Hello, FOX Bloggers and FOXY Bloggers alike, this is Mike Greenspire, and I am here to award the first annual Pittsburgh Sportsman of the Year Award!
The award goes to the best player or coach in Pittsburgh Pro sports of the past year, starting in August 2007, and going to July 2008. Any Pittsburgh sportsman in that time period is eligible for votes!
Nate McLouth. I like to see fantasy league gold like this guy, because he comes out of nowhere and surprises us all. I wish I had him on my team. The Pirates should hang on to that guy.
I don't watch hockey, so I barely know who Sidney Crosby is and as you know I hate the Steelers very much. McLouth is the winner.
I'm going with Tomlin. Since he stepped in on Day 1 he's showed that he's got what it takes to succeed in Steeltown. An AFC North title in his first year as a head coach anywhere is nothing to cough at. Beyond that, he showed that he's got that hard-nosed Steeler attitude that's had so much success over the years. He's the real deal.
It's a close call to me however, I have to go with Ben. He showed me a lot last year. He showed me he has the physical amd mental toughness to come back from a life threatening(although self inflicted)injury.
He showed me that despite a new coach and a new style offense, he's willing to put in the time and play well.
He showed me despite being sacked the second most times in the NFL, he can still pass for 32 TD's versus only 11 int's.
He showed me that when he does make multiple mistakes in a game(Jacksonville)he can shake it off and keep his team competitive until the end.
Ben actually showed me more last year than any year previously as far as the type of professional that he is........thus he gets my nomination.

A vote for Fleury. His emergence put the Penguins in position for a shot at the title. If he had not stepped forward it is unlikely they would have been in the finals, even with all the other talent.
sorry guy's but malkins the biggest reason, the pens went that far....if he did not go on a tear after sid went down..we would not have gotten the privlage to even make the playoffs!!!!!
jhancherick- When did Tomlin show you that he is hard-nosed like the men of the Steel City? I certainly didn't see it. He doesn't seem very enthusiastic in the press conferences, and when he's down on the field, he makes key mistakes.
If we still had Cowher, there's NO WAY we lose to Jacksonville even ONCE! If we still had Cowher, there's NO WAY Cleveland comes within 4 points of beating us! Tomlin hasn't proved anything to me. Win a playoff game, and then we'll talk.
Greenspire, how can you say we wouldn't lose to the Jags if Cowher was still coach? they've owned us lately. you have to go back to 2004 to see a victory over Jacksonville, and that took a last-second jeff reed field goal for us to win by ONE. i was at the Week 14 game, and they beat the #### out of us - but I don't think Cowher would've done any better. Remember, Tomlin went 10-6 and won a division title with pretty much the same team that Cowher took to 8-8 the year before.
yeah, Tomlin messed up against the Jags in the playoffs - going for 2 was not the right move, but it was rookie mistake. you'll have those. he gets my vote because he's gotten Ben to buy into his system while still playing physical Steeler football - before fast Willie went down in week 15 against the Rams, he was on his way to the rushing title and our defense was top 5 again. playoff wins aren't far away.
For me, its a two-horse race between Geno and Big Ben, but I will give the edge to Geno. No rag on Ben, he had a great season, but he didn't raise his team's level of play as much as Malkin did. Nobody really saw Malkin picking up the Pens on his back and carrying them the way he did. Through his determined performance, he not only brought up his play, but the team around him. That is why I cast for Geno. But all deserving candidates though.
Hey Mike, you make a great point bout Tomlin, but he still gets my vote over the rest. Ben was my close second, sorry I don't much watch hockey, so I wouldn't know who there was worthy.
as for cowher beating Jacksonville, It this the same coach that went 1-4 in home afc championship games? got blown out by the jags in their second year? let kneeel odonntthrowitthere lose the game when he was famous for gadget plays in those situations? I think you will see tha same Tomlin this year, but teh players will respond with their tough schedule, and prove him worthy!
