Breaking news right now! Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals hockey star will be named Most Valuable Player next week.
This comes after an NHL.com T-shirt was released for sale with “Ovechkin MVP” or something along those lines on it a tad bit earlier than scheduled.
The award ceremonies are not for another week, but who cares!? We now know who the NHL thinks their best player is, so let’s get debate going , only on MGKB Sports!
So, I want you to tell me who the best player in the NHL is and why.
In my opinion, it is Evgeni Malkin. When Crosby was out with an injury earlier this year, he stepped up incredibly, and he is most likely the best player in the entire world. Although his Stanley Cup Finals play was lack-luster, he is still the best player, and for the NHL to give this award to someone who hasn’t even won a playoff series yet when there are better players that were competing in the Stanley Cup Finals is not the right move.
All I’ve heard all year long from Caps fans is “Well, he scores more than Malkin or Crosby do”. Well, yeah, if you are such a one-man-team, which the Capitals are, then he is more likely to take more shots. When you have better players surrounding you, like in Pittsburgh, you can pass the puck and still get a goal. Ovechkin is a one-man-team, and does not deserve this award.
Alex Ovechkin is a “puck hawk” and Malkin is not. The Russian Defector should be getting this honor this year, not a guy who was eliminated by a team 3 spots down in the standings.
Malkin who? Wasn't there suppose to be a showing in the Finals? He disappeared as quick as Crosby after Stuart checked Sid the kid. Best player in the world? Someone is spiking your kool-aid. As for being eliminated by a team three spots down in the standings, does it matter? After all, there was only one champ - The Detroit Red Wings!!!! The best from start to finish. Your opinion said he might be the best player in the world. That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. However, the best defenseman - Lidstrom; the best two way player - Zetterberg and thats just my opinion. Of course, we can ask Schneider and Bertuzzi that opted out for some warmer climate in California. Wonder how that career move worked out for them this year.
I won't say Malkin is the best player in the world. I admit, as a Pens fan, they didn't do well in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Ovechkin is overrated. Heck, even if you just have the regular season, he wasn't the MVP. It should have been Malkin or that guy from the Calgary Flames. Like you said he is a puck hog. Sure he lead in goals scored but he also led in shots attempted. The other 2 had higher percentages of shots going into the goal.
First off, it's an award for the Most Valuable Player, not necessarily the best player. Kind of silly award for Hockey, being even more team oriented than most team sports. It is also an award for the regular season only, playoffs not considered. Furthermore, Philly had a better record than Washington; Caps only got the 3rd seed because they won their division.
That said, replace Malkin with an average player, and the Pens would have struggled when Crosby was hurt, but most likely they still make the playoffs, and maybe even the finals. Replace Iginla and maybe the Flames miss the playoffs, but they still have Kipper and some big hitters, and a tough grinding style. Replace Ovechkin? Washington probably becomes the worst team in the league. AO is clearly the MVP. He also plays defense, so give him the Pearson too. (Most Outstanding player, selected by the players association.)
And Malkin the 'best player in the entire world'? You can't be serious. He's not even the best offense-only player in the world, or his own team even.
Maybe in a few years, when he has a complete game; and is no longer a defensive liability, and can kill penalties, and can win faceoffs, and win battles in the corners; maybe then we can talk about it.
Of course, Ovechkin, Crosby, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Nash, and I'm sure others will also improve/emerge by then too.
