Warriors are in the running again
Mar 21, 2008 | 9:12AM | report this

They’ve grown up to be a real threat, and that’s been no easy task for the Golden State Warriors after more than a decade of failure.

Until they slipped into the playoffs last year and crushed the Dallas Mavericks in the first round to pull off one of the great upsets in NBA history, they had been a failing franchise in a great sports market.

Even then, they were a novelty item when they fell to the Utah Jazz in the conference semifinals.

Not anymore. The quartet of coach Don Nelson and stars Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson and Monta Ellis is proving to be as lethal as any combination in the NBA today. They are 40-18 in the 58 games they’ve played together this season, averaging 61.0 points, 13.8 rebounds, 15.1 assists and 5.03 steals. It has everything to do with why the Warriors lead the NBA in scoring at 110.9 per game, including 31 in a row in triple digits, and have remained just 4.5 games out of the top seed in the Western Conference.

The start of the transformation was when general manager Chris Mullin was hired to restore the franchise to what it was like when he was an All-Star player. But even he had growing pains on the job. He turned the roster over and made a horrible hire in Stanford coach Mike Montgomery before he coaxed his old coach Nelson out of retirement in Hawaii.

It was the return of Nellieball -- with the promise, “We’re going to play small and fast, so try and catch us if you can.” That’s the way it was when Mullin teamed with Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond in the “Run TMC” era of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Before last season, the Warriors hadn’t even been to the playoffs in 13 years and hadn't won a series in 16 years. Obviously, it was worth a shot and it worked.

This time around, though, it works even better. The change of rules prohibiting hand checking and blocking the path to the basket in the lane has made small and fast more of a style than something charming. If you don’t have special power players, then this is the vogue way to play. So a lot of teams have adopted this brand of ball, and the Warriors, along with the Suns, are the best at it.

Still, the Warriors began the season 0-6 -- some of that having to do with Jackson serving out a suspension for an off-court indiscretion. But they have lost two in a row only once since then and amassed a 42-19 record since the dismal start. That's fourth best in the NBA over that span, trailing only the Celtics, Pistons and Lakers.

The big difference between this season and last is consistency, and that has come as a result of playing well on the road too. Not only are the Warriors a tough 23-10 in the now packed Oracle Arena, where they increased their season ticket sales a whopping 50 percent, but they’re 19-15 on the road compared to 12-29 a year ago.

All of this explains why they guaranteed the final $2 million of Nelson’s to the fashionable $5 million range and already picked up the option for next season despite his 68th birthday coming. After all, he is only 58 wins behind Lenny Wilkens (1,332) for the most in NBA history. Perhaps more importantly, the players love this style.

He has built the team around Davis and Jackson, a couple of unorthodox players with fearless personalities. Davis is a powerful point guard, prone to spectacular streaks and injuries throughout his career -- and not afraid to voice his displeasure with his coach and teammates. Jackson is a long and skinny swingman with a history of emotional explosions on and off the court. Together, they have been nitroglycerin for this dormant franchise. Their potential, though, has always been obvious.

The unexpected piece of this perilous puzzle proved to be Ellis, the 6-3 guard snatched right out of Lanier High School in Jackson, Miss.

Everybody knew Davis and Jackson could be dangerous. But Ellis … well, not exactly. OK, he did lead his team to two state championships, and averaged 38.4 points, 7.9 assists, 6.9 rebounds and 4.5 steals his senior year. But that was high school. He was projected as a point guard, and the history of point guards skipping college for the NBA is littered with disappointment. It’s why he didn’t go until the second round.

Playing him with Davis really changed everything, however. After a predictably erratic rookie year, he exploded late last season – raising his average to 16.5 points while shooting .475 from the field to win the league’s Most Improved Player Award. But even more impressive has been the continual growth, with the latest buzz wondering if he should become the first player ever to win the award two years in a row – and before his 23rd birthday no less.

Not only is he averaging 19.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists, but he’s shooting a blistering .535 from the field. Granted, he hasn’t grown into 3-point range yet … but there seems little doubt he will as he adds to his sub-180 pounds. He became only the ninth guard in history to shoot 60 percent from the field for a month -- averaging 26.0 points while making .602 percent of his shots in February. Even more impressive is the 33 games in a row he has reached double-figures -- averaging 22.7 points while making .566 of his field goal attempts -- dating back to Jan. 7. All of this is why they dealt high-scoring Jason Richardson to Charlotte for the rights to draft 20-year-old Brandon Wright, the immensely gifted 6-10 forward from North Carolina who will be a factor next season.

What we don’t know is what Nelson can get out of the rest of the team. Al Harrington continues to be erratic, with flashes of exceptional play on offense and rebounding – but they come too sparingly. Latvian post player Andris Biedrins, who won’t be 22 for another couple of weeks, is plenty tough and is close to averaging a double-double with 10.0 points and 9.2 rebounds – but he’s still very raw offensively.

The bench is long and effective, with swingman Kelenna Azubuike, Mickael Pietrus and Matt Barnes all 20-minute guys who contribute on both ends of the floor. Veteran streak shooter Austin Croshere has had his moments as well. The shame of it all was the wasted time and effort to recruiting the aging and damaged Chris Webber to help up front. He has contributed virtually nothing while Wright is still trying to gain strength and adapt to the NBA. They could have used a legit big body to support Biedrins for the playoffs.

Nonetheless, they are right in the mix. They are within 4.5 games of the No. 1 seed, and 3.0 games from home-court advantage in the first round (or 3.5 games away from falling out of the playoffs to ninth-seeded Denver). Granted, they still don’t play good enough defense to be a serious threat to win the West – or even return to the second round of the playoffs – but depending on the matchup, that certainly isn’t out of the question either.

So in this topsy-turvy race in the West, the Warriors are one intrepid group daring anyone to stop them from running full blast and cranking up 3-pointers. They’re winning and their fun to watch, and that’s a far cry from where they were for more than a decade – just ask the nearly 20,000 delirious fans that show up each game at the Oracle.

The reconnection has indeed been divine.

Gotta give props to Monta Ellis, he really has stepped up his game and keeps improving. If he develops a 3point shot, he could average in the 20's next season.

THE WARRIORS? WHY WOULD YOU WRITE ABOUT THE WARRIORS?

WHATS NEXT, YOUR GOING TO TELL US HOW ISIAH WILL TURN THE KNICKS ORGANIZATION AROUND?

PLEASE KAHN, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE RUN OUT OF INTERESTING TOPICS TO WRITE ABOUT,

WHAT OTHER TEAM ARE YOU GOING TO PUMP UP, SINCE WHEN DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT AN 8TH SEED.

NUGGETS HAVE TO MUCH TALENT, AND WILL EVENTUALLY TAKE OVER THE 8TH SEED

This is a fun team to watch. Baron is a beast, Monta is the second coming of A.I. and is one of my favorite players. I am not a fan of Stephen Jackson, but must give his game respect - he is the heart & soul of this team. Azubuike is nice too, he plays with desire. Barnes gets UCLA love, bad ink and all. I loved Nellie's Run-TMC team too. I don't see them going deep in the playoffs, but a repeat of the Dallas upset would be nice to see. Keep it up boys...the NBA is taking notice. I'm a So-Cal boy to the core, by I keep an eye on the northern brethren too, out of the west coast love. Fun squad to watch.

that being said..

LAKERS IN JUNE.

"SINCE WHEN DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT AN 8TH SEED."

Ummmm. Since this year when an 8th seed is only 4 1/2 away from being first seed, 1 game behind last years team with the best record, 2 1/2 behind last years world champions, etc... Dumb ####

It's well known also the Warriors have a growing fan base around the country because they play an exciting brand of basketball. Look out for the Warriors this year and for for the next several years. They are one of the youngest teams and will only get better.

Go Warriors.

Very interesting blog, I knew they had done well after the terrible start, but was unaware they were 4th best after the Celts, Pistons, and Lakers.

Thanks for highlighting a team that doesn't get as much press as other NBA teams.

I'm not sure why Harrington gets so much playing time, every time I've seen them play Azubuike plays much better than Harrington.

The reason the Warriors will get into the playoffs and the Nuggets will be out:

Road record. Warriors 19-15, Nuggets 12-21.

Fact!

to cejamcp;

When you comment on things that you have no clue about maybe you should be a little more gracious to the teams you highly disregard. I'm sure your team or none of the other teams would want to start the first round off playing the Warriors just ask Dallas. The lakers look strong but so did Dallas and you saw what happened. Keep doubting because the lakers have some questions that need addressing as well.

Golden State won 42 games last year and that got them the 8th seed.

This year, they are 40-18 with 24 games to go.

I think they could beat Dallas again. I'd give them the nod against Phoenix over 7 games. But I don't think they have a shot at getting out of the 1st round if they meet Utah, San Antonio, or the Lakers.

Why write about the Warriors? Because they are a good team. From being a yearly draft lottery customers to a play-off team is a good story. Besides, they beat number one seed Mavs last year right? They have a better record this year, too. And it's because of how they play and who they play that makes them fun to watch and root for.

Yes the Lakers do have a lot of questions to deal with this year, but even this has not stopped them from leading the pack in the wicked west.

Many of the questions will be answered when their big men come back. Gasol first, then Mimh and Bynum. Ariza might make it back also.

Those are FOUR big men that have been missing from their lineup and with the exception of Gasol, these players have been out for a substansial amount of time.

And still they have the best record. We are back.

CEJAMCP You have no idea what your talking about. You talk smack about an 8th seed and why someone would write about them and here you are talking about a no seed. Get your facts together. Denver has talent but they cant seem to get it together either. Must be the high altitude. Warriors will make the playoffs and Denver will be watching from home.

i remember when monta ellis got drafted and he made a remark that the nba teams that passed him up would pay in the long run....he felt he shouldve been a higher pick and he was determined the day he got drafted to show all the doubters wrong.... im not a warrior fan at all but monta is proving the doubts to be entirely wrong.... unless he puts up another stink egg like he did last years playoffs....and without defense the warriors are going nowhere...

Denver,

They have two All Star starters and a reigning Defensive MVP and still can't win 50 games!!! That's hillarious.

A.I. is the most overrated player ever. For a guy who is called "one of the best ever." He has only 2 50 win seasons to his credit. I think the Larry, Bird, MJ, Wilt and so on averaged 50 win seasons and routinely produced 60 win seasons.

A.I. is overrated. He should have never been labeled a franchise player. Even as a #2 in Denver he still will spoil a team full of talent.

Great individual stats though...good job, NOT.

im sorry dude but the lakers are a whole different monster than the mavericks... first off, the mavericks lack the big men the lakers have, second off, you cant compare dirk with kobe, kobes on another level. Having said that, kobe will not choke against a warrior team and therefore its is not likely the warriors would beat LA like they beat dallas last year. Lakers would dominate.

as much as I love the Mavs...I have become increasingly disappointed in the front office move to get Jason Kidd this season. I don't think that they've really rebounded from getting toasted by the Warriors last year. I can't stand the Warriors...but I can't fault the way they play. The Mavs used to be the same way...

Good article Mr. Kahn...it does shed some well deserved attention to the Warriors and all they've accomplished this season. The West is so competitive that they often get overlooked as "just another 8th seed" when in reality they are a mere 4 games out of FIRST in the West. I seriously think they could give anyone a serious test in the first round provided they keep their cool and don't let the tempers get the best of them like they did last season.

Folks don't pay to much attention to what CEJAM has to say maybe he didn't get the memo that the Lakers aren't the only team in the NBA, and the only team possibly going to the playoffs. His prediction about Denver taking over the eight spot is not written in stone. Plus the Warriors are playing a hell of alot better then Denver. I guess you didn't get that memo either! Anyone that knows me know that I try to be fair about my assestment regarding all the teams that are in the NBA including the players. He's very bias and feels that every article should be about his Lakers. I'm a Warrior fan for life win or lose! The Warriors are a good team they have a few kinks that need to be worked out and in the near future that will happen. Defense need alittle work but as far as their standing in the Conference I like where we are. Alot of folks under estimated us last season and maybe doing the same this year. I don't see a Championship team for us just yet but it is in the making, give us some time.

Hey guys,

Since CEJAMCP's oddly bitter remarks was so high in the comments, I was plesantly surprised to see the reaction from so many others.

I don't quite understand the vitriol that comes when a positive feature is written about an obviously good team that has made great strides in the past 18 months.

It's obviously not a knock on anybody else - particularly when it highlighted the special performance coming from Monta Ellis, a rare guard coming right out of high school in the second round to be so successful before he even turns 22.

Thanks for recognizing that. When I want to rip somebody, it will be obvious and worthy of some anger in return I'm sure. But a story like this ... c'mon it's a feature of well-deserved recognition.

AND NOW YOU THINK THEY CAN BEAT THE LAKERS IN THE POST LIKE THEY BEAT THE MAVS LAST YEAR, 1ST OF ALL....THE MAVERICKS ARE KNOWN FOR CHOKING IN BIG GAMES...SO HOW DOES THAT MAKE GOLDEN STATE GREAT, SURE THEY PLAYED WELL IN THAT SERIES BUT THAT WAS IT.

AND...THEY WONT BEAT THE LAKERS EITHER...EVEN IF THEY ARE THE 8TH SEED AND "MY" LAKERS ARE THE 1 SEED..

SAVE IT WARRIOR FAN, YOUR NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING ON THE LAKERS LEVEL....LET ALONE MINE....

NOW HERE IS WERE ALL THE "SMART" PEOPLE RESPOND AND SHOOT FROM THE HIP.....GO FOR IT PANOCHAS

NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE 8TH SEED WARRIORS EXCEPT FOR THE LOSERS FROM THE NORTH SIDE, SAME LOSERS THAT HAVE BEEN CHEERING THE QUEENS UNTIL THE LAKERS PUNCHED THEM IN THE MOUTH.....KEEP SWITCHING LOSERS, YOU WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD AS ME!!!

TS#20,

Yeah, it is interesting what Nellie has done with his style. Honestly, I've never been a big fan of his because of that ego. If he sticks around, he'll break Lenny's record. But keep in mind the guy has never even coached a team to the Finals in 28 years entering this season.

It's reflective of his ego accepting a conventional halfcourt style to win in the playoffs, and desire to be considered a mastermind doing it his own way. Had I not seen him manipulate the media for so many years, his uniqueness probably wouldn't have bothered me.

Nonetheless, his teams are always fun to watch and dangerous - just never of championship fiber, which is odd considering he was a role player on five NBA champions in Boston. Thanks for writing.

First off all YOU HAVEN'T WON A DAMN THING SO FAR. (You like that caps lock? Does it really help prove your point?) Stop acting like you just won a championship. Wake up boy, we're in the middle of March. Look at the Mavs last year, they were a #1 seed with one of the best records of all-time and they got beat down by the Warriors. So if I were you I wouldn't be putting all your eggs in your basket like an ####...

And if Kobe is so damn great why has he yet to lead the Lakers (without his b33ch Shaq) past the first round!? Hell Baron did it without a legitimate big man. Why couldn't your boy Kobe do it?

And you're right no one is at your "level" because no one here is as big of an #### as you...

Sure the Lakers may be the team to beat but stop for a mintue and look around at the other teams in the league. I don't think anyone is saying that the Warriors is going to beat the Lakers other then yourself. What they are doing is giving praise to some of the Warrior players for there fine effort of play. Since when does anyone care about the 8th seed, you ask? Since last year when the Warriors spanked the Mavericks.

Judging by your picture, I'd say you are a Lakers fan and I for one hope for a Warriors-Lakers first round matchup so history can repeat itself.

Next time read the article before you spout off, dude. The Warriors have been one of the best teams in the league since their 0-6 start and by far the most fun to watch.

Seriously let's get it straight the warriors can't beat the LAkers in 7 game series.Theres no reason to waste their time on a story about the warriors. The warriors have sucked for a long while and still suck.I'm just keepin it tru the lakers are way to deep for warriors.Me reading this blog is time I will never get back.Jordan Farmar will be a better player than Monta Ellis. The LAkers will have a championship run of atleast 4 years.Get it straight LA is to sik

actacualy if I had to pick between the lakers and warriors I would take the warriors
only because Bynum has been hurt and that knee could still be hurt come playoff time
We dont know how well all of the position shifting for the lakers will go with Pau going to PF and Odom to SF
we still dont know if Pau and Bynum will mesh together

He's very bias and feels that every article should be about his Lakers. I'm a Warrior fan for life win or lose! The Warriors are a good team they have a few kinks that need to be worked out and in the near future that will happen. Defense need alittle work but as far as their standing in the Conference I like where we are. tell something about me ,i like make friend on the internet ,as a cute signer girl ,want a really man to share my mind and my video on my dating site #### check my name here chrizzz..

Well, props to the Rockets for winning a road game, Warriors tough all the way proving how close all the West teams are right now. The home and home series with the Lakers aand Warriors should be great to watch.

wwillmon12, there really isn't much concern about "how the players will mesh" in Lakerland, all the players are already schooled in the offense, it will be seamless in that regard. Of course, there are concerns about how effective Bynum will be, but the Lakers are the team no one wants to face in the playoffs!

SoCal.... You and CEJAM... Have a problem with reading folks comments. I don't think anyone of us are saying that the Warriors is going to beat the Lakers in a seven games series. We are just giving accolades to our players for their fine effect of play. What I don't understand is who are you to say that the Warriors don't deserve a article written about them? If Jordon was so hot he would be a starter like Montel but I'm not going to go back and forth with you on that issue. Everyone is entitle to their opinion. Well here in the Bay the Warriors are ILL and I'm just keeping it real! Maybe next time instead of jumping to conclusion read folks comments because reading is fundamental. Everyone does it.

CEJAMCP Common you gotta be kidding right? Why would someone write about an 8th seed? Cause its way better then writing about a no seed that you Nuggets are? They have talent on there team and dont know how to get it together. Kind of like you not knowing how to get your facts together. Must be a Colorado thing with the altitude and all. Another thing thing since when does anyone care about an 8th seed. Well I would have to say since Golden State (8th seed) last year whooped on the number one seed. And whoever gets the number one seed this year better watch out cause the warriors are for real kid. Get your act together and stop hating on good journalism. Facts are facts and the nuggets might be the 8th seed in the playoffs only because the warriors will be 7th or 6th.

Kahn -- Nellie never had Championship quality teams in 29 years of coaching. You must have forgot his stint in Milwaukee in the last 70's and early 80's. If Milwaukee would have stayed in the Western Conference in the 80's they would have made it to the finals at least twice. Back in the day it was the Bucks, 76'ers and Celtics in the East and basically the Lakers in the West.

His ego got him ran out of Milwaukee? Tell me a sucessful person in any field who doesn't have a big ego? It was the Senator that ran him out of town. He did the same thing with George Karl. Another sucessful coach with a big ego.

Nellie greatest contributions to the game of basketball: point foward, fish ties, and coaching in sneakers with the converse logo until the NBA said he couldn't and then going with electrical tape over the logo. Then to screw the senator over he gives us Robert "Tractor" Trailor for some German 19 year old kid name Dirk.
