During last night’s 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants, the Detroit Tigers showed again that they are ready to make a run at the AL Central. This time, one individual impressed me more than the rest of the team.
Tigers SS, Edgar Renteria, recorded his 2000th career hit last night at A####mp;T Park in San Fran. This is quite impressive in my eyes, as I’m sure it is to every other sports fan out there. But, the FSN commentators during the game said something I didn’t expect. If I or them am not mistaken, then Renteria is the first Columbian-born player to achieve that milestone in major league history.
What do you guys think about this? Is this groundbreaking for Columbian players and major league hopefuls? Or is it just another hit? Let me know.
Renteria is not unsung in my hometown of Miami--he had the single biggest hit in Marlins history. This is a great accomplishment, anytime you are the first to represent your country at something it is an achievement worthy of note. That means you are paving the way for future athletes to come and do better than you in the future because you set the example. Renteria deserves his props.
I don't know about celebrating milestones for every difference race (we will never get past race issues if we do), but Renteria is a fine ballplayer. A team first guy and I really enjoyed watching him while he was with the Braves. You can put him in the 1 or 2 spot and fell comfortable.
Thanks for commenting, guys. You all have good points. The race issue will always be brought up reharding baseball. Without it, Jackie Robinson is just another good player. In some ways, it helps baseball.
Anyone who hangs around long enough can reach 2000 hits. The milestone is in reaching 3,000 and beyond. We cant keep separate records for every player from every place. Next people are going to expect a wing in the HOF for players who hit more than their weight while coming from a small island in some remote ocean space outside the US. Cmon.
Congrats to Edgar! Stand up guy who deserves to be recognized for this. He won the 97 series for the Marlins with a single RBI with two outs. 5 all-star appearances. 2 GG's. 3 Silver Sluggers. It's not an elite list like 600 HR, but it is worth noticing!

I think that it's a feat that ought to be appreciated and coveted. Renteria hasn't always been seen as a great player. But on his day he's still capable of pulling off something special when his game is really on.
I see that the Rays have put the Cubbies in their place at the Trop ? A win tonight and they'll have swept the series.
Even though this is a great moment for Renteria, it is not a "milestone in major league history." Regardless of him being the first Columbian to hit 2000, that is in no way a milestone. Just as 300 wins, 500 homeruns, and 600 homeruns are milestones that have been constant for several decades, the milestone for career hits is 3000, not 2000. 3000, 4000, 4256, and 4257 are the milestones. As others have said, anyone who plays long enough can get 2000 hits, every few are good enough to hit consistently enough to get 3000, only two have hit consistently enough to get 4000, and one has got 4256.
Recently, quite a few celebrities and pro athletes were said to appear on the millionaire luxury club ////####////OMG!!! Are these famous guys fond of internet dating for now?? Maybe they are indeed so rich that they feel boring sometimes to need new things?
tophat- I was surprised that the Rays took it to the Cubs like they did. It wasn't by much, but it is indeed a surprise. Pittsburghers don't seem to mind it that much, I'm sure.
sull0711- You can have your own opinion of course, but this is major and monumental for COLOMBIAN born players in the big leagues. They have to feel just as good as Renteria does.
vinny- Sorry, I'll fix that as soon as I can.
BoSox21- Maybe because he sucked for the Red Sox, but did good elsewhere? Yep, that's probably it. And if 2,000 hits doesn't change the fact that a player sucks in your eyes, than we should see how many Red Sox have 2,000 hits that started badly in their careers.

Nothing the Rays are doing at the moment tends to surprise. They're playing with a heightened sense of urgency and confidence. They're going to smack the snot out of the Astros before their upcoming series with the Red Sox.
And that's the one that everyone'll be looking forward to seeing. Let's see also if Papelbon'll be able to back up all of that smack talk about the Rays ?
