AS THE LAKERWORLD TURNS
Oct 15, 2007 | 8:46PM | report this

The on-again off-again Lakers drama continues with another episode that puts Days of Our Lives to shame. Just when you think everything's all fine and dandy in Lakerland, Jerry Buss and Kobe Bryant find another way to steal the spotlight from the rest of the league.

Let's just say that it's pure Hollywood. Let's also not forget that the Lakers have to create the stir because a storied franchise like this one, with a reputation for putting on a show every time, must keep reminding us that the attention should be on them. Not the World Champion Spurs. Not even the Boston Celtics. Just like America's teams the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees, the spotlight belongs to L.A.

The fact that Kobe's frustration ultimately led to him demanding and rescinding a trade cannot be ignored. He was serious enough that Buss and Bryant met in Barcelona to discuss the issue. Buss mentioned that he took offers during the summer but wasn't even close to moving Bryant because of a lack of value he would get in return. The reality is you'll never get equal value for Kobe. Philly didn't get equal value for Allen Iverson, and if people tell you Los Angeles got equal value for Shaquille O'Neal they're probably Miami fans.

So Bryant understood Buss' smart business decision not to move him and he went about his business, continuing to train and work hard to be ready for Team USA's FIBA tournament. Kobe then went on to impress the nation with his leadership, defense, and teamwork. It was just another display of Bryant's 100% commitment to his game and more importantly it showed how much loyalty Kobe has for the game of basketball.

This is why you love Kobe despite all of the off-court issues, primadona attitude, and criticisms of selfish play. If you've been witness to the evolution of Kobe since he became pro, you will realize why he is highly respected amongst his peers. And Buss has the utmost respect for Kobe even though Bryant called him a "liar" and an "####."

So the looming question remains: Is Buss running out of patience with Mr. Bryant? I really don't think he is. What we are seeing here is just two people in a relationship who respect and love each other to death just going through some growing pains. Like a young couple in year three of a relationship.

We realize that it all just makes for great entertainment and the media sensationalizes it because after all, it is L.A. And it's also natural for us fans to only look at the negatives in this drama, because some of us are just dying to "Beat L.A."

But if you look deeper into Buss' statements, his first comment is the one that should be amplified most. He said that "we don't want to trade Kobe and if we win everything will be ok." The solution is simple. Win and Kobe remains a lifelong Laker. Lose and go home.

So now it's up to Kobe Bryant to do his part and show he's a true leader and above all, a winner. I believe he's made great strides over the last two years and it will continue this season. He's already the best in the game right now. What will happen when his game matures and he becomes the complete package?

Meanwhile, the mediator Phil Jackson said that "it's probably best that it comes out now... and we can start the season the right way... that's what I believe will happen", showing signs of optimism for his ballclub. He has to react that way because he is their coach and he has to remain positive for the sake of the team. But at the same time Jackson has been a frontline observer so we cannot dismiss his point of view. He has seen this happen before in Chicago, although the circumstance were a little different. Nevertheless, Jackson is on Kobe's side and it's great to know that Kobe has Phil's support. This realization will only facilitate in Kobe's growth as a leader as he copes with learning how to be a winner.

Many great players in all of sports have been dealt away later in their careers, and many have stayed with a single team. With an organization like the Lakers, you can expect at all times a total commitment to winning and excellence. That is why just about every decade, the Lakers regularly make appearances in the NBA Finals.

And It's true that "you can't keep too many loyalties" like Buss intimated, since the business aspect of running a franchise is what dictates most decisions. But do you really expect Buss to deal away the number one draw in the league and trade the player who guarantees sell-outs everywhere you go just because that player calls you a liar? My father called me worse as an adolescent and I still never left home. It wouldn't be too intelligent of a business decision for Buss to trade his number one asset, especially if that particular employee never takes a day off from work.

But if Buss could trade Shaq, he could more easily trade Kobe right? Wrong. It was a smart business move to deal O'Neal because first of all, Shaq was no longer showing the level of commitment to his game like he did before winning his first title. Secondly, Shaq wanted big money that Buss was not willing to pay for an out-of-shape no-free-throw-making late game liability who was nearing the end of his glory years. Look at O'Neal now. 12 points and 6 boards a game. That's Chris Mihm numbers. Lastly, Shaq was also bickering with Kobe, who at that point already proved to Buss he had the work ethic worthy of a $100 million long-term deal. The key here is long-term. So ultimately Buss chose Kobe and Shaq got his cash somewhere else and O'Neal went on to win a title courtesy of Dwyane Wade.

Which brings us back to my boy KOBE, who is itching for a shot at his first title as the main dude. Bryant has much to prove not only to his critics but most importantly to himself. His summer temper tantrums were just a by-product of his maturation process as the leader of his team. He never assumed this role with O'Neal around, and now that it's his team he really isn't that sure yet as to how he's going to lead and how he's going to win. The Lakers, at this point, still do not have an identity they can call their own.

Indeed, that time will come whether or not Kobe sports the purple-and-gold. Because even if he leaves the Lakers in a couple of years, I guarantee that the organization will again find a way to build the pieces of another championship franchise in the near future.

For now, stay tuned after these messages for previews from the next episode of L.A. Divas...

Anything I say at this point would be mean, I hate Kobe but thats my bizz, I think that your Lakers will be very lucky to make the payoffs this year, and I know you will come back with how sorry my Kings are, but I expect that from you! Now injurys aside your boys at best could finish 7th, man your better off trading Kobe because they won't spend the money to help him, he is the best player in the game but he can't do it alone, so another long year for So. Cal!

vearlthepearl- "I hate Kobe but thats my bizz" man you need to check yourself hate is a strong word.

J-DIZZLE- Great post here man, couldn't have put it better. Things will be ok in L.A. I look at it like this. Befor injuries last year they had a winning record. Kobe is only getting better every year. If we can get some good playing out of Bynum and Mihm combined we will be just fine. All we need is a second round apperance and a strong showing in that round and Kobe stays.

Bryant's loyalties now are with basketball and himself. If they were about his team we'd be seeing him commend his teammates. But that's never been what he's been about from the start. He's selfish, ungrateful and a pestelance when he's around people that don't look up to or listen to what he's got to say. And despite the fact that we might've been mislead by his showing signs of maturity during the FIBA tournament. We're already seeing that things haven't actually changed. He's like a chamelion , so beware of what he's saying as it's not really meant.

Vearlthepearl: I actually respect your opinion about Kobe. Many people have many reasons to "hate" him and that's fine.

I also "hated" Karl Malone but I respect him because he was a solid basketball player who came to work everyday.

The Lakers have proven that they are willing to spend money (look at Shaq and Kobe's contracts) but Buss is smart because he just won't "buy" a free agent that he thinks is not worth big money.

Like Jason Kidd's huge salary. Although he is one of the all-time greats, he is also nearing the end of his glory years. Pretty soon he may start looking like the Gary Payton who played for L.A. This is why Buss/Mitch never pulled the trigger on the deal.

The Lakers are barely coming off Brian Grant's contract so they are playing it wisely. They are patient and that's the only thing you can be when you have a decent nucleus that has at least made the playoffs the last two years.

If you tell me that there is no room for improvement with this team, then you are absolutely out of your mind.

I strongly agree. However, I also strongly believe that we can take it even further. Call it extreme optimism.

TOPHATAL: Kobe's chamelion-like personality is what makes this whole story intriguing and made for Hollywood.

That's why the main gist of this post is how the whole thing has turned into a soap opera.

Whether he meant everything or not, the bottom line is Kobe wants to win, and so does Buss.

Winning solves everything - just ask T.O. and Randy Moss.

J-DIZZLE Your right winning does slve everything. nobody was as disfunctional as T.O and Randy Moss was last year and years befor that. Look at them now. Randy Moss is as quiet as a church mouse and T.O. isn't giving any problems to Dallas as of yet. I also agree we can make it further than the second round. But a strong showing even with a loss in the second round will have Kobe believing the team is maturing and possibly go further the following year.

AK47Spidey- I don't think Kobe would want to go to Mormonville. He has a no trade clause in his contract so if that was even the case he would rather stay in Hollywwod where it's just a lil less weird.

I figured out why VEARLTHEPEARL keeps saying that the Lakers should trade Kobe.

Because Sactown is in the Pacific and each and every time Kobe steps into Arco Arena he destroys the Kings with a linescore that looks something like this

37p, 8r, 7a, 4s, 12-20 FG, 10-10 FT, 3-7 3-pt

Boy, did Kobe draw an unnecessary line in the sand!

If I'm in Buss' shoes, Kobe is gone. Someday, he'll get old, and he won't be able to do it like he used too. Or the league will catch up. Either way, the Kobester's legacy with the Lakers, both good and bad, is written. It is unlikrly that he'll win another title with them, certainly not as the leading man.

The Lakers have to survive the short term, and get better over the long term in a brutally stacked Western Conference.

If the right pieces are made available?

You guessed it.

MEAND: Right now, the odds are stacked against Kobe winning it all as the leading man like you just said.

However as a Laker supporter, I have to keep believing that Kobe will reinvent himself, just like most ordinary people who do the same when they go through a quarter-life crisis.

Kobe's legacy with the Lakers is being written indeed, but the book is not finished. We're only on chapter 8 of 24.

Thanks for swingin' by.

KELLYSCOTT: As far as soap operas go, I had so many choices for titles on this blog.

I considered...

"Young Kobe and the Restless"
"All Jerry's Children"
"Guiding Kobe"
"Dynasty?"
"The Good, the Bad, and the Kobe"

Any chance that Jeanie Buss will offer Kobe a piece of as$ in order for him to remain with the Lakers ? She's put it on Phil and now look at him as he's needed hip replacement surgery again. What's she got between her legs a ####*ion pump ?

I think that both Jeani and Kobe like to role play. So it wouldn't surprise me if she puts on that little nurse's outfit for Kobe and rubs down his inner thigh for him.
It beats anything that Kobe might get from Vanessa don't you think. 'cause all she ever wanted from Kobe was a kid and the $4m ring.

J-Dizz...you know I respect your love for the Lakers and your passion, just as I do for my Sac Kings! As far as trading Kobe man I love watching Kobe play I wouldn't want you to trade him I get to see him play twice a year and of course down here its a huge deal and as I said in my earlier comment he's the best in the game right now, and we had some of the greatest playoff games in the history of the game againist each other, well thats my take anyway....peace!

Trade his #### already! Ever since hearin about Kobe wanting out of Laker land it seems now da dat da Bulls r most likely guna take him. Why? becuz he fits well wit da Bulls he be playin with Ben Wallace, Ben Gordon, Andres Niconi, and their 2007 1st round draft pick Noakim Noah! Da Bulls r not stupid 2 pass dat offer up even if dey hav 2 give up Hinrich, Deng, Thomas, and a 1st round draft pick just 2 get Kobe! Dey havnt had it dis good since Micheal Jordan so why not Kobe? If dis happens dis season the East is theirs and only da Celtics r their only threat not da Pistons (havnt won da finals ever since trading Ben Wallace!) Trade Kobe already DAAAAAAAAAAAAMIT!!!

Guys we all know that if Kobe is moved he'd want to replicate the success of his idol. So going to Chicago would appear to be the obvious choice. But there's no way in hell they should give up either Gordon or Deng for Kobe. What's Kobe going to have in support as a team ? A bunch of androids and a worm ?

VEARLTHEPEARL: Coming from a Kings fan, I really appreciate your honesty and the fact you give respect to Kobe when it is due.

And despite my thoughts about the Kings, I still respect them especially the many battles between both teams because I enjoyed watching Sacramento play basketball with that Divac, Webber, Peja nucleus.

After all, two of your team's most vital components were initially Los Angeles Lakers - Vlade and Doug Christie. And without these two, Sacramento would have never contended.

Thanks again for stoppin' by.

REVEREND: The Lakers will not move Kobe for the simple fact that Buss cannot afford to but more importantly it would be the worst business decision ever.

There was a promise to thousands of very loyal season ticket holders after prices were raised once again, and I don't think Buss is that ruthless to his fan base to where he would play us like that.

Buss, the avid poker player, is bluffing. He just wants to let the world know that he is still in control and not Kobe and that's why he made those comments. Kobe just needs to "strap it up", shut up, and lead.

Notice I say 'lead' instead of 'play'.

GAMBITXXX: Thanks for that. This article just proved my point that if the Lakers win it solves everything.

If you read between the lines, KOBE is NOT going anywhere.

Lazenby pointed out all the issues surrounding the Laker organization in a nutshell.

This problem is something that can only be solved by the players - they have to accept their roles and play with passion if they are going to win.

If Jackson is to tweak his system and involve a running style, then the only way to offset this transition is for the Laker team to PLAY WITH DEFENSIVE INTENSITY every night.

Lazenby also mentioned that Jackson was upset with Bryant for not playing defense the same way he used to play it. There are reasons for that, mainly Bryant's increased role in having to carry the offensive load.

But Bryant is a professional who comes to work everyday, that's why he complied with Phil's request and he subsequently gave the world a glimpse of what is to come this season through his performance in the FIBA Tourney.

Kobe is going to LEAD this season with so much ferocity it will catch people off-guard.

Kobe is 29, in his prime, and he has matured to the point that he already knows "WWJD" (What Would Jordan Do) as Lazenby attested to. Keep in mind that MJ won his first title at 29, right around the time when he finally matured into the leader everyone knew he would become.

The Time is Now. For Kobe. For Odom. For Los Angeles.
