Somewhere the spirit of the late Red Auerbach was smiling behind a fat stogie that was burning brightly.
In one of those odd quirks of fate, when his Celtics whipped up on the Lakers 110-91 Sunday, it not only raised the record of the runaway Celtics to 26-3, but prevented Lakers coach Phil Jackson from passing Auerbach’s 938 career wins – seventh all-time on the coaching list – while the two are tied with nine NBA championships apiece.
The irony couldn’t possibly have been lost considering this had the vibe of the first meaningful game between these two franchises since the Lakers won the 1987 Finals over the Celtics.
Unfortunately, this game was never close, similar to the way the Celtics won by 13 in Boston in November. It was the sixth consecutive win for the Celtics, making them 4-0 on their first Western Conference swing of the season, and the outcome spelled the end of the Lakers' four-game winning streak. The Celtics are leading second-place Toronto in the Atlantic Division by 11.5 games and Detroit by 2.5 games in the race for top seed in the East. Meanwhile, the Lakers slipped to 2.5 games behind the Phoenix Suns in the Pacific Division and the fifth-best record in the West.
Nonetheless, the Lakers marketed the game as if it were something extraordinary. Lakers legend Jerry West was introduced before the game as the team’s honorary captain, the Lakers wore throwback short shorts in the first half, and all that was missing was Bill Russell showing up as the Celtics’ counter to West in the Hall of Fame captain department.
No doubt the NBA has to be thrilled that the game had any significance at all, with the history of this rivalry. From the Finals memories that included the “Memorial Day Massacre” and the Bird-Magic sagas, no other matchup has compared to these two franchises – even though the Celtics won the first eight meetings in the Finals before the Lakers got the last two.
It was tradition and that’s what the NBA lost in the overt marketing schemes that have featured players instead of the teams. Although the Lakers have gotten off to a good start this season and have a bright future, they clearly don’t have the aura of now that the Celtics bring to the table.
And it’s only fitting that one of “Red’s Boys” from the 1980s genre, Danny Ainge, reconstructed this team into a powerhouse that looks eminently capable of winning it all. Led by superstar Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, who grew up in the shadow of the Lakers’ old “Fabulous Forum” in Inglewood, the Celtics took control of this game early and never relented. Coach Doc Rivers, who has pushed this team defensively, bottled up Lakers star Kobe Bryant with pressure defense, holding him to 6-of-25 shooting and 22 points.
The intensity was obvious from the outset, with Garnett sent to the locker room for stitches above the right eye in the second quarter, and that was reflective of the emotion considering seven technical fouls were called. Garnett continues his crusade toward a second MVP award with his versatile brilliance – 22 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals – and Pierce lit up the Staples Center with 33 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Considering the difficult times the Celtics have struggled through since their last title in 1986, it is something the NBA can build on and perhaps change this player-driven league into more of a team orientation. It always comes down to the players, but fans are more apt to rally around teams and their arch-enemies, as we see in baseball and football. It works in college basketball too.
Somehow the NBA has let that get away in the face of Michael Jordan and his Dream Team brethren. Sunday set up the first opportunity to rekindle some of that. The odds are enormous against the Celtics and Lakers meeting in the 2008 Finals, and who knows if and when it will ever happen again. But this was just a reminder of what it used to be.
The Eastern Conference has been so weak in recent years, it’s been tough to find. The Heat and Knicks had it going on for a brief period. And the one great rivalry at the start of the century fell apart three years ago in a brawl when the Pacers and Pistons ignited an entire crowd in the Palace of Auburn Hills – and set back the Pacers franchise to this day. The Lakers and Kings had a good one going early in the decade, and the Spurs and Lakers danced around it, too. Now the Mavericks and Spurs have something going on.
But not like the history of the Celtics and Lakers.
For one brief evening the feeling was back. All the memories were there – Russell was blocking shots, Havlicek filled the lane, and Sam was banking them in from everywhere. Elgin’s head was twitching on reverse layups and West was draining line-drive jumpers. And in the second half, Bird matched Magic’s passes and drives, Chief ran the lane for dunks and Kareem swished skyhook after skyhook.
The names, the faces and the numbers have changed, but the history of the Lakers and Celtics runs much deeper than the individuals, even though Jackson and Auerbach fostered their own rivalry with sniping in the later years.
It was still there Sunday, even if that puff of smoke wafted through the rafters posthumously.
Laker fan here. Congrats to the Celts but it would have been a better game without those officials. Yes we lost but Boston does not need help. Bad calls can throw a game in reverse. Nervertheless scoreboard.
Refs don't win games for a team when the score isn't even close, and they can't make Kobe play like a schmuck. Kind of like the first game the Celtics won against the Lakers this season, which also wasn't a mistake.
Was the officiating really in favor of Boston? No. You cannot cry foul on your own home court. Ray Allen got a tech for getting tackled! The reality is, the Lakers do not match up well with Boston. They still are a good team, but Boston presents too many matchup problems for the Lakers.
I tried not to go there but I guess I will. There was 2 calls involving Pierce that turned that game when it was a 6 point difference, That changed the game. Bball needs to have a review process. Make it so people cannot say anything. Remember Phoenix!
Sounds more like sour grapes to me. The Celtics just got the better of the Lakers in this game. The are the better team. Even if some of the Laker fans dont want to admit it.

How come in every sport when a team loses all we hear about is how bad the officials are. Just a bunch of whiny sore losers. Just face it, Boston teams are dominating the sports scene this year. Deal with it.
Seems like lately in every sport when a team loses the officials are blamed. Your team lost, deal with it instead of sounding like a bunch of whiny sore losers.
We got our azzs kickedb last night. Looks like Lakes will have problems with power teams. Second time the celtics made bynum disappear. A lot of easy misses and rim outs. Celtic defense impressive, but I feel they came out the gate to hard to early, will catch up to them in the playoffs when another level will be required. Detroit did it last year and lost to cleveland. Pistons backed off this year they will be ready. the Lakers have problem with power teams now, spurs, celts, those 2 right there will beat us in 7 game series but they are both old teams and in a year or 2 wont be a problem
I agree that the refereeing was AWFUL! Come on...Garnett got a foul for apparently hitting a Laker's hand so hard with his face that KG needed 4 stitches...maybe you think that should have been a flagarent foul too!!! Perk got a T for making a face at a Laker after he was fouled (not called of course) making a shot...didn't say anything, a T for just a look! Pierce gets tackled setting a pick and he gets called for the foul! This doesn't even include all the other times that the Celts were mugged underneath. What game were you watching? The Celts won, and won big, DESPITE the poor homer reffing AGAINST them, not because of it.
MY COMMENT: Lakers still have a ways to go. This is the type of b-ball that you will definitely expect come PLAYOFFS. Lakers should make a trade now to improve back and front courts. Trade Lamar, Sasha/Walton to get Jason Kidd. Then trade Kwame Brown and few other players to get Ben Wallace? I'm not really sure about the last trade, but it would seem Wallace is not happy in Chicago or is slightly injured. But now your LAKER STARTERS would be Kobe, Kidd, Ariza, Wallace, and Bynum. Bench would be Fisher, Farmar, Mihm, Radmanovic, Turiaf, and Karl. Lakers bench might be weak.
C'mon people, too early in the season for counting someone the greatest, or the worst. The Lakers lost the game because of their shooting percentage. The Celts were the better team last night, and remember, one has to play beyond penalties to win a game. The NBA is the worst league for crying about fouls which is why I don't actually watch many games, what a bunch of cry babies.
Play basketball and let the chips fall where they may.
First Celtics haters were crying because we had not played any western conference teams, now they are just hating and blaming the refs because we went 4-0 and had back to back games on the road. What else will the Celts have to do? Haters...
yea the lakers lost because of theyre shooting percentage oh wait the celtics opponents have the worst percentage than against any other team in the nba i wonder why
Do not blame the Lakers for losing yesterday’s game, nor should you blame the officiating. Sometimes officiating can be bad, but the better team for the day can still win, and Celtics were the better team, and probably will be for a while. The Celtics have too much power, and an impressive defense. The Lakers are a younger team apart from Kobe, fisher, and a few others. They will develop. Let’s give them a chance as we support the Celtics towards a ring for Garnet.
Many people (including me due to their lost to Cavalier & Piston) have been saying that the Celtics have not played the power houses in the west, i.e. spurs, suns, etc. We all should remember that Lakers who can not defeat the Celtics dealt with the suns mercilessly back and forth. They lost to spurs on Nov. 13, a month later, they defeated the spurs. Even the piston that handed the Celtics their first home loss of the season was defeated by the Lakers on Nov. 16.
This means that both teams that played yesterday have the capability of competing with any other team in the NBA. I love both teams (Lakers and Celtics), but I want garnet to get a championship ring for he has given a lot to the game and his community. It would be too bad for him not to get a ring.
So, go KG, go Celtics.

Take a win any way you can get one when you play the Lakers at home. There has always been Hollywood officiating there. It's as if the Lakers are supposed to win because the celebs are in the stands. One announcer said on TV once that Jack N. was telling the Lakers to play harder during a game. SO WHAT? LaLa Land has always been out of touch with reality.
Anyway I didn't watch it (although it would have been fun to see the Celts win that game), but yeah sometimes the refs do blow some calls that can swing the game. I do agree with that.
Quite honestly I don't think the Lakers, or most teams, match up well against the Celtics. I don't believe Kobe is a team player and if he was half as good as HE thinks he is, the Lakers would be a better team. Even Jordan didn't do well in the early years before he learned to pass the ball to the other players on his team. Yes, Kobe has talent. If and when he learns how to use it for bettering a team he could be dangerous. 1 vs 5 is fun to watch when watching streetball, but not in the NBA.
a loss is a loss is a loss; good thing about nba is you move on to the next game. That was the poorest officiating I have seen in a long time.
no excuse, but it is ok to comment on incompentce
even if the better team won that night.
i saw a post of the warriors. the warriors!. come on theyll never win anything just like the kings when they thought they could beat the lakers yeah right, i live in sac , lakers fan, and had to hear the fans of the city for a whole two years (whatever) complain about how there good , ok, but seriously warriors are fun to watch but have no shot of the top teams in the nba no doubt celts, one day close from now a 10th championship awaits the purple and gold go lakers and to all those haters keep postin' i wouldnt expect any less from u guys
You will never see a Lakers/Celtics rivalry like the one in the 80's...this was not just a rivalry, it was the beginning of the NBA. It was a tougher style of basketball back then and guys played hurt and you had pride at stake. Mr. Kahn, you look old enough to remember those days. Please do not compare or pretend that we have a new rivalry. Prior to the Boston Three Party, the Lakers put it to the Celtics year after year. As a Celtic fan, I am happy to see the Big Three but now you will begin to see a new dynasty in Boston and one that Kobe and the Lakers will remain envious of for a long time.
PS-As far as the Lamar O'dumb' hit on Ray Allen, totally uncalled for and this act of frustration is unacceptable. I know have more respect for Bill Laimbeer.
Watched the game last night. How many of you saw the courtside cam brought by Miller Lite? It was pretty cool. I really enjoyed watching the game WITHOUT the biased commentary and it was like being at the game.
Speaking of being at the game, the Lakers deserved to lose. Don't blame the refs. It was pretty evenly called.
One thing I noticed. Nobody on the Laker offense moved. Why? Kobe reverting to his ballhog self. Why is it that when the Lakers play a power team that Kobe thinks he has to play 1 on 4 basketball? Makes no sense. No wonder he shot 6 of 25.
It also affects Bynum. When Bynum doesn't get touches - he losees focus in the games. Lots of silly brainless fouls because he was stuck thinking "How come I ain't getting the ball?" "Why isn't anyone looking for me?"
One commentary that struck as true. Re: Garnett. Doc Rivers said, "Garnett brings a defensive attitude to this team that is contagious. Offense may not always work but defense is something that is guaranteed to keep you in games all the time." Wish Kobe would learn that. If he had a tough mindset on TEAM defense, maybe the attitude would spread. Unfortunately, when you jack up stupid shots, everyone around you gets desperate and stupid. The poor shot selections and refusal to run the offense (and run in the offense) led to too many poor shots and easy Celtic baskets.
We got smacked last night. Plain and simple. I saw some bad calls going both ways. Can't shoot that bad and expect to beat anyone in the NBA. Boston's D had alot to do with it but alot of the shots kobe was taking were no different than any other shots he takes. The guy always has a hand in his face. Celtic fans need to calm down tho. Proclaiming yourselves the new dynasty that kobe and laker fans will be jealous of is laughable at best. You have to win more than one championship with the current team you have. I don't hate on the celtics. They currently have the best team in the NBA. spurs and pistons come close. Suns and warriors not even in the conversation.
You have got to be kidding. There are a lot of people that are complaining about the ref'ing, legacy, etc. It's a game that was played last night there will be more games upcoming and there were no playoff implications last night. Lakers lost, Celtics won; it's over.
What should be realized is that the Lakers lost not due to bad officiating, history of players that no longer play, short shorts; the Lakers lost because they got out played by a team.
I live in LA and hear all the LA fans on the sports talk shows and complain about their team; yes the train has left and only the losers got off the train. Support your team and enjoy the ability to watch two NBA teams at the same arena.
I suppose that would be too hard to do when you are speculating about how the shorts affected the play. Does that mean all the wins the Lakers had during that era are fake? I suppose it is logical to say that is true, fake like your fans and the championships you are claiming false due to short shorts!
Maybe you are worried about speculating on why your Lakers aren't winning just like who shot JFK, murdered Marilyn Monroe, drugged Anna Nicole, and who is John Gualt?
The Lakers era is over, trade Kobe like he asked for, and stop personalizing the losses as if you had no life. Maybe that's the problem in LA anyways; fake boobs (breasts) and fake boobs (people)

This Celtics team looks positively scary. Never been a Paul Pierce fan, but this squad now looks to have enough firepower to offset Pierce's frequent dry spells and ball-hogging. Good to see a model citizen like KG doing well.
hey greasee, been here suffering for 20 years...we're back now & God bless Danny Ainge!!!
Lakers are a a team of prima donnas & thugs. They represent LA well!
The Lakers are a very good team!Great teams can
make it through bad calls, but referees control
the game. Why do you think they have point spreads?
No excuses for the Lakers we will see the Celtics
in the Championship if they make it!There are 82
games in a season. The Lakers were a good team last
year, but we had to many injuries. You see what were
doing healthy!KOBE should have been MVP the last 3
years, but politics are always involved. Why don't you see any KOBE posters in foot locker?Everyone knows he's the best player in the world.
Every team is capable of a poor game once in a while. That is why the NBA has a seven game playoff system. The Lakers had a poor game.
That's it, nothing more. Laker fans can still talk about recent championships. Celtic fans have to go back to the days when Boy George had a number one hit. Come on guys. Go back to your cave until you actually win something significant.
I love the no comments on the guy calling out you bandwagon celtic fans. Ive rooted for my suns for years and years. Even when we signed starbury!! Bet you are college football fans all of the sudden too.
Also love how he doesnt even mention the suns/spurs rivalry. This has to be the highest rated game everytime it comes on. Its the perfect clash of great offense with great defense. Add a bloody nose, knee to the nuts, and an infamous hip check into the mix. Voila! Perfect recipe for rivalry. Suns will take the lakers out first round, just like the last two years.
Like the other post said, they (Celtics) just need a strong Center and nobody will be able to stop them. For bench support, I was really hoping they would talk Reggie Miller out of retirement to shoot the lights out, but after watching a documentary on him, it seems highly unlikely.
Things have worked out well for me as a fan this season. KG came over from my second favorite team. He might be the hardest working player in the league--well at least in the top 10.
If being a bandwagon Celtic fan involves watching nearly every home and away game Larry Bird played then I'll be the bandwagon driver I guess. When Bird retired I knew the Celts were gonna have some rough years. When Len B. died, the hopes of continuing on as championship potential did as well for many years. During the Bird era, the Celtics seemed to shop for players at K-Mart. It's no wonder the big 3 played 40+ minutes a game. KC Jones didn't have a lot of options until there was a big lead. I've been a fan through the rotten years as well. I just didn't have much good to say so I haven't said anything at all. I had to lick my wounds like every other Celtic fan for quite a while. I celebrated the Celtics wins over the Lakers in the 80s and shook my head in disbelief watching Magic scoring with his baby hook shot. I guess its the Celtics turn again (finally). Well, guess what folks--the Celtics are back!
I feel that on this night the Lakers were just overmatched. But i think LA could be a great team if Kobe would be a leader and distribute. He takes way to many crazy shots. I also saw alot of dumb turnovers. and on the Boston side i am glad Paul Pierce is playing defense for a change. On Pauls offensive side. It was very good but i still get squeamish when he tries to drive into a double team. God only knows how many games he has cost the celtic with turnovers in the final 2 miutes of games he has played in. Lamar Odom is a thug who should be suspended for 2 games.KG is a class act. I wonder why odom didnt go ater KG?

Hey Suns fan. Don't you know the rules? Championship-less teams are not allowed to talk about rivalries. Rivalry starts with championship teams only. That was a cute post though.
