Fantasy Football Morning Update: Winslow ill, Saints pair makes progress
Oct 10, 2008 | 3:13AM | report this

Greetings from the Hilton Garden Inn in Tysons Corner, Va. I'm here on a business trip until this afternoon, and then I'll head home in time for my son's first birthday party tomorrow. If you're in Charlotte and want to come over to play in the inflatable jumpy castle, let me know.

On to the news:

  • Browns TE Kellen Winslow has missed two days of practice with an "illness." He visited a doctor yesterday, and the team won't say what's wrong. This sounds weird, and I'll have an update on Sunday. The Browns play Monday night, so keep some free-agent tight ends on your radar in case we don't know anything else by lineup time. This could be a spot for my suggested flier on Denver's Nate Jackson if nobody else good is available.
  • Saints WR Marques Colston and TE Jeremy Shockey are both trying to return a week earlier than projected from their injuries. Colston has had limited practice participation for the last two days, while Shockey practiced Wednesday and sat out yesterday. The Saints have the early game this week, so you'll know both players' status before you have to set lineups. Shockey's available in more than 31 percent of FOXSports.com leagues, and I found him on the wire in two of my leagues yesterday. Since I had Donald Lee in both cases, I'm pretty excited.
  • Sounds like there will be a Kevin Curtis appearance for the Eagles this week, but RB Brian Westbrook missed practice again.
  • You might see some headlines about Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin not being officially ruled out yet for this week, but he's still a longshot.
  • WR Joey Galloway is also a longshot for the Bucs, and Jon Gruden isn't optimistic about a Sunday return. I'm hoping for Galloway to come back so Jeff Garcia throws a pass longer than two yards this week.
  • Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck missed practice again yesterday with his bruised right knee, but it sounds like he'll play on one leg if necessary against the Packers. With Deion Branch probably out again, do you think Bobby Engram will catch 15 passes this week? How about 20?
  • The Panthers might get both their offensive tackles back this week, which should help the offense.
  • Vikings WR Bernard Berrian missed practice yesterday, but he's expected to play Sunday.
  • Same goes for Falcons WR Roddy White, who saw stars after a Wednesday collision with teammate Lawyer Milloy.
  • Signs point to Dan Orlovsky starting at QB for the Lions Sunday.
  • So, now Ronnie Brown is going to start throwing the ball out of the Dolphins' Wildcat offense? Fantastic.
  • Here's one of the usual "why Laurence Maroney isn'r running well again" stories. If you own him, reading it will just frustrate you.
  • This AP story says it's "likely" that Chargers WR Chris Chambers will miss Sunday's game against the Pats with a sprained ankle.
  • Don't forget your byes - Bills, Chiefs, Steelers, Titans

See you Sunday morning at 9 a.m. ET. Don't be late.

Fantasy Football Pre-Morning Update: Denver Duo Out
Oct 08, 2008 | 6:43PM | report this

Welcome to a special Wednesday night edition of the blog! Seriously, I have a 6 a.m. flight Thursday, so I thought it best to get this entry done before going to bed instead of waking up at 2:30 to get started. Most of today's news is in, anyway.

With that said, let's get going.

  • WR Eddie Royal will play for the Broncos, but RB Selvin Young and TE Tony Scheffler will miss the game against the Jags due to groin injuries. Look for Michael Pittman and Andre Hall to get carries, with Pittman getting his usual goal-line opportunities in addition to some of Young's regular work. At tight end, I saw Nate Jackson's name mentioned earlier in the week, and while he'd be a flier, he's apparently not a bad receiver on a team that likes to throw to its tight ends.
  • Bengals QB Carson Palmer is going to do the same thing this week as he did before the Cowboys game - keep practice to a minimum to save his arm, and hope he can go Sunday. The Bengals play the early game, so you'll know Palmer's status before you set your lineups.
  • Jeff Garcia took most of the snaps in practice Wednesday, and is expected to start for the Bucs against the Panthers this week. If he plays anything like either Tampa Bay QB played last week, plan on a stat line of 19-for-28 with 14 yards passing. If you hate touchdowns, the Panthers-Bucs tilt should be right up your alley.
  • RB Brian Westbrook didn't participate in the Eagles' Wednesday practice, so you're going to have to wait to confirm his status. Three fractured ribs would be tough to play through, but he should be fine with just two, right? Seriously, plan for an alternative if you're a Westbrook owner. On the bright side for the Eagles, WR Kevin Curtis might make his 2008 debut this week.
  • Saints PK Martin Gramatica is done for the season with a groin injury, and he'll be replaced by rookie Taylor Mehlhaff. With that offense, any kicker could have some value.
  • The fantasy gods are begging you to start all your Cardinals this week. The Cowboys secondary has been struggling, starting CB Terence Newman probably won't play thanks to an abdominal strain, and one of their backup corners just might have some more disciplinary trouble in his future after reportedly getting into an altercation at Ludacris' party over the weekend. I can't remember his name, but I think he's named after an old-school video game. Asteroid? Frogger? Space Invader? I'll get it sooner or later.
  • Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun isn't satisfied with the Ravens splitting carries between Willis McGahee and Le'Ron McClain, and wants to add Ray Rice to the mix this week against the Colts. Preston's blog is open for comments if you want to mobilize McGahee's fantasy owners and register your displeasure with this horrible idea. And I'm a Rutgers alumnus, for God's sake.
  • Lions QB Jon Kitna's status is uncertain for Sunday due to a back injury, meaning that either Dan Orlovsky (also injured) or Drew Stanton could get the start. Please, please don't knock anyone over in your mad dash to the waiver wire.
  • WR Laveranues Coles was limited in practice for the Jets on Wednesday. Hard to know yet if that means anything.
  • Injured Raiders RBs Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden both practiced Wednesday, and should play this weekend against the Saints.
  • LaDainian Tomlinson and Chris Chambers are hurting for the Chargers, but they're not expected to miss the Sunday nignt clash against the Pats.
  • Don't forget your byes - the Bills, Titans, Chiefs and Steelers are off this week.

See you Friday morning.

Fantasy Football Morning Update: Benson's role, Westbrook's ribs
Oct 07, 2008 | 3:22AM | report this

To all those Reggie Bush owners out there - your league gives you points for those two punt returns, right? Wow, was that an impressive performance.

On to the news:

  • As predicted yesterday, the Bengals are going to give RB Cedric Benson plenty of work this week, and he can thank Chris Perry's case of the fumbles for that. Against the Cowboys, Perry carried 13 times to Benson's 10, so we're looking at a committee at the very least. Grab Benson if you need a running back, but don't expect miracles.
  • Uh-oh. Eagles RB Brian Westbrook has a couple of cracked ribs. He's not sure if he'll be able to play this week, and couldn't sleep Sunday night because of the pain. This has "disappointing season" written all over it.
  • Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez left Sunday's game with a concussion, but it sounds like he'll be OK.
  • Lots of bad news from Denver, where rookie WR Eddie Royal will almost certainly miss this week's game, TE Tony Scheffler doesn't think he'll play, and RB Selvin Young's status if iffy. The playing-time beneficiaries of the trio's injuries would probably be Darrell Jackson (who's also injured), Nate Jackson and Michael Pittman, respectively.
  • After the bye week, Brodie Croyle will be back under center for the Chiefs. Against the Titans. Ugh.
  • Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic doesn't think WR Anquan Boldin will play this week against the Cowboys. That points to another busy day for Steve Breaston, who has 16 receptions for 199 yards in his last two games. Breaston's still available in a majority of FOXSports.com leagues.
  • Another day, another "no idea" on WR Deion Branch's status for this week. In a related note, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said that TE John Carlson needs to get the ball more after being held without a catch last week. Carlson's still a good tight end to own.
  • Many of you can welcome Giants WR Plaxico Burress back to your fantasy lineups this week after his one-game suspension. Then you can read this Q&A about the incident, and cross your fingers that Burress' next suspension will be when you play a weak fantasy opponent.
  • WR Sidney Rice didn't play last night for the Vikings, but Bernard Berrian picked up the slack with 110 yards and a TD.
  • Rams TE Randy McMichael is done for the season with a broken leg and torn ligaments. The tough-to-type Joe Klopfenstein will start in his place.
  • Titans WR Justin Gage is expected to play in Week 7.
  • Hey, remember future stud TE Vernon Davis of the 49ers? He had no catches in Week 5, and has five for 87 yards for the season. No more asking me if he should start until he actually does something, OK?
  • RB Justin Fargas should be ready to go against the Raiders this week, while teammate Darren McFadden is still nursing a turf toe.
  • Sounds like Rudi Johnson is unhappy in Detroit, even though Kevin Smith (not the guy who wrote Clerks) only had eight carries Sunday.
  • Don't forget your byes this week. The Bills, Chiefs, Steelers and Titans are off.

That's all for now. As a reminder, I'm skipping Wednesday mornings this season, since most teams are off on Tuesdays. I might get a head start Wednesday night on my Thursday entry due to a trip, but you'll see something here by Thursday morning. See you then.

Fantasy Football Morning Update: Schaub's late scratch
Oct 06, 2008 | 3:42AM | report this

I hope everyone's Week 5 went well. Mine was good, except for every time I thought about rejecting a proposed Brandon Jacobs-for-Phil Rivers deal last week. That ship has probably sailed, huh?

Speaking of the Giants, they are awesome. I'm calling a repeat right now - who's with me?

On to the news:

  • If you had Texans QB Matt Schaub, here's what happened yesterday: He spent Saturday night in the hospital due to a viral infection, and was apparently too weak to play. The news wasn't announced until sometime after noon ET, so if you had him in your lineup, you might not have known about it in time to make a change and are absolutely within your rights to send hate mail to the Texans. Moving forward, Schaub should still be a solid fantasy QB play, with home games against the Dolphins, Lions and Bengals over the next three weeks.
  • Bills QB Trent Edwards left yesterday's game with a first-quarter concussion. Edwards was apparently feeling better after the game. The Bills have a Week 6 bye, and I'll keep an eye on Edwards' status as Week 7 approaches.
  • Bucs QB Brian Griese left yesterday's game with an elbow injury. Jeff Garcia played okay in relief, and initial reports from Tampa are that we might have a good, old-fashioned QB controversy on our hands. Can it really be a controversy if neither QB was able to average 5.5 yards per attempt yesterday? Ugh.
  • The Panthers split their carries right down the middle again yesterday, with 20 for DeAngelo Williams and 19 for rookie Jonathan Stewart, but this time Williams got all three scores. If you're a Stewart owner, don't panic. Williams' TDs were from 10, 25 and 32 yards, so your guy should still be the short-yardage option.
  • Big night for the Steelers and RB Mewelde Moore, who had 99 yards rushing against the Jags. In other news from that game, please don't send me any more questions asking if you should start Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew, who had 107 yards against the Colts two weeks ago, and 32 yards or less in his other four games this season.
  • The Bengals are hinting that RB Chris Perry will keep his job, even after his fifth - fifth! - fumble of the season yesterday. I don't care what they're hinting about - if you need a back for some roster depth, grab Cedric Benson before he becomes the starter.
  • After being questionable all week, Eagles RB Brian Westbrook played, scored on the first drive, left during the next possession with a rib injury, came back pretty quickly, and touched the ball 13 times the rest of the day. Overall, he had 84 total yards and a TD. You'll take that, right?
  • Seahawks WR Deion Branch had his 2008 debut spoiled by a heel injury that might keep him out next week. Bobby Engram was his usual, short-reception self, with eight catches for 61 yards.
  • Wildcat! After 125 yards and a TD yesterday, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown has gone from sell-high candidate to a hold-on-tight stud.
  • Is anyone else concerned about LaDainian Tomlinson? After yesterday's 12-carry, 35-yard outing, he's averaging 3.7 yards per carry, with 331 yards rushing and four TDs in five games. That's not bad at all, but not befitting of the longtime fantasy monster. I hope that sore toe of his gets better fast.
  • Looks like the reports of Randy Moss' fantasy death were greatly exaggerated.
  • Here's a preview of tonight's Vikings-Saints tilt, which will see Drew Brees continue his quest for five kajillion passing yards this season. WR David Patten is out for the Saints, and while WRs Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice are both listed as questionable for the Vikes, they made the trip to New Orleans.

I could get into more detail about the week's fantasy performances, but my friend John Juhasz has already compiled his exhaustively comprehensive Takeaways here and here. See you tomorrow.

Fantasy Football Morning Update: Lineup Notes
Oct 04, 2008 | 7:00PM | report this

BREAKING NEWS (12:20 p.m. ET): QB Sage Rosenfels will start for the Texans in place of Matt Schaub (stomach problem). I'd still play other Texans as planned, but get Schaub out of your lineups.

Good morning, everyone. There's a lot going on today, so let's get to it.

(9:02 a.m. ET) Eagles RB Brian Westbrook participated fully in practice on Friday, and an AP story last night said he "appears likely to play" today against the Redskins. I'll have the inactive lists before the Eagles' 1 p.m. game, but it sounds like Westbrook will be available for you.

(9:09 a.m. ET) Bengals QB Carson Palmer practiced Friday, but he's still listed as questionable today. He'll probably play, but since his game is a late one, do you want to take the chance? The way he's been playing, don't you have a decent aletrnative?

(9:37 a.m. ET) Aaron Rodgers is going to be a gametime decision for the Packers. Since he's got an early game, you'll know his status by the time you have to submit a lineup. One commenter below has Palmer and Rodgers, and he should definitely grab a free agent this morning so he's got a good alternative on hand. My pick - believe it or not - is Chad Pennington against the toothless Chargers' pass defense.

(9:39 a.m. ET) Here's your usual bye reminder - the Browns, Jets, Raiders and Rams are off this week. DON'T FORGET.

(9:45 a.m. ET) As bad as the Chiefs are, the Panthers will probably be without both starting offensive tackles today (Jordan Gross is out, Jeff Otah is doubtful). I recommended RB Jonathan Stewart as a fantasy start in my FOXNews, com column this week, and I would still play him, but I'm guessing the Panthers won't rack up huge numbers today.

(9:50 a.m. ET) With Mewelde Moore starting at RB for the Steelers, how many times with Ben Roethlisberger throw the ball tonight? I'm setting the over-under at 49.5. That might be conservative, though.

(9:55 a.m. ET) Don't forget to listen to the Fantasy Freaks with Nate Lundy, Peter Burns and Michael Harmon starting at 10 a.m. ET. Call-in number is 877-99-ONFOX, and you can text questions to 66369. Those guys think I like to take shots at them, but I really just stick to the facts. In our FOXSports.com Experts League, Lundy's team is undefeated, mine is a respectable 3-1, Harmon's is 1-3, and Burns' is on target to win its first game in November 2011.

(10:17 a.m. ET) Back to the Steelers - Willie Parker should be back for Week 6, and he'll be the unquestioned feature back. He slipped a little lower than usual in drafts this season, but if you can get him cheap from someone this week, do it.

(10:21 a.m. ET) Remember that WR Plaxico Burress is out for the Giants today due to his one-game suspension. I'm guessing that Amani Toomer will be the main beneficiary of Burress' absence today.

(10:24 a.m. ET) It's time for PizzaMan's Lock of the Week, sponsored by Denino's Pizza of New Jersey! OK, it's not sponsored, but we love Denino's. The PizzaMan slipped to 2-2 by picking the Rams last week. Today he likes the Panthers minus 9.5 over the Chiefs.

(10:28 a.m. ET) In case you've been asleep this week, WRs Deion Branch and Bobby Engram will both return today for the Seahawks. Matt Hasselbeck's professional purgatory has ended, at least for now.

(10:34 a.m. ET) The Giants still have a placekicker issue, with John Carney probably getting one more game today in place of the injured Lawrence Tynes. Stay away from this situation until it's settled.

(10:38 a.m. ET) Redskins CB Shawn Springs probably isn't going to play today. If you own Donovan McNabb and DeSean Jackson, take note. I think I get more questions every week about Jackson than any other player.

(10:51 a.m. ET) WR Joey Galloway is out again for the Bucs. In Galloway's absence last week, Antonio Bryant caught four passes, and Michael Clayton caught three. People really like Brian Griese today? I don't get it.

(10:57 a.m. ET) If you start Saints WR Lance Moore this week - and really, why wouldn't you? - maybe you'll get to see "The Ducky" again tomorrow.

(11:08 a.m. ET) The plan in Houston is for Ahman Green to back up Steve Slaton today, and head coach Gary Kubiak says Slaton is going to get the ball plenty. If Mike Harmon's the president of the Steve Slaton Fan Club, I'll be the treasurer.

(11:11 a.m. ET) NFL Network is reporting that Ravens RB Willis McGahee will play against the Titans today. I said earlier this morning on Harmon's BlogTalkRadio show that I'd start McGahee, but I think I changed my mind even though he appears ready to go.

(11:19 a.m. ET) WR Justin Gage is doubtful for the Titans.

(11:31 a.m. ET) Adam Schefter at NFL Network reports that Brian Westbrook "should be okay to play." Get him in there unless I tell you otherwise in the next hour.

(11:34 a.m. ET) Schefter's hooking us up this morning. Here's his latest: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers will start. The inactive lists will confirm that shortly, but it looks like you can get Rodgers in there.

(11:39 a.m. ET) The Panthers' offensive tackles are both officially out today. If you care, Damon Huard starts at QB for the Chiefs. The inactives are starting to come in, and we've got seven games to go.

(11:42 a.m. ET) Westbrook is active for the Eagles. The Redskins' D will be without DE Jason Taylor, LB Marcus Washington and CB Shawn Springs. Wow, that's good news if you own some Eagles.

(11:46 a.m. ET) WR Brandon Lloyd (knee) is officiall inactive for the Bears. I still wouldn't recommend Marty Booker or Rashied Davis, unless you're really desperate.

(11:49 a.m. ET) No big-name inactives in the Colts-Texans game except for Colts' safety Bob Sanders. I'll finish up the early game lists, and answer questions below until about 12:15.

(11:59 a.m. ET) Rodgers is officially active for the Packers. Nobody of note is out for the Chargers or Dolphins.

(12:01 p.m. ET) Here are the Freaks' sleepers: Burns likes WR Kevin Walter and RB Felix Jones. Harmon likes QB Kyle Orton and RB Laurence Maroney. Lundy tabs WR Marvin Harrison and QB Chad Pennington. I'm also on the Pennington train today, and I'll add Bears TE Greg Olsen, who might get more looks with Brandon Lloyd out.

(12:20 p.m. ET) Willis McGahee will start for the Ravens, and WR Justin Gage is officially out for the Titans. Also - HUGE NEWS - Sage Rosenfels will start at QB for the Texans. Matt Schaub is listed as having a "stomach problem." Wow.

(12:26 p.m. ET) RB Maurice Morris is out again for the Seahawks, so Julius Jones gets all the work. The Giants start John Carney again at PK.

That's all for me. Thanks for all the comments - see you Monday morning.

Morning Football Update: Week 5 Preview
Oct 03, 2008 | 3:47AM | report this

Reminder: On Sunday morning, I'll be here from 9 a.m. ET until noon with all the last-minute lineup news you can stand. Until then, check out the information below, along with Mike Harmon's Lineup Calls, Roger Rotter's Top 10 Moves You Must Make, and plenty more fantasy coverage on FOXSports.com.

On to the news:

  • As if the Steelers didn't have enough injury problems, QB Ben Roethlisberger missed practice for the second straight day on Thursday because he received an injection in his "sore" right shoulder. He's supposed to be back on the field today, but that Sunday night game in Jacksonville sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen, doesn't it?
  • Eagles RB Brian Westbrook practiced for about an hour Thursday, and it sounds like his ankle is improving. His status for Sunday is still very much up in the air. In other Eagles news, there was a headline on NFL.com suggesting that injured WR Kevin Curtis might play this week, but philly.com says he's a few weeks away.
  • Ravens RB Willis McGahee was limited in Thursday's practice, but offensive coordinator said it looks like McGahee is "full speed and ready to play." Sounds good to me.
  • Another day, another note letting you know I have no idea if Bengals QB Carson Palmer is going to play against the Cowboys. Glad I could help - thanks for stopping by.
  • Patriots WR Wes Welker was limited in Thursday's practice due to a groin injury, but nobody's suggesting he won't play this week. In other Pats news, QB Matt Cassel says that RB Laurence Maroney will be back in action Sunday.
  • The Redskins' defense is hurting, and could be without DE Jason Taylor and CB Shawn Springs this week.
  • Saints WR David Patten is out this week with a groin injury.
  • Texans RB Ahman Green is expected to be active this week, but head coach Gary Kubiak apparently wants to get Steve Slaton somewhere around 20 carries. If a breakaway threat like Slaton is going to get the ball that many times, he's a solid fantasy start.
  • The Lions' offense can be expected to open up a little more this week - maybe that means they'll start getting the ball to WR Roy Williams again. Also, plan on a fairly even timeshare in the backfield between Tatum Bell's buddy Rudi Johnson and rookie Kevin Smith.
  • One of last week's hot pickups, Bears WR Brandon Lloyd, missed another practice Thursday with a sprained knee. Don't hold your breath waiting for him to play Sunday.
  • The Packers aren't giving any update about QB Aaron Rodgers' status for Sunday, but the Falcons expect him to play.
  • Last call for the Steve Breaston train in Arizona! He's starting Sunday, and as much as Kurt Warner throws the ball, he can't help but catch a handful of passes - he caught nine last week.
  • Finally, here's your daily bye reminder: The Browns, Jets, Raiders and Rams are off this week.

See you Sunday.

Morning Football Update: Westbrook looks iffy again
Oct 02, 2008 | 4:05AM | report this

Now that baseball's over, I'll be blogging about football on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings in addition to Sunday's usual pregame festivities. For the first couple of weeks, please cut me some slack if I confuse Packers TE Donald Lee with Indians ace Cliff Lee. Thanks.

  • Eagles RB Brian Westbrook missed practice Wednesday, and while he says he's encouraged about his chances to play, his brother, Redskins CB Byron, doesn't think Brian will be on the field Sunday. There's nothing to do now except wait for more news, and be happy that the Eagles have the early game this week since you can make an informed decision when the inactive lists are released. I'll be right here with the final verdict on Westbrook on Sunday morning, and I'll put it in 24-point type just to make sure you don't miss it.
  • Titans QB Vince Young was back at practice yesterday, but he'll be backing up Kerry Collins until further notice. RB LenDale White and WR Justin Gage didn't practice, but there's probably nothing to worry about with either guy.
  • Ravens RB Willis McGahee was limited in Wednesday's practice due to sore ribs; if he plays, for all the talk about a running back commitee in Baltimore, let's not forget that McGahee got 12 of the first 14 carries against the Steelers before getting hurt. Also, if you own the Ravens' defense, they'll be missing three starters this week - CB Samari Rolle, DT Kelly Gregg and S Dawan Landry have all been ruled out.
  • Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin hasn't officially been ruled out for this week, but his fractured sinus will probably keep him off the field. You've already grabbed Steve Breaston from your league's free agent pool, right?
  • Carson Palmer threw on the sidelines yesterday, and while he's listed as questionable, I'm not optimistic. Palmer's new Bengals teammate, RB Cedric Benson, might get some carries this week. His other teammate, a Latino guy named Chad, finally came out of his shell yesterday. That was nice to see.
  • Packers QB Aaron Rodgers won't throw until Friday at the earliest due to his injured shoulder, and if he's out this week, rookie Matt Flynn will start. In that case, you certainly won't be picking up Flynn, right? For a Palmer/Rodgers replacement or bye week QB, I'd suggest Miami's Chad Pennington against the porous Charger pass defense. It'll take a lot of eight-yard passes for Pennington to put up some meaningful stats, but that's OK.
  • With Mewelde Moore being the last man standing in the Steeler backfield, as Mike Harmon put it, look for Ben Roethlisberger to air it out Sunday night against the Jags. I think Santonio Holmes' TD last week was just the beginning of his 2008 breakout.
  • Sounds like rookie RB Felix Jones is going to get some more touches for the Cowboys this week.
  • Remember that Giants WR Plaxico Burress will serve a one-game suspension this week. Amani Toomer and Steve Smith should be busy in his absence.
  • Nervous Randy Moss owners should know that their first-round pick is trying really hard to bond with QB Matt Cassel. I heard they baked some cookies together during the bye week and everything.
  • Reggie Bush - more catches, fewer carries? Ugh.
  • Seahawks WRs Bobby Engram and Deion Branch appear on track to make their 2008 debuts on Sunday.
  • After the bye week, Marc Bulger will be back at QB for the Rams.
  • Speaking of byes, this week's vacationers are the Rams, Jets, Browns and Raiders.

See you tomorrow.

Morning Baseball Update: One More Time!
Sep 30, 2008 | 3:51AM | report this

The Twins and White Sox duke it out for the AL Central title tonight at 7:37 p.m. ET, and even though we looked at some of the players in this game already, I wanted an excuse to write one more baseball blog for the season. This is really, really, really the last one. I swear.

To complement yesterday's blog entry, here are some additional notes about some of tonight's widely available players. If you're like me and your league still isn't settled, maybe one of them can help.

  • I think I've become at least a board member of the Denard Span Fan Club. In addition to his six stolen bases in September, the rookie OF has scored 26 runs for the month, tying him for the MLB lead with Ryan Howard. Span's still only 12.2 percent owned, and if you need one last offensive boost, he's your guy.
  • White Sox 2B Alexei Ramirez (55.3 percent owned) was one of yesterday's suggestions. If you picked him up, I hope the grand slam helped. Maybe he'll hit another one tonight.
  • We touched on starters Nick Blackburn (10.1 percent owned) and John Danks (49.4 percent owned) yesterday. My bad advice to stay away from Gavin Floyd in Monday's game shows that either A) I'm a dope, or B) making one-game predictions in baseball is a silly exercise. With that said, if my money was on the line I'd bet on Blackburn getting knocked around more than Danks tonight. Blackburn has a 5.60 ERA in his last 10 starts, with just 23 strikeouts in 53 innings. Also, don't forget that Danks is pitching on three days' rest.
  • Twins SS Nick Punto (4.2 percent owned) - an offensive non-entity in real baseball - has six of his 15 stolen bases in September.
  • Twins OF Carlos Gomez (28.5 percent owned) stole five of his 33 bases in September, and that's fine. He also batted .296 with 20 RBI for the month. Don't go too crazy about that stat, because RBI are about opportunity as much as anything else, but Gomez is hitting well right now.
  • White Sox OF Dewayne Wise (0.7 percent owned) batted second, scored a run and stole a base in Monday's win. Are you sure he can't help you?
  • White Sox 3B Juan Uribe is still just 17.3 percent owned. I'm not a fan, but he's got a little pop in his bat, and qualifies at second and short as well as third base.
  • After Floyd got in trouble yesterday, the Sox bullpen usage was Matt Thornton and Octavio Dotel in the seventh inning, and Scott Linebrink in the eighth. None of the trio is owned in more than 5.5 percent of FOXSports.com leagues, and Dotel and Thornton are always threats to strike out a couple of batters.
  • The Twins' relief corps isn't as clear-cut after closer Joe Nathan, but they've been using rookie Jose Mijares in the late innings recently. He's allowed one run in nine innings for the Twins after posting a 2.70 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings in the minors this season.
  • With the lefty Danks pitching for Chicago, Brendan Harris (4.7 percent owned) is in line to get the start at third base for the Twins.
  • Twins DH Jason Kubel (14.6 percent owned) has 20 homers on the season, but he's much better against righties (.848 OPS) than lefties (.724 OPS).
  • Twins OF Delmon Young is owned in 54.7 percent of leagues, and while he hasn't lived up to his immense prospect hype, he is hitting .341 in September.
  • White Sox 1B Paul Konerko (59.1 percent owned) has nine home runs in September. That's a lot.
  • Finally, if you want to take a Hail Mary on any bench players in this game, your best bets are probably White Sox OFs Nick Swisher for power, and Jerry Owens for speed.

OK, that's the last of the last baseball blogs. I'll be writing columns for the site throughout the offseason (every Tuesday and some Thursdays). Good luck tonight.

Morning Baseball Update: It Ain't Over
Sep 29, 2008 | 4:35AM | report this

I was going to switch the blog to football today, but the fantasy baseball gods have decided they don't want our little game to end just yet. My AL keeper league still hangs in the balance - the lead changed between my team and another about six times yesterday, with four teams jockeying for batting average position. I'm in second place, and I have Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Jim Thome, Edgar Renteria and Marcus Thames on my roster. There's a slight chance I'll have the TV tuned into today's game.

Here's what's left of the season:

Monday: Tigers @ White Sox, 2:05 p.m. ET

Tuesday: If the White Sox win Monday, Twins @ White Sox, 7:37 p.m. ET

Most online leagues - including those on FOXSports.com - will count these games. In no particular order, here are some players you might be able to grab for some overtime assistance in daily transaction leagues:

Freddy Garcia (0.2 percent owned) - Garcia makes his third start of the season for the Tigers today after his late-season callup. He gave up no runs in five innings in his first start, and five runs in five innings in his second. If I had to bet, my money would be on Garcia giving up at least a few runs to the motivated Sox today. He could make it respectable, though.

Gavin Floyd (62.9 percent owned) - The 25-year-old Floyd is out of gas, having allowed 20 runs in 33 1/3 September innings. He's also pitching on three days rest. You're probably only considering a move if you really need to, but this has disaster written all over it. If I had ERA and WHIP points in danger, I'd stay away from Floyd.

Fernando Rodney (8.3 percent owned) - He's the only closer left that's available for pickup. He's not good, but your options are as limited as they get at this point, right?

Dusty Ryan (0.1 percent owned) - Ryan might be the Tigers' everyday catcher in 2009, and he hit 17 homers with an .837 OPS between Double A and Triple A this season. He's been playing just about every day for the past couple of weeks, with Brandon Inge shifting to third base.

Alexei Ramirez (53.6 percent owned) - Ozzie Guillen's favorite player is batting .288 with 20 home runs and 12 stolen bases. I have no idea why he's unowned in so many leagues.

Dewayne Wise (0.5 percent owned) - Thanks to Carlos Quentin's injury and Nick Swisher's putridity, Wise has been playing regularly down the stretch for the White Sox. He's got four homers and two stolen bases in September.

John Danks (49 percent owned) - The 23-year-old lefty is scheduled to get the start for the Sox if they play Tuesday, and he's held up fairly well while racking up a career high in innings (187). Danks has a 4.14 ERA in September, but struck out 24 batters against six walks in 26 1/3 innings. I like Chicago's chances better tomorrow than today if they make it that far.

Nick Blackburn (9.2 percent owned) - Blog mascot Kevin Slowey would have been in line for Tuesday's potential start, but he hasn't been able to pick up a ball since getting hit in the wrist with a line drive last week. Blackburn is 11-10 with a 4.14 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP on the season, but he's been smacked around in September, with a 6.75 ERA in five starts.

Some speedy Twins - You need steals? OF Carlos Gomez (27.6 percent owned, 33 SB), Denard Span (11.4 percent owned, 18 SB), 2B Alexi Casilla (5.9 percent owned, 7 SB) and IF Nick Punto (3 percent owned, 15 SB) are widely available. OK, maybe Casilla just used to be fast, but he still sneaks in a steal every once in awhile.

One more note: The Tigers' Web site says that 2B Placido Polanco is doubfful with a sprained ankle, and SS Edgar Renteria left Sunday's game after aggravating a pectoral muscle. Based on Saturday's game, Ramon Santiago (0.8 percent owned) would replace Polanco at second if he's the only one of the duo that can't play today, while Santiago would shift to short and Ryan Raburn (0.3 percent owned) would play second if both Polanco and Renteria are out. Santiago apparently ate his Wheaties last week, slugging a pair of homers Thursday and another one on Friday.

If any of this information matters to you, then it means you're in an excruciatingly tight race. Good luck, and may all the Tigers on my roster get a couple of hits.

Finally, Happy Birthday to my wife, Heather, who drunk-dialed me twice from Mohegan Sun last night. I hope the hangover doesn't make her flight home too miserable.

Fantasy Football Lineup Notes: Westbrook questionable
Sep 28, 2008 | 6:08AM | report this

I'm not sure what things are like where you live, but here in Charlotte there's no gasoline. Most stations are out, and the ones that get shipments have lines of 50 cars in front of them immediately. I hope Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith are carpooling to Bank of America Stadium today.

(9:07 a.m. ET) If you own Eagles RB Brian Westbrook, you're in a bind. The word is that his status is a gametime decision, which stinks because you probably have to set your lineup prior to 8:15 tonight. Philly.com hasn't posted an update since Saturday morning, which is pretty damned inconsiderate of them. The Eagles' Web site doesn't sound optimistic. I think you have to bench Westbrook and hope he doesn't make you look stupid by playing and scoring a couple of TDs. I'll try to find more info as the morning progresses.

(9:17 a.m. ET) P.S. on the Eagles: Though QB Donovan McNabb is listed as questionable, all signs point to him playing.

(9:26 a.m. ET) WR Joey Galloway is OUT today for the Bucs, while PK Matt Bryant's status is up in the air. Bryant's three-year-old son, Tryson, died suddenly on Wednesday, so keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. UPDATE: Bryant will kick today for the Bucs.

(9:33 a.m. ET) According to this morning's San Francisco Chronicle, RB Justin (Huggy Bear Jr.) Fargas is still out for the Raiders, and rookie Darren McFadden is "limited" by turf toe and can be expected to "share snaps" with Michael Bush. I wonder if Fargas' groin is healthy enough to help head coach Lane Kiffin pack up his office tomorrow.

(9:37 a.m. ET) Don't forget your byes today - Lions, Colts, Dolphins, Pats, Giants, Seahawks.

(9:43 a.m. ET) QB Brett Favre is going to start today for the Jets, sore ankle or not.

(9:55 a.m. ET) Yesterday's Baltimore Sun said RB Willis McGahee (lacerated eyelid) was probable for Monday's game against the Steelers, and there's nothing new on the subject this morning. However, with McGahee in a committee with Le'Ron McClain, Ray Rice, Sam Gash, Leroy Hoard and Earnest Byner, I've got him on my bench.

(9:59 a.m. ET) It's time to listen to the FOX Fantasy Freaks with Nate Lundy, Peter Burns and Michael Harmon. Call-in number is 877-99-ONFOX, and you can text messages to them at 66369. In the FOXSports.com Experts League, Lundy's team and mine are both 3-0, with Harmon 1-2 and Burns winless after my team took his to the woodshed last week. Maybe you should bring that up when you call.

(10:15 a.m. ET) Questionable Bears WR/KR Devin Hester might see action solely as a kick returner tonight.

(10:20 a.m. ET) Don't forget the RB situation in Pittsburgh: Willie Parker is out this week, so rookie Rashard Mendenhall gets the start. He's hasn't carried the ball since Week 1, in case you're wondering. I don't care - like closers in fantasy baseball, if he's going to get the ball, he's worth a play.

(10:23 a.m. ET) OK, I need some help. I'm in a league where I have an embarrassment of riches at QB with Tony Romo and Philip Rivers. My RBs are Joseph Addai, Earnest Graham and LenDale White. I was offered Brandon Jacobs for Rivers. I take the deal, right?

(10:34 a.m. ET) It's time for PizzaMan's Lock of the Week. PizzaMan lost last week with the Bills, and he's 2-1 on the season. He likes Scott Linehan to save his job this week, picking the Rams plus-8 over the Bills. I've got a fantasy baseball battle going with PizzaMan today - I'm ahead of him by one point in our AL keeper league, with a lot of points still in play. How about we give him the Rams and let me have the baseball league?

(10:45 a.m. ET) As I mentioned in my (shameless plug) weekly FOXNews.com column, I'm officially on the J.T. O'Sullivan bandwagon. I think I'd start Mike Harmon at QB if Mike Martz was his offensive coordinator.

(10:48 a.m. ET) Cardinals TE Leonard Pope is questionable today with a leg injury. We'll know by 12:30 if he's active.

(10:59 a.m. ET) Taking a page from the Ronnie Brown playbook, the Falcons might give RB Jerious Norwood some direct snaps today. That would interfere with my proposed Falcons strategy of getting Michael Turner the ball on every single play.

(11:04 a.m. ET) Questionable Bengals QB Carson Palmer says he'll play today with a sore elbow. UPDATE: There's a report on NFL.com saying Palmer might not play. More news before gametime.

(11:23 a.m. ET) OK, so Ravens CB Samari Rolle is out tomorrow. So is the aforementioned Willie Parker, which means the Steelers may throw more often than usual at a weakened Baltimore secondary. Doesn't this add up to the overdue Santonio Holmes breakout?

(11:28 a.m. ET) Here's a different point of view on the Baltimore RB situation from frequent commenter and Ravens watcher The Mick. It's definitely food for thought. Maybe the fantasy world is overreacting on McGahee?

"If McGahee's good to go, I don't know about the "by committee" concept applying ... I think it was a smoke-screen when Harbaugh leaked to the press all summer that McGahee was in the doghouse, hadn't learned the plays, etc. ... Then, in his first game of the season last week he got 12 of the first 14 carries for the Ravens plus a trick play where he lateraled - including the goal line plays after McClain had a long run to the 4-yard line ... I think he'd have been over 20 carries if he didn't have obvious eye problems during the game."

(11:36 a.m. ET) An NFL Network report says that Carson Palmer will be the emergency third QB for the Bengals today. Get him out of your lineup.

(11:46 a.m. ET) UPDATE: Palmer's officially OUT for the Bengals, as are Bengals RB Kenny Watson and Browns WR Donte Stallworth.

(11:52 a.m. ET) In addition to Galloway being inactive, here's a reminder that QB Brian Griese starts again for the Bucs, with Jeff Garcia banished to the emergency world.

(11:58 a.m. ET) Brett Favre is officially active for the Jets, WR Jerry Porter will finally play for the Jaguars, and RB Ahman Green is OUT again for the Texans, Go, Steve Slaton!

(12:03 p.m. ET) Stop the presses! WR Sidney Rice is active for the Vikings!

(12:06 p.m. ET) WR Bryant Johnson will play for the 49ers, as will WR David Patten for the Saints. FYI, the Freaks' sleepers are as follows: WRs Josh Reed and Isaac Bruce for Harmon, WRs James Hardy and Lance Moore for Burns, and QB Trent Edwards and TE Zach Miller for Lundy. I've got a weird hunch about Cowboys WR Patrick Crayton today, if he qualifies as a sleeper.

All the inactive lists are in, so that's it for me today. I'll answer comments below until about 12:30. Otherwise, the blog will be back Monday morning, though I'm not quite sure if it'll need to cover one more day of baseball before switching to football. Either way, thanks for reading and commenting. I'll be spending my day neglecting my kids and hitting "Refresh" every 13 seconds on the real-time scoring page for the fantasy baseball league mentioned above. Wish me luck.

Morning Baseball Update: Final weekend preview
Sep 26, 2008 | 4:19AM | report this

This is it, folks. I hope this morning ritual helped you over the course of the season. If it didn't - say, if you drafted Wily Mo Pena or listened to me every time I told you to pick up Phil Hughes - hey, we tried. Though the blog will move on to other subjects next week, I'll be writing baseball columns for the fantasy section of the site throughout the offseason. Fantasy scouting never sleeps, right?

FRIDAY

First pitch: We've got 7:05 p.m. ET starts all over the place. Here's the full schedule.

Pitcher to start: Kevin Slowey had a miserable final start for us last night. Besides getting hammered, he had to leave the game after getting hit in the wrist with a line drive. Damn Juan Uribe for injuring our blog's ace.

Tonight's pick is the still-underowned Mike Pelfrey (36.6 percent owned), who's pitching a HUGE game for the Mets. He could get rained out, though.

SATURDAY

First pitch: The Marlins and Mets get underway at 1:10, while a 3:55 FOX quartet includes Yanks-Red Sox, Royals-Twins, Nats-Phillies and Cubs-Brewers. If you've been dying to see Sir Sidney Ponson pitch one last time, here's your chance.

Pitcher to start: No, it's not Ponson. Seattle's Ryan Rowland-Smith (0.9 percent) owned is one of just a few home options, and he's the pick.

SUNDAY

First pitch: The Rays and Tigers start at 1:05, while the Mets and Marlins get going five minutes later.

Pitcher to start: The final starter of the year is ... drum roll, please ... Minnesota's Scott Baker, who's 3-0 with a 2.90 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over his last five starts.

On to the news:

  • Mariano Rivera left the Yankees yesterday, apparently to get his year-end physical before meeting up with the team in Boston. But the story changed to Rivera getting an MRI on his shoulder and possibly needing surgery. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting to see him this weekend.
  • Though the Indians have been eliminated, there's a lot of fantasy news with them. C Victor Martinez started serving his suspension yesterday, so he''ll miss tonight's game. Also, Cliff Lee is very iffy for Sunday's start - the team was initially worried about his high workload, and he's apparently got a stiff neck. If the game with the White Sox doesn't affect the AL Central race, Lee won't pitch. If it's meaningful, check the Indians' site, cleveland.com, suntimes.com and chicagosports.com Sunday morning for an update. Yes, I like to cover all bases.
  • I was right about Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo not pitching a lot of innings last night - he only went four. But they were a really nice four. In other Brewers news, Ben Sheets still appears doubtful for his Saturday start.
  • Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell is ready to play tonight, but the weather might interfere with his comeback. If you're in a daily transaction league, check the status of the Yankees-Red Sox and Mets-Marlins games late this afternoon, because they're in danger of being rained out.
  • Javier Vazquez is scheduled to start on short rest for the White Sox Saturday, with Mark Buehrle doing the same Sunday. I see a crash and burn this weekend for the Sox.
  • Now that the Dodgers have clinched the NL West, the team's Web site says they'll "rest their starters and test the readiness" of 2B Jeff Kent and SS Rafael Furcal. I wish I could give you more specifics, but if you own Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Russell Martin, etc., expect at least one day off for each. Heck, Manny might go on vacation until the playoffs start.
  • The Pirates' Web site reports that speedy OF Nyjer Morgan left Thursday's game with a hamstring injury, and might be done for the season.
  • Don't bet the house on Braves 3B Chipper Jones playing full-time this weekend. His shoulder is really bothering him.
  • The Twins, White Sox, Mets, Phillies, Brewers and even the Astros could play Monday if tiebreakers are needed. If your league counts extra games, keep that in mind and have your lineup ready.
  • My Thursday Halpin' Hand article looked at pitchers you can waive after their final starts. The probables may change some as the weekend progresses, but it's still worth a look.

That's all, folks. If events warrant, I'll be back with a baseball blog on Monday, but don't count on it. Thanks for a great season, and I'll see you Sunday morning with last-minute football news.

Morning Baseball Update: Gallardo back for Brew Crew
Sep 25, 2008 | 3:41AM | report this

Good Lord, are the Mets going to collapse again? Since I guaranteed a Brewer playoff berth about 70 times between November 2007 and last week, that actually wouldn't upset me too much.

Who's off: Orioles, Royals, A's, Rangers, Phillies, Braves

First pitch: The Rays and Tigers start things off in the AL at 1:05 p.m. ET, while the D'backs and Cards play a 2:15 matinee at Busch. Here's the full schedule.

Pitcher to start: Clayon Kershaw was pretty mediocre on the earned run and WHIP fronts, but he got a win and whiffed seven batters, so I won't complain. Tonight, I'll use Kevin Slowey (27.9 percent owned) for the final time. He's going to be in my Top 50 among starters for 2009.

On to the news:

  • I wrote yesterday that the recently activated Yovani Gallardo would pitch out of the bullpen for the Brewers. Well, desperate times call for desperate measures, and he's starting tonight. Gallardo hasn't pitched at any level since May 1, and manager Dale Sveum says he'll "hopefully" be able to pitch five innings. As much as I love Gallardo, who I thought would emerge as a fantasy ace this season, you've got to be as desperate as the Brewers to grab him.
  • In other Brewers news, Ben Sheets is currently listed as Saturday's starter, but Sveum said it will take a "small miracle" for him to be ready. Don't wait on Sheets, and look for Dave Bush to replace him Saturday, with CC Sabathia going on short rest again Sunday if necessary.
  • Rockies OF speedster Willy Taveras is done for the season with a stress fracture in his leg. 1B Todd Helton is officially finished for the year as well.
  • The Mets have reactivated starter John Maine, and say he's going to pitch out of the bullpen. That would be believable if their starter for Saturday wasn't listed as TBD. This is just like the Gallardo situation, and look what happened. Keep an eye on the weekend probables.
  • I told you Phil Hughes would be terrific this season! Sure, it took him until September 24, but that was a really nice game. It was just enough to get me back on the bandwagon for 2009.
  • Tigers closer Todd Jones is retiring. If you owned Jones, you always thought he was going to collapse, but the ugly saves kept coming.
  • Rangers 3B Chris Davis missed last night's game, as he's still hurting from a home plate collision. It sounds like he'll be back tomorrow.
  • Troy Percival is back with the Rays, but he can't be trusted. Even he's close to admitting that.
  • Yankees SP Andy Pettitte will skip his Saturday start due to a sore shoulder. The way he's been pitching, that's probably a good thing.
  • Did you need to know that Brad Penny was done for the season? Well, here you go.
  • Angels SP Joe Saunders finally passed his kidney stone, and lost eight pounds before doing it. He's still scheduled to pitch Sunday, though.
  • Due to workload concerns, the Royals are shutting down Zack Greinke instead of pitching him Sunday.
  • The Indians' Web site reports that Cliff Lee might not start Sunday if the AL Central race has already been decided. You won't know about this one for a couple of days.
  • Fellow surprise All-Star Edinson Volquez won't pitch Sunday's finale for the Reds due to tendinitis in his knee.
  • OF J.D. Drew was finally back in the Red Sox lineup last night, but his playing time could be sporadic the rest of the way.
  • Jeremy Guthrie, who's been on a shut-down radar for awhile, will start Sunday for the O's. Guthrie hasn't pitched since August 29, so don't expect much.

See you tomorrow.

Morning Baseball Update: Final starts
Sep 24, 2008 | 4:45AM | report this

Folks - starting tomorrow morning, you can cut most pitchers who start games anytime today or later, since they probably won't pitch again. Today's notable starters who can make their final appearances for you are Carlos Zambrano, Fausto Carmona, Randy Wolf, Paul Maholm, Mark Buehrle, Max Scherzer, Adam Wainwright, Felix Hernandez, Clayton Kershaw and Jonathan Sanchez.

The exceptions to the rule are pitchers on teams fighting for playoff berths - Brett Myers, Mark Buehrle and CC Sabathia (who is already pitching on short rest today) could be pressed into weekend action on short rest if their teams need wins. Also, I have a hunch that if A.J. Burnett wins his 19th game tonight, the Jays might let him go for No. 20 on Sunday.

First pitch: The A's and Rangers get the AL going at 2:05 p.m. ET, while the Braves and Phillies begin the NL slate at 7:05. Here's the full schedule.

Pitcher to start: Dave Bush didn't exactly get shelled last night, but he didn't bring anything to the table, either. Tonight, let's take Dodger rookie Clayton Kershaw in his final start of the season. He's allowed just one run in each of his last two starts, and struck out more than a batter per inning while doing it.

On to the news:

  • Here's an update on Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell: He wants to play in a couple of games this weekend to get ready for the playoffs, but whenever an injured player says something like, "God willing, I'll be there," it doesn't make me brim with confidence. With five days left, he's unlikely to help you.
  • Yankees SS Derek Jeter missed last night's game with a sore left hand, but it doesn't sound serious.
  • The Indians' Web site reports that 2B Asdrubal Cabrera began serving his three-game suspension last night. He should return Friday.
  • The Brewers activated Yovani Gallardo, who missed most of the season with an ACL injury, but he's probably only going to pitch out of the bullpen. The status of the injured Ben Sheets is still up in the air, with a weekend return possible.
  • The Blue Jays' Web site reports that starter David Purcey has been shut down so as not to exceed an innings limit.
  • If you're looking toward 2009, Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter is probably going to have more surgery, but the team hopes it's minor.
  • Braves SS might Yunel Escobar might be restricted to pinch-hitting duty over the season's final four games. 3B Chipper Jones is still expected back tonight.
  • Rockies starter Aaron Cook is done for the season.
  • Royals 2B Alberto Callaspo will probably miss a few days with a thigh injury.
  • The infield law firm of Aybar, Figgins & Kendrick started again for the Angels last night. Brandon Wood is getting a raw deal.
  • OK, so NOW Rafael Furcal is ready to get back on the field for the Dodgers? On behalf of fantasy owners everywhere, thanks for nothing, Raffy.
  • A's C Kurt Suzuki missed last night's game with a hip injury, but he should be back today.
  • Pirates 1B Adam LaRoche missed last night's game with hamstring tightness, and hopes to be back today. OF Brandon Moss is done for the season.
  • Closer Troy Percival will be back with the Rays today, but Dan Wheeler and J.P. Howell closed the team's two Tuesday games. Anything can happen in this situation. That's good for me, since Wheeler's on my AL keeper league team. Not that you care.

See you tomorrow.

Morning Baseball Update: Sheffield's suspension
Sep 23, 2008 | 2:51AM | report this

The Yankees might play another game in the Stadium after all. They just need to run the table, have the Red Sox lose every game ... yeah, I know it's ridiculous. Cut me some slack, OK?

First pitch: The Rays and O's start their doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. ET, while the Braves and Phillies start the NL schedule at 7:05. Here's the full schedule.

Pitcher to start: If you picked up David Price yesterday, you did just fine. Tonight we'll go with the consistent Dave Bush (30.7 percent owned), who tries to push the Brewers toward the playoffs when he takes the mound against the Pirates. By the way, over at MLB.com, the Brew Crew has a "TBD" starter listed for every remaining game after today. I think they're just going to let CC Sabathia pitch every day.

On to the news:

  • Tigers DH Gary Sheffield will be out until Friday after being suspended for his part in a recent brawl with the Indians. Fortunately, the cool-headed Sheff will wait until next season to take revenge on the Tribe, instead of flying to Jacobs Field now to battle them all WWE-style. Indians Asdrubal Cabrera, Fausto Carmona and Victor Martinez were also served with suspensions, but have not yet decided if they'll appeal. They'll probably take their medicine, which means they'll all disappear for a few days sometime later this week.
  • In other Tigers news, 1B Miguel Cabrera should be OK after leaving last night's game with back pain, and SS Carlos Guillen is almost certainly out for the season.
  • The Orioles' Web site reports that 3B Melvin Mora might shut it down for the season due to a sore hamstring. That's good enough for me - ditch Mora now, and thank him for his 100+ RBI before doing so.
  • SP John Maine might come back for the Mets after all, but coming off a 24-pitch simulated game, he probably can't go more than a few good innings if he pitches this week. Stay away if you see his name in the probables.
  • The Cubs are rearranging their rotation to get ready for the playoffs, and the move you need to be aware of is Rich Harden being pushed from tonight until Thursday, which means he only gets one more start. If you own
