It's the biggest weekend in motorsports. Racing from the most historic racing venues on earth this holiday weekend. Indianapolis, Charlotte, Monaco, and Mansfield, OH. As always this column is Digger free. Let's drop the rag. Highlights, downlows.

Ongoing scientific studies are showing that race car drivers are probably born, not made. Scientists involved in these studies are saying that racers have a complex combination of intelligence, certain inherited brain chemicals and also can be influenced by their environment. They are saying race champions breed champions. I suppose Kyle Petty is the exception that proves the rule?

                                        The Labontes, championship DNA

H. A. 'Humpy' Wheeler has been forced out at Speedway Motorsports Inc. He announced his departure will be effective after Sunday night's race at LMS. He was the Chief Opperating Officer for SMI, and was also the President there since 1980. Wheeler and SMI Chairman and founder, Bruton Smith, have not gotten along for several years. Bruton is the Jerry Jones of NASCAR, while Wheeler was his Jimmy Johnson---the coach, not driver---. Apparently Smith wants his son, Marcus Smith, to take over for Wheeler. Wheeler did more to keep NASCAR alive and relevant than anyone during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.

NASCAR is saying "that's enough boys." The crab walking down the straightaways is being reeled in a little. Some teams had been offsetting their car's rear ends as much as two degrees. NASCAR is ruling that one degree will be the max. Expect new rules to take effect in 2-3 weeks. Two degrees? It sure looked like a helluva lot more.

AFLAC has signed on with RFR to sponsor Carl Edwards' #99 Ford. The deal is reportedly worth 78 million  over three years. Why does my insurance go up every year, and I've never used it? Which is worse, a talking duck, or some horse-face doing back flips?

All the years of Gymboree paid off

Kyle Busch's souvenir sales are up 40% at trackside vendors from last year. His sales have skyrocketed from 26th place last year to 7th this year. Plenty of room left on the bandwagon. Everybody loves a winner. Kyle is making even more new fans by the way he plays along with the fans as they boo him. The theatrical bows, the cupped ear, the raise the roof gestures. This will work in his favor better than if he tried to ignore the boos. Some related fallout over Kyle being Public Enemy # Won, is that his brother, Kurt Busch is getting no reaction from the crowds now. At the intoductions before the All-Star race Kurt had a bewildered look on his mug, as if he couldn't believe it. No boos, no nothing.

IRL points leader, Helio Castroneves, is fanning some rumors of him going NASCAR racing. He says he's giving it some thought, and would listen to any offers. Sounds as if someone wants their contract renegotiated.

Derrick Cope's twin nieces were to make their CTS debuts at Mansfield this weekend, but Cope has since withdrawn his two entries for that race. Maybe soon.

Finally, with all the racing and other recreational activities that we enjoy it's easy to forget why we have a three day weekend this week. The next time you see a veteran tell him or her thank you. If you're out this weekend and see a member of our armed forces, pick up their dinner check, or buy them a round. Just remember..."This is the Land of the Free, because of The Brave!"

Ya Did Good Hanahan! The gopher patrol's been lurking around here...

Don't you think that just maybe these IRL and FI drivers have figured out the best thing in racing is NASCAR?

Thanks Hanahan!

Finally, Thanks to all the Men and Women who are or have served in our armed forces, We're nothing without you and your sacrifices...

Amen, Hanahan, the men and women of the armed forces make the ultimate sacrefice for our freedom. I don't think Castroneves should come to Nascar, he'll be about as successful as Dario Franchitti, Patrick Carpentier, etc. etc.

Dwindy1- Nascar is the best thing in racing, but they aren't the best thing in Nascar (and I doubt they ever will be).

Major upsets in the corporate office of SMI, drivers loosing and gaining fans, Topless ladies in Monaco, another open wheeler ( not Humpy)testing the thought of driving in NASCAR, talking ducks, and talking Geicos.

Is this fantasy island or what?

Always look forward to your RSO...Humpy is getting a raw deal but will probably go work for NASCAR now and all the tracks will get some new hoopla.

1 degree? Is that 1 degree off the car in the garage next to you? LOL

Thanks to all the armed service men and woman and Happy Memorial Day to all.

Hanahan- At least you could have thrown in a magnifying glass. LOL Anyways with the price of gas. Its gonna be a long weekend at home. Helio needs to stay where he is at. Doesnt he see how bad all of his counterparts are doing over here in the promise land? Speaking of the promise land. A great big thanks to those who have and still fight for our freedom day in and day out.

D-Man....see who's on the pole for the 600? I don't think the F-1 drivers would take the pay cut to go NASCAR. Thanks, D.

Looks like Katie will have to get a new AFLAC duck for next season. She's already "killed" the one she has now (it no longer says AFLAC). It should be thoroughly destroyed by the end of the season (Katie is wanted for stuffycide in several counties).

As for Kyle, as I said in my blog last week, that sound being heard all over Charlotte is the sound of Kyle Busch laughing all the way to the bank. Reminds me of the pro wrestling circuit that used to come through town- there was always one wrestler that the crowd absolutely hated, but after the matches were over, everyone lined up to get his autograph.

pop...do check out Monaco. It's a beautiful place to plop a race course down in the middle of. Humpy is a great guy, and as you say, he truly enjoys meeting the fans. Maybe that's how he knew what would bring them back for over 30 years.

I'll keep saying this til it sticks
It's
Public Enemy #Won

I read somewhere that Humpy wanted to stick around and 'help out' part time but was shown the door?
I'll try to find the article
Next year is the (track's) 50th anniversary," Wheeler said. "I don't want to work full-time until next year, but I could have played some role. But it wasn't to be."

Just as Smith skipped Wheeler's retirement news conference Wednesday, Wheeler was absent from Smith's announcement Thursday that his company had purchased Kentucky Speedway. Smith declined to answer a question about Wheeler's legacy as one of NASCAR's top promoters.

"I might be able to answer that for you later," Smith said. "See, this is all about Kentucky Speedway. That's what I'm here for."

Bruton appears to be a b.uttwhole in this quote

Then there's this from the New York Times

Kentucky Speedway (snip)
Bruton Smith, the chairman and chief executive of S.M.I., promised to acquire a prestigious Cup race date for the track in Sparta, Ky., in time for the 2009 season.

“Yes, next year, yes,” Smith said during a news conference Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway."

YeeMum...thanks for the quotes. I would upgrade Bruton from b hole to a hole. Wonder where he's gonna get that Cup date from. He's also promised a second Cup date to his Vegas track. I clicked on that home page link and it wouldn't go thru, so, no trolls this weekend, I guess.

There is talk of him taking a date from one of his other tracks, or buying another track that has dates.

Another Great One Hanahan! First thanks to all the troops for keeping this the land of the free. Too many forget what the holiday is for other than a 3 day weekend. Hope the bandwagon has some heavy duty springs on it. Kyles souviner sales would be higher but they are having trouble keeping stock. Right on for Kurt, even boos are better than no noise.
Loved the comment on Kyle Petty - remindes me of Bufford T. Justice in Smokey and the Bandit - 'When we get home I'm gonna smack your mama right in the mouth, cause you are not the fruit of my loins!' Too bad he is the spittin image.
Digger will be gone when the broadcasts change networks later this year and I know you are all gonna miss him.
Thanks, I always enjoy reading your informative and entertaining blog. Let's go racin' boys!

I was really shocked to hear that H.A. Humphy Wheeler was leaving the Charlotte Speedway, ("Lowe's"). He will surely be missed at this great old track.

I just hope that Bruton doesn't live to regret this decision to let Humphy go. And we know he will regret letting Humphy go, even if he doesn't let us know.
