Addition by subtraction has led to multiple wins in Utah
Jan 31, 2008 | 8:14AM | report this
Sometimes it only requires a little tweak to figure out what throws everything out of whack. In the case of the Utah Jazz, it’s almost as if coach Jerry Sloan marched them en masse to a chiropractor for a visit.

Moments later, general manager Kevin O’Connor paid the bill … problem solved.

You see, nobody could have thought the back-page trade of Gordan Giricek and a No. 1 draft pick to Philadelphia for Kyle Korver could be so significant to turning the Jazz around. In fact, tossing in the draft choice seemed a bit much for a pretty one-dimensional shooter like Korver.

But sometimes we forget when assessing deals that occasionally it is every bit as much about the subtraction as it is the addition, and sometimes more. The result has been a 12-2 run since the deal, a six-game winning streak overall and 10 in a row at home after Wednesday’s win over the Knicks. Consequently, they’re now alone atop the Northwest Division.

That wouldn’t have surprised anybody coming into the season, but nobody could have anticipated the circuitous route it would require.

With a young team coming off a trip to the Western Conference finals, a Northwest Division title and a 51-win season, expectations were high for the Jazz coming into this season. With an All-Star-caliber duo of point guard Deron Williams and power forward Carlos Boozer – eminently capable of double-doubles on a nightly basis – they constantly drew comparisons to John Stockton and Karl Malone, plus they had all the pieces around them to be a serious contender in the stout West.

And they were seemingly fine, beginning the season at 7-2, with second-year guard Ronnie Brewer inserted into the starting lineup and All-Star-caliber stat-filler Andrei Kirilenko apparently over the psychological issues that weighed him down a good portion of last season. Oh, sweet-shooting center Mehmet Okur was nicked up a bit, but that seemed to be only a temporary hurdle. He’d be back, grabbing rebounds and draining treys. That’s not to mention the rugged duo of Matt Harpring and Paul Millsap giving opponents whiplash off the bench.

They certainly missed guard Derek Fisher, who was sympathetically let out of his contract by owner Larry Miller so he could move to Los Angeles where his infant daughter’s cancer could be treated. Not only as a terrific player, but as a leader, Fisher left a hole. But Sloan figured moving Brewer into the starting lineup and bringing Giricek off the bench would help their depth – plus relatively young journeymen Jason Hart and Ronnie Price could be developed in the backcourt as well.

But none of it struck Giricek very well. He viewed himself as a starter, or at least deserving of major minutes. Sloan, in his inimitable way, viewed him as someone who needed to earn his minutes and contribute or he wouldn’t play at all. And anyone who has been around the NBA understands it’s easier to fool with Mother Nature than Jerry Sloan.

The problem began to rip away at the team internally, affecting the chemistry on the floor and the general attitude in the locker room. After a solid start, they lost 14 of their next 23 games, falling to 16-16 – including a stunning 3-11 decline. With the Nuggets inconsistent with injuries but solid enough to win with explosive scoring, and the Trail Blazers one of the great stories of the season with a sensational run, the Jazz had fallen off the map into third place.

So they shipped out Giricek, presumably with Sloan heaving his bag at him out the door. On came Korver. Suddenly, the air was cleared. Giricek had been averaging less than 4.0 points a game and twice as many headaches. Korver’s hustle and superior shooting eased the pain. He’s averaged 9.9 points, dives after loose balls and at least tries to defend with the intensity demanded by Sloan. Meanwhile, Giricek is producing even less for the Sixers and is mulling over offers to play in Europe.

Okur is now back and healthy, Williams has had five consecutive double-double games – averaging 19.1 points and 9.5 assists while improving his shooting to .515 from field. Boozer is in All-Star form at 22.4 points and 10.6 rebounds, Kirilenko remains a fantasy player’s dream boxscore-stuffer in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, while Brewer continues to raise his level of play just as they imagined when drafted him in the first round out of Arkansas in 2006.

The result is they’ve won 12 of 14 overall and posted the longest home winning streak in nine years, showing the kind of confidence that pushed them into the 2007 conference finals in the first place. It would take hours to decipher whether it’s because of what Korver brings to the table as opposed to Giricek, or just a matter of addition by subtraction.

But from the Jazz point of view, who cares? It worked.

Any true Jazz fan knew that they need a defending big man and a good outside shooter. They got one of those and once they get the other, they'll be hard to stop.

Giricek was a problem, but not nearly to that extent. Kyle Korver is the best thing to happen to the Jazz since we drafted D-Will over Chris Paul.

well, i think you are right in this article. adding korver not ony got rid of ridiculous gordon giricek it also gave us someone who can close games with superior outside shooting. i can hardly wait for the playoffs

Although their numbers were similar when they were traded, Giri and Korver were totally different players. Giri did not scare anyone and was never in games during the clutch due to his poor defense and worse decisions. Korver is such a dead eye that other teams have to respect him and keep an eye on him whenever he is on the court. Giri's defense consisted of him darting his hand in and out of the opponent's face until they raise up and he gets a foul. Genius. Korver fouls a lot but at least they are usually good fouls and he is usually pretty good on keeping position and rotating, unlike Giri. Whoever poo pooed this trade at the beginning obviously has never watched the two players involved and only looked at the stats which don't tell hustle, defense, or smarts.

Dang straight Korver was the best move since D-will over Chris Paul. Korver is the Jeff Hornesek (or however you spell his name) of the Jazz of late. Just like last year the Jazz might get lucky again and have the Mavericks beat out by a Cinderella team and move onto the Finals this year. This is an exciting team.

I have been wanting Korver on the Jazz for the last year. I heard over the summer that he, and igudola was an "untouchable" of the 76ers. I cant believe the Jazz got him for so cheap! Just another piece to get this team to championship caliber. 1 more left, a solid backup center that can play D.

I can tell you one thing, I've been agonizing over Giricek since last year...damn, I hated that guy. I couldn't pray hard enough that the Jazz would get ride of him in the offseason. Let's just say I was less than happy at the start of the season regarding him. However, at LEAST they got it right before this season was too late. That guy made me cringe EVERY time he had the ball! I LOVE Korver's stroke. Now we just need someone better than Collins. Oh, keep watching Almond grow I was just as happy with that draft pick as I was with Williams.

Honestly I'm amazed that Philly would get rid of him and for what, an okay player at best. It's a huge pick up for Utah in a stacked West. The second half of the season should be exciting for Sacramento as well.

I can understand Jazz fans being happy with the team's success, but I wouldn't exactly praise the Deron Williams draft pick instead of Chris Paul. In case you haven't noticed, the Hornets have a better record than the Jazz. Both are top notch point guards, and any team would be happy with either one of them.

The Williams over Paul pick was the best thing that happened to the Jazz, not because Williams is a better player, but because he is a better fit. Paul would've done great here too I think, but they both got into the system that best fit their style. I've really liked the Korver trade, he's been a huge help to the Jazz. Also, Collins is probably the most underrated player the Jazz have. He has a terrible shot, but he plays pretty good defense, which really helps when the opponent has a man bigger and stronger than Okur.

Tuche my friend, Collin is underrated. He has actually impoved his jumper this year, but its his work ethic and tuff play that Sloan loves. He always brings the same thing and never complains about playing time. CP3 is the ish, but D-Will is going to punish the west's for not getting on the All Star team.

Korver is so good to have at the end of games because he can make his free throws. How many games did the Jazz lose in December because of the missed free throws? Korver has filled a big hole. Hopefully K-Fes can continue to mature and the Jazz will have a good defender at the 5.

The only thing that is wrong with the Jazz is Deron Williams. He would be the number one point guard in the league except one minor issue. He never plays defense. He is extremely fast but he is usaully put on the worst scorer(unless it's Ben Wallace)and they still destroy him. Besides that he is the best point guard in the world.

maconator, I have no idea what you are talking about. True, Williams D isn't extraordinary, but holding Tony Parker to 5 points isn't something easy.

I hate to break it to you Jazz fans but D-will is not going to resign with the jazz. He hates cold weather, and after his recent All-star snub he will search elsewhere for a team that is in the national spotlight more. He thinks he is an All-star and that a small market like Utah is holding him back. Congatulations on your new starting point guard RONNIE PRICE!!!

Loved the trade Giricek waz garbage. Especially with the way the jazz have been playing the past 2 seasonz, which is alot of games going down the wire, korver iz a HUGE addition to the jazz with hiz clutch shooting. Hez proved hiz worth in a number of games already. Korver keep it up much love from west valley utah

I'm pretty sure that williams is going to resign with the Jazz. He knows he is as or even more vital to this team as Boozer is. Without Williams, Boozer doesnt do as well. Although Utah is a small market it is growing in the national spotlight since last years run. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the Jazz can offer Williams more money (upwards of 20 million overall) sooner, and for more years than can any other team. So I think Williams will have 84 million reasons to resign with the Jazz. Also as Steve Nash gets older, Williams realizes that the All star game is going to be reoccurring. And, Dwill also has a supporting cast that is just 1 piece away from a serious repeat title contender. He loves to win, and I think that trumps being in cold weather, or being in the national media (like New York, where it is still cold).

Mike Kahn I think you are the only one who pays attention to basketball who didn't think Korver going to Utah would be an immense help. First of all Korver at least is going to produce. Giricek didn't even play a bunch of games this season...he was a pariah for Utah and they got rid of him. In addition, Sloan's system has always needed a sweet shooting guard ala Hornacek with Stockton and Malone. Korver is that guy his size at about 6'6 6'7 is an added plus. Now only if he played better D...

The jazz were losing games in December for two main reasons. Zone defenses, and missed free throws. The Jazz missed free throws late and the Jazz offense could not execute in the 4th quarter against a tough zone D, ie: Portland…(2 of the jazz Dec loses were to Portland). Kyle Korver has helped the Jazz with these 2 big problems. He spreads out the defense because of his ability to hit threes even if he is missing them and he hits free throws. Funny how such a small change can make such a huge difference.

DWill isn't just a better fit for the Jazz, he is a better player. Chris Paul is more talented, but I've watched him several times and felt like he plays as though he's playing in the All-Star Game, while Williams seems to be playing for a championship. It's the same difference between Vince Carter or Tracy McGrady vs. Manu Ginobili or Richard Hamilton--- or Dominique vs. Jordan or Bird. Not everything in sports is about numbers. Just ask the Patriots and Spurs.

WHOA!! D-Will never plays defense? Did you watch him totally shut down Tony Parker the other night jacknut? He stays with Iverson step by step when he tries all his cute little moves. I actually think D-Will plays tough defense. No ignorant comments. If you don't know your #### then don't talk.

I love all this Chris Paul D-Will ####. When the Jazz started 13-5 and also went to the conference finals every analyst said D-WILL IS BETTER. The Jazz struggle a bit, and now Paul is better? I even saw something on Nba fastbreak had a choice of who they would take as point guard to start their team today. 2 of 3 picked not Chris Paul but yes, Deron Williams, the other one picked Steve Nash (he missed the point, Nash is older and only has a couple years left in him) since Nash is the best right now. All-star game or not, means nothing. Brandon Roy made it over Ginobili and Williams, do you think he is better than both of them? I think not. How does D Wade make the all-star game, his team has won about as many games as the Miami Dolphins did.

I agree with most on the D-Will over Chris Paul. Far better move for the Jazz. This addition though of Kyle Kover is also excellent. Adding another good shooter along with Williams and Boozer is just what the Jazz need. Though another good addition would be J.J. Reddick. I think he could fit the Jazz style of play also and coach Sloan would definatly use him. That would be an awesome addition also, but any true Jazz fan knows we still need that dominate center and if Shaq is unhappy in Miami, if i were coach Sloan i would be telling Larry Miller do whatever it takes to sign him in the off season then imagin how good Utah would be. They would be the dominate force in the west with a line-up like that.

I hated Korver leaving Phily but I understood it. Top draft picks at the position needing evaluation on a team going no where. Giri was a right off for next year so they could pick up more cap room. He wont be on the sixers or any team for that matter. He is worthless.

Cardinalsin your an ####. D-Will is the Utah Jazz. He knows that and he is being compared to one of the best point guards to ever play. Why would he go from a place where he is the star the franchise and on a team on the verge of becoming unstoppable with one more addition. For a stupid all star spot. He knows he will be in the all star game next year and the jazz starting point guard for years to come and have his jersey hung up in the rafters right next to stocktons. Your a complete fool and watch basketball before you start writing stupid #### comments.

Exactly! Williams schooled Paul...again!

For the guy that said we need J.J. Reddick, we have Morris Almond...who is the leading scorer in the D-league. This is his rookie year, and he's growing big time, and I wouldn't be supprised to see the Jazz bring him up for the playoffs.

Yeah great move. Giriceks offense was ok at first i guess, but didnt it always seem like, when giricek was in the game, the jazz only had 4 defenders? Even though Jerry routinely put Giricek on tough players, i think hes just a little stuck on himself. Bring in those who want to be here i say! Go Kyle!

No doubt adding Korver was a plus for Utah. His out side shouting capabilities will take pressure off D and Boozer. Still Utah (Boozer) will have to learn to play defense if they go very far in the finals. Boozer will also have to learn to pass the ball to Korver when he is wide open instead of taking bad shots inside.

Having Korver is a great fill for the jazz he fulfills the reincarnation of the former western conf. champs line up of stockton,Malone, and Horncek; If I not mistaken He was also brought in from Philly and helped them get to the Finals, sound familiar. Seems like the pieces are back in place for another run don't be surprised if it happens. Coach Sloan definitely has vision.
