Kevin Everett was on Oprah Thursday plugging his book Standing Tall. He was also on World News Tonight and Nightline. Friday morning he was on Good Morning America. That afternoon on ESPN radio, and ESPN TV has a SportsCenter special about him on Friday night. Today he will be a guest of commissioner Rodger Goodell and the NFL at the SuperBowl. Surely, that means he will be on Fox’s pre-game coverage. I’m guessing that there will be a number of more appearances over the next month. GOOD FOR HIM, and I hope his book goes on to be a best seller. This will be his fifteen minutes of fame. He should ride it out for as long as he can.
If you have been reading my blogs this season you know I am a Bills fan, and have been following his story. Little did I know that Kevin Everett and myself would end up sharing the experience of not being able to walk. I’m not going to repeat everything I wrote at the end of December except that his injury was much, MUCH, more severe than mine. We both have been doing physical therapy, and in two weeks I will be going back to work. Kevin Everett will not. He will never play football again. His livelihood has been taken away. So I hope his book becomes a best seller, and yes I am going to buy a copy.
I never get tired of hearing about Everett’s story. Especially the part when he says “I’m still trying to figure out what God is trying to tell me.” Because over the last few months I have said that same thing to myself. I don’t understand why God let this happen to Kevin Everett. I don’t understand why God let this happen to me. Maybe we were never meant to understand. All I know is that I’m a different person since this happened. A changed person for the better. I think Kevin Everett feels the same way.
So when the final gun goes off Sunday night either the Patriots will complete the perfect season or the Giants pull off one of the greatest upset. That will be the storyline as the 2007-2008 NFL season comes to an end. Than one of these teams will be Standing Tall at the end of the season. As the Vince Lombardi trophy is being presented to one of them take a second to think of Kevin Everett. Think of him up there in one of the NFL’s suites. Think of everything he had to overcome this past football season to be here at this very moment. Something feels so right about Kevin Everett looking down on this scene. Towering over everyone as he is Standing Tall.
* I have not picked a football game since Thanksgiving, but I can’t pass up the SuperBowl. I know your all at the edge of your seats. In a earlier post I said that I didn’t think New England would go 16-0 and the Dolphins had a better chance of going 0-16. Well, I was wrong on both counts. The Patriots are on a mission. To be the greatest team of all time. That was the challenge Bill Belichick gave his team during the bye week. That’s what kept them motivated during all those meanless games when they had nothing to play for. Granted they didn’t play great down the stretch, and even got lucky during the Baltimore game. They won ugly, but still won. That’s the bottom line. With two weeks to get ready I can’t see any reason to pick against them. The Giants deserve a lot of credit for getting this far. They have nothing to lose and will go out there and let it all hang out. This will make for a close game; Up to the 3rd quarter. Then I think New England will take over and turn it into a blow out. The Patriots will stamp their place in history as the best team ever. New England will be Standing Tall Sunday night as the greatest team ever.
I am writing this blog at 4:00PM eastern time. I think that is enough time. All day I have heard about what Randy Moss said about Jerry Rice. About how the head coach of a 1-15 team in Miami was fired. Does Eli have what it takes to lead the Giants to a playoff win. That Marvin Harrison practiced today with the Colts. And that 25 years ago today Tony Dorsett set an NFL record with a 99 yard TD run against the Vikings. A game that Dallas lost by the way. Nowhere, but nowhere, have I heard about what happened 15 years ago today. At this very moment too. I had just gotten done watching one of the greatest NFL playoff games I had ever seen. 15 years ago today. At right about this time too. I had just finished watching the Greatest Comeback in Pro Football history. My beloved Buffalo Bills had just come back from being down by 32 points to beat the Houston Oilers 41 to 38.
Nothing, absolutely nothing, has been said on Fox Sports, ESPN, ESPN Classic, NFL.com, and The NFL Network. I have been listening to sports radio all day. Nothing has been said about it. Not even on local radio. All they can talk about is Marv Levy resigning as GM. Same thing with the local papers. Even on the Bills website. This is unless you click on the history link. Then you get two lines, maybe. Hey folks, unless you forgot Marv was the coach of the team 15 years ago.
What makes me laugh about this whole thing is that 15 years ago today that game was blacked out here in Upstate New York. The game did not sellout in time. Still, when you talk to people everyone was there! The Bills Stadium at that time held 80,000 fans, but you would think 500,000 people were there. Also, everyone you talk to knew that the Bills were going to comeback. They never gave up on the team. They never left. For a game that so many brag about being at it just surprises me how quickly they forget about it 15 years later.
So let me set the record straight. That game didn’t sell out all those years ago because it was played during a holiday week. (Between Christmas and New Years.) So a lot of people were gone. The weather here sucked leading up to that game. So unless you lived in the area you didn’t want to take a chance driving to the game in the snow and icy roads. Also, many fans gave up on the Bills even before the game kicked off. The Bills had lost to the Oilers, these same Houston Oilers, the Sunday before. In the last game of the regular season. This meant that they had to go the wildcard route to the SuperBowl. Also the Bills had tons of injuries going into that game. Including starting quarterback Jim Kelly. So many backups had to step up and play, and step up and play they did!
I was not at that game 15 years ago, but was one of the lucky ones to see it on TV. That week I was someplace where the game was not blacked out. I can admit that I was worried going into that game. At half-time trailing by 25 points I was more worried, but I still thought that they had a shot to comeback. Many people didn’t because the stands were pretty empty. After Frank Reich threw an interception, which was returned for a touchdown, to start the second half I did give up. So did many other because I saw more of them leaving.
The only ones who didn’t give up was the Buffalo Bills players. After the following kickoff they drove downfield for a TD. “Okay“, I said to myself, “at least they will make it respectable.” Then the Bills recovered an onside kick. They quickly scored to make it 38-17. Before the third quarter was over the Bills scored two more touchdowns and were down by four. One of these touchdowns came on a fourth and five play. At this time many fans who left the game came back into the stadium. Which included having to jump the chain link fences outside.
Going into the fourth quarter the Bills went ahead by three with about three minutes to play. To the Oilers credit they did tie the game with 12 seconds left. In overtime, Houston won the coin toss. Buffalo intercepted the ball on the third play from scrimmage. After a couple of handoffs the Bills kicked the winning field goal.
The Bills comeback was the most exciting football game I had every seen. I get chills just thinking about it. I got chills just typing the last few paragraph. More importantly the 1992-1993 Buffalo Bills taught us all something. To never give up. To never quit. No matter how bad things look. (And if you read my last blog you will see why this is so important to me.) That is why I am so disappointed so many have forgotten about what took place 15 years ago today. The men who played that day deserve better.
You would think that The NFL Network could replay that game today. Instead of one of the meaningless games that took place this past weekend. Including that great New England at New York Giants game. Hey, we all saw it. It was on three networks. Also, one of the 28 and a half ESPN channels could carry the NFL Films version of the game. Nothing was said on SportsCenter, ESPN news, or ESPN radio. With wildcard weekend coming it would have made a great promotion.
Readers of my blog know that I am a Buffalo Bills fan. Since opening day I have wrote a couple of posts about Kevin Everett. Little did I know that a few weeks ago I would have my own Kevin Everett experience. Mine was nothing as sever as his. I never stopped breathing and was in no danger of dieing. I was able to get up, but I could not stand. I could not walk. Like Kevin Everett I did have surgery. Unlike Kevin Everett my life was never in danger, but it was scary all the same. The funny part about it was that the day I came home from the hospital my copy of SI with him on the cover was in my mailbox. I guess that was a sign to me that I should write a something about it. Something about my own experience.
My accident happened on December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day. For some strange reason that seems to fit. If you have been watching The Weather Channel lately you saw that winter hit here in Upstate New York early. Right after Thanksgiving we got snow. It was that wet, rainy, slushy type of snow. We call it heart attack snow here in the east. Because it is so heavy when you shovel it. I got stuck out in it for awhile because my wife’s car broke down while she was on her way to work. This caused me to catch a pretty good cold. So I guess I used that as an excuse not to shovel a good as I should have. The problem is that if you don’t get this type of snow off the ground immediately, it freezes. There is nothing you can do to get it up. No matter how much you chop and pound it doesn’t come off. You have to wait for it to warm up and thaw. To make matters worst when the fresh show falls the old frozen stuff is still there. It just gets covered up. So it is easy to forget about it. Especially this time of the year. When you have other things on your mind like Christmas, New Years, and getting to work.
Well, I’m guessing that you have a pretty good idea what happens next. What happened to me on Friday, December 7th, 2007. I fell!
I came down on my left knee and ruptured the quadriceps tendon. My operation took place on Tuesday, December 11th. I have staples in my leg. My leg has a wrap on it and a large brace. I need crutches, or a walker, to help me get around. I will have to do rehab for three months to about a year.
A couple things surprised me about all this. First, is how fast it happened. How quickly my life changed. Even if it is only temporary. The second is when I was describing to people how it happened. I kept using the example of when I played football in high school. When I was on the kickoff team. How I would be running downfield and the only thing on my mind was tackling the guy with the ball. Next thing I know I’m on the ground because I got blindsided by one of the blockers. You may find this hard to believe, but I thought of Kevin Everett while I was in recovery. The TV was on and I heard somebody say that he was going to be the cover story in that week’s Sports Illustrated. That was when I realized the example I was using to describe my accident.
After I got home it took me a couple of days before I could open that SI magazine. When I finally did I could relate to some of it. Like how we take for granted just getting up from the kitchen table and going to the refrigerator just to get a drink out. After reading the article I though a lot about him, my favorite team, and the blogs that I had written about them in the past. How I wrote in the grand scheme of things it really does not matter who wins or loses a football game.
Still, I can admit the weekend before my operation I watched my Bills beat up on the hapless Dolphins. For a couple of hours I did feel better! Hey, any Bills fan who is as old as me remembers the decade of the 70s. When the Dolphins beat my Bills twice a year for ten straight seasons. So a winning season to an old Buffalo Bills fan like me is when we beat Miami twice in one year. No matter what! No matter how good or bad these teams are. It does not matter if the quarterbacks are Bob Griese and Joe Ferguson, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly, or Cleo Lemon and Trent Edward. Beating Miami twice in one season makes the off-season in Western New York less cold.
When my Bills have lost to the Dolphins it is not be the end of the world. The sun would come up the next day. And at the end of the December I have family and friends around to celebrate the holidays with, and that’s what is really important. But with that being said the sports fan in my loves when my Bills beat the Dolphins twice in one season. I guess that is why we love sports so much. Because for a couple of hours a week we can forget all about our cares and worries. Even when one of them is an operation on your leg in a few days.
Kevin Everett and I do share something in common this season. That is the out pouring of love and support we received from people since our accidents. You may have read about how people have sent him cards. Also bought t-shirts and jerseys with his number 85 on it. That money went to charity. To help others walk again like Kevin and I will someday.
I too have been overwhelmed by the love, help and support I have received from many friends and family members. Leading this charge is my wife. It is a very humbling experience when someone has to help you put on your shoes, or wipe your ####. Others have stepped up to the plate, big time, to help out. And the old saying is true; it is the little things that matter. From just doing things like sending a get well card, bringing over a hot meal, going to the store, walking my dogs, and shoveling and snow blowing my driveway. I now know how George Bailey felt at the end of It’s a Wonderful Life.
Today is the final week of the NFL season. A lot has changed for Kevin Everett and myself since the season started. One of them is that up till my accident I have faithfully blogs most weeks. Not that writing a post about who I thing is going to win NFL games is any big deal, but at least I stuck with it. That is a big accomplishment for me! Next up will be sticking with my rehab! From what I have heard from others this will not be easy, and very painful.
Finally, as the curtain comes down on the 2007 NFL season and we get ready for the playoffs I hope you will join me for my 2008 resolution. It is to be patience. Don’t always be in a hurry. Don’t wait for an accident to happen to make you stop and smell the roses. To appreciate those around you and all the things we talk for granted, like taking a walk around the block. I’m sure anyone that got hurt during the war that began December 7th, 1941, or any other conflict since, knows what I am talking about.
I apologize to anyone reading this who is in a wheelchair or lost a limb. I can’t be a spokesperson for you. Still, maybe I can share my experience with others. Hopefully by telling people about what happened to me will teach them to please try and be patience and understanding. Ask yourself “what’s the hurry” before you try to get by someone that may have to use a cane, crutches, walker, or in a wheelchair. Imagine what it might be like for them when they are running late. Also remember that they really hate those aids that they must use to get around. They are forced to use them as a by product of circumstances that they can’t control. Whether it is by age, or an accident. Having part of your independence taken away from you is a very emotional experience. An experience that Kevin Everrett and myself shared this past football season. An experience that I know we will never forget.
One of the true joys I have this time of year is checking out the papers around the country to read about the famous Thanksgiving day turkey prank. A lot of teams pull it on their rookies. It goes something like this; Early in the week a sign is posted in the locker room informing the players where and when they can pick up their free Thanksgiving day turkeys. A local store is used and the owner is in on the gag. When the rookie shows up to claim his turkey the owner acts like he knows nothing about it. Somewhere hidden in the store is a video camera that records the players reaction. Later in the week during a team meeting the coaches act like they are going to show game film. Instead they play a tape (in the old days film) of the rookie reactions. The team gets a big laugh out of watching them, and at the end they vote on which rookie wins the annual turkey of the year award.
Some of the articles that I have read over the years is about players being dumbfounded to getting down right angry. Once I read about a lineman who got so mad he almost broke the counter at the butcher shop that was being used for the joke. That is because most of the time the sign that is put up has times posted on them. Usually these times are in between meetings and practices. So they inform the coaches that while they have a few minutes they are going to run out and get there free birds. The coaches are in on the joke too. One story that I remember reading is how a rookie quarterback informed his coach that he was going to run out and get his turkey before the quarterback meeting. The coach was firm in reminding him that better not be late. Deep down inside he had to keep from laughing, and he almost gave the joke away.
So between the time crunch, and the owner of the store acting like he knows nothing about it, this has made for some funny videos over the years. Because of the internet I was able read about more of these accounts around the country, but sadly I have not read to much lately. It has been reported on so much in the past I think some rookies have been tipped off. I know that this gag still goes on, and have found at least one article about it every Thanksgiving . Turkeys are what we got for football on Thanksgiving day. All three games were not very good. The two national TV games tonight and tomorrow don’t look much better. New England will continue on there path to be perfect, and so will Miami. Both these games will be blowouts. If one of your local cable channels is showing the Grey Cup game this afternoon tape it. Then watch it tonight in place of this turkey. CFL football is fun and underrated. So catch their SuperBowl game in place of watching the Pats beat the stuffing out of the Eagles. On Monday night instead of watching the Dolphins get fish fried by the Steelers in Pittsburgh, watch the best new show of the season: Journeyman on NBC. There is only two episodes left before this show becomes a casualty of the writer’s strike. So catch it while you can.
As for the games this afternoon, remember I like my beer in my six pack straight up. The Icehouse 16ozers make the best six packs. Four teams that were great last year are all turkeys this season. Two of them play each other. The Ravens travel out to San Diego to play the Chargers. San Diego is the better team and needs this game to keep pace with Denver, but for some reason I smell an upset here. I guess I just feel that Baltimore might be fired up after letting one get away at home last week to the Browns. Also because the Chargers really have not been playing all that well this season with costly losses to the Chiefs and Vikes. Baltimore is my road warrior/upset pick of the week.
Other road warrior picks involve teams that were not the same as last year; The Bears and the Saints. The Bears will lose this afternoon at home to the Broncos. Chicago might keep it close because Denver is coming off a short week, but Denver will pull away in the second half. Chicago has no running game, problems on defense, and their ongoing quarterback saga. The Saints are having their problems too, but I think they will win this afternoon in Carolina. Vinny Testaverde is going to start again and I have a hard time picking a team that has an old quarterback who started this season on his couch.
Another team with an older quarterback will win today. Arizona is hosting the 49ers this afternoon. Kurt Warner, and his bad elbow, should be considered for comeback player of the year. The Cardinals have a real shot to win the division. They will win their third in a row today. Two other home teams that I like this afternoon are the Browns over the Texans and the Bucs over the Redskins. Cleveland, Houston, Tampa Bay, and Washington are this years pleasant surprises. Both of this games should be fun and entertaining to watch.
Last week my 8-pack of Miller High Life ponies went 3-5. So I’m 33-27 for the season…Enjoy watching the games this afternoon everyone, and Happy Leftovers. Turkey sandwiches on rye, with mayo, swiss cheese, and black pepper go great with your six pack!
Most of us don’t get very many second chances in life. How many times have you said “if I could do it over.” I know I have. I think that is why we love sports. Because no matter how bad a game you have there is always a next. Next at bat, next game, next week, next year, next time. This week’s games are full of 2nd chances, and it starts with my beloved Buffalo Bills.
Back in week five my Bills were 10 point underdogs at home to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Things could not be going worse for my team. Two weeks before my Bills lost their starting quarterback JP Losman on the first series in New England. The Pats went on and crushed Buffalo and my Bills fell to 0-3. With a rookie quarterback my Bills won the following game, but that was against the woeful New York Jets. The following week my Bills were going to play the undeated Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. The first Monday Night Football game in Buffalo since 1984. Everyone knew why ESPN was showing that game. It was because of Dallas, not us. My Bills were ten point underdogs. Everyone, including me, didn’t think that they would win. Bills fans just hoped that they put on a good show, and boy did we ever. The team, the fans, and the city. We did Upstate New York proud. The only problem was we didn’t win the game. We let it slip away with no time on the clock. Another could of, would of, should of. What could have been the biggest upset of the year turned into the biggest comeback in Monday Night Football history. Who knew when we would be on national television again?
That loss hurt. It hurt for awhile. It did not help that we had a bye the next weekend. So it stung a little bit longer. What must have stung for starting quarterback JP Losman was that even after getting healthy he was still left on the bench. His understudy Trent Edwards was going to play, and Trent wins too. Then Edwards gets hurt. So JP gets another chance, and he leads the Bills to three victories. Enough to get noticed by the network. The network talks to the league about flexing a game. NBC’s first choices must have been the Giants/Lions or Redskins/Cowboys games. Because both the Lions and the Cowboys have to play again on Thursday the league says no. So the league picks the Patriots. They’re the showcase team now. With a chance to make history. They are playing the Bills this week. Buffalo put on a good show a few weeks back. What do you say we give the Bills another chance?
So the game is set. My Buffalo Bills get a second chance. They will be playing the showcase team. The only undefeated team left in the league. On national television. This time it is a bigger audience because it is Sunday Night Football. John Madden, Al Micheals, Bob Costas, Andrea Kremer, and Peter King. You don’t need cable to see this game. Just a good pair of rabbit ears. Buffalo is huge underdogs again. This time by 16 points. JP Losman gets a second chance too. A chance to show what he can do on national TV against the team that cheap shot his knee a few weeks back. JP has a chance to play the game of his life. He will need to because Buffalo's star rookie running back Marshawn #### is out. So another rookie running back, Dwayne Wright, will get his chance. Also veteran running back Anthony Thomas will too.
There has been a buzz here in Upstate New York for the past two weeks. Ever since this game was announced. The buzz is bigger and louder that it was for the Cowboys game. Maybe because this one crept up on us. Maybe because it is a division rival. I believe that it is because Buffalo has been given a second chance. Another chance to show the country that we can overcome the odds, hang in there, and this time maybe, just maybe, win a big game. So as my upset of the week I am going to pick my Bills to upset the Pats. I guess I am using my heart instead of my head on this one, but I could never go against my team.
So the script has been set for the sequel. I just hope that this movie has a different ending. And to all you nice Pat fans from Boston who I have had the pleasure of meeting over the years. The ones who travel to Western New York to cheer on your team. The fans who came here even when your team was not winning Superbowls. The ones who I have shared a drink in the parking lot and have told me over the years that Buffalo has the best tailgating. (We do!) I hope you go back home a little disappointed tonight. If you don’t then I hope you go on to 16-0, and break Miami’s 1972 record. I also hope that the Dolphins go 0-16. So I’m taking the Eagles this afternoon too. Spoken like a true red, white, and blue Bills fan.
The rest of my picks. Remember I like my beer straight up. So I don’t use the points. QB Daunte Culpepper gets a second chance against the second team that gave up on him. He beat the Dolphins earlier in the season. Today he gets a chance against the Vikings in Minnesota. Oakland is the pick this afternoon while rookie sensation Adrian Peterson watches from the sidelines. Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman also gets his second chance this afternoon to start for the Bears in Seattle. There were stories in the Chicago papers this week about how last year NBC could not wait to flex them to Sunday Night football. Now they could not wait to flex them off. Lovie Smith should use this a motivation to fire up the Bears against a Seahawk team playing on a short week without their star running back. Chicago is the pick.
Carolina quarterback Vinnie Testaverde is given another chance this afternoon. He will start against the Packers in Green Bay. This movie will not have a happy ending. Green Bay is the pick. The clock is also about to strike midnight for the Detroit Lions with games coming up against the Cowboys, Chargers, and two against the Packers. That loss last week in Arizona hurt bad, and that was one they could not afford to lose. They were probably looking ahead to this afternoon when they play the New York Giants. I like the Giants defense against the Lions shaky offence line. The Giants are my pick.
Last week I went 2-4, and am 30-22 for the season. Since, I didn’t pick week one I am still two games behind because a couple of weeks I made bonus picks. A Millers High Life 7oz pony eight pack. (Do they still make them?) I’m going to do that again today because their are two big games this afternoon north of the border. In Toronto the Argonauts play the Blue Bombers and in Vancouver the Roughriders take on the Lions. The winners will play in the Grey Cup game next week. The Superbowl of the CFL. My picks are both home teams. Toronto over Winnipeg and British Columbia over Saskatchewan. In keeping with my theme this week this will give Toronto’s head coach Michael “Pinball” Clemons a chance to win his second Grey Cup and
the B.C. Lions a chance to win their second Grey Cup in a row…Enjoy the games everyone!
As Jerry said in that famous Seinfeld episode “will use the honor system.” I didn’t get a chance to post my six-pack last week so you will just have to take my word on the results. If that does not work for you then let me tell you that both my parents are Navy veterans from World War II. I have a feeling that my Mom and Dad were dancing a #### up in heaven last Saturday night when Navy beat Notre Dame in OT. It has been 43 years since that happened. The last time Navy beat Notre Dame gas was .30 cents, stamps were .03 cents, I was one year old, and my younger brother was not even born yet. So HONOR will be my theme this week as I make my picks for Veterans Day, but before I do let me tell you about last week.
I went 4-2 and for the season I am 28-18. I was right with about the Bucs, Saints, Texans, and Lions. I was wrong about the game of the year, or should I say games of the year. I picked the Colts to beat the Pats. I also picked the Seahawks to beat the Browns. The Seattle/Cleveland game played last Sunday at 4:00PM was just as good, if not better, as the big New England/ Indianapolis game. Here in Upstate New York some markets had to carried that game because due to NFL rules. Those football fans got real lucky because there was two great games on last Sunday at 4:00PM. I sure many of you reading this saw Pats/Colts. If you didn’t see Seahawks/Bucs I hope you were smart enough to watch the highlights, or see the replay on NFL Network. New England is on bye this week, but the other three teams that played in the games of the year, play this week. That is where I will start with my picks.
Indianapolis played a great game last week and there is no doubt in my mind that if fully healthy they can go toe to toe with New England. If they meet again in the playoffs that should be some game too. The question is where will it be played. If the Colts want a rematch against the Pats at home then they have to keep winning and hope that New England has a stumbles a along the way. In other words hope that Tom Brady goes down. The Colts travel out to the west coast to play the Chargers this week on Sunday Night Football. This should be a great game too, but in the end I think the Colts will win. Even without Marvin Harrison I just think that the Colts are the better team, and the Chargers are not as good as they were last season.
After seeing the Seahawks lose to the Browns last week in OT I noticed that Seattle is one beat up team. Starting with running back Shaun Alexander who is playing with a cast on his arm. The injuries they have on both sides of the ball caused them to blow the lead against the Browns. Seattle deserves credit for being able to have a good final drive to put the game into OT. They just could not finish the job even after winning the coin flip in overtime. Still, even with losing Seattle has a 500 record and first place in the NFC west. This week they play the 49ers on Monday night football. This is a big game for them because will a win they will be a couple of games up in the division. The Seahawks have two home games back-to-back on a short week. They need this win the most because comes against a division rival. I think they will. Seattle over San Fran is my pick.
The Browns are catching the Steelers at the right time. Pittsburgh is coming off of a short week and a emotional game last week in the rain celebrating Steelers teams of the past. Pittsburgh crushed the Browns in week one, but that was a different Browns team. This is a big game for Cleveland. It is a statement game! Not just for the team, but for their leaders QB Derek Anderson and RB Jamel Lewis. If the Brownies want to prove they are the real deal they must win in Pittsburgh. I think they will and that is my upset of the week.
Are the Lions for real? The next three weeks will tell. Next week they play both the Giants and Packers at home on a short week. If they are for real then they can’t get caught looking ahead. They must win in Arizona today. I think they will and are one of my two road warrior picks. The other is my beloved Buffalo Bills over the Miami Dolphins. The Bills also can’t get caught looking ahead. There is a lot of buzz here in Upstate New York with the Bills-Pats game being flexed to Sunday Night football. Now that JP Losman has his starting job back he does not want to lose it. He wants a start that on National TV. JP and Lee Evans should hook up a few time for big plays and RB Marshawn #### should finish the job. My Bills are the pick as they keep the Dolphins on pace for a perfect season 0-16. An interesting note about the Bills the next two weeks. They play both the worst team in the league and the best team in the league coming off of their byes.
Byes, rain, Miami Dolphins, and statement games all come into play for the Cowboys/Giants game this afternoon in New York. The Giants are coming off their bye after playing the Dolphins in the rain in London. This is a statement divisional game for them too. Just like the Browns today the Giants must win at home if they have any shot at winning the division. This is a now or never game for them. Can they step up? I think they will. The New York football Giants are my pick.
There is an old saying in pro-football. If you want to be in the playoffs at the end of December you must win your games in November. Games that I picked today will prove if the Bills and Lions, are for real. Can they win games that they should win. If the Seahawks and Colts can overcome disappointing loses and injuries. For the Giants and Browns it is put up or shut up time. Both these teams have rebounded nicely after bad starts. Still, those wins don’t mean much if they can’t beat the leaders in their divisions and get a little bit of revenge for week one losses These six teams must play with honor today. Honor for their teams, cities, and fans, and most importantly for themselves. Still, if they don’t meet their challenge then it is not the end of the world. The sun will come up tomorrow and there is always next week. The games today are just that, games. The players today have honor and courage, but nothing like our veterans have. So as your watching pro football today (NFL or CFL-first round of their playoffs start this afternoon) please take a minute to think of all those men and women who have sacrificed so much so we can enjoy our fun and games today. On a personal note after I visit my parents graves (Headstones from the US Navy.) I’m going to have dinner, and watch football of course, with my older brother. The NFL this week is like flipping through the channels and you come across an old rerun of one of your favorite shows. You have probably seen this episode about fifty times. Still, you say to yourself “what’s fifty one.” Then you watch it for a while. That is the way I feel about this week in the NFL. While checking out the games I just kept telling myself haven’t I seen this all before? I guess the old saying is true, the more things change the more things stay the same. So as I make my picks for this week please join me for a trip down memory lane.
Doug Flutie’s 45th birthday was this past week. It seems like only yesterday I was watching him play quarterback for my beloved Buffalo Bills. Back in 1998 he came down from Canada to give the NFL one last shot. He signed with Buffalo to be Rob Johnson’s backup. Johnson was the surfer dud from California who the Bills traded for in the off-season. He was going to lead the Bills to the promise land. It was going to be a whole new era in Buffalo. It sure was! It turned into the Flutie/Johnson quarterback controversy era. Johnson could never stay healthy and the Bills came out of the shoot 0-3. In the fourth game Flutie replaced Johnson after he got injured. Johnson got hurt so bad that missed a couple of games. After leading the Bills to a few victories Flutie stayed the starter even after Johnson got healthy. About week eight Flutie was named the started for the rest of the season. He led the Bills to a 10-6 record and the playoffs. Today, the Bills have another quarterback controversy. JP Losman, another quarterback from the west coast, missed two games with an injury. Rookie Trent Edwards replaced him. Edwards is the Bills third round draft pick out of Stanford. Losmen got healthy, but was still left on the bench. This eighth week of the 2007 season Trent Edwards was named the starter for the rest of the year.
The Bills travel to New York to take on the Jets. The Jets are having quarterback problems of their own. Chad Pennington will start, but I don’t think he is healthy after having off-season surgery. Kellen Clemens might start the second half, but the Jets have other problems besides quarterback. The Bills beat them a few weeks ago at home and I can’t see any reason why they won’t beat them again. Besides, I never go against my team. I’ll take the Bills on the road and look for Marshawn #### to have a big day.
The Colts and the Pats play what is called the look-ahead-to-next-week game this weekend. Before their big showdown next week in Indy. CBS is sitting on its hands and hoping that both teams are not looking ahead. That they remain undefeated. Back in 1990 ABC was doing the same thing. Both the NY Giants and SF 49ers were at 11-0. ABC was promoting the hell out of that both teams were undefeated and would meet in week 13 on Monday Night Football. In week 12 both teams fell. The Giants lost to the Eagles and the 49ers lost to the Rams. (The Los Angeles Rams) When they played the following week it was one of the most boring Monday Night games I have ever seen with San Fran winning 7-3. So much for hype! Anyway, the Colts play in Carolina this week and the Pats are home to Washington. I don’t think there will be a repeat of 1990.
The Colts get a raw deal having to play two road games on a short week. Carolina is coming off of a bye. Still, I’ll take the Colts. They have the edge in defense, running game, and quarterback. I’ll take Payton Manning over both David Carr and Vinny Testaverde. Since my theme this week is reruns Vinny reminds me of that old actor who comes back to do a cameo. Just like Tom Sellect’s Magnum PI buddies did last Friday on NBC’s Las Vegas. It was nice to see Rick and TC again.
As for the Patriots they have the edge over the Redskins in everything. Washington is a good team, but not as good as New England. Last week Washington just barely got past Arizona while New England had a trip to the Florida sunshine for a practice against the Dolphins. New England is destroying everyone and will beat Washington. Readers of my blog know I don’t pick with the points. I like my beer straight up. Still, it will be interesting to see if New England beats a good team like Washington by the 16-point spread.
Back in 1986 the Mets had just beat the Red Sox in game six of the World Series when the ball went though Bill Buckner’s legs. This set up game seven in New York the next night. That game got rained out and game seven was pushed back to Monday. At the same time the Mets were winning the series the Giants were across the river beating the Washington Redskins. Monday night in Denver there might be a World Series game and a Monday night football game being played again at the same time in the same town. The Red Sox maybe playing the Rockies while the Broncos will be hosting the Packers. Back in 1986 both home teams won. This Monday both home teams could lose. At least the football team will. I like the Packers on the road. And who knows maybe the Red Sox will be winning the World Series at the same time.
My road warrior pick this week is easy. The Giants travel to London to play the Dolphins. Miami is listed as the home team. The Dolphins are so bad that that they had to be shipped out of the country. They will not come back to the states with a win. The Giants are my pick as Dolphins continue their quest to become the first team to go 0-16.
Another winless team is my upset of the week. The St. Louis Rams are hosting the Cleveland Browns. The Rams should have both quarterback Marc Bulger and running back Steven Jackson back. The Rams still have offense line problems, and the Browns should be well rested after their bye. St. Louis has off next week. I love home underdogs going into a bye. I’ll take a chance with them this week. Last week I went 3-3 and I’m 24-16 for the season…Happy Halloween and enjoy the games everyone. God Bless to everyone dealing with the wildfires in California. Hopefully the Chargers/Texans game in San Diego with take your minds off of all the tragedy. At least for a little while.
There has been talk since week two that the New England Patriots are good enough to go 16-0. It heated up more this past week since the Pats knocked off the Cowboys last Sunday. So could it happen? Could the New England Patriots go undefeated and break the 1972 Miami Dolphins record for a perfect season. The answer to that is NO. The Pats could lose their first game in a few weeks when they play the Colts. Indy is flying under the radar this year and is enjoying the spotlight being on their arc-rivals. Instead of media focusing on them the Colts must be enjoying not being asked if they could go 16-0 or repeat as champs. The Colts are good enough to knock off New England in a few weeks. If they don’t then I still don’t believe that New England will go perfect for the year. The Patriots could have the AFC east wrapped up by week 11 or 12. Then they have back-to-back games against Baltimore and Pittsburgh. If they win them they will have the home field for the playoffs. Look for Bill Belichick to rest his starters for the last three weeks of the season. Belichick cares more about championships then he does records. Would you risk Tom Brady, and a few others starters, on a bunch of meaningless games at the end of the season. Face it, as great as it is going for New England this year this team is still just one injured quarterback away from becoming an average team. I think that the Miami Dolphins have a better chance of going 0-16 than the Patriots do of going 16-0.
With that being said here is my six-pack for this week. Remember, I like my beer straight up. The 16oz Icehouse make the best six packs. So my picks don’t include the points. New England will destroy Miami this afternoon. Don’t listen to all that talk that you heard this week about how the Dolphins always play the Pats tough at home. Miami has no defense. Their starting quarterback is Cleo Lemon, and his best weapon Chris Chambers was traded this past week. I smell a shutout. Look for the Patriots to send the Dolphins off to London with a bloody nose.
A tale of two quarterbacks; The Cardinals are down to their third string quarterback-Tim Rattay. He was just signed two weeks ago. Today, he goes up against a Redskins team that should still be angry for giving away another game. Washington is 3-2, but could easily be 5-0. They didn’t lose to the Giants and Packers. They lost to themselves. They won’t lose today. The Redskins at home are the pick. Atlanta is going to start Bryon Leftwich this afternoon. Another quarterback who was signed late, but did anyone really think Joey Harrington would last the season? Atlanta is coming off a short week and still licking it wounds from the Giants. They go in New Orleans who beat Seattle last week. The Saints need this game if they have any chance of getting back into the race. New Orleans at home is the pick.
I have three road warriors picks this week. I like Indy over Jacksonville on Monday night. On Sunday night I’ll take Pittsburgh over Denver in Mile Hiigh. My upset of the week is the Bucs over Lions in Detroit. Tampa Bay running game is still hurting, but I love Jeff Garcia’s mobility. I love the Buc’s defense too. This should make for an interesting game. Detroit’s head coach Rod Marinelli was the Bucs defensive line coach for ten years. Think he knows their personnel?
So much for upsets. Last week I went 1-5. I am 21-13 for the season. Speaking of upsets here are my final thoughts on the upset of the season that could have been. My beloved Buffalo Bills against the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago on Monday Night Football. (No I didn’t take the bridge.) It was a great game, but the Cowboys deserved to win. My Bills didn’t seal the deal in the end. They let the Cowboys hang around. When you do that you get bit in the end, and the Bills did. Still, I thought that the Bills were going to lose by 20. Instead they lost by only one, and I am happy for Wade Phillips. He is a great coach and an even better man. Everyone knew how much he wanted that game after being fired seven years ago. The team game him the game ball. Wade showed a lot of class at the post game press conference. He could have bad mouth the Bills. Instead he thanked them. Wade said that he would not be where he is today if it was not for Ralph Wilson giving him a chance all those years ago. He would not have his dream job as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Something he wanted back when he started coaching at a Texas high school. Still, the Bills should have never fired him. Phillips should be celebrating his tenth year as Bills coach instead of his first season as the Cowboys.
Also, Happy Birthday to Ralph Wilson jr. Last Wednesday he turned 89 years young. Just when you think you have seen it all that Monday night game came along. Sure a victory would have been a nice, but I guess it was just not meant to be. Still, thank you for bringing football to this area all those years ago. As one of the original owners of the AFL. Fall in Upstate New York would not be the same without football. Yes, even with the heartbreak. Because there has been more good times at One Bills Drive instead of bad. Like the last two times Dallas came here. I was at both those games. In which those underdog Bills teams pulled the upset. So it is my fault that they lost this time. I’ll take the blame as my gift to you. So thank you Mr. Wilson for everything you do on and off the field. Just ask Kevin Everett. All that money that you have donated to the Miami Project sure paid off for him. This past week we heard that he took a few steps with the help of a walker. The news just keeps getting better. As I wrote after week one losing a football game on a last second field goal is not the end of the world…enjoy the games everyone.
Monday, I stayed up late watching my beloved Buffalo Bills outplay the Dallas Cowboys, but they still lost on the last play. Dallas won the game with no time on the clock. As long as the knife is in my back I might as well twist it. My Bills could have pulled the upset of the year. Instead SI has voted it the greatest comeback on Monday Night Football. The knife continues to twist. My Bills scored 24 points. 14 of them came on two interceptions. The other 7 came from a 103-yard kickoff return. The defense deserves the game ball for playing over their heads. The offence played well too, but could not put Dallas away. They only scored 3 points and let the Cowboys hang around, and we all know what happens when you do that. You get bit in the end, and the Bills did. So in honor of what could have been, and the Kentucky Wildcats stunning upset of LSU, here are my picks for this week. Remember I like my beer straight up and I don’t pick with the points. I don’t pick with the points, but I did notice that there are a few home underdogs this week. First off I will go with the Cowboys at home against the Pats. Everything is telling me to pick New England. Dallas is coming off of a short week. Romo had a bad game. The Bills played them harder then anyone expected, and beat them up a bit. They also exposed some things. I have heard it all. So have the Cowboys. So I just have this feeling that Dallas is going to suck it up and pull an upset at home.
Atlanta is a home underdog to the Giants on Monday Night Football. Atlanta has not been playing all that bad. They almost pulled it out last week. The Falcons know that if have any chance of saving their season they need a win on the National stage. I’m going with them.
The Raiders are coming off a bye. The Chargers are not the same team that they were last season. They have only played one good game this year, and that was the blowout last week against Denver. If Daunte Culpepper wants to keep his starting job this is the game that he has to step it up. Because the Raiders have a number one draft pick sitting on the bench. If Oakland wins then they could be in first place in the AFC west, believe it or not! I just smell an upset here. Look for the Raiders to keep it close. Then win by a field goal.
The Redskins looked awesome last week crushing the Lions at home. Jason Cambell gets Santana Moss back this week. Brett Farve had his troubles last week against the Bears defense. I like Washington’s defense more than the Bears. I’m taking Washington to upset the Pack in Green Bay. I also like the Bengals over the Chiefs in KC and the Eagles over the Jets in New York. Last week my eight pack went 6-2 and I’m 20-8 for the season. Enjoys the games!
There are a lot of interesting games this Sunday on the NFL schedule. It looks like Homecoming weekend with lots of reunion games. The theme song for this week could be Reunited, and it feels so good. So with Homecoming as my theme here are my picks for this week. Don’t forget I don’t use points. I like my beer straight up. The 16oz Icehouse make the best six packs, but since I didn’t pick week one I’ll do eight pack to make up a couple of more picks.
First off the Cardinals return to St. Louis this Sunday to take on the Rams. Kurt Warner also returns to the dome in which he quarterbacked the greatest show on turf. I’m sure Edgerrin James will enjoy running on turf and in a dome again, and I look for him to have a big day. As for Warner he will most likely split time with Matt Leinart again. Leinart will start the game with Warner coming in to run the two-minute drill. Ken Whistenhunt has done this the last two weeks and the Cards have won their last two games. Including an upset over his old team the Pittsburgh Steelers. So if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If this worked to beat an undefeated team think of what it will do against a winless team. Especially, against a team that has lost it’s starting offense tackle, running back, and quarterback, to injury. With Marc Bulger watching on the sidelines don’t you just think that when Kurt Warner gets into the game he is going to want to light it up in front of the kid that took his job, and the team that gave up on him. We all know Warner rags to riches story that includes him being a very religions man, but he is human, and this is the NFL Take the Cards over the Rams.
The Lions have been playing good ball lately and are coming off a big victory over the Bears. This week they travel to the Nations Capital to take on the Redskins. This is a reunion of the 1991/1992 NFL championship game. The Lions went on a run that year after Mike Uttley got hurt. Thumbs up was their motto. They made the playoffs and crushed Cowboys at home. There dream season ended the following week in Washington. The Lions are 0-20 in road games against Washington, and will be 0-21 after Sunday. The Redskins are coming off a bye and have had two weeks to think about their narrow loss to the Giants. This should make them nasty enough to do a job on Detroit’s shaky pass protection.
The Bears will travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers on Sunday night. Being two of the leagues oldest franchises these two teams have played each other a number of times. Still, there is one game that will always stand out for me. It was the week Walter Payton died and it seemed only appropriate that these two rivals were scheduled to meet. The Bears traveled to Lambeau field and were heavy underdogs. The Bears were dreadful that year. The Packers were just the opposite and were on their way to playoffs. Before they got there they played a classic game with the Bears. Chicago played over there heads and barely had the lead. Brett Favre drove the team down and put them in position for a winning field goal. Green Bay missed that field goal and DaBears held on for huge upset win. Many people believe that a hand from heaven came down on that last play and deflected that field goal. It was as almost like Walter was given the guest of honor seat on the Bear’s cloud. He sat there with Papa Bear Hales. On the last play you know that the classy Payton must have looked over at the Packer’s cloud and waited for a yes nod from Lombardi. Vince probably thought it over and said “What the hell, were in heaven now.” Lombardi probably remembered that Walter could have pulled strings to get a new liver. Instead he decided to be like everyone else. He went to the bottom of the donor list. Payton waited his turn, which never came. Vince probably figured that one loss was not going to kill him. He was in heaven already. And if any team deserved a win that day it was the Bears.
Anyway, I think that if the Bears are going to win this week they will need some help from the heavens. Chicago’s offence is still having all kinds of problems. Their defense is still great, but so is Green Bay’s. There are just being overshadowed this year by Farve and that offence that is fun to watch. On the national stage I think he and his teammates will have enough to win another home game.
My upset of the week is the Bucs over the Colts in Indy. Jon Grudon is getting tired of hearing about the team that he inherited from Tony Dungy, and what better place to show the world that this is now his team. He should have that defense ready. Yes, the Bucs lost running back Cadillac William for the season. So they will need to rely on Michael Pittman and Earnest Graham. Jeff Garcia is playing well and should find Joey Galloway a few times. I’m probably wrong on this one, but I just have this feeling that the Buccaneers might just beat a ####ed up Colts team that is looking ahead to its bye week.
The Seahawks travel Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers. A rematch of the SuperBowl from two years ago. There will be no revenge for Seattle on this day. In keeping with my theme this week take the Steelers at home. In the big battle of New York City, played in New Jersey, the Giants are the home team. So I like the Giants, in Giants Stadium, to beat Jets.
In a couple of bonus picks to round out a Millers High Life 7z pony 8-pack I will take the Texans at home over the woeful Dolphins and the Pats at home over the improved Cleveland Browns. Last week I went 6-2 including winning my three upsets of the week. That gives me a record of 14-6 for the season. I still can’t figure out the Chargers and the Saints this year. So that makes my stay far, far away from games the Panthers vs Saints and Chargers vs Broncos. Enjoy the games everyone.
My whole life changed about a month ago when I went from going to work at 12 midnight to 12 noon. My days off also changed too. So now that I work on Sundays I don’t go to as many Buffalo Bills games as I used to. Tomorrow I will be heading to Ralph Wilson Stadium to probably see my one and only game this season. (Hey you never know. I might come down with something during cold and flu season. Just don’t tell my boss.) The New York Jets will be coming to town and if they decided to study the tape. (Hopefully they shot their own video last week in New England. I think that they might have a problem borrowing theirs.) They will see that my beloved Bills have changed as much these past four weeks as my life has.
Some People Change is the title on Montgomery Gentry’s latest album, I mean CD. Sorry about that. I keep forgetting that some of you reading this don’t know what a record is. Anyway, besides being a title of a song Some People Change could also describe the Bills defense. Just compare their starting roster tomorrow to the one on opening day. There will be about eight to nine different names on defense. No wonder the Bills rank last in defense. They rank last in offense too. That’s because they made all those changes before the season. The Bills replaced three members of the offense line, and their running back. Tomorrow there will also be a change at quarterback. With J.P. Losman out for a few weeks due to a knee injury rookie Trent Edwards will get his first start.
With all these changes the offense has not had a chance to get any consistency, and has playing out of sync. So there has been a lot of three and outs. This has kept the defense on the field way too long, against Denver, Pittsburgh and New England no less. No wonder they’re all beaten up.
I’m wrapping up a week of vacation. Which is why I am able to go to the game tomorrow. So even with all these changes I’m still picking my beloved Bills to beat the Jets. I’m going with the old saying, “sometimes change is good.” I know I’m grasping at straws, but I’m loyal and just can’t go against my team. So I’m hoping they made just enough good changes to end my vacation on a high note.
I’m also in a Some People Change mood because I saw Montgomery Gentry perform Thursday night at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls. If they come anywhere near your area run, don’t walk, to get tickets. Trust me! You will feel like a Lucky Man (or Women) when the show is over. Also don’t forget to give Eddie a standing ovation when he finishes singing Clouds, and it’s ok to wipe a couple of tears from you’re eyes.

Now on to the games, I’m feeling a little cocky this week because I went five for six last week. That makes me 8-4 for the season. Besides the Bills being my upset special I’ll take two more home upsets, the Lions over the Bears and the Cardinals over the Steelers. The Bear have a great defense, but have more problems on offense than just quarterback. As far as the Cardinals they have not played that bad these last three weeks. Now if they can only learn to stop beating themselves. Also how much do you think Ken Whienhunt and Russ Grim want to beat their old team after being passed up for head coach. Being Pittsburgh’s old offense coordinator and offense line coach has got to help. Think they know the personal?
My Road Warriors this week are the Packers over the Vikes, Texans over Falcons, and Pats over the Bengals on Monday night. At home I like the Cowboys over the Rams. The Chiefs are just the cure for the Chargers at home. Look for Rivers, Gates, and Tomlinson to have a big day. Look for San Diego’s defense to have a bigger day against KC’s offense line. Finally, stay far far away from Bucs vs Panthers and Giants vs Eagles. These could go either way. Enjoy the games and Embrace Change!
JOE’S SIX PACK-My six best bets for Sunday. Sorry, no points given or taken. I like my beer straight up. The Miller 16ozers are the best, but I am old enough to remember the 7ozers-eight pack. Do they still sell them? Anyway, I like the Colts again this week at home against the Texans. Houston has looked good the past two weeks against Carolina and KC, but this is the world champs at home in their dome. Andre Johnson is out so the Texans better try to pound it out with the run, and hope for a few turnovers, if they want to pull an upset.
I will also go with the Saints again on Monday night against the Titans. Tennessee could pull the upset, and I think this game will be close, but I can’t see the Saints going 0-3. It’s a Monday night game and New Orleans home opener. I think the Superdome will be rocking, and Brees, Bush, and McAllister will get the job done. They let me down last week in Tampa, but when I heard that it was over 100 degrees in the shade I knew Saints would have trouble in the Fires of Hell.
That Bucs win last week convinced me. I’m taking the three G’s, Gruden, Garcia, and Galloway, at home over the Rams. My two Road Warrior this week are Cowboys and Indians. I like Dallas in Chicago and Washington in New York over the Giants. Finally, my upset of the week is Green Bay at home against the San Diego Chargers. There is something special going on in Green Bay, especially with that defense. As for last week I kissed my sister and went 3-3.
RANTS & RAVES-So the NFL destroyed all of Belichick’s super secret tapes. Big Deal, I think there might be copies somewhere. Anyway,
all the league did was pissed the Pats off enough to continue to play with a chip on their shoulder. This team is good enough to go 16-0. Hopefully, they won’t take it out too bad on my beloved Buffalo Bills this week.
-I’m glad to see Commissioner Goodell crack down on some stuff, but don’t fine Cincinnati's wide receiver Chad Johnson. What he does after scoring a touchdown is just good-natured entertainment, and they make me laugh. What I like about Johnson is that he does not do his stunts in the end zone in front of the DBs. It’s not in your face I just beat you teaseing . He goes over to the sidelines to have his fun, and that’s what sports should be, fun.
-I got a kick after listening to sports talk radio this week about all the teams that are 0-2. How those teams are already done. It will get even worse if some of those teams go 0-3. Also, that all the 2-0 teams are going to win the SuperBowl. The NFL is a marathon, not a sprint and this is only week three. Lets see how these 0-3, and 3-0, teams are at mid-season. I’m sure then we will hear about one team’s great comebacks and another team’s terrible collapse.
-The Pats/Chargers game got so bad last Sunday that I started flipping around. I watched some of the Yanks/Red Sox game. This was a great game. (Hey, this is coming from a National League Fan.) It has been a great season and this final week is going to be great. Lets hope the playoffs are just as good. My fearless predications come next week, but for right now watch out for the Angels in the AL and if they make it the Phillies in the NL. Enjoy the games!

I guess it is just me, but when I heard about the whole Bill Belichick spying story I thought of an episode of Mission Impossible. You know the one with Peter Graves. Not the terrible movies with Tom Cruise. Because doesn’t this whole getting caught video taping signals story sound like a spy mission. My reaction to this was Big Deal.
This has been going on for years. The late great George Allen use to buy up the top floor of hotels so his staff could watch other teams practice. At old Veterans stadium there were holes in the walls so members of the Eagles’ staff could spy on the opposition. Raiders owner Al Davis went so far as to bug the visitors locker room to learn what adjustments they were going to make at half-time. (No doubt inspired by Richard Nixon and Watergate.) How many coachs do you see on the sidelines that cover their mouths while calling plays. So that their lips can't be read. So is it any surprise that technology has caught up with the NFL spy ring.
When Belichick apologized this past week it sounded more like I’m sorry that I got caught instead of I’m sorry for what I did. The truth is that Belichick’s game plan failed. He thought that he could use the old hide in plain sight philosophy. What is the old saying among thieves? If you are a fugitive then pretend to be a blind man and sell pencils in front of the police station. The cops will look everywhere but there. In front of their own house, or in their own backyard.
Spies have been using cameras in the stands for years. And with all the camera on the sidelines these days who can blame Belichick for taking a chance. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying Belichick was right, but I don’t blame him either. The NFL has become a win at all costs, what have you done for me lately, league. There is too much money involved. Way too much! What is a sport to us is a business to them. A big $$$ business. There really is no such thing as rebuilding years. Instead it is called a plan, and if your plan does not work in a few years then your out. And yes, this does go for a coach who has even brought a team a couple of world championships. Just look at the hot seat Mike Shanahan has been on the last few years.

If they only win one game all season this is the one they want. I also like the two teams that had ten days off, but they are on the road, Indy and New Orleans. I will also take Dallas on the road and Denver at home. Since it looks like I am a road warrior this week my upset of the week is my beloved Buffalo Bills over the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Hey, I will never go against my Bills. Besides after the week the Bills had who knows. They might bring a victory back home for Kevin Everett. Stranger things have happened. Like me!
