It seems that at the end of every football season, either college or professional, there’s always the “How to make football a more interesting game” blog, stating just that. In that blog, you’ll find ideas to make either the NFL game or the college game more fun, more exciting, and better overall.
I got an idea: make the referees accountable for their actions and in the NFL’s case, make them full-time employees.
I’ll come right out and say it: the officiating was awful in this weekend’s games. The missed calls, the blown calls, and the non-calls absolutely killed the games. It’s amazing that it’s playoff football and the refs are still a major factor in the game.
Yesterday we say the pass interference call in the Patriots-Broncos game; today it was the overturned interception in the Steelers-Colts game. Both huge plays that had big effects on the game.
Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down, watch a game, and not have to worry about the refs deciding the outcome o####ame? Sometimes I stay tuned just to see what terrible call the refs are surely to make. Sadly, it always happens. Sometimes, I think the non-calls are worse, like that fourth down fiasco in Indianapolis today. Clearly movement on both lines, but no one saw it so they let it go, which was clearly the wrong call. Spotting the ball also has me scratching my head: how many great spots have teams gotten this year? Steelers got about 3 great spots in 8 plays today!
Sometimes I think I’m delusional, but when I come here, as well as other fan sites, and see basically everyone complaining about the referees in a game, I know it’s true. Does anyone remember the last season in which the refs were this atrocious? The one thing I think should be consistently good in the NFL isn’t.
Make these refs full time employees of the NFL and make them accountable for the calls, or the non-calls, that they make. Some of these refs let the players get away with murder on the field, while others throw a flag every other play, making the game unwatchable. Make them think twice about throwing that flag.
I don't want to hear a peep out of the NFL making the refs full time. In the NFL you have full time video replay, you have structure and a line to get into refing a mile long.
In the CFL we don't have a damn thing. No instant replay, no structure to at least get the bad officials out. Talk about war crimes, the officials in the CFL would make even the worse NFL guys look perfection. If the CFL had instant replay and poor NFL quality refs the game would be 100% better.
You fans don't know how good you have it down there.
but really. i'm sick of the human factor blowing games. if this were pop warner i wouldnt care. but one call could cost a team hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. Tom Brady would never have been in a superbowl had it not been for bad officiating. imagine an NFL without the Brady GOD...
why did they even call that touchdown in the Bears game when the ball was out of his hand on the 1 yards line? they miss Pass interference calls. you cant even breathe on the receiver who - when i last checked - was a pad-wearing football player.
the worst is these tradition freaks, normally baseball lovers, who think the human factor makes the game interesting. well, in Baseball and Basket ball you have 7 games to win. Football is ONE AND DONE. its the real PLAY HARD OR GO HOME. one blown can change history... ask the Patriots.
Fine Blog!
The incomprehensible ineptitude of the refs this weekend reminds me of the 1972 Summer Games when the USA and USSR basketball teams met.
With all of our technology available, there is absolutely NO excuse for it.
It makes me want to find a ref, ANY ref, and kick him in the boz like a mule.
How about the missed play clock violation in the Bears game? The clock clearly reached zero well before the ball was snapped, but not a single official caught it, and let the play go forward, which unfortunately for Bears fans, resulted in a Grossman interception. Not to say the outcome of the game may have been different, but the play should have never happened.
Really makes you wonder about instant replay. Some don't like it at all, but you really need it with these officials to make sure you get the play right, but even then they still manage to screw it up it seems.
This isn't your grand-dad's, dad's, or even your older brother's NFL anymore.
Today's NFL is what wrestling was to the 1950's and 1960's. Look what became of that when all the promotors discovered all the low-brow interest in middle class America. It was no longer about the sport but about story-lines and characters - whallah!: now you have the 80's and the Hulk Hogan era.
At least the WWF and it's Southern off-shoots federations are not trying to pass thenselves off as a legitimate sport. Once you accept wrestling for what it is, it is actually entertaining.
The NFL on the other hand, should admit openly that they have more of the XFL in it's blood than they think.
The horrible calls on the field can only be explained by forces behind the scenes for purposes related to revenues in the broadcast market shares and gambling realms.
Football has changed over the years and not for the better. As our culture changes I know sports has to adapt or die. However, the essentials that made football great will never go out of style. Here are a few tips to bring back the sport we all knew and loved:
1). DESTROY ALL DOMES: Football was meant to be played in the elements. This will help weed out fair weathered fans and wimpy players who can't handle football weather and return classic football.
2). Criminals should not be allowed to play. If I lifted a pack of gum from my job here at 7-11 I would get fired. Why should murderers and ####s be allowed to play?
