiums are going back in time to model themselves after Wrigley. With the beautiful skyline and the different nooks and crannies.
Thank you for inspiring my post that's coming up later tonight that will highlight why Wrigley is the most beautiful park of them all.
thanks jr cuss for the support. so what if wrigley isn't nice and high-tech, that's not what baseball, our national pasttime, is all about. it's about the history and passion for the game and no better stadium resembles that than wrigley.
I'm all for the opening day pageantry and the wide-eyed look of a teenager. I'm into the history of the Cubs and the game. I've also been to Wrigley more times than I can count. Kevo, I appreciate your feelings, but......
UltraMeg makes valid points and I would echo them. JrCuss could also give some info about "Cub" fans behavior at the games. We could all bash the happy taste out of your mouth, but you will learn about these things on your own.
Take a drive up 94 and go catch a Cubs/Brewers game. This is an experience. Tickets range from $5-80, parking $6-12. Yes, I said parking, really they have actual parking for $6. People are friendly, people who work there are friendly, and most people don't swear. A family atmosphere, also, the food is pretty good too.

My name is Kevin and I'm a sophomore studying journalism at Northwestern University. I've been a die-hard sports fan all my life, and I'm also one of those hated Cubs and White Sox fans (that's just how I was raised, to be a both fan). I'm also a huge Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks fan. My favorite sports, however, because of its pagentry and passion, are college sports and I'm a huge Northwestern and DePaul fan.
