Many people want to put the blame on Elton Brand and claim that he wasn't upfront with his loyalties to the Clippers and that his deceitful ways have changed their perception of him.
Many people want to point their fingers at agent David Falk, saying he's just another greedy superagent who wanted revenge on the Clippers for not signing his client Mike Bibby many years ago and trading him away only to pick a bust by the name of Michael Olowokandi at number one. But frankly, neither Brand nor Falk was at fault here.
The bottom line is the Clippers upper management, namely owner Donald "Don't call me Tommy Lee Jones" Sterling and Elgin Baylor, had a complete lack of open communcation with their so-called franchise player throughout the entire process and this led to Brand's exit out of Los Angeles.
When Falk openly stated that this deal "could have been done in 10 minutes," what does that tell you?
When Mike Dunleavy says that Sterling had given him complete authority on the negotiations, what does this imply?
And when the primary mode of communication between player and organization is text messaging, it only reveals one thing: the separation between the two entities. The impending result is what we have now, another lackluster Clippers team. But I hope you prove me wrong, Baron Davis.
All in all, Sterling and Baylor seemed like they were never committed to keeping Brand here for the long term. They saw his achilles injury as a complete liability to their financial outlook for the future. They thought Brand would inevitably fizzle out (after all, he is an undersized power forward at 6-8) in a couple of years, and therefore it wouldn't be worth it to keep Brand as their franchise player. This helps to explain why the Clippers originally offered only $70 million, which insulted Falk, who adamantly responded, "My job is to look out for my client, Elton Brand."
Falk wanted max money. The Clippers said no way. Brand wanted a guaranteed six-year deal with an opt-out clause in the final year. The Clippers weren't willing. In reality, Sterling never believed that Brand would be the man to take his team to the promised land. Once again, the Clippers remain the Clippers. End of story.
The difference between the two Los Angeles franchises is, without a doubt, one of commitment to excellence. While the Clippers aren't willing to do whatever it takes to put together a team that could have potentially generated three All-Stars in Brand, Davis, and Chris Kaman, the Lakers continue to be the mark of excellence around here.
Jerry Buss will continue to meet with Kobe Bryant in Spain to discuss important team matters, and Mitch Kupchak will continue to oversee the roster with every intention of building a championship team while taking complete ownership of his duties.
Meanwhile, former Lakers great Elgin Baylor remains incredibly quiet and subdued as the Clippers' VP of Basketball Operations, making me wonder if he is actually content on keeping the Clippers in the basement by never doing anything worthwhile with his personnel. Come to think of it, the ex-Laker may even be indirectly helping his former team in the process because the things he does and the things he doesn't do never pose a challenge to the crosstown rivals.
Speaking of the Lakers, isn't it great to be a fan of the purple-and-gold these days? With Ron Artest and Kenny Thomas coming and Lamar Odom and Ronny Turiaf going, the NBA will once again feel the tremors of another Lakers' juggernaut in 2008-'09.
And after this deal is completed, kudos will have to be given once again to Buss, Kupchak, and the rest of the Lakers' organization for maintaining their commitment to tradition and improving another championship dynasty.
Year after year, slowly and slowly, this particular Lakers' group continues to make improvements after being patient and analyzing the results, then modifying their strategic plan, and ultimately getting rid of weak links.
First it was the uninspired Smush Parker. Next it was the lazy Brian Cook. And then came the human brick, Kwame Brown. Now, the Lakers are about to exchange their inconsistent and unassertive small forward Odom in order to address their most glaring need - defensive toughness at the three position - by bringing in arguably the most intense lockdown forward in the game today.
And by taking on Thomas and the last two years of his $18 million contract, L.A. basically replaces the expensive Turiaf with another tough minded veteran who will be an asset to the Bench Mob.
Thomas, who may not bring the same type of enthusiasm, energy, and dancing skills as Ronny, is an otherwise more polished offensive player than Turiaf. He's a hustler on the boards and is an adequate defender at both forward positions as well, sort of like a poor man's A.C. Green if you will.
All I'm saying is this: the defending champion Boston Celtics better do all it can to resign James Posey and keep their roster intact because this Lakers team is only going to get better from here on out. The Celtics know that the Lakers never had the full services of two of their best defenders during the Finals (Andrew Bynum and Trevor Ariza), and yet L.A. still managed to win two games.
The Boston Three Party also knows that the Lakers are about to field a team that will have four potential All-Stars next year - Bryant, Pau Gasol, Bynum, and Artest.
The actor Paul Pierce, sooner than later, will see the difference between Ron-Ron face guarding him the entire game as opposed to Odom or the space cadet, Vladimir Radmanovic. By the way, whatever happened to that MRI he said he was going to take after the season ended?
Leon Powe will notice that Thomas will muscle him up a lot more than Ronny ever did and Kenny will make Leon work a lot more on the defensive end because he once averaged 15 points per game.
And K.G. and K.P. will finally feel the wrath that is Bynum and Gasol on the frontline.
And I haven't even talked about the MVP yet.
The Lakers are already so deep with another year of vital playoff experience and they still have their midlevel exception of $6 million to utilize on someone like Posey. Perhaps they could even split up their midlevel in order to add two more big men like Kurt Thomas and Dikembe Mutombo to bring in even more defense off the bench.
However it turns out, one thing is for sure: The Lakers' Assault definitely continues.
And the Clippers? They've been getting clipped ever since they left Buffalo.
IDK about you, We like to see "The Assult Continues" again```nice read :)LOL
Yes people claim that Elton Brand wasn’t upfront with his loyalties to the Clippers and some of it is true; if he really wants to stay a clippers, he should had done something before the season over, he should had told them upfront the he wanted to be a clippers and that he wanted the organization to do something or else. We liked him but he didn’t really help the organization very much either. He is better off with the Phillies he can get more playing time & money and hope he won’t do his you know what (injury, plays with his heart and for his money worth) routine.
“Falk wanted max money. The Clippers said no way. Brand wanted a guaranteed six-year deal with an opt-out clause in the final year.”
Well Mr. Elton Brand, you aren’t my little bro’s Kobe Bryant that’s all I can say to you.
For the LAKERS, get rid off Vladimir Radmanovic and Chris Mihn, makes Shasha and Farmar get along, Take Ron Artest and Dikembe Mutombo..
Interesting read. Is Powe stil with the Celts. For some reason I dreampt he was traded...
Don't forget Perkins, he was tough. But I think that the West will give the Lakers more problems next season...Not to mention the East for the Celts...
I look at it this way: the Lakers are lopping off the dead weight (Odom, Turiaf (who should have had his face on the side of a milk carton the way he disappeared in the Finals) Mihm (maybe), and Radmanovic) and replacing it with guys that can play some D and aren't afraid to D up on guys.
Word has it Paul Pierce will be interviewed by James Lipton on his possible Academy Award nomination for his dramatic role in Game 1.
I've been hearing rumors that Posey could go to the Lakers with the midlevel exception. If Posey does sign the midlevel exception with the Lakers, they're that much closer to a ring. Posey in Laker gear would be sweet.
The Lakers won't play any better than they did last season, until they can get a talented big man. Bynum could be the guy at some point, but Gasol definitely isn't. The rest of the West won't take the Lakers as lightly this next season. A Posey or Artest could help, but they won't be the difference makers LA needs.
You're right, if EB wanted to stay a Clipper for life he would've gone out and declared it. Interesting that you think Farmar and Sasha don't get along. If that is true, it's a problem.
EDCLINCH:
I agree that the West will be tougher on the Lakers next year. Everyone will know what to expect. That's why it's imperative that the Lakers get better.
JON464:
"Dead weight" is right on. Unless you trade Mihm for someone of value and someone you're going to use, I'd keep him. At $2.5 mil and only one year left, he's a bargain as your third string center.
PF:
"Until they can get a talented big man." You've got to be kidding me right? Bynum's presence alone will make Pau that much better next year. You'll remember that I'm telling you this right now. Just like Oden's presence will make Aldridge better. But I do agree with you in that the West will not be taking the Lakers lightly next season. The difference maker for L.A. will be Andrew Bynum. Perhaps Kobe put it best, "Bynum makes us a championship team."
Sleight of hand is the norm for NBA players.
Think of a 'released' Cleveland player who lied to get released, then signed witht he Jazz.
Brand made a great move. Davis got the major coin, so why not leave town and head to the overall, weaker East. In Philly, Brand might actually sniff the All Star roster. Still, he's a fugly dribbler.
J-DIZZLE: I put maybe under Mihm. If they can't get some value for him, they should keep him as a third-stringer and use him for six fouls a game, particuarly against Shaq. The other three need to go.
PF, I think the Blazers could be a definite threat in the West. They're young, talented, and hungry. But they still need a year or two of playing together.

I'm not kidding you. I think Bynum's return, if he returns will show all the flaws in Gasol's game. Bynum was impressive last year, but is he the missing ingredient to the Lakers success?
Yeah we got a twelve game pack of tickets to the Blazers again this year. I'm quite pleased. I think they're an 8th seed this season.
"Bynum was impressive last year, but is he the missing ingredient to the Lakers success?"
Yes, because it is he who clogs the paint. It is he who intimidates penetrates. It is he who blocks shots and alters shots and makes perimeter players think twice about penetrating (think Ray Allen taking Sasha to the hole to seal the deal for the C's in Game Four). It is Bynum that cements the defense for the Lakers. This is why Andrew is the missing ingredient. The addition of Artest will only make L.A. that much more tougher. The addition of Artest is LA's answer to Paul Pierce.
Keep in mind that LA is building the team with only Boston in their minds.
I hope your 12-game pack includes the Lakers so you will see first hand what I'm talking about. But then again, your Blazers ALWAYS play the Lakers tough at the Rose Garden. Looking forward to the matchups.
Yeah, I remember what Boozer did. Isn't it funny about the loyalty level of former Dukies - first Booze, then Maggette, and now Brand? Interesting.
And you may be right, Brand bolted because he might've been thinking, "With BD in L.A. and with Al Thornton emerging and Eric Gordon coming, I might get less touches. I've gotta get my 20 and 10."
JON464:
Surprising as it is, Mihm may prove to be more valuable than Radmanovic next year. Vladrad has to go, but no team will take on five years at $30 million for a Martian.
WHOPKINS:
The ageless Mutombo is the D-!-C-K Clark of the NBA. I'd love to see Deke in a Laker uniform swatting away shot attempts from Leon Powe and PJ Brown.
J-DIZZLE
There are a number of vagaries here that lead me to believe that each side was less than upfront with each other. Falk supposedly has his client's best interest in hand. Brand allegedly gave his word and then reneged on it. And then you have the cumbersome mismanagement and ineptitude shown by Elgin Baylor the GM and owner Donald Sterling over the years. Of which the latter can be said that Baylor and Sterling have become the Laurel & Hardy of the NBA as to how they've ran the Clippers' franchise. They'd become the laughing stock of the league.
And then all of a sudden we're led to believe that were serious about turning the franchise into a contender after all these years ?
Suffice to say that's what tends to happen when you've got banalities on all sides of a business deal . No one really trusts each other from the outset.

I don't understand why people continue comparing Brand and Boozer. Brand labored for 7 years for the Clippers with the worst organization in basketball. Brand had no public verbal deal as did Boozer. Boozer admitted walking for more money.
There are a bunch of hypocrites on this blog when they say Brand left for a little bit more money. 11 plus million to play somewhere you would like to play vs 11 million less to play for the Clippers is a no brainer. Brand turned down more money from the Warriors. Brand is not dumb. He went to the East where his undersized body and his oversized heart will do him even more good than the West with Duncan and others much bigger than him. And got away from the Clippers finally and got more than 11 million to do it.
To say he is a traitor is a joke. Not one person on this blog would not have done the same.
"Perhaps Kobe put it best, "Bynum makes us a championship team."
Umm...was that the same Kobe that wanted Bynum gone last year?
I agree with Odom and Turiaf's departures...but I said that during the FINALs and got lambasted by every Lakers fan, including "Turiaf had heart surgery...you are cruel" from from one blogger.
I don't understand the Lakers fans mentality. And Vlad Rad is still on the team!
Finally, why is Kobe being consulted about "team matters"? He is a player, not in management...he graduated high school, and that's it. He has no business sticking his neck in the business side of the NBA. Shaq and Bynum were both conflicts that somehow managed to have "Kobe" involved in it.
Let Kupchak deal with the internal workings, and let Kobe learn how to play against exceptional D.
Dizz,
In all fairness, the Cavs ownership did try and keep Booze there under an illegal contract, he just found a way get out of it.
All in all, it's better that the alternative, being second banana to LBJ.
J-DIZZLE, Mihm can provide valuable insurance when the Lakers play against a team with a couple of bigs. He can give Bynum a blow and #### on the other team's bigs. I just hope he stays relatively healthy!
If Deke goes to the Lakers, I think he gets his ring. It'll be great to see him swatting opposition shots away to start a fast break or swatting them into the tenth row.
Gasol's flaws: lack of toughness in the paint. He gets bullied by most opposing teams power forwards, which means he also doesn't play very good defense. And plays with more finesse than a 4 should.
He's got a nice jumper and back to the basket moves, but he's purely just concerned with the offensive side of his game.
An before you Laker guys give me a bunch of ####, just let me say, "let Pau prove me wrong next season."
" [Gasol] gets bullied by most opposing teams power forwards, which means he also doesn't play very good defense"
You watch basketball right? You're really disappointing me right now dude.
So you mean to say that Gasol gets bullied by Boozer and that Gasol never d'd up Booze in the playoffs? Then how come Boozer was held way below his averages and how come Boozer choked in the all-important game six? I'm sure Pau had nothing to do with it.
Oh, and since you say Gasol "gets bullied by most" power forwards, that means Kenyon Martin and Nene get the best of him too and that's why Pau had 38 pts and 16 boards against Denver in the playoffs in Game One.
Pau should have already proven you wrong for the last 7 years. The only reason he hasn't is because he was on the Grizzlies and they don't show Grizzlies games where you live.
Pau should have proven you wrong when the Lakers were 34-8 with Pau in the lineup, but of course you don't watch Lakers games too much.
I suggest saving up to purchase NBA League Pass next year so you receive more NBA exposure.
