I love that Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are going to headline the Superbowl this year...maybe one year, the Superbowl headliner will be billed as the players. I have been to some Superbowls with great halftime shows like Paul McCartney. I have been to some Superbowls with LOUSY halftime shows, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake and all the other people they tried to cram in that year. I was in New Orleans when U2 perfomed at the first SB after 9-11.....indescribable. I think Tom Petty might be a little under-rated. The guy is a hit factory. I always try and get people talking about who is under-rated and who is over-rated.
Here is my list of both.
UNDER-RATED:
Pete Townsend (not The Who...just Townsend). Steve Miller The James Gang Sadly, these days...The Beatles. Keaton Simons Prince
OVER-RATED
Bob Dylan (Springsteen writes just as well, and actually performs his heart out. Fleetwood Mac...maybe the worst band ever. The Eagles. Chicago Jackson Brown Joni Mitchell Lou Reed Patti SMith THE MOST OVER-RATED BAND EVER---THE GRATEFUL DEAD. many of you are losing your minds right now....lets discuss.
I agree w/ Pete Townshend in the under-rated department and The Eagles in the over-rated department. I think I'd give The Eagles the worst band ever title though. I think T-Rex deserves under-rated credit as well.
Jay,
To each his own, I just saw Dylan in an 8,000 seat arena and he tore the roof off and Jack White & the Raconteurs opened for him, they were smoking hot but when Dylan came on you could easily tell the difference between legend and merely great. I've been a musician for 35 years and technically speaking...Dylan is still all there...great idea, great scribble.
ATTN : SUPERBOWLERS!!! Since the NFL won"t let me come to you to sell my football cards at their "Experience", I am forced to have you come to me. FOR SALE: 30 YEAR OLD CARDS!!! Very Few Are Of 10-20 Years Of Age. There are only about 1,000 cards on inventory. 112 cards are priced at $20.00 each. The rest are only $10.00 each. This is no joke. Yeah, I got two Manning cards... Archie Manning!! These cards are not new , mint condition. I do consider them an excellent grade, though. I have had them in sleeves for the past 25 years, and have only decided to sell them since the game is here in AZ. I will be at the SE vacant lot at 6131 N. 27th Ave. (1/4 mile West of I-17, just North 1/2 mile of Bethany Home Rd., approx. 3/4 mile South of Glendale, intersection of Rose Ln. and 27th Ave.), which for you going to the "Experience" or game via I-17, it's on the way, on Thursday, Friday, & Saturday Jan. 31, Feb. 1, & Feb. 2, respectively between the times of 9a.m. and 2p.m. I will be there a little later on Feb. 2, but will only be out on gameday if from 10 a.m. till noon.

Here's my list:
Under Rated:Heart, Gloria Estefan, Scorpions, John Fogerty(CCR), Styxs, Taylor Dane, Dokken, Lobo, Nikki Sixx, Annie Lennox, Mary J. Blige
Bob Dylan - YES. Lou Reed, meh.. I like him, I don't think he's been overdone. Clearly you are dating yourself with your band list ;)
But the Grateful Dead is an obvious answer. I don't know though how Tom Petty is underrated. Maybe NOW, but to be perfectly honest, most everything good/done with talent is underrated, Because the kids rule the scene it seems. And they don't necessarily have the best taste haha.
#1 underrated band is the Replacements. Holy man could they rock the house down, produce a GREAT pop tune and a heartful ballad.. Many albums' worth of notable tracks that will never see the light of the mainstream. :( Aw.
Paul Westerberg sure tried, with his solo stuff, but let's be honest it wasn't very good..
THANK YOU for praising Tom Petty's abilities. You don't have to love that he's this year's half-time entertainment, but you can't deny he's got talent. I'm so sick of hearing how old and boring he's going to be. At least he doesn't need a wardrobe malfunction to be memorable.
I wouldn't say the Grateful Dead are over-rated because I don't know anybody that take them too seriously. I absoultely agree that Bob Dylan is over-rated, as is Paul Simon. Lennon, as a solo artist is way over-rated. In country music, Dwight Yoakam is under-rated, of course country music has sucked since the early 90's. And I do think that Springsteen is a bit under appreciated.
Prince underrated? I think he gets his due. Grateful Dead the most overrated, I think to be a fan you have to do major drugs, like a lot! Never really got into the Dead thing.
Most over-rated is freakin Garth Brooks, caveat I hate country, but people think he is god.
I agree with you that The Beatles are underrated these days - sadly it seems to be the new thing for everyone to categorically state that they suck just so they look good :( Actually a lot of the music I listen to is what is now considered Golden Oldies lol and my biggest gripe is that it's underrated by a lot of people today especially my generation I hate to admit (I'm 21) I'm less about bands being underrated and more about genres being underrated - the younger generations today irritate the hell out of me with their arrogant and ignorant attitude to what musics 'cool'
As someone bought up on music from every era and genre from Classical to New-Romantic, from The Jam and The Clash and The Sex Pistols to Gloria ####nor to Django Reinherdt to Robert Johnson and all the rest this would be my biggest gripe in the Underrated category!
Pete Townsend under rated? I can't go any further. That's the most overrated guitar player in the history of music. the most pretentious, the most ARRRGGGGH...I have to go vomit.
Jay,
Tom Petty "a little under-rated hit factory" but the Eagles, Dylan, and Fleetwood Mac are over-rated. Hardly. But I agree the Grateful Dead are the most over-rated. I was in college in the late 60's and early 70's and I can't name one song they ever recorded. Most boring group ever.
