A Little Bit of NY Bias...

The Biggest Problem on Gamedays isn't on the field, it's in the booth
Jan 02, 2006 | 7:14PM | report this

Most men would agree that there’s nothing better than football season.  Is there really anything better than watching football all day Saturday, all day Sunday, and then again on Monday night?  I really don’t think there’s anything better than a football-filled weekend.  I love the weekends: I sleep late, I make mysel####reat lunch, sit down and I turn on the TV.  I flip through the channels to watch pre-games on ESPN, Fox, and CBS.  Once one o’clock rolls around, I flip to whatever station my Giants are on and I’m overcome with the worst feeling in the world.  It’s the one thing I truly hate about football.

The morons that do the commentary for the big networks are beyond awful.

I simply don’t understand it: how can people with such little football knowledge get a job as a football commentator?  How can people with such a bias get jobs that are supposed to be unbiased?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a pretty tolerant person who can suck it up and enjoy the game for the most part.  But sometimes I hear the things the commentators say and my jaw drops in amazement.  Can these paid commentators and “analysts” be that stupid and be such homers?  Why do they insist on putting a former player in the booth when good football analysts rot away all across America?

Is it just me, or is Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann, and Paul Maguire the worst trio in the history of anything?  The former ESPN Sunday Night Football crew, these guys might be some of the worst in the business.  Memo to Joe Theismann: we know you played football and during the game, we don’t care.  Focus on the game.  I understand that these guys have been working together for a long time, but we really didn’t have to hear that emotion-filled goodbye last night during the St. Louis Rams at the Dallas Cowboy game.  I understand you’re all good friends and it’ll be tough not being on Sunday night next year, but could it wait till after the game?  They’re probably all extremely intelligent analysts, but during the game, it’s tough to tell because they make jokes and focus on the glory days instead of the touchdown drive happening in front of them.

Hey, did anyone catch the Brent Musburger Show today?  Oh, I’m sorry, that was the Fiesta Bowl, but I couldn’t tell.  Does Brent Musburger ever shut up and does he ever say anything worthwhile?  Mr. Musburger, we all know Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn has a sister who dates Ohio St. line backer A.J. Hawk.  If we didn’t, we got the idea the first time you told us.  You didn’t have to tell us every time either Quinn or Hawk did something, because frankly, no one really cared.  You also don’t have to mention the New England Patriots every time the camera focuses on Charlie Weis.  Newsflash: simply because Weis decided to go for it on fourth down does not mean he’s a replica of Bill Parcells.  Other coaches have gone for it on fourth down in case you didn’t know.

It’s truly amazing Brent Musburger has a job in any booth.  The guy made ridiculous comment after ridiculous comment.  Did he tell us anything important today?  I really think I lost brain cells after listening to Musburger.

Another commentator I truly cannot stand is Joe Buck, no matter what sport he does.  It always seems that finding the random celebrity in the crowd is more important than what’s happening on the field.  Actually Joe, I don’t care what’s on the FOX network on Sunday night, especially when a team is charging down the field or the most important at bat is being disrupted by your annoying voice.  How about you focus on the game, rather than focusing on the could be Super Bowl match up?

I could go on and on.  The guys in the booth get the names wrong, fail to realize who is carrying the ball or who made the tackle, don’t understand the NFL rulebook and try to guess the outcome of a challenge, and tell us information we don’t need to know.  The majority of commentators and analysts are hard to listen to, simply because they focus on everything but the game they are supposed to be covering.  Sometimes I turn the game on mute because I know I won’t hear anything important.

Who’s to fault here?  The network, who hires these morons and tells them what to say, or the commentators, who know little about the sport they are covering?  Networks wonder why ratings hit low levels year after year.  I have a solution: put someone with a brain in the booth and let them talk about the game.  Why is it harder than it should be?

I am amazed!! I have felt for years the Paul Maguire and Brent Musburger ruin a fottball telacast. They harp on obvious points, and are way to inclined to jump on something irrelevant. Besides the fact Paul seems to have an affliction of pounding a point into the ground when we as veiwers at home can see from replay that.....he is wrong!!!!

Speaking of the sister Quinn and A.J. Hawk - I got to watch a little bit of the Fiesta Bowl tonight, and it seemed like every other play they put the camera on Brady Quinn's sister, who looked utterly ridiculous in that half Buckeye/half Irish jersey that she had on herself.

Am I the only one who was bothered by this?? It's the Fiesta Bowl, where two very prestigious universities are playing each other, and I am forced to watch Quinn's sister if I wish to watch the game??

Weird.

Munchburger is the ABSOLUTE WORST (and, that is saying a LOT)!!!!!

The continual rambling about Hawk dating Quinn's sister was beyond what I could stand. The MUTE button was used throughout the game -- but I think I caught more of Quinn's sister than the actual game. ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Buck is overrated, not funny, and he clearly show favouritism in a job that is suppose to be impartial. He loves the Yankees (though not as much as Tim McCarver), Brett Favre and Donovan McNabb. Now, you might take exception with the Yankees blast. There is a difference between a guy in a booth and a guy writing blogs: You are allowed to be biased. The booth does not when games are nationally televised. Keep it up Tiki.

I agree with everything you said here. Check out my latest post and also go to socalsportsfan.com. Congrats to the Giants. I think they have a good shot at going all the way.

It's funny you should mention that, Tiki. One of my local radio stations always plays a clip of John Madden (one my targets from an earlier blog) saying "He can use his hands and feet at the same time"

it's like your inside my brain lol, you forgot to mention the person who i think is beyond the worst Sean Salisbury, I listen to that #### every week and I sometimes find it hard to fathom how a guy that played in the NFL as long as he did can be so clueless about the game and the league. I'm waiting for the day when John Clayton goes postal on him.

Musberger is the worst, but as commentators go back in the studio, Sean is pretty bad. I do like Steve Young and Jaws.

My biggest problem with Sean Salisbury is he changed his prediction about the NFC East about 8 times throughout the season. If Dallas won a big game, he likes them. The next week, they're a flawed team and the Redskins will win. Then the Redskins drop a few and the Giants are favorites. Then Dallas plays well and they're on top again.

I wish I was a sports analyst where I could make baseless predictions week after week, then say "Whoops, just kidding, did I say that? I meant this team." Before the season, I could make the worst prediction of all time, and then fall back on the "they look good on paper, but they underperformed and their coach didn't help them" excuse.

Tiki - I previewed the Giants game this week.

This is really an excellent piece. Your use of detail by citing specific things that these commentators have said that bother you is what makes it great. Most would just rant "I hate this stupid announcer!" but you back it up.

Personally, my brother and I used to mute Cris Collinsworth during NFL telecasts. There was one season where Bruce Smith was missing from a playoff game between the Steelers and Bills. He mentioned his absence on nearly every Pittsburgh offensive play and completely ruined the game.

The announcers are not designed to cater to the intelligent fan. This might be the problem. If they told us ONCE that a guy was injured, or had a girlfriend related to an opposing player that would be fine. Beating us over the head can destroy the game at hand.

Sometimes they need to realize they are working in TV where the viewer can actually see the action. Anyway, great piece.

I agree with this article, including the part about Mussberger. I know Brady Quinn's sister goes out with Mussberger's favorite player, we also know about Notre Dame S Tom Zbikowski's former boxing career "GOLDEN GLOVES" or how's he never been knocked out. Also, "baby brother". It seemed Musberger's a OSU alumnus and he loves Woody Hayes, the best recruiter ND ever had.

Sean said on Sunday he picked Carolina and the Colts at the beginning of the year and he is sticking with them. Easy pick now, but Carolina isn't getting past anyone.

Tiki, great article. Did you happen to catch the real Tiki on FoxNews this morning. He was actually a host, interviewing guests and covering the news stories. I thought he did a great job. Maybe he'll get in the booth someday and take care of this mess we have to deal with now.

Tiki - After listening to Mike & Kirk broadcast this FSU-PSU game I am starting to get heartburn. They constantly talk over each other and have the inherent inability to just SHUT UP when it is clearly more important for them not to talk. A good example of this was Kirk trying to say that a penalty would be declined during the ref announcing what the penalty is. If I want predictions, I will call a psychic. Let the action unfold first, then give us your inane comments.

How about Keith Jackson during the Rose Bowl? Absolutely horrible. Mangling names and words, missing plays and wrongly interpreting calls. Premier bowl game and this is the best they have??
