Wounded stars have returned in force
Apr 03, 2008 | 8:20AM | report this
In what was evidently a strange convergence of energy from the sports gods, four injured All-Stars returned to their respective teams Wednesday with just two weeks left before the the NBA playoffs begin.

Isn’t this why we love professional sports?

• A funny thing happened just hours after Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said it looked like it would require more time before Dirk Nowitzki would return from the left ankle and knee injury he suffered on March 23 in a loss to the Spurs … he started. Nowitzki scored 18 points in 27 minutes during the huge 111-86 win over the Warriors, moving the Mavs alone into seventh place in the West. The Mavs were 2-3 since the injury, but now have a two-game lead and the tie-breaker over the ninth-place Warriors and a one-game lead over the eighth-place Nuggets, who also have the tie-breaker with the sliding W’s.

• Nobody has known what to think about Gilbert Arenas, who has been talking for six weeks that he would return from November surgery on his left knee, but Wednesday night was it for Agent Zero. He came off the bench to score 17 points in 19 minutes for the Wizards in a bizarre, 110-109 loss to the Bucks during which teammates Antawn Jamison (sprained right shoulder) and DeShaun Stevenson (sprained right ankle) were helped off the floor after a scramble for the ball with 6.3 seconds left. The result dripped with irony, not only because it was Arenas’ return, but both Caron Butler (strained hamstring) and Antonio Daniels (sprained wrist) returned after missing a game with injuries as well … so much for the full compliment of players that coach Eddie Jordan was expecting.

• Everything returned to normal for the Lakers when Pau Gasol made his first appearance since suffering an ankle sprain on March 14. He played 32 minutes, contributing 10 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in the 104-91 win over the Blazers – a huge lift considering the Lakers were 5-5 since he got hurt. They remain just 1.5 games out of the top seed in the West, and have the third seed with first place in the Pacific Division, a game ahead of the Suns.

• And in perhaps the biggest surprise of all, Clippers forward Elton Brand entered the game midway through the first quarter against Seattle, playing for the first time since suffering a torn Achilles tendon in the summer. Predictably rusty, Brand scored 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Clippers came from behind to run away from the Sonics, 102-84, to end an eight-game road losing streak.

Brand’s move was typical of a quality guy not only showing that he wanted to play when he was ready, but also that he’s worth every penny to someone as a player and a leader if he does opt out of his contract this summer.

But the biggest boon certainly is the return of Nowitzki and what this game did for the Mavs and Warriors in divergent circumstances. Left for dead by so many critics, this was the second win in a row for the Mavs, and certainly the commentary by Johnson earlier in the day about Nowitzki’s status came at the expense of his mentor in gamesmanship – Warriors coach Don Nelson. The Mavs, who still have to travel this weekend to play the Suns and Lakers, suddenly are loaded with momentum after beating their first over-.500 team since acquiring Jason Kidd 22 games ago. They were 0-10 before Wednesday night, but Nowitzki’s return further girded this group – as Kidd had 17 assists compared to just 10 for the Warriors as a team in the game.

That statistic was reflective of how the Warriors have come apart of late. They’ve lost three of their last four and five of eight to slide out of what looked like a strong seventh place. Not only do they lose the tie-breakers to the Mavs and Nuggets, but they’ve lost two in a row for the first time since the Jan. 2-4, and only the second time since an 0-6 start with captain Stephen Jackson suspended. Furthermore, after 37 consecutives games of 100 points or more as the highest scoring team in the league, they had just 86 against the Mavs after managing only 92 in a 24-point loss to the Spurs Tuesday. Jackson, not coincidentally, was 1-for-11 with 2 points against the Mavs and 2-for-12 with a pair of 3-pointers against the Spurs. Eight points in two games won’t do for Captain Jack, averaging 20.4 for the season.

Where they go from here, with a game at Memphis Friday and the road trip ending at New Orleans on Sunday, is anybody’s guess. They do finish the season with four of their last five games at home with a game at Phoenix in between, so this thing could turn again depending on the Mavs and Nuggets. Of the four home games, the Nuggets are the only winning team, with the Clippers, Kings and Sonics the other three.

The Wizards’ position in the East is just as shaky – although they are far from falling out of the playoffs in the less competitive conference. However, the loss dropped them from the fifth seed pushing the Cavaliers for home court into a three-way tie for fifth with the Raptors and Sixers – three games ahead of the eighth-place Hawks – and light years (OK, seven games) ahead of the Nets and Pacers. The status of Jamison and Stevenson is huge moving forward – not only for the remaining seven games but for the playoffs.

As for the Lakers, they’re still waiting for 20-year-old starting center Andrew Bynum to return from the knee injury that has sidelined him Jan. 13. They are hopeful over the next few days, and obviously they’d love for him to play at least a handful of games before the playoffs.

Nobody figured this first Wednesday in April would be so significant, so you never know.

It seems like there are more injuries than ever these days. One would think with the advances in training techniques, eating habits and general health awareness that injuries would not be so common. I don't recall this many injuries back in the day. Oh well...good to see these guys get back on the court. All-stars are why people watch the games. Continued good health to all these studs.Hopefully Bynum isn't too far from joining them.
The Lakers at full strength would be scary...

Props to all the returning players. Dirk, I hope you didn't come back too soon, but you really needed that game.

Brand showed his class, and will certainly be among the most wanted if he opts out.

Most of these ankle sprains are from landing on a teammates' foot after trying for a rebound. Bynum and Dirk looked like they did the same thing, but I guess Dirks' wasn't as bad.

"Back in the day" players bucked up and played through it. Todays multi zillionaires have to sit down if they get a hang nail. The way basketball is played, alot of stress is placed on the lower back, knees and ankles. Jumps stops, rebounds and shooting in traffic all lend themselves to injured players. That has never changed throughout the history of basketball. The only difference is that players of today (not all) make more money and don't have the work ethic as the players of yesteryear. Could be compared to the guy who broke his leg and still shows up to work vs. a guy who has a sniffle and needs 3 days off.

To anyone who had no clue that Dirk was coming back, were you as happy as I was to watch the Mavs game? I had no plans to watch them last night until I saw him in the pregame huddle with his team. Everyone knows how great a season the NBA has had and lets hope the playoffs are equally exciting minus the injuries.

Very true what Ram says. that just goes to show how great a leader Coach Pop is. If his spurs get hurt before playooffs he never plays them until they have completely healed.

You know, after watching the Lakers last night, I noticed how much Pau resembles that vulture on the old Woody Woodpecker cartoons.
I love what he brings to the Lakers as a player, but dude is downright hideous.
Between him, Popeye Jones, Sam 'E.T."Cassell, Steve 'Marty Feldman eye" Nash, and Kevin "Lerch' McHale...we could re-make the Aadams Family ;NBA Edition. Donnie Walsh could be Uncle Fester. We could even have Shaq do a guest stint as Herman Munster!

...just a thought.

Bleed, don't forget about TMac and his two lazy eyes, Drew Gooden and Baron Davis' 70's porn #### bush faces, Ray Allen's just plain ugliness, Farmar's ears (and Mbenga's for that matter) looking like he came straight out of Lord of the Rings, Shaq's drunken slur, and PJ's broken hip pimp limp. And yeah Oden, how old is that guy? He looks like he should be thinking about retirement and he isn't even 21 yet.

But here's my real point, do you think if the Mav's weren't in danger of falling out of the playoffs Dirk would have come back so soon? No. The same but opposite reason Pau sat out so long. Arenas had to come back, it's been so long and it's contract time. Same for Elton Brand. Those two are going to sign for huge dollars this summer and sitting out the rest of the year would lose them millions. Wade, on the other hand, is under contract and that's why he's sitting.

Bynum and Pau sat for extra time because the Lakers (because of the MVP) stayed on top of, or close to the top of the West. Is it coincidence they are both coming back just a few games before the playoffs? Phil was playing with everyone like he has been for 15 years. I still think the Spurs win it all, but at least the Lakers will compete with them.

I'm certainly glad that the Mavericks were able to beat up on the Warriors...but I believe they looked so good because the Warriors are indeed that bad. They (the Warriors) played absolutely no semblance of defense in any form and ran absolutely no kind of offense all night. They don't care if you score 100...they feel like they'll score 110. They don't care and I can't stand them for it! That being said...I cannot wait for the playoffs this year. The West is going to be amazing!

I gotta agree with Bleed about Sam Cassell. Me and my fiance always say that he looks like an alien...especially with his bald head! I think he and Moesha (Brandy Norwood) are from the same planet...??

ram, the plan is to take him on the road trip to Sac and Portland with him working out and practicing with the team and to get him in the line up for, if not the Clipper game then the last 3 games. Letting him play off the bench getting into the groove. Should be plenty of time for Phil to gauge if he'll be able to contribute in the playoffs

Why does it surprise most of you that Kobe is playing hurt??? He knows that a possible championship is just around the corner. I dont think it will be this year but he knows he can get his injury fixed long B-4 next season. Even though I am not a Kobe fan and will never claim to even like the Lakers I like the competitiveness of this years western conference and I think next year will be just as promising. I would like to see my team kick the #### out of all but I am a true basketballer who just loves the sport and to watch these ahtletes in action(yes, even Kobe).

Farmar should try out for the stage version of Dumbo, Mbenga is definitley a Neanderthal, he looks like SpongeBob and Patrick did as cavemen....speaking of the less evolved...
How the hell did we overlook Chris "Captain Caveman" Kaman??? Dude should be starring in those Geico commercials "So easy a caveman can do it". He's friggin Encino Man. I wish he'd grow that thinning mop back, that hair looked like the little boomerang chucking kid in The Road Warrior.

The "Worm" was a trendsetter, who knew he'd set the bar for almost every NBA player after him? He was the FIRST to rock ink, now there's more players with tats than without...Crazy.
Oh, Oh, oh....Scott Pollard. Dude's had more hairstyles than Madonna, has the facial skin of Edward James Olmos and Elvis called....he wants his sideburns back.

nobody should be surprised that Kobe is playing hurt. He does it ALLLLL the time. Don't forget that 3 of the last 4 years of Worlds and Olympics that he was supposed to play in he couldn't because he had to have surgery over the summer for injuries that he played through during the NBA season.

Keep in mind that The Big Loafer, Shaq waited all summer until right before the start of the season to have HIS surgery, and recover on "company time"

Kobe is waiting until AFTER the OLYMPICS to get his digit knifed on...

...just so we don't forget WHY Laker fans have resentment for Snaq O'Meal.

jiggaman,
Dikembe even SOUNDS ugly...He should be the voice of the Cookie Monster on Seasame Street.

1Kim,
Ronny has the underbite of a bulldog too. His jaw swings more than Bobby Brown.

Mike Bibby is the whitest black man on the planet, whiter than Michael Jackson and bowlegged as a brokeback cowboy.

Keith Closs was a red-head freckle faced Howdy Doody lookin cat. He was skinnier than a supermodel, and when he released the fro?? Damn.

Bleed, it's only because he doesn't want to miss them again, he wants a gold medal. The medals will be the 2nd or 3rd week of August. Kobe will have the surgery right after, and miss preseason, but be back for the season. Don't worry about. He actually said recently that Phil had already told him that he would give him most of the preseaon off to recover from the Olympics. The surgery won't affect the season. He won't pull a Shaq. Oh I remember why I was not unhappy to see the Big Arogant go. That, and after dunking the ball (um, HIS JOB) staring down Doc Buss saying, "pay me." Oh, I remember.

matt,
I was COMPLIMENTING Kobe for being a warrior.
That little episode with Shaq yelling at Dr. buss came AFTER Payton & Malone agreed to join the Lakers for LESS than market value. Then he pulls that ####?? The list of greivances from Lakers fans towards Shaq could go on for days. I love him for bringing titles back to L.A., but I hate him for all the B.S. he caused while being shown the door. After the finals loss to Detriot, he was disowned by me. He's pulling the same bad-mouth routine towards Miami now. The Big Jerk deserved to have Shaunie cheat, going Pricilla Presley on him. You just KNOW he cheated on her too. That was his big gripe with Kobe, he let the cat out of the bag on how Shaq paid these groupies off to keep them quiet during his trial. I hope we see the Suns in the playoffs, beating them would be sweet.

Sincerely,
Mitch Kupchak.
