Yesterday, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the Pens lost to the Red Wings 4-0.
Well, I thought we would lose one in Detroit. Now, we must rebound and win Game 2 on Memorial Day.
The Penguins through the first two periods looked about how I figured they would look, except that I thought there would be more than 0 goals in our favor.
Well, I have loads of confidence entering the 3rd, but what I was hoping for never happened.
I’ll tell you why. The Penguins looked like they did against Philly, only without the goals, and it’s as simple as that. If Biron, Lundqvist, Nabakov, or even Turco was the goalie in red, we would have won the game 4-1 or 4-2. But, the fact of the matter is that it was Chris Osgood in the nets for Detroit. He never let anything by him, nothing even got close.
The Pens offense looked great up until the start of the third. I’m guessing that we dropped off a bit because this entire post-season, we’ve never had a situation where we haven’t been able to score at will. Now we do, and we need to somehow exploit Osgood. We had too many costly turnovers and oddman rushes against us. We need to mainly take care of the puck better, and not let Detroit stay in the game.
Marc-Andre Fleury didn’t look himself, right from the entrance onto the ice, because upon touching the frozen water, he slipped and fell, and looked as though he may have hurt his leg. Maybe, maybe not, I’m not trying to make excuses, but he just didn’t look well during the final 30 minutes of the game.
For us to pull off a win in MoTown, we need to have more pop in the offense, and score early, rather than late, because perhaps our loss of momentum was caused by our guys not getting a goal in the first 2 periods.
Crosby and Malkin will get better, and will be better in Monday’s game, I guarantee it. But, there’s no way the Wings are gonna shut us out again.
My prediction for Monday’s game: Penguins-3, Red Wings-2
Mike! From what I read....Pens looked sluggish and the Wings played a Pens game...I hope they take the Stanley and bring it back to the 'Burg, but wishing and hoping won't make it so.....Wonder if they were overawed by the experience of the Wings and the fact that it is mostly firsts for the team as a whole....
fuzz- I think we looked alright. We needed an offense that would move the puck around better. We had way to many turnovers. That's the biggest problem we have going into Game 2. Take care!
Trey- I doubt it. This is the kind of confidence that makes me sick of Detroit fans. Take care!
kelly- Salt in the wound, huh? Well, we will bounce back. Take care!
Mike, I'm worried about the youth of the Penguins. A blowout game can really effect the confidence of a young squad. The veterans need to calm the young guys down if there is going to be any chance o####ame 2 win. My original prediction was Wings in 7, hopefully the Pens can come back. It's going to be a tough series....
Good job on 'showing as little bias' as possible in your blog.
Honestly, this blog is about as insightful as Lupus G's nonsense.
Osgood was the difference? He made what? 3 or 4 decent saves. It was the Wings defense that shut the Pens down, much more than Ozzie. Yeah, the 'old' Wings defense that the young Pens were supposed to wear out by the end of the second.
The Pens offense looked ok on the three power-plays in the first. Pretty much nothing after that. Hardly as good as some pressure the Wings have faced in earlier rounds. I (and pretty much all but a handful of the sillier Wings fans) realize that Pittsburgh can be much better. The bad news is, so can the Wings. And you can be sure their looking at how to get better, and how to make Pittsburgh worse.
But I love how all of Pittsburgh seems to be calling the Wings fans over-confident, when it's you all who seem to think the Pens are some unstoppable offensive juggernaut, are incapable of losing at home, and are guaranteed to wear down the old Wings.
And Fluery was the only thing keeping the Pens in the game. Maybe he should have stopped the meaningless Zetterburg goal at the end, or the Cleary goal, maybe. But he made many more quality stops than Osgood.
You'd better hope the Pens are taking a hard look, not only at what they did wrong, but at what the Wings did right. It's not necessarily a given that the Pens can beat the Wings, even with the best of game plans. Without one, they have no chance.
Fluery didn't do much to keep us in the game. 4 goals isn't exactly doing your part.
Osgood let nothing by, and you're right, the defense was terrific, but when we got open looks, we missed completely, due to Osgood moving around in there.
