We’re heading into the final six days of the NBA regular season and the fog is beginning to clear.
What we know for sure is the top three seeds in the East are set, with the Celtics guaranteed the top seed through the Finals if they get there, with the Pistons locked into the second seed and the Magic at No. 3. It’s the 4-5 matchup – always the best one anyway – that starts getting a bit dicey.
The Cavs have lost five of their last eight games, LeBron James is playing with a strained back, and their lead has dwindled to two games over the rapidly getting healthy and hot Wizards, who have won three of four upon the return of Gilbert Arenas – although he sat out the middle game since it was a back-to-back. The defending Eastern Conference champion Cavs have eliminated the Wizards in the first round of the past two seasons, a sweep last year and a seven-game thriller in 2006.
It won’t be easy for the Wizards to gain home-court, however, considering the Cavs have a two-game lead, but Washington does have the tie-breaker by virtue of a better conference record. The Wiz play at Detroit, followed by the Sixers and Pacers coming in to town, and they finish the season at Orlando. The Cavs are at Chicago, play host to the Heat, travel to Philly, and end the season at home with the Pistons.
The other tough one is the Pacers trying to catch the Hawks for the final playoff spot with a two-game deficit as well. The Pacers did win the season series for the tie-breaker, but they play at Philadelphia, play host to Charlotte and travel to Washington before ending the season at home with the woeful Knicks.
But the West has been more interesting all along with the top and bottom of the playoff chart still not settled. Just 2.5 games separate the top six teams, and it’s impossible to really dissect how much seeds matter because they all have winning records on the road except Utah. Despite having clinched the Northwest Division, the Jazz has a worse record than both the Rockets and Suns, which would cost them the home-court advantage in any meeting. And that’s particularly significant in their case when you consider they have the best home record of any team at 35-4, but are 17-23 on the road, and no team with a losing road record during the regular season has ever won an NBA title.
It didn’t help that they lost at Dallas Thursday night on Dirk Nowitzki’s 3-pointer with less than a second left. That game clinched a playoff spot for the Mavs, who have rebounded from a horrid slump to win three in a row and four of five – three of those wins against the top tier of the West – since Nowitzki returned from a sprained ankle and strained knee. So that’s seven teams, with the eighth team slowly coming into view.
It was just two weeks ago the Warriors battered the Mavs, Nowitzki was down for an undetermined period of time and they appeared to have the seventh spot sewn up. Since then, it’s been straight downhill – losing four of six to and falling to ninth - the capper coming last night in Oakland. The Nuggets came from 17 down in the first quarter and pulled away late for a nine-point win behind their All-Stars Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony, with explosive bench-gunner J.R. Smith the X-factor once again. The win gave the Nuggets a one-game lead for the eighth seed and the series tie-breaker over the Warriors with three to play.
The Nuggets (17-22 on the road) travel to Utah Saturday, then finish up at home with the Rockets and toothless Grizzlies.
As for the Warriors, coming just a year after making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years and pulling off one of the biggest upsets in NBA history when they knocked off the top-seeded Mavs, they are in trouble. Captain Stephen Jackson, so vital all season averaging better than 20 points, has fallen off the map during the past six games. Jackson has averaged just 11.0 points in the tailspin, shooting just .289 (22-of-76) from the field and .206 (7-of-34) from 3-point range. Besides, to go along with 4.1 assists, he’s averaging 3.0 turnovers. Fortunately for the Warriors, two of the last three are at home against the Clippers and Sonics, but in between they play Phoenix.
Are they about to be the best team record in history to not qualify for the playoffs?
It may look that way, but rarely has there been an NBA season where appearances have been more deceiving – remember, it was just last week the Nuggets scored 147 points and lost to the 18-win Sonics. All we know for sure is by Wednesday night, this will all be settled.
Logic says the Celtics and the Pistons are on a collision course for the East finals, but there is no logic when it comes to the West, where all the teams – including the defending champion Spurs – are flawed to a certain extent.
And that’s why just the concept of the playoffs beginning a week from Saturday is stirring … particularly in the West, any of the five or six have a shot at winning it. As everybody knows, it’s all about the matchups.
If any of the teams in the west would play consistent defense, they would emerge as the favorite.
Jazz are getting closer, but if you have played the game they did, miracle bank-shot three to tie at 94-all and have to leave someone open for a shot to win the game, WHY would it EVER be Dirk Nowitski? He was completely open, terrible defense on the part of the Jazz.
The Jazz road record is deceptive, they have done very well against teams with winning records. They are the only west contender to have won in Boston this season. Right now, they are looking like the best in the west.

Don't sleep on the Rockets. It'll be hard for any team out west to play against their defense for a whole 7 game series. If Tracy McGrady starts taking over games, and starts posting up the smaller guys that will be guarding him, they'll be tough to beat.
After a long hiatus away from bball I became a fan again this year but one thing is for certain, I can't watch the Lakers games. This probably happens with other players but I can't watch Kobe, it is sickening to me to watch a player throw a hissy-fit anytime he shoots the ball and thinks he got fouled. I had to turn the game off because it was soooo embarassing. Do alot of the other players do this so frequently or is it one of Kobes trademarks?
Really evilroot73? You should probably continue that hiatus from bball. If you can't watch the best bball player on the planet then you really are crazy. It's not just me saying that, its the players themselves that agree with that notion. Yes, complaining when he gets fouled is a "trademark" of his, that doesn't even make sense. Yes, if you weren't on a long hiatus from bball, you'd realize players complain, especially star players. Just change the channel and watch the food network.
There are a lot of players that whine now, partially because it tends to work for many of the stars. If you really want to see a player whine every play, offense or defense, just watch the Spurs. In particular, watch Tim Duncan. If he shoots, especially if he misses, he whines. Kobe is pretty bad, which is why he leads the league in technicals, but to me, no one is worse than Duncan.
kobe is the best player in the game today, but i agree, his constant crying and complaining gets old. too many times he'll get the ball stripped or miss a shot then hop up and down yellign at the refs while the opposing team runs down the court with a man advantage becuase kobe is still back complaining. he should know better than that.
am i the only laker fan that thinks mihm should be getting more playing time, especailly in blow out wins like last night against the clips? did everyone forget that he's a capable center that can give you about 13pts and 8-10 rebounds per game when healthy. i think the lakers should be tyring to get him back up to form more aggressively, especially here in the west - the land of the giants. anyways, just a thought, someone run with it.
oh, i've heard a few commentators saying no one wants to play the suns in teh first round becuase they're starting to play well with shaq. if i were the lakers i'd want the suns first round for sure. this season we've dominated them, and we have the most at stake emotionally with them as they've sent us home in the first round 2 years in a row now. just please dont put gasol on shaq on the defensive end, shaq will injure him. if the lakers get to play the suns in round one i say lakers in 5, no problems.
Whining, complaining, crying; none of it bothers me one bit. Duncan and Bryant are competitors, and they want to win them all, excellent. If their "crying" is getting them to the stripe or making a ref think twice about whistling them for a foul, more power to them and any other player that can produce that kind of an advantage.
ericsti,
I too want the Suns in the first round! I'm begging for it. Like you said, they sent the Lakers packing two years in a row and haven't given the Lakers much o####ame this season. Plus, Kobe sending Shaq home? Love it!
I'm a Nuggets fan but I have to agree the Jazz look pretty good. I think they have a shot to go pretty far. My team is too inconsistent but they're fun to watch.
who cares if they whine, so what. we don't have to hear it. thats part of the game. it's a business where winning counts and second place is for losers. every advantage you can get, get it, because the other teams will do the sme to you.
Go Rockets!
In my opinion, Houston, Utah and New Orleans plays the best defense in the West. Defense wins championships right? If Utah wasn't so sluggish on the road, more people would be talking about them winning the West. But being a Tracy McGrady fan (former Magic) I have to root for Houston to come out of the West on top....
ATTITUDE70, you are a gentlemen and a scholar sir. I see you are an intelligent man of course. I don't think the Lakers are as good as people think. I think if the Rockets meet thim, they will prevail. also, nice outfit.
I won't "service your drive-shaft" like ramo, your post is good, but I can't believe you left San Antonio out of the "best defense in the West" conversation.
The Spurs, in my opinion, are the most fascinating team going into the playoffs. Are they really showing their age? Are they finally done? Or does Pop and Company know that the seeding and home court advantage this year are not going to have much influence on who represents the West in the Finals?
I think they're playing possum. I'm hoping the Lakers don't draw them until the Conference Finals.
El Gallo...Careful what you wish for...The Lakers have taken the series this year, but, I have to say, the Suns ARE a better team now. And in turn, the Lakers are exactly the same team, and playing so-so right now.
I would love that first round match-up also. Dont think its going to be as easy as most of you Laker fans think...as a matter of fact, I say the Suns beat them again...But, as a Suns fan, what would you expect.
However, I dont see them playing the first. I think the Suns will move up in the Standings winnig out. And since the Lakers, Spurs, and Hornets all still have these end of the year match-ups, its not going to happen. But, they should get their chance possibly in the 2nd round.
Ramogriff...I appreciate your compliments, I just call them like I see them. The Rockets are streaky and the Jazz are hellacious at home. All of these Laker fans think the finals are a gimme for them but Kobe has a LOT of work ahead of him.
Elgallo...no disrespect to the current NBA champions Spurs but I left them out of the defensive conversation simply because I think they are aging. They have had some bad losses this year, very uncharacteristic of them. I don't think there's any gas left in their tank. Besides, who wants to see another boring NBA finals with the Spurs and Pistons?....except Spurs/Pistons fans.
Yeah I'm a Warriors fan and last night wasn't good for us. That being said I can't be mad if we end up with 49-50 wins and miss the show because it was a great year. Any other year they would be 4, 5, or 6 seed. Get real with everything, every team is to inconsistent come playoff time except 1. Unfortunatley the boring Spurs will win it all again. I hate to say it but they just get it done!
Congrats Denver, you just earned a first round exit in the playoffs. The Warriors weren't going to make much noise this year either. In the West it'll be between the Spurs, Lakers and Suns.

I hate you. There. I'm not only a Lakers fan, but a Dodgers fan too, so your name and comments are atrocious. :) With that said, I'll agree with you that a majority of Lakers fans think the Western crown is a lock. Me? I don't see any team, other than the Nuggets (maybe) that I really want to play in any round.
I won't go as far as you and say the Suns are a better team now, if comparing them to the Lakers, but they are playing a lot better now than I expected after the trade. Shaq is Shaq, and as much as I despise his attitude and work-ethic, he has found a way to fit into the Suns system, and the team is playing good ball. Hopefully Bynum will bounce back and pick up were he left off (doubtful) and allow the Lakers to slide Gasol and Odom down a spot to create one hell of a starting line-up. In reality, its asking a lot from a 20 year old kid, coming off of his first big injury, and heading into what looks to be the most competitive Western Conference playoffs ever.
Good luck to you and the Suns. Although I hardly mean it.
ATTITUDE70,
I won't disagree on the "boring Finals" remark, but I still think the Spurs are playing possum. Talent wise, they improved from last year, they have the most playoff experience, they have a great coaching staff, they have the motivation to prove that they can repeat, and even during their worse stretch they knew they'd clinch a playoff spot.
If I were behind that squad, I'd ask for about 80% effort in these final games, and rest my aging starters and roll players as much as po
El Gallo...Well, at least you are honest. :) I too wish everyone good luck, but in the end, I want the Suns to destroy whoever gets in the way.
And, dont count the Dodgers out just yet. I still think they have a really good shot at the Wildcard... :) Yes, I do think the DBacks have a good chance, but thought I would throw that one in there.
But hey, good luck to you and your Lakers also.... :)
Take care.

Cmon boys! get real! No matter how much game you all TALK; and thats all it its is talk, the Lakers will not get past the first round! Both the Suns and Lakers lack the talent of the Spurs, Nuggets, and Hornets! So keep on talking your garbage and after the Lakers go down, well then you can go back to leading your miserable, meaningless little lives. And who knows, you might even find a woman along the way!HAHAHAHAHA!! GO SPURS!!!!!
"Who cares about whining..." "It's part of the game..." Tell me that's okay when your son is following his idol's lead and constantly whining and complaining to you every time you tell him "No..."
Honestly, it's that kind of prima donna attitude that continues to pollute professional sports and sickens true fans of the game itself.
Yes, absolutely, these guys have got skills I could only dream about. But skills & $$$ don't equal class & dignity... and ultimately, peer & fan respect.
"...any of the five or six have a shot at winning it." Is this joker really trying to tell us that a healthy Mavs don't have a shot? How about the Nugs with 2 future HOFers & the best rebounder/shot blocker in the world? Will they win it? Probably not, but if he's including the Rockets & the playoff experience-less Hornets, the Mavs should definately be in there.

I agree 100% w/md77! TD is the worst and now the rest of the team is following the example set by TD which includes TP,MG,BB,MFinley and the only one who get's on 'em is their coach-whom I truly respect, the rest of the team should just shut their holes and play bb, and I'm from SA, but I just can't stand it when Kobe,TD and the Spurs look for help from the ref's, s.u. and play "the game"; I enjoy the game and slammin the hole like
Amare does and James wo any crying about it! let your game do the talking! By the way Boston looks like they "bought" themselves a championship pretty much if they stay healthy, and hats off to the Hornets and Byron Scott!!!
That being said, can't wait for the western playoffs to kick off in a few weeks, going to be losing a lot of sleep w/all those games, but well worth it...you guys out there...."enjoy the games" who knows when this will happen again...
I also have to agree with md77 about TD being a whinning baby and don't let the offical call a foul on him. He'll look at them like "who me" yeah you bigbaby (and not bigbaby on the Celtics) he complains about everything. Never really like TD at all.
Warriors have to step-up these last three games or aleast get the last two and hope Denver lose all of theirs. I know it's wishful thinking, but that's what happens when your team is down you have to start reaching for things to happen.
WARRIOR FAN FOR LIFE WIN OR LOSE I'M A BELIEVER UNTIL THE FAT LADY SINGS!!!!
I was at the Dubs/Denver game last night. We played at 65%. We need a prayer to make it. No I will not be happy with 49 wins and not making the playoffs. I fly from San Diego to Oaktown just to watch the Dubs. No way I settle for 9th.
The Lakers have Kobe and anything can happen. But Bynum will be a zero factor. He's been out so long. Add a new PF to the scene and the Zen Master himself cannot piece it together fast enough to finish off the best in the west.
So what if Utah beat the Celtics. Didn't Charlotte and a few other duds. Utah can get to the conference finals with home court advantage. Otherwise they should make vacation plans.
The Rockets are the true mistery. Stepping up or out? 1st round dud? It's possible. They do have TMac, half man-half season.
I see the Suns and Spurs mixing it up somewhere again. Keep Shaqs minutes down and things can happen. His game has looked pretty good for a "washed up" old man.
the west is exciting to watch we have teams that won't make the palyoffs that have more wins than the 5th ahd 6th seeds in the east and the seeding still isn't settled yet it's deffinatelly gonna be interesting. I think the Mavs will match up to any team thats there now tho
And then there is poor, poor pitiful, C-Clamp..still computer challenged, (remember, your the only one in the Laker World, who has a brokeass computer)...
Gee, fool, where you been?? Would a been good gig, to see your Laker Smack "Before" instead of "After" the Game....but that pretty much sums your towel covered head expertise, as far as prognosticating goes..huh, CJ??? YEAH LAKERS WIN!! THEY ARE THE CHAMPS, AND YOUR THE CHUMP!!!
By the way, amazing distance your boy Bleed, put between you and him the other day..I found his comments re: YOUR CAPITAL ####, unbelievably ironic..
Remember bout, oh, three months ago, PunaKid said something, and I "Sided" w/your sorry ####???? vs. Bleed, back when you both were at your vitriolic (look it up dunce boy) best???
You Remember, Puna #### Kid, or Pole Licking Kid, and other incredibly intelligent comments by the both of you..
Funny thing though, You, Master #### CEEJAY, told me, Puna Buttah, don't "ever" align myself with your sorry ####, I don't know, second post I ever put up..ever..!
How's this ####??? Best and only good advice you ever gave..You are now 100% irrelevant..(Yeah, sure, Mike Kahn gave you some sort of recognition for being so ignorant, you know, he's paid to do that.C_Felt, and then you thankfully vanished..PTL!).
Won't be responding to your drivel, but I sure as Hell missed pounding on your ignorant ####...
Check w/Marlo, he's got a "Package," just waiting on your distrubition skills... and then, please, head back to your East Coast roots...Bruddah!!!
P.S. Chad, you gonna come back at me w/anything, please,
Brown Salt-The Warriors had that game won last night, then didn't know what a "Zone Defense" was..Maybe some of Da Boyz, shouldda stayed in school, and learned a few things..Ya think????
Uhh, I don't think the Nuggets and everybody above the GSWarriors, will, like, lose their last 3 games..
(Personally, I am glad this team is probably out of the playoffs....They kick the Lakers ####, at will. .oh and last year it was the Mavs..).
Don't need Baron Dangerous, working point guard against the Lakes...Great team, though, just can't get the smarts to finish..Maybe, You, Brown Suggaaa, could give them a "Brain Transplant..?"
You have a very large brain, and they need some IQ points...Just do it Sug!!! Your least favorite guy...Me.
This news is the most talked on the forum page of the tall dating site ~Tallkisss.com, where many tall models, tall sportsmen and tall admirers flirting.
I would love that first round match-up also. Dont think its going to be as easy as most of you Laker fans think...as a matter of fact, I say the Suns beat them again...But, as a Suns fan, what would you expect.

The spurs are whiners. Whoever said they should follow their coaches example, they are popp is the biggest whiner out there. If you listen to him the spurs have never been beat they have only been cheated. No team that is coached by Don Nelson will ever win a title because his idea of defense is outscore your opponent. The Lakers will win the west and Kobe will finally win MVP because that team has finally bought into his determination, they have the best bench in the west, and the best overall starting five in the west with or without Bynum
Although the Suns are playing good ball right now, I would love to see them match up against the mighty Lakeshow in any round! when the Lakers move the ball and play at least a little defense for 48, they are unbeatable. The only team that could stop them now is the Spurs. New Orleans is too inexperienced in the playoffs, Denver can't play defense, Houston doesn't have enough firepower, Utah doesn't either, Phoenix can't only rely on Shaq on D, and Dallas will choke again this year.
YOU BIG MOUTH ORCHID PICKING BOTTOM FEEDER, THE ONLY THING BROKE IS YOUR BRAIN, YOU SOUND LIKE YOU HAVE A LOT OF ANGER DEEP INSIDE OF YOU....YOU OLD, POOR ABUSED ORPHAN CHILD. I DONT EVEN KNOW ABOUT HALF THE STUFF YOU ARE RANTING ABOUT....LOSER GET A LIFE, YOU SPEND ALL OF IT ON THIS CHEAP WEBSITE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME THING EVERYDAY. YOUR LIKE A YO-YO, UP AND DOWN. EVERY TIME KHAN WRITES A NEW ONE, SOUNDS LIKE HE HAS MORE CONTROL OVER YOUR LIFE THAN YOU, AND THEN YOU THINK YOUR SMART CAUSE YOU KNOW HOW TO SPELL. CALM DOWN OLDTIMER!!!
I DONT KNOW WHY KHAN HAS ISSUES WITH ME, JUST CAUSE I STATED THAT HIS ARTICLE ABOUT THE THE WARRIORS (9TH SEED = NO PLAYOFFS/BUMS) BEING CONTENDERS AND THAT THEY WOULD MAKE THE PLAYOFFS WAS WORTHLESS. PEOPLE TELL HIM HIS ARTICLES SUCK ALL THE TIME.
TRUTH IS THAT YOUR NOT A FAN OF ANYTHING, YOU ONLY BLOG CAUSE YOUR A BITTER OLD MAN WITH NO LIFE, WHILE YOUR INTENTIONS ARE ONLY TO GO OFF ON OTHER PEOPLE AS IF YOU WERE SOME BULLY...I AM SURE YOUR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TYPE OF #### IN PUBLIC WITH NO NADS TO EVER CONSIDER SPEAKING OUT LIKE THAT. JUST LIKE THE #### WHO CREATED A LOGIN TO APPEAR AS IF IT WAS MINE. THATS THE TYPE OF LOSERS THAT CONGREGATE ON FOX SPORTS, AND IF YOU WERE CREATIVE AS YOU THINK YOU ARE THAN YOU WOULD'NT SPEND SO MUCH TIME WORRYING ABOUT ME....FREAKING ####!!!
AND THE REST OF THE PHX, HOU, golden state warriors, DAL FANS CAN KISS MY BROWN AZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!
I SAID THE LAKERS WOULD BE TOP DOGS, I SAID KOBE IS MVP.....AND LAST NIGHT PROVED IT. SPANKED THE HELL OUT OF THE HORNETS, SHUT DOWN CHRIS PAUL, CHRIS IS NO COMPARISON TO KOBE...NOT EVEN CLOSE! HES A GREAT PLAYER BUT NOT MVP WORTHY, COME ON, THE GUY AVG. 21 PTS A GAME, THAT IS NOT CHAMPIONSHIP MATERIAL!! HE DOES PASS THE BALL WELL, HE'S A POINT GUARD SO I EXPECT NOTHING LESS THAN 10 ASSISTS A GAME FOR A GUY THAT HOLDS THE BALL LONGER THAN ANYONE ELSE ON HIS TEAM, SO DONT GET SO GEEKED JUST CAUSE HE HAS 17 LAST NIGHT, THATS WHAT YOUR SUPPOSED TO DO IF YOU PLAY THAT POSITION. NEVER THE LESS HE WAS UNABLE TO LEAD HIS TEAM TO VICTORY.
CECHUMP:
Glad to see you survived the time under your rock. You need to send some props to the Rockets for taking the Suns down for The Lakers to win the division. The Lakers better win the Sunday game with the Spurs or you will be seeing the Suns in the 1st round. They have enough size now to wear the Lakers OUT in the paint. You're bragging now but I'll bet your stomach was churning when you saw the Hornets come storming back within 1 point. I have watched all the Laker games lately and I see a team that will be lucky to make it to the second round especially if Gasol has to try and take his weak-a-s-s game into the paint against Shaq and Amare. The Rockets beat them easily last night because of an off night by Nash but the Suns inside game is a load now. If their shooters get hot I wouldn't want any part of that team. Better beat those Spurs or the Lakers will have to play them in the 2nd round if they make it.
That would mean the Rockets would just have to beat the Jazz (No easy task even w/ home court) and then the Hornets. I think the Rockets may get hot again and surprise some people. The talent level is so much better than last year and they are running Adelman's offense to perfection. The bench is contributing Bigtime and Scola is becoming a monster. Carl Landry is almost healthy again, Bobby Jackson, Luther Head, Chuck Hayes, Novack and Brooks are bringing so much energy off the bench they usually mean the difference when they come in in the 2nd quarter.
We'll see ya'll in the playoffs.
I am a Mavs Fan and I do think they like any team in the west Except maybe Denver have a chance if they get hot and play some D. But I must be honest if asked to handicap the West. I see it as follows:
1. SPURS ...they are still the champs and if Mano is on his game they have to be the favorites.
2. LAKERS....If Bynum is back and Healthy, with Gasol and Kobe (I can't stand his whining) they are a 3some that can win it all
3. JAZZ... they play Defense, but must do better on the road. If they do they can win it all.
They rest of they west has a chance, but would be a surprise if those top 3 don't take it all.
Wow I thought Golden State had the most come from behind victories this season...and cats are saying they can't close out games??? they need brain transplants all of a sudden? Golden State is one power post player away from being an elite team in the Western Conference dont get it twisted. If a cat like Boozer was playing for Golden State we would smash the entire West!
Baron, Monta, Cap'n Jack, Boozer, Biedrins.=Great Team
Hey jeffkalista....being a Mavs fan I wonder how you overlook the whining by one of the dirtiest non-defensive players in the league ...._irk???? (_ is because there's no "D" in him)...the guys a cheap-shot artist....
punakid... I made that point about the Warriors beating themselves because of their offense, defense and shooting too many three's. If you had half a brain and would read instead of getting on your computer and just typing you would know. Maybe you should have stayed in school and learned a few things. Ya think???? For one thing the Warriors don't need your half of brain. Another thing I'm not mad at ya, you can always cry on my shoulder. I'm here for ya. Have a nice day!!!
WARRIOR FAN FOR LIFE WIN OR LOSE. DID YOU GET THAT PUNAKID?
"Wow" to the dude who said Utah doesn't have enough firepower. They're like the most efficient and one of the top-scoring teams in the NBA.
The Jazz have the best path to the West Finals right now. While the Lakers, Suns, Spurs and Mavs kill each other off, they'll have the rockets and winner of denver/new orleans.
If these standings hold, look for Utah/San Antonio in the West Finals.
