The Chicago Bears signed former Detroit Lions RB, Kevin Jones to a 1-year deal yesterday, trying obviously to fix their running back problem.
This is a good move by the Bears; this kid was absolutely electric in his first two seasons. Since then, he has been plagued by injuries. Yet, his production is still relatively average to above average.
A few weeks ago, he did a workout for several teams. Detroit was on the list for some reason. I don’t know why they would cut him and then think about resigning him. Whatever. Chicago’s and Pittsburgh’s scouts were also there.
Pittsburgh has a one-two running back punch in the works with Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall. Fullback Dan Kreider has blocked for a 1,000 yard rusher almost every NFL season he has played in his career.
The Steelers just released RB Davenport after they could find no takers on trade offers, so Kevin Jones might have been a possibility as a 3rd down back. Maybe, but that’s a stretch. It would be nice to have double the insurance, however, if Parker goes down like he did last year in St. Louis in Week 16.
The Bears have had major trouble with their RBs. Not many people can draft a top RB coming out of college and turn him into a complete bust. Maybe the OL and RB coaches need to be fired?
The Bears aren’t exactly playing in a very competitive division. With Brett Favre gone, (and hopefully it stays that way) the Packers are severely weakened when it comes to the passing game. Chicago’s defense is really high-caliber, and shouldn’t have a problem intercepting Aaron Rodgers. If you can pick off Favre, you can pick off anyone.
The Lions are always gonna be a laughing stock until they get rid of Matt Millen. He is the mastermind behind the Lions epic failures of the past 5 years.
The Vikings are a work in progress. All they need is for either Tarvaris Jackson or John David Booty to step up and be the passing QB that they are looking for. If the Vikes can get one of them to play at full potential, then I see them being the team to beat in the NFC North with Adrian Peterson.
Well, one thing’s for sure, if the Bears can’t return to the playoffs, or at least contend for a Wild Card berth, something needs to change on the coaching staff.
Let me hear your guys’ and gals’ thoughts on the topic of the NFC North.

Less we've all forgotten they've still got a problem with the quarterback position ? It's the lesser of two evils Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton ?
Lovie Smith'll have to pick his poison and run the hell with it.
Oops I did it again !
What day is it ? Am I playing today ? Kyle Orton. NFL ready quarterback maybe if the team was The Little Sisters of The Poor.

This really is a duel of unproven QBs up in the NFC North. While I think signing KJ was a great move by the Bears, the issue is the passing game for their offense. As Tophat pointed out, Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton are not the answer to any question, save "Name two guys you wouldn't want as a backup QB"... but then there is the added complexity of having no real proven WRs.
Detroit just needs to fire anyone who's ever been associated with the team.
Green Bay and Minnesota both feature strong offenses, fearsome defenses, and two QBs no one is sure they want to trust. My predicition is that whichever of the QBs plays stronger in the season (or whichever team is led by Favre), they're the one to take the division.
Fair enough on Marty, but I wouldn't peg him as a game breaker... or attribute the level of consistency you'd want in a top guy. He's OK... but in this league, that's simply not enough... especially with the guys throwing the ball in mind.
Good stuff though, as always!

As in the Richard Pryor inspired movie Brewster's Millions. I'd vote for none of the above. The Bears really need to go out and get themselves a free agent signee quarterback. Rather than relying on two underperforming talent who'll never reach their alleged true potential.
I hear that if the price is right Favre may well be willing to join 'em ?
