The Giants have finally dealt away TE Jeremy Shockey. In what seemed to me an unexpected move, New York traded him to the New Orleans Saints today for 2 draft picks.
This is insane! What a dumb trade by the Giants! Shockey is worth a 1st round pick, and they settled for less because they were in a hurry. HA! That’s whatcha get I guess for being an ####.
The Saints have just pulled off the steal of the century by landing Shockey. The offense in Nawlins is absolutely frickin’ loaded! The Saints are undoubtedly, undeniably the favorite in the NFC South this season.
Here is their schedule:
1. TB 2. @ WSH 3. @ DEN 4. SF 5. MIN 6. OAK 7. @ CAR 8. SD (London) 9. BYE 10. @ ATL 11. @ KC 12. GB 13. @ TB 14. ATL 15. @ CHI 16. @ DET 17. CAR
If you ask me, that looks like an 11-5 or 12-4 record. You don’t have to ask me though, because that’s why I’m here, to tell you. The Saints are making the playoffs guaranteed. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Saints are gonna be one of the Vegas favorites come September.
At the same time as this helps the Saints, we need to look at the Giants and see if this really does hurt them.
Here is their schedule for 2008:
1. WSH 2. @ STL 3. CIN 4. BYE 5. SEA 6. @ CLE 7. SF 8. @ PIT 9. DAL 10. @ PHI 11. BAL 12. @ ARZ 13. @ WSH 14. PHI 15. @ DAL 16. CAR 17. @ MIN
That looks like about a 9-7 season without a playoff berth. there is too much competition in the NFC Wild Card for them to make it, and I’m pretty sure that it’s common sense the Cowboys are gonna win the division. Minnesota, Green Bay, Arizona, Philly, and Tampa Bay all have better shots at the playoffs that the Giants do without Shockey.
They have pretty much based this trade on a foolish decision to go with the Tight End who made one big catch. Kevin Boss (I think it’s Kevin, right?) made a good play in the Super Bowl that got the Giants way downfield in order to win the game.
Okay, to give credit where credit is due, he was wide open, and the defender pretty much fell on his face like an ostrich, so it was less impressive than some people seem to think.
Giants fans, beware, I’m not saying Boss is a bad tight end, in fact I do think he’s pretty good, but don’t get your hopes up for him being a Player of the Year candidate like Jeremy Shockey would be.
That’s all I got for this topic, let me hear your thoughts.

For the Giants this is a great move and everyone it'd appear has profitted from this. Shockey gets his wish to play for a contender. However that's predicated on the Saints stepping up to the plate. And the Giants get rid of their sole malcontent on the team.
And now with Jason 'DWTS' Taylor going to the Redskins. I don't know that'll definitely make the 'skins any better right off the bat. That's a team that can't seem to find an identity. They're inept on both sides of the ball. And in quarterback Jason Campbell is still in a learning mode when it comes to the NFL.
Do you think that they'll enter into the Favre sweepstakes ? Though it must be said that if Favre has his way. He'll want to go to somewhere he believes that not only will get the chance to play but also win. As that's what he's now about and not much else.
Mike; This is a win-win for everyone involved! He (Shockey) "as we found out in the playoffs", was the only thing holding up the progress of Eli Manning. The Giants are MUCH better off without him and i dont think for a second that he can upset Drew Breeses game as he did Mannings. Drew wont take his ####. And maybe, just maybe, this move, or force out by the Giants will help Jeremy Shockey GET OVER HIMSELF and just do his job.
Lets see what that loser, OOPS, i mean my good buddy Gambitxx thinks of this move, bet he loves it.....
Good move by the Saints. If Peyton can keep this guy in check off the field he would be a nice upgrade on it. Tigh End was average at best going into camp. I used to think negative of this move when they spoke of it back during the draft. He's got some issues but football isn't one of them.
I think Jeremy was cancer and cancer spreads. Never mind about his ability(although he has been injured a lot the last couple of years)
I honestly think Shockey has a problem that hasn't surfaced yet. Actually it has a little however, nobody seems to have noticed.
To me it's one thing to be excitable and emotional while still supporting your team. It's quite another to be throwing tantrums on the sidelines when you feel you aren't getting the ball enough and getting into fist fights with team members when everyone is sitting down eating dinner.
I don't like the guy and I have stated my reasons why. If he changes his ways over in New Orleans, so be it. I just think one glass of Shockey with a shot of Plexico is going to disrupt a team. Good move Giants.
"Unexpected move?" Where ya been, Mike? The Saints offered this very same trade to the Giants on draft day. It didn't get done then because the Giants asked for a 2nd rounder plus Roman Harper. The offer of a 2nd and a 5th has been on the table ever since. Did they get enough for him? Who knows, but they certainly got as much as they could for a Pro Bowl talent that had become a whiner and a locker room cancer.
agreed...everyone wins this one, though I do think that the Giants could possibly have gotten a little more. Glad they didn't though, as I don't think Drew/Payton will put up with too much #### from anyone. And he'll be in a new town with new faces. Drew is an excellent leader...Manning is a good qb.
I don't think so Greenspire. I have always felt Shockey is one of the most overrated players in the league. He was going to cause drama in training camp, and he simply isn't worth it. Kevin Boss did a serviceable job for the team, and let's remember, they made their entire Super Bowl run without him. It's kind of like Plex with the Steelers. Sure, he is a fine player, but I don't think the Steelers have suffered one bit since losing him.
shockey will make the saints offense very scary now because teams can no longer just focus on shutting down marques colston they now have to account for shockey who is to fast for linebackers and to big for a cornerback to cover alone...hahaha i feel sorry for any team that has to play us.
well i' in awh awh who is brees going to throw too reggie calston or shockey even davery come on payton now that you are loaded lets see how good of an offensive coach you really are. thanks tight #### tom benson if your let your daughter run the funds of the team you would be better off you just old retire.
Mike, the decision to trade Shockey was not based on a "foolish decision" to go with Boss and others at the position. The decision was based on the fact that the Giants' offense was better without him. Here's how the Giants did last season both with and without Shockey in the line-up (stats pinched from nfl.com):
With Without
Games 14 6
PPG 21.4 26.4
Rush YPG 127.1 130.5
Pass TD-INT 19-17 10-4
Passer rating 71.6 93.3
Still think the Giants offense will suffer without Shockey?
The Giants offense will not do good in the NFC East this year. Jason Taylor wil be in Eli's face on the Redskins, that vicious Cowboys D-Line will be relentless, and the Eagles have a solid defensive back game, which will alos hurt the Giants offense, so yeah, I do still think the Giants will not be as good without Shockey.
You can't base what they did with and without a player on a run in which they went 5-1. Besides, Manning passed the ball more in those games, so he's bound to complete more.
Mike, those stats show nothing about completing more passes during those 6 games, but they do show that the Giants passing offense was certainly more productive and more efficient. One could easily argue that the 5-1 run was due to Shockey's being out of the line-up. The Giants also certainly played better as a team during that time and have the trophy to prove it.
The fact remains that Shockey (a Drew Rosenhaus client) is a talented TE that had become a whiney pain in the ####. Is the offense as good or better without him? They were at the end of last season and we'll see what happens this season. Are the Giants better off as a team without the distraction of his antics? Yeah, I think so.
Hmmm...Been out allday with a female friend and just returned home and found out about this. It's a good trade on both ends no doubt. I'll be posting what I think soon.
Bear in mind that the G-men fired up the afterburners w/o Shock when he went down. They played with a sense of purpose those last six games. Did ANYONE actually expect the G-G-G-G-men to win the SB XLII? Eli seemed more at ease w/o a talened, but disgruntled TE in his ear. Did the team chemistry change? We'll find out on Sept. 4th. if it lasts.
So, the burning question...Will he provide the same distraction to Brees as he did to Eli? We all know he wants to showcase his immense talent, but Shock needs to remember that football is a team sport. Just ask T.O. His 'all about me n' my skills' mantra has not generated a ring for him, either. (I say this as Shock did not play in the SB)
Mike G, I too am in the camp that thinks this is a win-win situation. To keep Shock-a-lock in NY would merely provide another year of discontent with a malcontent. Yet, i was intrigued of the notion of O.C. Kevin gilbride devising a 2-TE set with Boss and Shock
Speaking of Kevin Boss, none of us expect him to be a 'new' Shockey right now. He is only a 2nd yr. player. But know this. He will be learning a lot this season as the starting TE, and by season 3, he will be a force to be reckoned with. This guy is a tree, at 6'7"
For the record, I'll miss the big lug.

Greenspire, I think you missed the point on this one. It isn't about Shockey vs. Boss, it's about Shockey vs. Team Chemistry. The Giants offense showed last year that they don't miss him. They also won't miss his hissy fits on the sidelines, all the yapping in the huddle to get him the ball, and showing up Manning by throwing up his hands every time he's open and wasn't thrown the ball. The truth is he constantly free-lances his routes and most times was open but just not where his QB expected him to be. Maybe the Saints will make better use of him, but the Giants are better off without him.
Good move by the Saints. Their offense is improved, but Shockey tends to get nicked up. And he's allergic to blocking. The Giants got rid of their malcontent, and they got better by subtraction.
Good post Mike, The move is good for the Giants, they rid themselves of the distraction. Good for the Saints if Shockey settles down and plays to his potential. Not good for my Bucs if he does.
