Lakers Nuggets: Game, Set, Match?
Apr 28, 2008 | 9:52AM | report this

The Los Angeles Lakers dismantled the Denver Nuggets 102-84 in front of a raucous Pepsi Center crowd Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers methodically picked apart the Nuggets with crisp passes and balanced scoring.

The Lakers shot 46% from the floor and 35% from the 3-point line.

Kobe Bryant scored 22 points on 9-for-19 shooting and four other Lakers scored in double figures.

While Kobe Bryant and company took what the “defense was willing to give up,” Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson repeatedly forced the issue.

Anthony and Iverson, two of the NBA’s top 5 scorers, took turns doing their best rendition of a one man show. [Read]

Thanks. To say it was anything less than a dream come true would be an understatement.

I'm hoping we close it out tonight and the Suns/Spurs go 7 games (unlikely).
A sweep in the first round helps heal the wounds left by the last two playoff 1st round exits...it's just too bad we probably won't get to exact some revenge on the Suns, I was looking foward to paying them back.
This team is looking championship calibur, the Jazz in the second round will pose more of a challenge than the Thuggets have so far...they actually play defense up in Utah.
I'm pretty confident we can beat the Jazz as well. After snapping their 19 game home win streak without Gasol OR Bynum late in the season, I think we matchup pretty well with them.

Time to send the cornrow twins on vacation.
(and get Kobe out of Colorado ASAP, he tends to get distracted there)

LAKERS IN JUNE.

Denver will come out focused tonight. Their effort and intensity will be night and day compared to Saturday's loss.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the series go back to LA.

Utah is going to be very tough. They match well with the the Lakers at every position.

It will all depend upon which Kirilenko shows up. He's the X factor.

Considering that Boston and San Antonio both got beaten big in their attempted sweeps, I wouldn't sleep on Denver. Though with the news that Goerge Karl will return (ending the silly Larry Brown rumors), maybe they won't have as much incentive. As for the press creds, that sounds awesome! I'm studying journalism to do sports broadcasting, and stuff like that sounds up my alley. But the Lakers should win because defense is optional in the thin air, and then fingerpointing (AI vs Melo, AI & Melo vs Karl) will begin.

Sports broadcasting huh?

Good for you Downs. I'm sure you'll do great.

Speaking of finger pointing...I read somewhere that Iverson can opt out after this season but I haven't found any info to substantiate that yet.

Still waiting for that email...

Hopefully we can close it out tonight. The Nuggets will most likely be a bit more focused than they have been. Should be an interesting game though.

Cleveland has stepped it up a notch since the playoffs began. Their defense still isn't what it was last season but Gilbert and DeShawn certainly haven't "walked the walk" since "talking the talk."

Looking forward to their second round matchup with Boston.

Will you be picking against the home team again?

I think it will take a near perfect performance for LA to close Denver out tonight.

The sooner the better because despite evidence to the contrary, I still think Denver is a dangerous basketball team.

Denver has now lost 6 this year to the Lakers. I just don't see the Nugs style allowing them to win tonight, unless they get the big free throw advantage such as they did when the beat the Celtics.

Congrats on your good fortune, give us some more details! Are you going to the Pepsi Ctr tinight, or watching at home?

Damn Hoff, that is really cool. So how did the whole process work? Do you flash them some paper and they let you through? Do you have any access to the players? Where do you get to sit?

You were right. I had nothing to worry about in this series.

Thanks for the congrats.

I'll put something together tomorrow that will detail my Game 3 experience.

I watched tonight's game from home but would have had access to Game 6.

Oh well...

Lakersfan19II - I had access to the players and the press conference before and after the game.

I didn't sit on the floor. Those seats were reserved for the LA Times, USA Today, and ESPN guys. I was just happy to be there and in their company.

It was a great feeling but very humbling at the same time.

I'll post some more on the experience tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by. Lakers are heading to the second round for a matchup with Utah. I'd rather have New Orleans or Dallas but that's how the cookie crumbles.

SoCalF4N - thanks! It's a labor of love.

What's the over/under on how long Karl gets to keep his job?

Rumors are that Karl will be retained.

I'm torn on the subject.

On one hand, I regard Karl as one of the best coaches in the NBA. He's never had a losing season.

On the other, the Nuggets are undisciplined and Karl deserves some of the blame for that.

Still, I don't know if anyone is capable of reining in Melo, Iverson, and J.R. Smith.

Explain this to me if you can what was Karl's motivational process for inspiring his team ? 'cause obviously it didn't seem to work. The pictures of Martha Stewart naked obviously didn't work. And then showing pictures of Rosie O'Donnell seemingly dressed in nothing but a thong had to have been a no - no ! So pray do tell what was it that he did to inspire them to such a lakcluster performance ? 'melo can't and won't play a lick of defense . And K-Mart'll always be the self opinionated as*shole we've always known him to be. That just leaves Ai out there on an island all on his own. He'd have been far better off if he'd had Friday as a teammate to his Robinson Crusoe.

robinson-crusoe

AI interviewing for the position of a teammate in his role as Robinson Crusoe. Karl obviously didn't surround him with the right pieces in the first place.

First of all, press credentials = awesome. Props to you, I'm super-jealous :)

"I read somewhere that Iverson can opt out after this season but I haven't found any info to substantiate that yet."

I'm pretty sure he's locked in through next year. That's what HoopsHype.com says (and they're really reliable with contract stuff). Even if he weren't, there's no way he would opt out. He's owed $20 mil next season, and there's no way he'd get near that much as a free agent.

Thanks!

You'll get there too. If there's anything I can do to help make that happen, let me know.

RealGM reports that AI is guaranteed through next season. Which normally means he has an opt out option after this season.

I agree. He probably won't opt out but he would be smart to give some of that $ back so the Nuggets can improve their roster.

I can't speak to Karl's motivation tactics but I do think he's an excellent coach.

No coach is a miracle worker, they do the best with what they have and he has hard headed roster, that's for sure.
