MLS's finest? Considering how the Galaxy did last season, why are they in it again? (Actually, I know why they are in it, I'm just a little disappointed Gulati is trying to pretend it was based off of on-the-field performance.)

This competition is going to be incredible, but it goes to show you again that the MLS needs to adapt a calendar like every other league in the world, because I don't think its fair that the MLS will be in mid season and the Mexican teams will be in their off season.

More good news from MLS.
J3: and the CCC is aligned with us? CONCACAF even pushed the CCC up into Feb. this year.

I'm looking forward to this tournament - the competition between US - Mex has been great for the national teams. I think this will feed off of it and turn into something huge.

This looks to be a good attempt at creating some worthwhile games for the MLS. I think when qualification becomes a part of the tournament it will be just another obvious sign that the MLS needs to turn to the one table system. The reason being the top four teams go, the incentive the money. MLS should structure itself around the european leagues. American soccer fans love european leagues. To increase intrest it has to structure itself like those leauges. The one table system would create a league where everygame is important... On a side note. Has the MLS ever thought of creating a tournament for the USL leauge and itself? Maybe unfair, but thats what everyone says about the FA Cup and thats where the underdogs show there stuff.

"The format, modeled after the UEFA Champions League, will include a group phase and a knockout phase with all games held in U.S. venues." How can the Superliga emulate the passion seen in the CL if there are no home-and-home matches? It is true, the Mexican-American and Latino communities will show in numbers in support of the teams. It is also true that the financial reward for success in the tournament will incite passion into the teams and fans (not to mention the teams' upper management). Yet, it would be to the benefit of both leagues if matches were held in "hostile" environments. If held in neutral venues, I fear an atmosphere like that surrounding international friendlies will be the feeling of the Superliga. Though I'm optimistic this competition will be successful, I'd prefer games be played in home stadiums - both in the US and Mexico.

Sounds like a crappy tournament, i doubt mexican clubs are gonna take it seriously, its another attempt of FMF to take advantage of "los paisanos", seems like they dont have enough with that stupid Interliga and all those useless Friendly games for the NT.

We have already a lot of non-sense tournaments that limits our best teams to participate at Libertadores and in their best form (the real competition), CONCACAF Champions League( Absorbs our best teams ex. Chivas and Pachuca), Interliga... pff pure ####., if we still in this path i dont see any mexican team winning a Libertadores in the near future

I hate FMF ( money ####)

Rather have seen MLS push for a qualification slot or two in the Copa Libertadores and/or Copa Sudamericana but looks like MLS in all its brilliance wants to just keep this in North America. Typical inferiority complex.

I understand the gripes, guys, and I largely sympathize, but Truth is MLS teams are hardly ready for long runs in South American club tournaments; I'm not sure our teams are ready for long cup runs in the Concacaf Champions League, either. I mean, it's bad enough to lose to Saprissa, but how do explain it when Joe Public edges you out over two legs? Some day, though. Some day.

In the meanwhile, taking our "best" and going head-to-head with Mexico's best is just too good an idea NOT to do. The US men's national team is as good as it is because Mexico has always been the measuring stick. The same needs to apply on the club level. (Sure, I'd like to see this 'Liga' be a home-and-home affair, too. Some day, though. Some day. I mean, right now, which MLS side could get a result v. America in Mexico City?)

Finally, yes, this will/should encourage MLS to do three things it ought to have done from the get-go: (1) Have a single-table structure (Top 4 make the SuperLiga); (2) adapt the schedule to the international calendar, i.e., August to May with a winter break that coincides with the NFL Playoffs; (3) Take the obvious next step and institute promotion/relegation with the A-League.

Taken together, they make every game significant. Now all that's left to do is to hire some crackerjack publicists and let the American people in on the Best Kept Secret in All of Sports-- the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

Please have some respect for the King Mr.Edson Arantes do Nascimento. How could some one like "this"Beckham be compared to PELE..give me a break..he does not come near what soccer is all about. There are more soccer players in the world, that is way better then he will ever be..sorry but you guys should learn more about SOCCER before some comment like that..PELE is the KING and always will be.He can help the league, but that is about it..Nothing else or the next "PELE"..PLease...

I disagree with jimorrison. Pachuca won the sudamericana and it wont take long for a mexican club to win the libertadores. The problem is that the comenbol doesn't want any mexivan team to win the libertadores or the sudamericana and we proved them wrong. the mexican clubs are better than the peruvian, colombian, and most of the southamerican clubs, and we are as equal as the argentinian and brazilian teams; and everyone knows it. Take for example cruz azul in 2001 and chivas in 2005 and 2006, not only did they beat the best teams in southamerica but they have proven that they want this trophy so bad not for the club institution, but they want to beat thenm to prove that mexican clubs are for real. Now I know that mls teams are not good, yet, but its gonna take them long and they have to prove not only the soocer fans in the U.S. but the comenbol, for them to recognize that they truly are commited to this sport and take is seriously. I think that when the mls makes there own soccer stadiums and have a relegation and a promotion. Then i think by that time they may be accepted in the libertadores or the sudamericana. And about the supurliga I agree with jimorrison. I think that they should have games in the U.S. and in Mexico. I dont like the idea of only having games in the U.S. That is not fair for the fans in Mexico, where the club have thier supporters too. Either way The Paisanos over here will also com to see the games, so both sides will be satisfied.
