Right Sides Only

Welcome to the Richmond edition of Right Sides Only. I grew up and went to school in southeastern Virginia, so RIR is where I fell in love with NASCAR Cup racing. I saw Richard Petty win more times at Richmond than I care to remember. Back in the day the fronstretch was located where pit road is today. You'll be able to see what I mean in the next picture. Highlights and Downlows! Pick it up!

                                           Richmond International Raceway

One sweet deal? The Wrigley Company and Mars merged this week. No word on the affect the merger will have on JGR's M&Ms sponsorship, or the Wrigleys sponsorship with Ganassi. If the caution had not flown during the last lap at Talladega there probably would have been a merger between the winning M&Ms Toyota and the second finishing Juicy Fruit car #42.

Rookie Dario Franchitti fractured his ankle in an accident Saturday at AIS. He should be layed up in bed for a few days. Being married to Ashley Judd should help him follow those doctor's orders. David Streme did a fine job subbing for Dario in the #40 Dodge at AIS. Ken Schrader fills in this week at RIR. Then Sterling Marlin returns to the #40 at Darlington.

Who was driving? Ashley, or Dario?

New for Richmond...Jon Wood will attempt to qualify the #21 Air Force Ford. Regan Smith will have a new sponsor, Steak-Umms-, on the #01 DEI Chevy. Matt Kenseth's #17 Ford will be all black Saturday night.

I'm sure you've heard by now that NFLer, Randy Moss, plans to start up a Truck Series team later this year, then go full time next season. No sponsor, or driver has been named yet. Good luck Rand. I've seen countless NFL stars come to NASCAR, thinking it was cheap and easy. I can't recall any of them winning----Joe Gibbs excepted----or staying for more than a couple of years.  In the last ten or twelve years, stars such as Dan Marino, Brett Favre, Jim Kelly, Joe Washington, Julius Erving, Jerry Glanville, among others, have tried and failed to find success in all three major NASCAR series.

Finally, The Rock is back, baby. Rockingham Speedway is open for business this Sunday featuring the ARCA series. Tune in to SPEED network at noon to catch the action.

Okay... Is it illegal to drive below the yellow line at Richmond? I don't understand why it is illegal on some tracks and not on others... Seems to me that is one rule the should be standardized, either it is or it isn't... Why two different ways?

Thanks Hanahan!

A merger between M&M's and Juicy Fruit? That's obscene!

Isn't Troy Aikman a part owner in one of the Sprint Cup teams? Seems like I remember reading that somewhere, but I could be wrong.

It's only illegal on the superspeedways because they are trying to limit three and four-wide racing with cars on the apron. If a car spins out on the apron it can collect air underneath and go a-tumblin'.

Isn't Troy Aikman a part owner in one of the Sprint Cup teams?

He and Roger Staubach sold most (if not all, but I think most) of their interest in the #96 team to Jeff Moorad, who owns the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Great review Hanahan...you always get the best pictures! I am going to ask my contacts about the anticipated effects of M&Ms and Wrigleys merger and see if I can get some scoop.

D-Man...Looks like you were up early this morning. I wish they did not have the rule at any track. It would be easier if it was everywhere, or nowhere. Thanks, D-1.

bc...nice to see you again, bro. Yeah, that merger would never work.It would be too difficult to keep them separate, and if they mixed that would be obscene. Aikman and Staubach found that it was harder than it looked. Once you run out of OPM, and you have to start spending your own it's time to get out.

JJ...Is the yellow line rule at all superspeedways? I thought it was only at the restrictor plate tracks. I know they go just as, or almost, as fast at Texas and Atlanta as the two restricted tracks. Thanks.

Yep, ownership didn't work out too well for Terry Bradshaw, either.

Aaaah...Richmond. Now, this is RACING! Going out on a limb here, Hanahan - Labonte gets a Top-ten and Petty knocks down the Turn 2 wall.

kristen...thank you. The picture looks like Letterman, but I don't remember when she broke(?) her ankle. Maybe she was on Dario's Vespa? That sounds dirty.X^)

moseby....Darn, I forgot about the Bald Bomber. Man, that was a screwed up organization that he and Armando were running (into the ground). I used to watch that TV show and wonder how come I don't own a NASCAR team. Oh yeah, I didn't marry billionaire, Felix Sabates' daughter!

Don't think KP will have the speed required to knock down a wall.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Good catch.

H ~ it's called Pancho's, it is a mexican place. The one we go to is off Whites Station & Summer Ave, I believe there is a GoodYear store there. They have closed all of them except one more over in West Memphis I believe. They serve the cheese dip ice cold and I always have to ask them to warm mine up :) good stuff otherwise.

Lori...thanks. I just talked with someone at work about Pancho's. He said when he was a kid in Memphis, the original one in W. Memphis was the only Mexican joint in town. The big Beale St. music fest is this weekend, so I doubt I'll make it to Pancho's until next week.

Hey, I saw where you left a comment on my post at that other site. Thanks.

Richmond looks like a fun track to attend a NASCAR race at. The NWS race was fun to watch. Although I did see Dario at the track, guess he wasnt at home resting that ankle though.

I love reading your blogs, but I do have one concern and I am only thinking of you and your safty. Your left side tires have to be blistered by now with only changing right sides only. I think its time someone takes a look on how you can get away with changing rights only.

You must be socking those left tires in Gor ll ia Glue. IMO. Cheerssss

Forensic...Haha. Maybe that's why my laps are getting slower and slower. My owner is too cheap to buy me any left side tires.

dav...I don't think so. I remember going to the M&Ms store/museum 8 years ago in Vegas. Ken Schrader was driving the M&Ms car then. Thanks for reading.
