They had room to improve . . . so they did

Figuring out the most improved player in the NBA is a lot like picking the most valuable player. The criterion is always the problem.

Is it the guy who comes out of nowhere with good stats?

Is it a good player who becomes a better player, or a good player who becomes great to help his team win?

Is it a disappointing player who finally puts it together?

You can make a case for all of the above as we give you the five most improved players and settle on one. Our top candidates are Orlando’s Hedo Turkoglu and Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo from the Celtics, Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge and Jose Calderon in Toronto.

Right out of the blocks, we eliminated a top candidate – the Lakers’ Andrew Bynum because he played in only 35 games due to a knee injury and has been out since Jan. 13. It’s a shame because Bynum went from averaging 7.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks as an iffy center a year ago to 18 double-doubles this season – averaging 13.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks with a major impact on the Lakers.

Another decent contender who would be tough to vote for would be last year’s winner, Monta Ellis, even though he has improved. He went from being an immature guard with skills right out of high school two years ago to an impact player last season while averaging 16.2 points, 4.1 assists and 1.7 steals, allowing the Warriors to trade Jason Richardson for the draft rights to North Carolina’s talented 6-10 Brendan Wright. Ellis has responded with flashes of stardom, at 19.8 points, shooting 53.3 percent from the field, and became one of just nine players in history to shoot better than 60 percent from the field in a month (February). But we know about him now and he hasn’t improved so much from last year that he can become the first ever to win the award in consecutive years.

So is including Howard but not Ellis a double-standard? No, because Howard has gone from being star quality to a superstar – leading the Magic to the third-best record in the East. He’s the key figure in nearly every game, leading the NBA with 63 double-doubles and in rebounding at 14.5, and has increased his scoring average from 17.6 to 21.2 while also leading the league in free-throw attempts. He has become the most dominant big man in the game. But because he was an All-Star, he’s fifth in the countdown.

Aldridge had nine consecutive 20-plus games for the Blazers until spraining his ankle Monday night at Seattle. At 6-11, 240, he was the second overall pick of the 2006 draft, and to some that eliminates him right there because of expectations. I don’t buy that one. Part of a draft day deal from Chicago, he blew hot and cold as a rookie, averaging just 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in Zach Randolph’s shadow. But when Randolph was unloaded and 2007 top pick Greg Oden went down with a knee injury, Aldridge began to blossom and has averaged 17.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks as a power forward. He’ll be even better next year with Oden and along with Brandon Roy has everything to do with why the Blazers have been one of the surprise teams in the league.

Third is Calderon, a point guard who very quietly kept the Raptors flowing in the wake of another serious spinal injury to starting playmaker T.J. Ford, and the knee problems that have had All-Star Chris Bosh in and out of the lineup. He’s raised his average from 8.7 points to 12.2, and improved his field-goal (53.2 percent), 3-point (45.2) and free-throw shooting (91.9). He’s also up to 8.0 assists a game while leading the league in assist-to-turnover ratio. He would have been higher, but his effectiveness has dropped off since Ford and Bosh returned. The team is struggling with its chemistry. but it certainly has nothing to do with Calderon, who has kept the chemistry intact for the bulk of the season. He’ll be a free agent at the end of the season and will create a lot of action because he’ll make somebody better.

Second in the countdown is Rondo, the feisty 22-year-old point guard that Danny Ainge refused to part with in his offseason reconstruction. It has paid off remarkably with Rondo setting the tone for the defensive orientation of coach Doc Rivers with relentless pressure on the ball. He’s also raised all of his numbers to 10.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.7 steals and improved his shooting from 41.8 to 47.8 percent. The only reason he didn’t win is because it helps him immeasurably to have veterans Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce around him. Nonetheless, the 6-1 Rondo has responded superbly in just his second season and has a lot to do with Boston’s record-breaking success.

So that hands this year’s award to Turkoglu, the versatile 6-10, 225-pound native of Istanbul. With great expectations as a rookie in Sacramento in 2000, there were thoughts he would play point guard like Magic Johnson, or score at will, and things never really panned out in his three seasons there. He was part of a three-way deal between the Kings, Spurs and Pacers, sending him to San Antonio for one mediocre season and he signed as with Orlando as a free agent in 2004. That’s when things gradually began to change. His numbers and impact went up, but nothing like this season. Turkoglu, Howard and Rashard Lewis consistently put up the best numbers in the game.

However, Turkoglu has been the X-factor all season and should have been an All-Star. He tied a franchise record with two triple-doubles and has had eight double-doubles; beat the Celtics with a 3-pointer at the buzzer in a huge win, and raised his numbers to career-highs with 19.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 83.4 percent on free throws, 40.7 from 3-point range and 45.3 overall. He has become a star for the Magic, the man with the ball in the clutch, and has responded.

And that’s why he is our most improved player for 2008.

Definitely agree. When he was with San Antonio, we would see flashes of brillance, followed by games of mediocrity. I always liked him and am glad to see him doing well.

Mike,

I agree, Turkoglu is the 2007-2008 Most Improved Player. I was surprised that the Spurs didn't do a better job of incorporating him into their offense.

Speaking of most improved players, has there ever been a player who has improved himself more from the beginning of his career to the end than Steve Nash?

Here's a guy who was drafted 15th and was the third string point guard for his first few seasons in the league. Yet he became a two-time MVP award winner.

Hat's off to Hedo...he's had a great season!

I think Andrew Bynum would be right there with him, were it not for the injury. Hopefully Drew can come back and prove me right by helping the Lakers win another title...GET WELL SOON ANDREW!!

The only reason you shouldn't give it to the man-child is because he is a man-child meaning that he is extremely tough but still has a lot of improvement coming his way. Orlando will probably trade him and where ever he goes he will get three or four championshps. So far he is on the same track as Shaq but I think he will turn out to be a Moses Malone or David Robinson player only better.

donthewhale, there are a lot of players who have improved their game this season. You could probably come up with as many as ten who have gotten considerably better, but Turkoglu just stands out.

As a Spurs fan, I always liked Turk.. but it was his tendancy to not show up in "big game" situations.. ie playoffs, that ultimately made him expendable.

Glad to see him doing well, albeit he's in a lower-pressure situation w/ a young team not expected to contend for titles (yet).

Let's see how he does w/ Orlando come playoff time. Maybe he's mentally matured enough now to be relied upon in those big-game moments.

Hands down, no contest, most improved player -> Rafer Alston.

After last season it looked like Rafer would be cast overboard. The Rockets traded for Mike James and they signed Steve Francis. The Houston media played taps for Rafer.

So what did Rafer do? He beat out the other guys for the starting job. He started playing like a really good point guard, distributing the ball, playing under control, looking like the real deal.

Rafer still takes to many "prayer shots" from way outside with 23 seconds remaining on the shot clock. But those are few and far between compared to prior years.

Call it maturity. Credit Adelman's system. Whatever the reason, Rafer is the most improved. The Rockets 22 game winning steak wouldn't have been possible without Rafer. He's not in the same league with Steve Nash or Deron Williams or Chris Paul but he's not very far behind.

To the guy who said Ronnie Brewer, I can kinda agree. The Jazz get so much s-h--i-t for being in Utah and having close to no fans outside of Utah, but Ronnie should def get several votes. I mean talk about a guy who'll take over a game and when no one publishes it in the media he'll do it again.

Ronnie is one of the most athletic players in the NBA, just watch him play. His dunking and vert is amazing. He should have been in the dunk contest.

He def had a great improvement.

4.6 PPG to 12 PPG
.7 Steals to 1.7 Steals
.67 %FT to .76 %FT
.52 %FG to .55 %FG
1.3 Rebounds to 2.9 Rebounds
.4 Assists to 1.8 Assists

^^^ That's a great improvement for a second year guard, and he's got plenty of room to grow. So if not this year he'll win in the following years to come.

Turk improved PPG by +6.6
Brewer +7.4

Turk went -.1 steals
Brewer by +1.0

Turk improved Assists by +1.7
Brewer by +1.4

Turk improved Boards by +1.9
Brewer by +1.6

It's pretty darn close, and Brewer actually improved more than Hedo, so to urokami, before you start hating on the Jazz for absolutley no reason have the slightest of clues

I noticed the same Spurcse. He was with us the year of .4

Derek Fisher hit that shot that killed us with .4 on the clock. Talk about getting your heart ripped out!

had that not happened, I believe the Spurs would have gone all the way that year and we would have had 3 in row and 5 in 8 years. But hell, I'll take a title every other year for a decade as a team and a fan.

I give Shaq most improved attitude. With the cost of diesel these days, you better dive into the stands.
I like Rondo for this. Are there FOX news archives from October of '07 that has the anal'ysts questioning Rondo's ability and management's decision to start him? Maybe they could win that many with Ainge at point.
Hedo used to tear it up in Sac'town, so he's a sleeper to me.
You'd think there would be a Knickerbocker in this list.

Ironic, too. Knicks basketball could kill a one true God at 40 feet.

No mention of Mike Dunlevy? After he was never given a fair shot, or had unrealistic expectations put on him at Golden State, he has become the player everyone thought he could be when he was drafted #3. Great shooter, solid game all the way around. Definately one of the most improved,. and about the only thing Pacer fans had to cheer about all year.

The fact that Kahn didn't mention Ronnie Brewer of the Jazz shows this guy is out to lunch. Brewer is a second year guard that played very few minutes last year and now is currently dominating the baseline with speed and athletic ability. Brewer led the SEC in scoring and his father is an ex pro b-ball player. Brewer is the fourth best player on the Jazz. Utah is the fourth youngest team in the league and by Tuesday night will be the two seed in the Western Conference. Eat your heart out Jazz haters!!!!

Hoffman your stupid! Nash never deserved MVP its a disgrace to people like Tim Duncan, Magic Johnson, Shaq, and MVP of all MVPs Michael Jordan. Anyone who only plays one end of the court needs to go play as a globetrotter and leave the game to real men. When Nash got his MVPs they shouldve went to Chris Paul. He had all the same offensive numbers that Nash had but since he plays the game right he had steals and rebounds to go along with it. The Hornets wouldnt win 20 games without him. Its sad when we think Nash is the best guard and there are 10 or more PGs with better all around stats. Yeah his offense is great but as the Bulls, Lakers, Pistons, and Spurs showed everyone has to be willing to do their part on D. Shaq will be foul trouble all through playoffs just like STUDmire cause of having to pick up his man everytime down the court. Trade Nash for Hinrick or start Bell, Barbosa, Diaw, STUDmire and Shaq and play D.

urokami- you need to read the story a little closer and not be so anxious to make yourself look like an i.diot- kahn said he had 2 triple-doubles and 8 double-doubles.

And why are you laughing at Ronnie Brewer? Looks like you just missed something that's obvious to anyone who's watched Utah play.

Others not mentioned that could be considered-
Beno Udrich- Allowed Sacto to trade Bibby
Al Jefferson- Becoming a beast in Minny
Chris Paul- Same case as Howard- only his is better

Mr.Kahn I have a problem with you not choosing Montel Ellis but you pick LaMarcus Aldridge. I can understand Dwight Howard and your reasoning but your assestment of LaMarcus in comparison to Montel is crazy. Montel has improve his game to maxium capacity in comparison to LaMarcus. Montel is a beast of a player, if you want to talk about consistency then his name comes up. If you look at Montel career over the first two years then look at LaMarcus, it's not LaMarcus who is the much better and consistent player. Even you said he is a improve, with skills and a impact player. The only thing you mention about LaMarcus is that he has blossom, you didn't mention anything about his talent. So how do you give him the nodd? You say it's not a double standard. I say LIAR, LIAR!!!

Yeah - I saw Turkey-glue's "magic" when he nailed the three pointer to beat the C's a few months back. He's a good choice for most-improved... but what about an honorable mention for David West. While West had a decent season two years ago, he has really come on strong this year. The Hornets have the best record in the West and they could not have done it without West's contribution on the offensive end.

I didn't mean to ignore the fact the Turkoglu deserves the nodd hands down as a matter of fact he should have gotten a pick for the All-Star team as mention in your article. He is the man for whatever team he plays for. If the game is on the line he is the one that should have the ball in his hands. He's done a great job for the Magic and I know that Sac is extremely upset because they no longer have him.

Turk probably deserves it but there are other guys that should have got mentioned like Brewer and Rafer, also Al Jefferson moved to the west and improved his numbers on offense and is averaging 21ppg and 11.5rpg. I know hes on the wolves after all but he was on the lowly celtics last yr. Why cant Chris Paul be mentioned also, if Howard can? Give him the Mvp and most improved.

It's gotta go to Turkoglu, but Devin Harris is as strong a candidate for 2nd as anyone. If you look at just his NJ stats v. last year's (or even his total year stats v. last year), there's the same jump as anyone but Turkoglu. Devin Harris and two first rounders for Kidd (essentially) will go down as the Herschel Walker trade of the NBA. Harris has unique speed, and given the learning curve for running the point, I'd put the Nets back near the top of the East next year (not saying much, I know).

For some bizarre reason, I just blanked on both Al Jefferson and Ronnie Brewer, both of whom were clearly worthy of consideration. I had made a list the day before and misplaced it - funny how I just found it.

Anyway, my apologies to Jefferson and the Timberwolves organization, and Brewer and the Jazz organization. Both have raised their level of play and deserved to be recognized.

The difference for Turkoglu is he has a lot to do with why the Magic are so much better this season. Thanks and again, my apologies to the players and readers for the brainlock.

Props to Kahn for admiting that he blew it on Brewer and Jefferson. I wonder if urokami read that. It seems obvious to me why Kahn forgot both of them. They both play on small market teams in the West. Believe me, if they played in the East or in L.A., they wouldn't have been forgoten.

For me, the choice for MIP is Brewer. Remember when Fisher left the Jazz and everybody talked about the big hole he left on the roster? Well Brewer stepped into the hole and the Jazz are even better. The will improve from 51 wins last year to 54 or 55 wins this year. What makes his numbers even more impressive is that he's probably only the 5th option on offense after Booze, DWill, Okur, and AK.

How about my man Tyson Chandler. Chris Paul is definitely an MVP candidate but without the inside game of Chandler Paul would not have as many assist as he has. Tyson has been thrown around the league and to finally get his chance to shine in an offense that compliments his game should get him some votes for most improved. He-Don't has had his chance to shine in an offense while in Sacto and we seen big games and we seen stinkers, but Chandler is finally growing up and becoming a beast. Keep up the good work Chandler and had it not been for Bynum getting hurt none of this guys would atand a chance. GO LAKERS!!!!!!! KOBE MVP!!!!!! LAKERS WORLD CHAMPS!!!!!!!!!! BTW Nash never should have won the MVP's he won, he doesnt play defense and in the big games he can't get physical and he hates playing against physical players. That's no MVP that's Euro-Ball

All do respect to Turkoglu, he is not the most improved player..Rajon Rondo should win this award..I have seen every Celtics game this season and even though KG PP RA are on his team, he runs the team quietly..KG PP AND RA get all the attention and Rondo just keeps on driving the Celtics machine...Next year there will be four double figure scorers on the Celtics. He has done an amazing job..Ainge once again made a brilliant decision in not allowing Rondo to be any part of a trade.
