You are the coach in Game 7 of the 2008 Finals, no time left on the clock, and you’re down two, but your point guard got fouled hard driving on the final play of the game, landing on his shooting shoulder.
He can’t go to the free-throw line.
You need two free throws to extend the game.
And we’ll give you the unique opportunity to pick any player in the game today to take that game into overtime.
Who’s it going to be?
There are lots of ways to look at it. There are players who thrive in those situations, although not particularly great free-throw shooters, and great free-throw shooters who suddenly get leaden elbows as the clock ticks down.
Just looking at this year’s percentages, Peja Stojakovic, Ben Gordon and Ray Allen are the top three with any number of attempts. Although Stojakovic is on the low end in free throws taken, and he’s faded so dramatically from being considered a big-time player, it’s hard to put him in that category. Gordon is really streaky, and Allen, although consistently one of the all-time greats overall, has had his moments of shooting blanks in clutch.
The next two on the list for this year’s numbers, and not coincidentally – any numbers career-wise, really – there are Chauncey Billups and Steve Nash. They may just be the top two on everybody’s list, although Nash has never been to the Finals, while Billups has excelled in the Finals twice.
Or you might even consider a guy who has never been a star and probably wouldn’t even be in the discussion unless looking at the numbers this season. He is certainly tested over time in the Finals and always a supreme free-throw shooter in the clutch – ageless Derek Fisher. Two others bigger stars in a comparable shooting range under those circumstances would have to be Richard Hamilton and Manu Ginobili.
A couple of rising talents are also high among this season’s producers from the charity stripe, Caron Butler and Chris Paul. Butler has shattered the myths about his inability to hold up physically in this league, with his physical and mental toughness taking his talent to All-Star level. Paul is simply becoming a star in every aspect of the game, but has no postseason experience, which will change this season provided the Hornets stay on course.
Although it’s a ridiculous reason to even consider them, the two best-shooting big men ever – Dirk Nowitzki and Yao Ming -- are right there statistically. But Dirk has gotten pulverized for postseason struggles, and Yao never gets far enough to see it through. Nonetheless, they are great, great shooters from the free-throw line and otherwise.
Then you have the three best perimeter players in the game – Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Bryant is clearly the best of this bunch, if only because he’s the best pure shooter and so unflappable. James’ free-throw woes have been well documented, and with so many other choices, he’d be tough to justify. The same goes for Wade, particularly since he’s shooting free throws at a career low this season.
That’s a top 10, and just for good measure, and a purely competitive standpoint, it would be tough to ignore Allen Iverson or Baron Davis. Iverson is much more battle-tested in the postseason, while Davis is certainly approaching that status. Statistically speaking, though, Iverson is just a better free-throw shooter.
As for me, well, I didn’t have to go very far down the list. I’m going with Mr. Big Shot – Billups. He’s been there, done that, and he’ll do it again. He’ll take you into overtime every time.
As you said, Kobe is the best in this bunch. He's been in the Finals three times and shared the limelight with Jordan in their thrilling All Stars Game a few years back. But you are right in choosing Billups also because he's cool and has the ability to summon the right nerves when the time comes. Also, Detroit probably has the better chance than the Lakers to make the Finals.
How about if the Celtics will be in that situation? Or the Suns? Maybe I'll try Pierce if Ray Allen is the one with sore arms. And the alternative to Nash? Maybe Marion. (Wow, 20 three pointers for the Suns in their last game.
Your point guard is fouled and injured with no time left, and you get to pick any player to be on the team to shoot the two shots? That is just too likely a scenario, and the statistics for free-thow shooting are too readily available, for this game to be any fun.
We can come up with a much more interesting and unlikely hypothetical than this one. Let's say there are 0.5 seconds left and you're down four against the Miami Heat, who are over the limit when Shaq pulverizes your point guard, sending him out of the game. The only chance of winning the game is for the free-throw shooter to make the first shot, and then intentionally miss the second such that your team gets back the ball, and makes one pass to a player behind the three point line who makes the trey.
Pick the shooter, the guy to get the rebound, and the guy who shoots the trey. What player has enough control to make the first and miss the second in a manner that gives you a shot at the rebound. Who is quick enough and savvy enough to get in position for the rebound and kick the ball out to the three-point shooter. And who is the three point shooter? You are allowed to have the same guy shoot the free throw and take the trey, if you wish.
Gotta go with Kobe shooting the game tying free throws, hes clutch and unflappable and if there is a chance he misses the second, there is no one that will get to the miss quicker or leap higher for it, for a chance at a putback.
I like chaunceys teamate rip hamilton ALMOST as much as chauncey in that situation...even though nash isnt really battle tested as far as being in the finals,he has an unbelievable shooting touch from anywhere on the court...1.billups 2.rip 3.nash
I have to go with Kobe taking those crucial free throws. He is just clutch and has been in those situations before. Billups is a close 2nd with Nash coming 3rd.
Free throws, Bi Bi Bi Bi Billups of course.
Crucial shot, gotta go to Kobe. The guy definitely knows how to finish a game, EVEN, if he started off as the worst on the court.
I'll go with Billups with this one. Absolutely no emotions involved when taking big shots or FTs for that matter. Kobe is also good but he's eagerness to be "the man" sometimes gets in the way. Third choice would be Caron. This man is focused. With this guy on the team, who needs arenas.
For me it kinda makes me wonder if Kahn isn't from Detroit or at least is a big fan of the Pistons. Not because he would choose Billups in this situation, I think Billups is a great choice and would probably choose him myself.
Its the timing of the article. The Pistons have a reasonalby big game inwhich Billups brinks on 3 FT and then bricks a 3pt shot and then we see this article.
Mr. Kahn, trying to boost Billups ego after laying brick at the end of the game or just bummed at the outcome yourself and want reasurance that Billups is still the right man.
Of course he still has it. Everyone has a bad game.
killer Ray, Ray Allen look at his career big shot after big shot and when he misses a free throw it is almost a shock my miss once in a blue moon but not likely and yes over billups
Ya Billups. Was that before or after he missed two at the line and then air mailed a three at the end of the Celtics game. Then after they lose he says they were playing like it was any other home game...whatever.

nao digga...I 'd want Kwame Brown shooting the free throws, Kobe grabbing the long brick rebound, and stepping behind the 3 point line to send the game to OT. I was at the game last year at Staples when this scenario actually happened against the Rockets. Too bad lakers ended up losing in OT.
Isn't the rule that if the injured player can't take his free throws the opposing coach gets to pick a player from the fouled guys bench?
As the world's leading Kobe fan, I might suggest that if it's a matter of two free throws to send it into overtime, I would be inclined to go with Derek Fisher this year.
Everyone here has it wrong. If I had to pick one NBA player to sink the free throws, it'd be Darko. Why you ask? Because Darko can dunk from the free throw line from a standstill, he just doesn't feel like doing it.. or anything else!
If I didnt have to pick an NBA player, it'd be Pootie Tang. Who do you think taught Darko how to dunk?
Yeah how is Horry not even on Kahn's list. Robert Horry is the clutchest shooter in history. Look at the 2005 NBA Finals. If i had to vote it would be Horry from three land and Ginobili on the Line.
Robert Horry?? Your kidding right. He has made a name for himself making some very big shots but he is not a great foul shooter and foul shooting with the game on the line and making a field goal are totally different. It would have to be Nash or Billups then Kobe
as far as who I want down 10-12 with a few minutes to go, it has to be Kobe. He is the most explosive scorer there is and has that special swagger and confidence to tear a teams heart out. he loves those types of challenges and guys fear what he is capable of. He can score the 3 ball and create 3 point plays the old fashioned way.
Billups is clutch as is Allen and Kobe, however to mention Lebrons name as a clutch freethrow shooter is a joke. It's the one real weakness he has. I also think Wade should be in there. His performance at the line against the Mavericks is what won it for the Heat.
Lastly calling Dirk and Yao Ming the two best shooting big men of all time is a Joke. Bird was a big man and only an inch shoter then Novitski and lest we forget Bob, Mcadoo who was considered at one time the best shooting big man of all time also, except he led the league in scoring 3 times and was clutch at the line.
how bout d wade? he made the most clutch free throws that ive ever seen in game 3 of the 2005 nba finals to put the heat ahead of the mavs by 1 point. i wouldnt take him no. 1 but easily no. 3.

I thought everyone knew about Mr. Big Shot!!! No question about it!!!
Big Shot Bob??? I didn't know we were talking about the old timer's league...that's like saying Cousy, Clyde, Big O or Bing...Big Shot Bob..please!! Luckiest man in BB..right place at right time..he does know when to pick a team and when to leave a team.
I'm not really sure who I would want to shoot those free throws, Nash, Kobe, Lebron etc.
I do know who I couldn't pick to shoot those free throws in those final moments, because he probably wouldn't be in the game.
I'm talking about someone who is a lock for the Hall of Fame according to some people and sadly, they are probably right.
I'm talking about someone who many consider the greatest ever to play his position. This I don't agree with.
How can the greatest player ever to play his position not be in the game during crunch time? Very simple really. This future HOF'er is someone who never worked on this part of his game, because in his mind free throws are irrelevant.
Of course, I'm talking about the Big Bystander. Shaquille O'neal. The "legendary" Shaquille O'neal. The "sitting on the bench at crunch time" Shaquille O'neal.

You give that scenario 2.5 at least and I think you might be able to pull it off. Realistically, I think I would have Nash do the free throws. (I am bias but who else has the ball control) KG would be the one, maybe with Marion, to get the rebound and kick it out to Reggie Miller. If it has to be a current player, I pick Gilbert Arenas for the shot.
